ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
the Most Merciful
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
٤٠:١
حمٓ Ha Meem hha-meem
Ha Meem
١ (1)

Ḥā, Meem.
٤٠:٢
تَنزِيلُ (The) revelation tanzīlu
(The) revelation
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book l-kitābi
(of) the Book
مِنَ (is) from mina
(is) from
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
ٱلْعَزِيزِ the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi
the All-Mighty
ٱلْعَلِيمِ the All-Knower l-ʿalīmi
the All-Knower
٢ (2)
(2)
The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,
٤٠:٣
غَافِرِ (The) Forgiver ghāfiri
(The) Forgiver
ٱلذَّنۢبِ (of) the sin l-dhanbi
(of) the sin
وَقَابِلِ and (the) Acceptor waqābili
and (the) Acceptor
ٱلتَّوْبِ (of) [the] repentance l-tawbi
(of) [the] repentance
شَدِيدِ severe shadīdi
severe
ٱلْعِقَابِ (in) the punishment l-ʿiqābi
(in) the punishment
ذِى Owner (of) the abundance dhī
Owner (of) the abundance
ٱلطَّوْلِ ۖ Owner (of) the abundance l-ṭawli
Owner (of) the abundance
لَآ (There is) no
(There is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّا except illā
except
هُوَ ۖ Him huwa
Him
إِلَيْهِ to Him ilayhi
to Him
ٱلْمَصِيرُ (is) the final return l-maṣīru
(is) the final return
٣ (3)
(3)
The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.
٤٠:٤
مَا Not
Not
يُجَـٰدِلُ dispute yujādilu
dispute
فِىٓ concerning
concerning
ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Verses āyāti
(the) Verses
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
إِلَّا except illā
except
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve kafarū
disbelieve
فَلَا so (let) not falā
so (let) not
يَغْرُرْكَ deceive you yaghrur'ka
deceive you
تَقَلُّبُهُمْ their movement taqallubuhum
their movement
فِى in
in
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ the cities l-bilādi
the cities
٤ (4)
(4)
No one disputes concerning the signs of Allāh except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land.
٤٠:٥
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat
Denied
قَبْلَهُمْ before them qablahum
before them
قَوْمُ (the) people qawmu
(the) people
نُوحٍۢ (of) Nuh nūḥin
(of) Nuh
وَٱلْأَحْزَابُ and the factions wal-aḥzābu
and the factions
مِنۢ after them min
after them
بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ after them baʿdihim
after them
وَهَمَّتْ and plotted wahammat
and plotted
كُلُّ every kullu
every
أُمَّةٍۭ nation ummatin
nation
بِرَسُولِهِمْ against their Messenger birasūlihim
against their Messenger
لِيَأْخُذُوهُ ۖ to seize him liyakhudhūhu
to seize him
وَجَـٰدَلُوا۟ and they disputed wajādalū
and they disputed
بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ by falsehood bil-bāṭili
by falsehood
لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ to refute liyud'ḥiḍū
to refute
بِهِ thereby bihi
thereby
ٱلْحَقَّ the truth l-ḥaqa
the truth
فَأَخَذْتُهُمْ ۖ So I seized them fa-akhadhtuhum
So I seized them
فَكَيْفَ Then how fakayfa
Then how
كَانَ was kāna
was
عِقَابِ My penalty ʿiqābi
My penalty
٥ (5)
(5)
The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
٤٠:٦
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika
And thus
حَقَّتْ has been justified ḥaqqat
has been justified
كَلِمَتُ (the) Word kalimatu
(the) Word
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
عَلَى against ʿalā
against
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
كَفَرُوٓا۟ disbelieved kafarū
disbelieved
أَنَّهُمْ that they annahum
that they
أَصْحَـٰبُ (are) companions aṣḥābu
(are) companions
ٱلنَّارِ (of) the Fire l-nāri
(of) the Fire
٦ (6)
(6)
And thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.
٤٠:٧
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna
Those who
يَحْمِلُونَ bear yaḥmilūna
bear
ٱلْعَرْشَ the Throne l-ʿarsha
the Throne
وَمَنْ and who waman
and who
حَوْلَهُۥ (are) around it ḥawlahu
(are) around it
يُسَبِّحُونَ glorify yusabbiḥūna
glorify
بِحَمْدِ (the) praises biḥamdi
(the) praises
رَبِّهِمْ (of) their Lord rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَيُؤْمِنُونَ and believe wayu'minūna
and believe
بِهِۦ in Him bihi
in Him
وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَ and ask forgiveness wayastaghfirūna
and ask forgiveness
لِلَّذِينَ for those who lilladhīna
for those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe āmanū
believe
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā
Our Lord
وَسِعْتَ You encompass wasiʿ'ta
You encompass
كُلَّ all kulla
all
شَىْءٍۢ things shayin
things
رَّحْمَةًۭ (by Your) Mercy raḥmatan
(by Your) Mercy
وَعِلْمًۭا and knowledge waʿil'man
and knowledge
فَٱغْفِرْ so forgive fa-igh'fir
so forgive
لِلَّذِينَ those who lilladhīna
those who
تَابُوا۟ repent tābū
repent
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ and follow wa-ittabaʿū
and follow
سَبِيلَكَ Your Way sabīlaka
Your Way
وَقِهِمْ and save them (from) waqihim
and save them (from)
عَذَابَ (the) punishment ʿadhāba
(the) punishment
ٱلْجَحِيمِ (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
(of) the Hellfire
٧ (7)
(7)
Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.
٤٠:٨
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā
Our Lord
وَأَدْخِلْهُمْ And admit them wa-adkhil'hum
And admit them
جَنَّـٰتِ (to) Gardens jannāti
(to) Gardens
عَدْنٍ (of) Eden ʿadnin
(of) Eden
ٱلَّتِى which allatī
which
وَعَدتَّهُمْ You have promised them waʿadttahum
You have promised them
وَمَن and whoever waman
and whoever
صَلَحَ (was) righteous ṣalaḥa
(was) righteous
مِنْ among min
among
ءَابَآئِهِمْ their fathers ābāihim
their fathers
وَأَزْوَٰجِهِمْ and their spouses wa-azwājihim
and their spouses
وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِهِمْ ۚ and their offspring wadhurriyyātihim
and their offspring
إِنَّكَ Indeed You innaka
Indeed You
أَنتَ You anta
You
ٱلْعَزِيزُ (are) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu
(are) the All-Mighty
ٱلْحَكِيمُ the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
the All-Wise
٨ (8)
(8)
Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
٤٠:٩
وَقِهِمُ And protect them waqihimu
And protect them
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ (from) the evils l-sayiāti
(from) the evils
وَمَن And whoever waman
And whoever
تَقِ you protect taqi
you protect
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ (from) the evils l-sayiāti
(from) the evils
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ that Day yawma-idhin
that Day
فَقَدْ then verily faqad
then verily
رَحِمْتَهُۥ ۚ You have bestowed mercy on him raḥim'tahu
You have bestowed mercy on him
وَذَٰلِكَ And that wadhālika
And that
هُوَ [it] huwa
[it]
ٱلْفَوْزُ (is) the success l-fawzu
(is) the success
ٱلْعَظِيمُ the great l-ʿaẓīmu
the great
٩ (9)
(9)
And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day - You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment."
٤٠:١٠
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved kafarū
disbelieved
يُنَادَوْنَ will be cried out to them yunādawna
will be cried out to them
لَمَقْتُ Certainly Allah's hatred lamaqtu
Certainly Allah's hatred
ٱللَّهِ Certainly Allah's hatred l-lahi
Certainly Allah's hatred
أَكْبَرُ (was) greater akbaru
(was) greater
مِن than min
than
مَّقْتِكُمْ your hatred maqtikum
your hatred
أَنفُسَكُمْ (of) yourselves anfusakum
(of) yourselves
إِذْ when idh
when
تُدْعَوْنَ you were called tud'ʿawna
you were called
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ the faith l-īmāni
the faith
فَتَكْفُرُونَ and you disbelieved fatakfurūna
and you disbelieved
١٠ (10)
(10)
Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."
٤٠:١١
قَالُوا۟ They (will) say qālū
They (will) say
رَبَّنَآ Our Lord rabbanā
Our Lord
أَمَتَّنَا You gave us death amattanā
You gave us death
ٱثْنَتَيْنِ twice ith'natayni
twice
وَأَحْيَيْتَنَا and You gave us life wa-aḥyaytanā
and You gave us life
ٱثْنَتَيْنِ twice ith'natayni
twice
فَٱعْتَرَفْنَا and we confess fa-iʿ'tarafnā
and we confess
بِذُنُوبِنَا our sins bidhunūbinā
our sins
فَهَلْ So is (there) fahal
So is (there)
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
خُرُوجٍۢ get out khurūjin
get out
مِّن any min
any
سَبِيلٍۢ way sabīlin
way
١١ (11)
(11)
They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"
٤٠:١٢
ذَٰلِكُم That dhālikum
That
بِأَنَّهُۥٓ (is) because bi-annahu
(is) because
إِذَا when idhā
when
دُعِىَ Allah was invoked duʿiya
Allah was invoked
ٱللَّهُ Allah was invoked l-lahu
Allah was invoked
وَحْدَهُۥ Alone waḥdahu
Alone
كَفَرْتُمْ ۖ you disbelieved kafartum
you disbelieved
وَإِن but if wa-in
but if
يُشْرَكْ (others) were associated yush'rak
(others) were associated
بِهِۦ with Him bihi
with Him
تُؤْمِنُوا۟ ۚ you believed tu'minū
you believed
فَٱلْحُكْمُ So the judgment fal-ḥuk'mu
So the judgment
لِلَّهِ (is) with Allah lillahi
(is) with Allah
ٱلْعَلِىِّ the Most High l-ʿaliyi
the Most High
ٱلْكَبِيرِ the Most Great l-kabīri
the Most Great
١٢ (12)
(12)
[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."
٤٠:١٣
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
يُرِيكُمْ shows you yurīkum
shows you
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ His Signs āyātihi
His Signs
وَيُنَزِّلُ and sends down wayunazzilu
and sends down
لَكُم for you lakum
for you
مِّنَ from mina
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky l-samāi
the sky
رِزْقًۭا ۚ provision riz'qan
provision
وَمَا But (does) not wamā
But (does) not
يَتَذَكَّرُ take heed yatadhakkaru
take heed
إِلَّا except illā
except
مَن (one) who man
(one) who
يُنِيبُ turns yunību
turns
١٣ (13)
(13)
It is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
٤٠:١٤
فَٱدْعُوا۟ So invoke fa-id'ʿū
So invoke
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
مُخْلِصِينَ (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna
(being) sincere
لَهُ to Him lahu
to Him
ٱلدِّينَ (in) the religion l-dīna
(in) the religion
وَلَوْ even though walaw
even though
كَرِهَ dislike (it) kariha
dislike (it)
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
the disbelievers
١٤ (14)
(14)
So invoke Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
٤٠:١٥
رَفِيعُ Possessor of the Highest Ranks rafīʿu
Possessor of the Highest Ranks
ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتِ Possessor of the Highest Ranks l-darajāti
Possessor of the Highest Ranks
ذُو Owner (of) the Throne dhū
Owner (of) the Throne
ٱلْعَرْشِ Owner (of) the Throne l-ʿarshi
Owner (of) the Throne
يُلْقِى He places yul'qī
He places
ٱلرُّوحَ the inspiration l-rūḥa
the inspiration
مِنْ of min
of
أَمْرِهِۦ His Command amrihi
His Command
عَلَىٰ upon ʿalā
upon
مَن whom man
whom
يَشَآءُ He wills yashāu
He wills
مِنْ of min
of
عِبَادِهِۦ His slaves ʿibādihi
His slaves
لِيُنذِرَ to warn liyundhira
to warn
يَوْمَ (of the) Day yawma
(of the) Day
ٱلتَّلَاقِ (of) the Meeting l-talāqi
(of) the Meeting
١٥ (15)
(15)
[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command [i.e., revelation] upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.
٤٠:١٦
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma
(The) Day
هُم they hum
they
بَـٰرِزُونَ ۖ come forth bārizūna
come forth
لَا not
not
يَخْفَىٰ is hidden yakhfā
is hidden
عَلَى from ʿalā
from
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
مِنْهُمْ about them min'hum
about them
شَىْءٌۭ ۚ anything shayon
anything
لِّمَنِ For whom limani
For whom
ٱلْمُلْكُ (is) the Dominion l-mul'ku
(is) the Dominion
ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ this Day l-yawma
this Day
لِلَّهِ For Allah lillahi
For Allah
ٱلْوَٰحِدِ the One l-wāḥidi
the One
ٱلْقَهَّارِ the Irresistible l-qahāri
the Irresistible
١٦ (16)
(16)
The Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.
٤٠:١٧
ٱلْيَوْمَ This Day al-yawma
This Day
تُجْزَىٰ will be recompensed tuj'zā
will be recompensed
كُلُّ every kullu
every
نَفْسٍۭ soul nafsin
soul
بِمَا for what bimā
for what
كَسَبَتْ ۚ it earned kasabat
it earned
لَا No
No
ظُلْمَ injustice ẓul'ma
injustice
ٱلْيَوْمَ ۚ today l-yawma
today
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
سَرِيعُ (is) Swift sarīʿu
(is) Swift
ٱلْحِسَابِ (in) Account l-ḥisābi
(in) Account
١٧ (17)
(17)
This Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
٤٠:١٨
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ And warn them wa-andhir'hum
And warn them
يَوْمَ (of the) Day yawma
(of the) Day
ٱلْـَٔازِفَةِ the Approaching l-āzifati
the Approaching
إِذِ when idhi
when
ٱلْقُلُوبُ the hearts l-qulūbu
the hearts
لَدَى (are) at ladā
(are) at
ٱلْحَنَاجِرِ the throats l-ḥanājiri
the throats
كَـٰظِمِينَ ۚ choked kāẓimīna
choked
مَا Not
Not
لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ for the wrongdoers lilẓẓālimīna
for the wrongdoers
مِنْ any min
any
حَمِيمٍۢ intimate friend ḥamīmin
intimate friend
وَلَا and no walā
and no
شَفِيعٍۢ intercessor shafīʿin
intercessor
يُطَاعُ (who) is obeyed yuṭāʿu
(who) is obeyed
١٨ (18)
(18)
And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
٤٠:١٩
يَعْلَمُ He knows yaʿlamu
He knows
خَآئِنَةَ (the) stealthy glance khāinata
(the) stealthy glance
ٱلْأَعْيُنِ (the) stealthy glance l-aʿyuni
(the) stealthy glance
وَمَا and what wamā
and what
تُخْفِى conceal tukh'fī
conceal
ٱلصُّدُورُ the breasts l-ṣudūru
the breasts
١٩ (19)
(19)
He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
٤٠:٢٠
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu
And Allah
يَقْضِى judges yaqḍī
judges
بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ in truth bil-ḥaqi
in truth
وَٱلَّذِينَ while those (whom) wa-alladhīna
while those (whom)
يَدْعُونَ they invoke yadʿūna
they invoke
مِن besides Him min
besides Him
دُونِهِۦ besides Him dūnihi
besides Him
لَا not
not
يَقْضُونَ they judge yaqḍūna
they judge
بِشَىْءٍ ۗ with anything bishayin
with anything
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu
(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلْبَصِيرُ the All-Seer l-baṣīru
the All-Seer
٢٠ (20)
(20)
And Allāh judges with truth, while those they invoke besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, Allāh - He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
٤٠:٢١
۞ أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam
Do not
يَسِيرُوا۟ they travel yasīrū
they travel
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth l-arḍi
the earth
فَيَنظُرُوا۟ and see fayanẓurū
and see
كَيْفَ how kayfa
how
كَانَ was kāna
was
عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end ʿāqibatu
(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who alladhīna
(of) those who
كَانُوا۟ were kānū
were
مِن before them min
before them
قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ before them qablihim
before them
كَانُوا۟ They were kānū
They were
هُمْ [they] hum
[they]
أَشَدَّ superior ashadda
superior
مِنْهُمْ to them min'hum
to them
قُوَّةًۭ (in) strength quwwatan
(in) strength
وَءَاثَارًۭا and (in) impressions waāthāran
and (in) impressions
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the land l-arḍi
the land
فَأَخَذَهُمُ but Allah seized them fa-akhadhahumu
but Allah seized them
ٱللَّهُ but Allah seized them l-lahu
but Allah seized them
بِذُنُوبِهِمْ for their sins bidhunūbihim
for their sins
وَمَا and not wamā
and not
كَانَ was kāna
was
لَهُم for them lahum
for them
مِّنَ against mina
against
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
مِن any min
any
وَاقٍۢ protector wāqin
protector
٢١ (21)
(21)
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allāh seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allāh any protector.
٤٠:٢٢
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika
That
بِأَنَّهُمْ (was) because [they] bi-annahum
(was) because [they]
كَانَت used to come to them kānat
used to come to them
تَّأْتِيهِمْ used to come to them tatīhim
used to come to them
رُسُلُهُم their Messengers rusuluhum
their Messengers
بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ with clear proofs bil-bayināti
with clear proofs
فَكَفَرُوا۟ but they disbelieved fakafarū
but they disbelieved
فَأَخَذَهُمُ So Allah seized them fa-akhadhahumu
So Allah seized them
ٱللَّهُ ۚ So Allah seized them l-lahu
So Allah seized them
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He innahu
Indeed, He
قَوِىٌّۭ (is) All-Strong qawiyyun
(is) All-Strong
شَدِيدُ severe shadīdu
severe
ٱلْعِقَابِ (in) punishment l-ʿiqābi
(in) punishment
٢٢ (22)
(22)
That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
٤٠:٢٣
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad
And certainly
أَرْسَلْنَا We sent arsalnā
We sent
مُوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
Musa
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا with Our Signs biāyātinā
with Our Signs
وَسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ and an authority wasul'ṭānin
and an authority
مُّبِينٍ clear mubīnin
clear
٢٣ (23)
(23)
And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority
٤٠:٢٤
إِلَىٰ To ilā
To
فِرْعَوْنَ Firaun fir'ʿawna
Firaun
وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ Haman wahāmāna
Haman
وَقَـٰرُونَ and Qarun waqārūna
and Qarun
فَقَالُوا۟ but they said faqālū
but they said
سَـٰحِرٌۭ A magician sāḥirun
A magician
كَذَّابٌۭ a liar kadhābun
a liar
٢٤ (24)
(24)
To Pharaoh, Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."
٤٠:٢٥
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā
Then when
جَآءَهُم he brought to them jāahum
he brought to them
بِٱلْحَقِّ the truth bil-ḥaqi
the truth
مِنْ from min
from
عِندِنَا Us ʿindinā
Us
قَالُوا۟ they said qālū
they said
ٱقْتُلُوٓا۟ Kill uq'tulū
Kill
أَبْنَآءَ (the) sons abnāa
(the) sons
ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who alladhīna
(of) those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe āmanū
believe
مَعَهُۥ with him maʿahu
with him
وَٱسْتَحْيُوا۟ and let live wa-is'taḥyū
and let live
نِسَآءَهُمْ ۚ their women nisāahum
their women
وَمَا And not wamā
And not
كَيْدُ (is the) plot kaydu
(is the) plot
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
(of) the disbelievers
إِلَّا but illā
but
فِى in
in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢ error ḍalālin
error
٢٥ (25)
(25)
And when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, "Kill the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their women alive." But the plan of the disbelievers is not except in error.
٤٠:٢٦
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
ذَرُونِىٓ Leave me dharūnī
Leave me
أَقْتُلْ (so that) I kill aqtul
(so that) I kill
مُوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
Musa
وَلْيَدْعُ and let him call walyadʿu
and let him call
رَبَّهُۥٓ ۖ his Lord rabbahu
his Lord
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
أَخَافُ [I] fear akhāfu
[I] fear
أَن that an
that
يُبَدِّلَ he will change yubaddila
he will change
دِينَكُمْ your religion dīnakum
your religion
أَوْ or aw
or
أَن that an
that
يُظْهِرَ he may cause to appear yuẓ'hira
he may cause to appear
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the land l-arḍi
the land
ٱلْفَسَادَ the corruption l-fasāda
the corruption
٢٦ (26)
(26)
And Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption in the land."
٤٠:٢٧
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
مُوسَىٰٓ Musa mūsā
Musa
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
عُذْتُ [I] seek refuge ʿudh'tu
[I] seek refuge
بِرَبِّى in my Lord birabbī
in my Lord
وَرَبِّكُم and your Lord warabbikum
and your Lord
مِّن from min
from
كُلِّ every kulli
every
مُتَكَبِّرٍۢ arrogant one mutakabbirin
arrogant one
لَّا not
not
يُؤْمِنُ who believes yu'minu
who believes
بِيَوْمِ (in the) Day biyawmi
(in the) Day
ٱلْحِسَابِ (of) the Account l-ḥisābi
(of) the Account
٢٧ (27)
(27)
But Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."
٤٠:٢٨
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
رَجُلٌۭ a man rajulun
a man
مُّؤْمِنٌۭ believing mu'minun
believing
مِّنْ from min
from
ءَالِ (the) family āli
(the) family
فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna
(of) Firaun
يَكْتُمُ who conceal(ed) yaktumu
who conceal(ed)
إِيمَـٰنَهُۥٓ his faith īmānahu
his faith
أَتَقْتُلُونَ Will you kill ataqtulūna
Will you kill
رَجُلًا a man rajulan
a man
أَن because an
because
يَقُولَ he says yaqūla
he says
رَبِّىَ My Lord rabbiya
My Lord
ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah l-lahu
(is) Allah
وَقَدْ and indeed waqad
and indeed
جَآءَكُم he has brought you jāakum
he has brought you
بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ clear proofs bil-bayināti
clear proofs
مِن from min
from
رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ your Lord rabbikum
your Lord
وَإِن And if wa-in
And if
يَكُ he is yaku
he is
كَـٰذِبًۭا a liar kādhiban
a liar
فَعَلَيْهِ then upon him faʿalayhi
then upon him
كَذِبُهُۥ ۖ (is) his lie kadhibuhu
(is) his lie
وَإِن and if wa-in
and if
يَكُ he is yaku
he is
صَادِقًۭا truthful ṣādiqan
truthful
يُصِبْكُم (there) will strike you yuṣib'kum
(there) will strike you
بَعْضُ some (of) baʿḍu
some (of)
ٱلَّذِى (that) which alladhī
(that) which
يَعِدُكُمْ ۖ he threatens you yaʿidukum
he threatens you
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
لَا (does) not
(does) not
يَهْدِى guide yahdī
guide
مَنْ (one) who man
(one) who
هُوَ [he] huwa
[he]
مُسْرِفٌۭ (is) a transgressor mus'rifun
(is) a transgressor
كَذَّابٌۭ a liar kadhābun
a liar
٢٨ (28)
(28)
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allāh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allāh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.
٤٠:٢٩
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
لَكُمُ For you lakumu
For you
ٱلْمُلْكُ (is) the kingdom l-mul'ku
(is) the kingdom
ٱلْيَوْمَ today l-yawma
today
ظَـٰهِرِينَ dominant ẓāhirīna
dominant
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the land l-arḍi
the land
فَمَن but who faman
but who
يَنصُرُنَا will help us yanṣurunā
will help us
مِنۢ from min
from
بَأْسِ (the) punishment basi
(the) punishment
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
إِن if in
if
جَآءَنَا ۚ it came to us jāanā
it came to us
قَالَ Said qāla
Said
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
مَآ Not
Not
أُرِيكُمْ I show you urīkum
I show you
إِلَّا except illā
except
مَآ what
what
أَرَىٰ I see arā
I see
وَمَآ and not wamā
and not
أَهْدِيكُمْ I guide you ahdīkum
I guide you
إِلَّا except illā
except
سَبِيلَ (to the) path sabīla
(to the) path
ٱلرَّشَادِ the right l-rashādi
the right
٢٩ (29)
(29)
O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."
٤٠:٣٠
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
ٱلَّذِىٓ (he) who alladhī
(he) who
ءَامَنَ believed āmana
believed
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
إِنِّىٓ Indeed I innī
Indeed I
أَخَافُ [I] fear akhāfu
[I] fear
عَلَيْكُم for you ʿalaykum
for you
مِّثْلَ like mith'la
like
يَوْمِ (the) day yawmi
(the) day
ٱلْأَحْزَابِ (of) the companies l-aḥzābi
(of) the companies
٣٠ (30)
(30)
And he who believed said, "O my people, indeed I fear for you [a fate] like the day of the companies -
٤٠:٣١
مِثْلَ Like mith'la
Like
دَأْبِ (the) plight dabi
(the) plight
قَوْمِ (of the) people qawmi
(of the) people
نُوحٍۢ (of) Nuh nūḥin
(of) Nuh
وَعَادٍۢ and Aad waʿādin
and Aad
وَثَمُودَ and Thamud wathamūda
and Thamud
وَٱلَّذِينَ and those wa-alladhīna
and those
مِنۢ after them min
after them
بَعْدِهِمْ ۚ after them baʿdihim
after them
وَمَا And Allah (does) not wamā
And Allah (does) not
ٱللَّهُ And Allah (does) not l-lahu
And Allah (does) not
يُرِيدُ want yurīdu
want
ظُلْمًۭا injustice ẓul'man
injustice
لِّلْعِبَادِ for (His) slaves lil'ʿibādi
for (His) slaves
٣١ (31)
(31)
Like the custom of the people of Noah and of ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them. And Allāh wants no injustice for [His] servants.
٤٠:٣٢
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi
And O my people
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
أَخَافُ [I] fear akhāfu
[I] fear
عَلَيْكُمْ for you ʿalaykum
for you
يَوْمَ (the) Day yawma
(the) Day
ٱلتَّنَادِ (of) Calling l-tanādi
(of) Calling
٣٢ (32)
(32)
And O my people, indeed I fear for you the Day of Calling -
٤٠:٣٣
يَوْمَ A Day yawma
A Day
تُوَلُّونَ you will turn back tuwallūna
you will turn back
مُدْبِرِينَ fleeing mud'birīna
fleeing
مَا not
not
لَكُم for you lakum
for you
مِّنَ from mina
from
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
مِنْ any min
any
عَاصِمٍۢ ۗ protector ʿāṣimin
protector
وَمَن And whoever waman
And whoever
يُضْلِلِ Allah lets go astray yuḍ'lili
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ Allah lets go astray l-lahu
Allah lets go astray
فَمَا then not famā
then not
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
مِنْ any min
any
هَادٍۢ guide hādin
guide
٣٣ (33)
(33)
The Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.
٤٠:٣٤
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad
And indeed
جَآءَكُمْ came to you jāakum
came to you
يُوسُفُ Yusuf yūsufu
Yusuf
مِن before min
before
قَبْلُ before qablu
before
بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ with clear proofs bil-bayināti
with clear proofs
فَمَا but not famā
but not
زِلْتُمْ you ceased zil'tum
you ceased
فِى in
in
شَكٍّۢ doubt shakkin
doubt
مِّمَّا about what mimmā
about what
جَآءَكُم he brought to you jāakum
he brought to you
بِهِۦ ۖ [with it] bihi
[with it]
حَتَّىٰٓ until ḥattā
until
إِذَا when idhā
when
هَلَكَ he died halaka
he died
قُلْتُمْ you said qul'tum
you said
لَن Never lan
Never
يَبْعَثَ will Allah raise yabʿatha
will Allah raise
ٱللَّهُ will Allah raise l-lahu
will Allah raise
مِنۢ after him min
after him
بَعْدِهِۦ after him baʿdihi
after him
رَسُولًۭا ۚ a Messenger rasūlan
a Messenger
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
يُضِلُّ Allah lets go astray yuḍillu
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ Allah lets go astray l-lahu
Allah lets go astray
مَنْ who man
who
هُوَ [he] huwa
[he]
مُسْرِفٌۭ (is) a transgressor mus'rifun
(is) a transgressor
مُّرْتَابٌ a doubter mur'tābun
a doubter
٣٤ (34)
(34)
And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."
٤٠:٣٥
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna
Those who
يُجَـٰدِلُونَ dispute yujādilūna
dispute
فِىٓ concerning
concerning
ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Signs āyāti
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
بِغَيْرِ without bighayri
without
سُلْطَـٰنٍ any authority sul'ṭānin
any authority
أَتَىٰهُمْ ۖ (having) come to them atāhum
(having) come to them
كَبُرَ (it) is greatly kabura
(it) is greatly
مَقْتًا hateful maqtan
hateful
عِندَ near Allah ʿinda
near Allah
ٱللَّهِ near Allah l-lahi
near Allah
وَعِندَ and near waʿinda
and near
ٱلَّذِينَ those alladhīna
those
ءَامَنُوا۟ ۚ who believe āmanū
who believe
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
يَطْبَعُ Allah sets a seal yaṭbaʿu
Allah sets a seal
ٱللَّهُ Allah sets a seal l-lahu
Allah sets a seal
عَلَىٰ over ʿalā
over
كُلِّ every kulli
every
قَلْبِ heart qalbi
heart
مُتَكَبِّرٍۢ (of) an arrogant mutakabbirin
(of) an arrogant
جَبَّارٍۢ tyrant jabbārin
tyrant
٣٥ (35)
(35)
Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allāh and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allāh seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.
٤٠:٣٦
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
يَـٰهَـٰمَـٰنُ O Haman yāhāmānu
O Haman
ٱبْنِ Construct ib'ni
Construct
لِى for me
for me
صَرْحًۭا a tower ṣarḥan
a tower
لَّعَلِّىٓ that I may laʿallī
that I may
أَبْلُغُ reach ablughu
reach
ٱلْأَسْبَـٰبَ the ways l-asbāba
the ways
٣٦ (36)
(36)
And Pharaoh said, "O Hāmān, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways -
٤٠:٣٧
أَسْبَـٰبَ (The) ways asbāba
(The) ways
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (to) the heavens l-samāwāti
(to) the heavens
فَأَطَّلِعَ so I may look fa-aṭṭaliʿa
so I may look
إِلَىٰٓ at ilā
at
إِلَـٰهِ (the) God ilāhi
(the) God
مُوسَىٰ (of) Musa mūsā
(of) Musa
وَإِنِّى and indeed, I wa-innī
and indeed, I
لَأَظُنُّهُۥ [I] surely think him la-aẓunnuhu
[I] surely think him
كَـٰذِبًۭا ۚ (to be) a liar kādhiban
(to be) a liar
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika
And thus
زُيِّنَ was made fair-seeming zuyyina
was made fair-seeming
لِفِرْعَوْنَ to Firaun lifir'ʿawna
to Firaun
سُوٓءُ (the) evil sūu
(the) evil
عَمَلِهِۦ (of) his deed ʿamalihi
(of) his deed
وَصُدَّ and he was averted waṣudda
and he was averted
عَنِ from ʿani
from
ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۚ the way l-sabīli
the way
وَمَا And not wamā
And not
كَيْدُ (was the) plot kaydu
(was the) plot
فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna
(of) Firaun
إِلَّا except illā
except
فِى in
in
تَبَابٍۢ ruin tabābin
ruin
٣٧ (37)
(37)
The ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.
٤٠:٣٨
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
ٱلَّذِىٓ the one who alladhī
the one who
ءَامَنَ believed āmana
believed
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
ٱتَّبِعُونِ Follow me ittabiʿūni
Follow me
أَهْدِكُمْ I will guide you ahdikum
I will guide you
سَبِيلَ (to the) way sabīla
(to the) way
ٱلرَّشَادِ the right l-rashādi
the right
٣٨ (38)
(38)
And he who believed said, "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the way of right conduct.
٤٠:٣٩
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
إِنَّمَا Only innamā
Only
هَـٰذِهِ this hādhihi
this
ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ the life l-ḥayatu
the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world l-dun'yā
(of) the world
مَتَـٰعٌۭ (is) enjoyment matāʿun
(is) enjoyment
وَإِنَّ and indeed wa-inna
and indeed
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ the Hereafter l-ākhirata
the Hereafter
هِىَ it hiya
it
دَارُ (is the) home dāru
(is the) home
ٱلْقَرَارِ (of) settlement l-qarāri
(of) settlement
٣٩ (39)
(39)
O my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.
٤٠:٤٠
مَنْ Whoever man
Whoever
عَمِلَ does ʿamila
does
سَيِّئَةًۭ an evil sayyi-atan
an evil
فَلَا then not falā
then not
يُجْزَىٰٓ he will be recompensed yuj'zā
he will be recompensed
إِلَّا but illā
but
مِثْلَهَا ۖ (the) like thereof mith'lahā
(the) like thereof
وَمَنْ and whoever waman
and whoever
عَمِلَ does ʿamila
does
صَـٰلِحًۭا righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan
righteous (deeds)
مِّن of min
of
ذَكَرٍ male dhakarin
male
أَوْ or aw
or
أُنثَىٰ female unthā
female
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
while he
مُؤْمِنٌۭ (is) a believer mu'minun
(is) a believer
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those fa-ulāika
then those
يَدْخُلُونَ will enter yadkhulūna
will enter
ٱلْجَنَّةَ Paradise l-janata
Paradise
يُرْزَقُونَ they will be given provision yur'zaqūna
they will be given provision
فِيهَا in it fīhā
in it
بِغَيْرِ without bighayri
without
حِسَابٍۢ account ḥisābin
account
٤٠ (40)
(40)
Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.
٤٠:٤١
۞ وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi
And O my people
مَا What (is)
What (is)
لِىٓ for me
for me
أَدْعُوكُمْ (that) I call you adʿūkum
(that) I call you
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلنَّجَوٰةِ the salvation l-najati
the salvation
وَتَدْعُونَنِىٓ while you call me watadʿūnanī
while you call me
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire l-nāri
the Fire
٤١ (41)
(41)
And O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?
٤٠:٤٢
تَدْعُونَنِى You call me tadʿūnanī
You call me
لِأَكْفُرَ that I disbelieve li-akfura
that I disbelieve
بِٱللَّهِ in Allah bil-lahi
in Allah
وَأُشْرِكَ and (to) associate wa-ush'rika
and (to) associate
بِهِۦ with Him bihi
with Him
مَا what
what
لَيْسَ not laysa
not
لِى for me
for me
بِهِۦ of it bihi
of it
عِلْمٌۭ any knowledge ʿil'mun
any knowledge
وَأَنَا۠ and I wa-anā
and I
أَدْعُوكُمْ call you adʿūkum
call you
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلْعَزِيزِ the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi
the All-Mighty
ٱلْغَفَّـٰرِ the Oft-Forgiving l-ghafāri
the Oft-Forgiving
٤٢ (42)
(42)
You invite me to disbelieve in Allāh and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
٤٠:٤٣
لَا No
No
جَرَمَ doubt jarama
doubt
أَنَّمَا that what annamā
that what
تَدْعُونَنِىٓ you call me tadʿūnanī
you call me
إِلَيْهِ to it ilayhi
to it
لَيْسَ not laysa
not
لَهُۥ for it lahu
for it
دَعْوَةٌۭ a claim daʿwatun
a claim
فِى in
in
ٱلدُّنْيَا the world l-dun'yā
the world
وَلَا and not walā
and not
فِى in
in
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ the Hereafter l-ākhirati
the Hereafter
وَأَنَّ and that wa-anna
and that
مَرَدَّنَآ our return maraddanā
our return
إِلَى (is) to ilā
(is) to
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
وَأَنَّ and that wa-anna
and that
ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ the transgressors l-mus'rifīna
the transgressors
هُمْ they hum
they
أَصْحَـٰبُ (will be the) companions aṣḥābu
(will be the) companions
ٱلنَّارِ (of) the Fire l-nāri
(of) the Fire
٤٣ (43)
(43)
Assuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allāh, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.
٤٠:٤٤
فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ And you will remember fasatadhkurūna
And you will remember
مَآ what
what
أَقُولُ I say aqūlu
I say
لَكُمْ ۚ to you lakum
to you
وَأُفَوِّضُ and I entrust wa-ufawwiḍu
and I entrust
أَمْرِىٓ my affair amrī
my affair
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah l-lahi
Allah
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
بَصِيرٌۢ (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
(is) All-Seer
بِٱلْعِبَادِ of (His) slaves bil-ʿibādi
of (His) slaves
٤٤ (44)
(44)
And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."
٤٠:٤٥
فَوَقَىٰهُ So Allah protected him fawaqāhu
So Allah protected him
ٱللَّهُ So Allah protected him l-lahu
So Allah protected him
سَيِّـَٔاتِ (from the) evils sayyiāti
(from the) evils
مَا that
that
مَكَرُوا۟ ۖ they plotted makarū
they plotted
وَحَاقَ and enveloped waḥāqa
and enveloped
بِـَٔالِ (the) people biāli
(the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna
(of) Firaun
سُوٓءُ (the) worst sūu
(the) worst
ٱلْعَذَابِ punishment l-ʿadhābi
punishment
٤٥ (45)
(45)
So Allāh protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -
٤٠:٤٦
ٱلنَّارُ The Fire al-nāru
The Fire
يُعْرَضُونَ they are exposed yuʿ'raḍūna
they are exposed
عَلَيْهَا to it ʿalayhā
to it
غُدُوًّۭا morning ghuduwwan
morning
وَعَشِيًّۭا ۖ and evening waʿashiyyan
and evening
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma
And (the) Day
تَقُومُ (will be) established taqūmu
(will be) established
ٱلسَّاعَةُ the Hour l-sāʿatu
the Hour
أَدْخِلُوٓا۟ Cause to enter adkhilū
Cause to enter
ءَالَ (the) people āla
(the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna
(of) Firaun
أَشَدَّ (in the) severest ashadda
(in the) severest
ٱلْعَذَابِ punishment l-ʿadhābi
punishment
٤٦ (46)
(46)
The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
٤٠:٤٧
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh
And when
يَتَحَآجُّونَ they will dispute yataḥājjūna
they will dispute
فِى in
in
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire l-nāri
the Fire
فَيَقُولُ then will say fayaqūlu
then will say
ٱلضُّعَفَـٰٓؤُا۟ the weak l-ḍuʿafāu
the weak
لِلَّذِينَ to those who lilladhīna
to those who
ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ were arrogant is'takbarū
were arrogant
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
كُنَّا [we] were kunnā
[we] were
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
تَبَعًۭا followers tabaʿan
followers
فَهَلْ so can fahal
so can
أَنتُم you antum
you
مُّغْنُونَ avert mugh'nūna
avert
عَنَّا from us ʿannā
from us
نَصِيبًۭا a portion naṣīban
a portion
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire l-nāri
the Fire
٤٧ (47)
(47)
And [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"
٤٠:٤٨
قَالَ Will say qāla
Will say
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ (were) arrogant is'takbarū
(were) arrogant
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
كُلٌّۭ all kullun
all
فِيهَآ (are) in it fīhā
(are) in it
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
قَدْ certainly qad
certainly
حَكَمَ has judged ḥakama
has judged
بَيْنَ between bayna
between
ٱلْعِبَادِ (His) slaves l-ʿibādi
(His) slaves
٤٨ (48)
(48)
Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."
٤٠:٤٩
وَقَالَ And will say waqāla
And will say
ٱلَّذِينَ those alladhīna
those
فِى in
in
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire l-nāri
the Fire
لِخَزَنَةِ to (the) keepers likhazanati
to (the) keepers
جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell jahannama
(of) Hell
ٱدْعُوا۟ Call id'ʿū
Call
رَبَّكُمْ your Lord rabbakum
your Lord
يُخَفِّفْ (to) lighten yukhaffif
(to) lighten
عَنَّا for us ʿannā
for us
يَوْمًۭا a day yawman
a day
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment l-ʿadhābi
the punishment
٤٩ (49)
(49)
And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
٤٠:٥٠
قَالُوٓا۟ They (will) say qālū
They (will) say
أَوَلَمْ Did there not awalam
Did there not
تَكُ Did there not taku
Did there not
تَأْتِيكُمْ come to you tatīkum
come to you
رُسُلُكُم your Messengers rusulukum
your Messengers
بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ with clear proofs bil-bayināti
with clear proofs
قَالُوا۟ They (will) say qālū
They (will) say
بَلَىٰ ۚ Yes balā
Yes
قَالُوا۟ They (will) say qālū
They (will) say
فَٱدْعُوا۟ ۗ Then call fa-id'ʿū
Then call
وَمَا but not wamā
but not
دُعَـٰٓؤُا۟ (is the) call duʿāu
(is the) call
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
(of) the disbelievers
إِلَّا except illā
except
فِى in
in
ضَلَـٰلٍ error ḍalālin
error
٥٠ (50)
(50)
They will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."
٤٠:٥١
إِنَّا Indeed We innā
Indeed We
لَنَنصُرُ We will surely help lananṣuru
We will surely help
رُسُلَنَا Our Messengers rusulanā
Our Messengers
وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who wa-alladhīna
and those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe āmanū
believe
فِى in
in
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ the life l-ḥayati
the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world l-dun'yā
(of) the world
وَيَوْمَ and (on the) Day wayawma
and (on the) Day
يَقُومُ (when) will stand yaqūmu
(when) will stand
ٱلْأَشْهَـٰدُ the witnesses l-ashhādu
the witnesses
٥١ (51)
(51)
Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -
٤٠:٥٢
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma
(The) Day
لَا not
not
يَنفَعُ will benefit yanfaʿu
will benefit
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
the wrongdoers
مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ ۖ their excuse maʿdhiratuhum
their excuse
وَلَهُمُ and for them walahumu
and for them
ٱللَّعْنَةُ (is) the curse l-laʿnatu
(is) the curse
وَلَهُمْ and for them walahum
and for them
سُوٓءُ (is the) worst sūu
(is the) worst
ٱلدَّارِ home l-dāri
home
٥٢ (52)
(52)
The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].
٤٠:٥٣
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad
And certainly
ءَاتَيْنَا We gave ātaynā
We gave
مُوسَى Musa mūsā
Musa
ٱلْهُدَىٰ the guidance l-hudā
the guidance
وَأَوْرَثْنَا and We caused to inherit wa-awrathnā
and We caused to inherit
بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel banī
(the) Children of Israel
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla
(the) Children of Israel
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book l-kitāba
the Book
٥٣ (53)
(53)
And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture
٤٠:٥٤
هُدًۭى A guide hudan
A guide
وَذِكْرَىٰ and a reminder wadhik'rā
and a reminder
لِأُو۟لِى for those li-ulī
for those
ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ (of) understanding l-albābi
(of) understanding
٥٤ (54)
(54)
As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.
٤٠:٥٥
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir
So be patient
إِنَّ indeed inna
indeed
وَعْدَ (the) Promise of Allah waʿda
(the) Promise of Allah
ٱللَّهِ (the) Promise of Allah l-lahi
(the) Promise of Allah
حَقٌّۭ (is) true ḥaqqun
(is) true
وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ And ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfir
And ask forgiveness
لِذَنۢبِكَ for your sin lidhanbika
for your sin
وَسَبِّحْ and glorify wasabbiḥ
and glorify
بِحَمْدِ (the) praise biḥamdi
(the) praise
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
بِٱلْعَشِىِّ in the evening bil-ʿashiyi
in the evening
وَٱلْإِبْكَـٰرِ and the morning wal-ib'kāri
and the morning
٥٥ (55)
(55)
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
٤٠:٥٦
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
يُجَـٰدِلُونَ dispute yujādilūna
dispute
فِىٓ concerning
concerning
ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Signs āyāti
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
بِغَيْرِ without bighayri
without
سُلْطَـٰنٍ any authority sul'ṭānin
any authority
أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ (which) came to them atāhum
(which) came to them
إِن not in
not
فِى (is) in
(is) in
صُدُورِهِمْ their breasts ṣudūrihim
their breasts
إِلَّا but illā
but
كِبْرٌۭ greatness kib'run
greatness
مَّا not
not
هُم they hum
they
بِبَـٰلِغِيهِ ۚ (can) reach it bibālighīhi
(can) reach it
فَٱسْتَعِذْ So seek refuge fa-is'taʿidh
So seek refuge
بِٱللَّهِ ۖ in Allah bil-lahi
in Allah
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed He innahu
Indeed He
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu
(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلْبَصِيرُ the All-Seer l-baṣīru
the All-Seer
٥٦ (56)
(56)
Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.
٤٠:٥٧
لَخَلْقُ Surely, (the) creation lakhalqu
Surely, (the) creation
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens l-samāwāti
(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth wal-arḍi
and the earth
أَكْبَرُ (is) greater akbaru
(is) greater
مِنْ than min
than
خَلْقِ (the) creation khalqi
(the) creation
ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the mankind l-nāsi
(of) the mankind
وَلَـٰكِنَّ but walākinna
but
أَكْثَرَ most akthara
most
ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the people l-nāsi
(of) the people
لَا (do) not
(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ know yaʿlamūna
know
٥٧ (57)
(57)
The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
٤٠:٥٨
وَمَا And not wamā
And not
يَسْتَوِى (are) equal yastawī
(are) equal
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ the blind l-aʿmā
the blind
وَٱلْبَصِيرُ and the seeing wal-baṣīru
and the seeing
وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who wa-alladhīna
and those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe āmanū
believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟ and do waʿamilū
and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti
righteous deeds
وَلَا and not walā
and not
ٱلْمُسِىٓءُ ۚ the evildoer l-musīu
the evildoer
قَلِيلًۭا Little qalīlan
Little
مَّا (is) what
(is) what
تَتَذَكَّرُونَ you take heed tatadhakkarūna
you take heed
٥٨ (58)
(58)
And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.
٤٠:٥٩
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱلسَّاعَةَ the Hour l-sāʿata
the Hour
لَـَٔاتِيَةٌۭ (is) surely coming laātiyatun
(is) surely coming
لَّا no
no
رَيْبَ doubt rayba
doubt
فِيهَا in it fīhā
in it
وَلَـٰكِنَّ but walākinna
but
أَكْثَرَ most akthara
most
ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the people l-nāsi
(of) the people
لَا (do) not
(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَ believe yu'minūna
believe
٥٩ (59)
(59)
Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.
٤٠:٦٠
وَقَالَ And said waqāla
And said
رَبُّكُمُ your Lord rabbukumu
your Lord
ٱدْعُونِىٓ Call upon Me id'ʿūnī
Call upon Me
أَسْتَجِبْ I will respond astajib
I will respond
لَكُمْ ۚ to you lakum
to you
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ (are) proud yastakbirūna
(are) proud
عَنْ to ʿan
to
عِبَادَتِى worship Me ʿibādatī
worship Me
سَيَدْخُلُونَ will enter sayadkhulūna
will enter
جَهَنَّمَ Hell jahannama
Hell
دَاخِرِينَ (in) humiliation dākhirīna
(in) humiliation
٦٠ (60)
(60)
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
٤٠:٦١
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu
Allah
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
جَعَلَ made jaʿala
made
لَكُمُ for you lakumu
for you
ٱلَّيْلَ the night al-layla
the night
لِتَسْكُنُوا۟ that you may rest litaskunū
that you may rest
فِيهِ in it fīhi
in it
وَٱلنَّهَارَ and the day wal-nahāra
and the day
مُبْصِرًا ۚ giving visibility mub'ṣiran
giving visibility
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
لَذُو (is) Full (of) Bounty ladhū
(is) Full (of) Bounty
فَضْلٍ (is) Full (of) Bounty faḍlin
(is) Full (of) Bounty
عَلَى to ʿalā
to
ٱلنَّاسِ the people l-nāsi
the people
وَلَـٰكِنَّ but walākinna
but
أَكْثَرَ most akthara
most
ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the people l-nāsi
(of) the people
لَا (do) not
(do) not
يَشْكُرُونَ give thanks yashkurūna
give thanks
٦١ (61)
(61)
It is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight. Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.
٤٠:٦٢
ذَٰلِكُمُ That dhālikumu
That
ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah l-lahu
(is) Allah
رَبُّكُمْ your Lord rabbukum
your Lord
خَـٰلِقُ (the) Creator khāliqu
(the) Creator
كُلِّ (of) all kulli
(of) all
شَىْءٍۢ things shayin
things
لَّآ (there is) no
(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّا except illā
except
هُوَ ۖ Him huwa
Him
فَأَنَّىٰ So how fa-annā
So how
تُؤْفَكُونَ are you deluded tu'fakūna
are you deluded
٦٢ (62)
(62)
That is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
٤٠:٦٣
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
يُؤْفَكُ were deluded yu'faku
were deluded
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
كَانُوا۟ were kānū
were
بِـَٔايَـٰتِ (the) Signs biāyāti
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
يَجْحَدُونَ rejecting yajḥadūna
rejecting
٦٣ (63)
(63)
Thus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.
٤٠:٦٤
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu
Allah
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
جَعَلَ made jaʿala
made
لَكُمُ for you lakumu
for you
ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth l-arḍa
the earth
قَرَارًۭا a place of settlement qarāran
a place of settlement
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ and the sky wal-samāa
and the sky
بِنَآءًۭ a canopy bināan
a canopy
وَصَوَّرَكُمْ and He formed you waṣawwarakum
and He formed you
فَأَحْسَنَ and perfected fa-aḥsana
and perfected
صُوَرَكُمْ your forms ṣuwarakum
your forms
وَرَزَقَكُم and provided you warazaqakum
and provided you
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ ۚ the good things l-ṭayibāti
the good things
ذَٰلِكُمُ That dhālikumu
That
ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah l-lahu
(is) Allah
رَبُّكُمْ ۖ your Lord rabbukum
your Lord
فَتَبَارَكَ Then blessed (is) fatabāraka
Then blessed (is)
ٱللَّهُ Allah l-lahu
Allah
رَبُّ (the) Lord rabbu
(the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
(of) the worlds
٦٤ (64)
(64)
It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
٤٠:٦٥
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلْحَىُّ (is) the Ever-Living l-ḥayu
(is) the Ever-Living
لَآ (there is) no
(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّا but illā
but
هُوَ He huwa
He
فَٱدْعُوهُ so call Him fa-id'ʿūhu
so call Him
مُخْلِصِينَ (being) sincere mukh'liṣīna
(being) sincere
لَهُ to Him lahu
to Him
ٱلدِّينَ ۗ (in) the religion l-dīna
(in) the religion
ٱلْحَمْدُ All praise (be) l-ḥamdu
All praise (be)
لِلَّهِ to Allah lillahi
to Allah
رَبِّ (the) Lord rabbi
(the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
(of) the worlds
٦٥ (65)
(65)
He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
٤٠:٦٦
۞ قُلْ Say qul
Say
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
نُهِيتُ [I] have been forbidden nuhītu
[I] have been forbidden
أَنْ to an
to
أَعْبُدَ worship aʿbuda
worship
ٱلَّذِينَ those whom alladhīna
those whom
تَدْعُونَ you call tadʿūna
you call
مِن besides min
besides
دُونِ besides dūni
besides
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
لَمَّا when lammā
when
جَآءَنِىَ have come to me jāaniya
have come to me
ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ the clear proofs l-bayinātu
the clear proofs
مِن from min
from
رَّبِّى my Lord rabbī
my Lord
وَأُمِرْتُ and I am commanded wa-umir'tu
and I am commanded
أَنْ to an
to
أُسْلِمَ submit us'lima
submit
لِرَبِّ to (the) Lord lirabbi
to (the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
(of) the worlds
٦٦ (66)
(66)
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."
٤٠:٦٧
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
خَلَقَكُم created you khalaqakum
created you
مِّن from min
from
تُرَابٍۢ dust turābin
dust
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
مِن from min
from
نُّطْفَةٍۢ a semen-drop nuṭ'fatin
a semen-drop
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
مِنْ from min
from
عَلَقَةٍۢ a clinging substance ʿalaqatin
a clinging substance
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
يُخْرِجُكُمْ He brings you out yukh'rijukum
He brings you out
طِفْلًۭا (as) a child ṭif'lan
(as) a child
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ lets you reach litablughū
lets you reach
أَشُدَّكُمْ your maturity ashuddakum
your maturity
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
لِتَكُونُوا۟ lets you become litakūnū
lets you become
شُيُوخًۭا ۚ old shuyūkhan
old
وَمِنكُم and among you waminkum
and among you
مَّن (is he) who man
(is he) who
يُتَوَفَّىٰ dies yutawaffā
dies
مِن before min
before
قَبْلُ ۖ before qablu
before
وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ and lets you reach walitablughū
and lets you reach
أَجَلًۭا a term ajalan
a term
مُّسَمًّۭى specified musamman
specified
وَلَعَلَّكُمْ and that you may walaʿallakum
and that you may
تَعْقِلُونَ use reason taʿqilūna
use reason
٦٧ (67)
(67)
It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.
٤٠:٦٨
هُوَ He huwa
He
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
يُحْىِۦ gives life yuḥ'yī
gives life
وَيُمِيتُ ۖ and causes death wayumītu
and causes death
فَإِذَا And when fa-idhā
And when
قَضَىٰٓ He decrees qaḍā
He decrees
أَمْرًۭا a matter amran
a matter
فَإِنَّمَا then only fa-innamā
then only
يَقُولُ He says yaqūlu
He says
لَهُۥ to it lahu
to it
كُن Be kun
Be
فَيَكُونُ and it is fayakūnu
and it is
٦٨ (68)
(68)
He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
٤٠:٦٩
أَلَمْ Do not alam
Do not
تَرَ you see tara
you see
إِلَى [to] ilā
[to]
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
يُجَـٰدِلُونَ dispute yujādilūna
dispute
فِىٓ concerning
concerning
ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Signs āyāti
(the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
أَنَّىٰ How annā
How
يُصْرَفُونَ they are turned away yuṣ'rafūna
they are turned away
٦٩ (69)
(69)
Do you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?
٤٠:٧٠
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna
Those who
كَذَّبُوا۟ deny kadhabū
deny
بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ the Book bil-kitābi
the Book
وَبِمَآ and with what wabimā
and with what
أَرْسَلْنَا We sent arsalnā
We sent
بِهِۦ with it bihi
with it
رُسُلَنَا ۖ Our Messengers rusulanā
Our Messengers
فَسَوْفَ but soon fasawfa
but soon
يَعْلَمُونَ they will know yaʿlamūna
they will know
٧٠ (70)
(70)
Those who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,
٤٠:٧١
إِذِ When idhi
When
ٱلْأَغْلَـٰلُ the iron collars l-aghlālu
the iron collars
فِىٓ (will be) around
(will be) around
أَعْنَـٰقِهِمْ their necks aʿnāqihim
their necks
وَٱلسَّلَـٰسِلُ and the chains wal-salāsilu
and the chains
يُسْحَبُونَ they will be dragged yus'ḥabūna
they will be dragged
٧١ (71)
(71)
When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged
٤٠:٧٢
فِى In
In
ٱلْحَمِيمِ the boiling water l-ḥamīmi
the boiling water
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
فِى in
in
ٱلنَّارِ the Fire l-nāri
the Fire
يُسْجَرُونَ they will be burned yus'jarūna
they will be burned
٧٢ (72)
(72)
In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].
٤٠:٧٣
ثُمَّ Then thumma
Then
قِيلَ it will be said qīla
it will be said
لَهُمْ to them lahum
to them
أَيْنَ Where ayna
Where
مَا (is) that which
(is) that which
كُنتُمْ you used to kuntum
you used to
تُشْرِكُونَ associate tush'rikūna
associate
٧٣ (73)
(73)
Then it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]
٤٠:٧٤
مِن Other than min
Other than
دُونِ Other than dūni
Other than
ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah l-lahi
Allah
قَالُوا۟ They will say qālū
They will say
ضَلُّوا۟ They have departed ḍallū
They have departed
عَنَّا from us ʿannā
from us
بَل Nay bal
Nay
لَّمْ Not lam
Not
نَكُن we used to nakun
we used to
نَّدْعُوا۟ [we] call nadʿū
[we] call
مِن before min
before
قَبْلُ before qablu
before
شَيْـًۭٔا ۚ anything shayan
anything
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
يُضِلُّ Allah lets go astray yuḍillu
Allah lets go astray
ٱللَّهُ Allah lets go astray l-lahu
Allah lets go astray
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
the disbelievers
٧٤ (74)
(74)
Other than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.
٤٠:٧٥
ذَٰلِكُم That was dhālikum
That was
بِمَا because bimā
because
كُنتُمْ you used to kuntum
you used to
تَفْرَحُونَ rejoice tafraḥūna
rejoice
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth l-arḍi
the earth
بِغَيْرِ without bighayri
without
ٱلْحَقِّ right l-ḥaqi
right
وَبِمَا and because wabimā
and because
كُنتُمْ you used to kuntum
you used to
تَمْرَحُونَ be insolent tamraḥūna
be insolent
٧٥ (75)
(75)
[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.
٤٠:٧٦
ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ Enter ud'khulū
Enter
أَبْوَٰبَ (the) gates abwāba
(the) gates
جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell jahannama
(of) Hell
خَـٰلِدِينَ (to) abide forever khālidīna
(to) abide forever
فِيهَا ۖ in it fīhā
in it
فَبِئْسَ and wretched is fabi'sa
and wretched is
مَثْوَى (the) abode mathwā
(the) abode
ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ (of) the arrogant l-mutakabirīna
(of) the arrogant
٧٦ (76)
(76)
Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
٤٠:٧٧
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir
So be patient
إِنَّ indeed inna
indeed
وَعْدَ (the) Promise waʿda
(the) Promise
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
حَقٌّۭ ۚ (is) true ḥaqqun
(is) true
فَإِمَّا And whether fa-immā
And whether
نُرِيَنَّكَ We show you nuriyannaka
We show you
بَعْضَ some baʿḍa
some
ٱلَّذِى (of) what alladhī
(of) what
نَعِدُهُمْ We have promised them naʿiduhum
We have promised them
أَوْ or aw
or
نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ We cause you to die natawaffayannaka
We cause you to die
فَإِلَيْنَا then to Us fa-ilaynā
then to Us
يُرْجَعُونَ they will be returned yur'jaʿūna
they will be returned
٧٧ (77)
(77)
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
٤٠:٧٨
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad
And certainly
أَرْسَلْنَا We have sent arsalnā
We have sent
رُسُلًۭا Messengers rusulan
Messengers
مِّن before you min
before you
قَبْلِكَ before you qablika
before you
مِنْهُم Among them min'hum
Among them
مَّن (are) who man
(are) who
قَصَصْنَا We have related qaṣaṣnā
We have related
عَلَيْكَ to you ʿalayka
to you
وَمِنْهُم and among them wamin'hum
and among them
مَّن (are) who man
(are) who
لَّمْ not lam
not
نَقْصُصْ We have related naqṣuṣ
We have related
عَلَيْكَ ۗ to you ʿalayka
to you
وَمَا And not wamā
And not
كَانَ is kāna
is
لِرَسُولٍ for any Messenger lirasūlin
for any Messenger
أَن that an
that
يَأْتِىَ he brings yatiya
he brings
بِـَٔايَةٍ a Sign biāyatin
a Sign
إِلَّا except illā
except
بِإِذْنِ by (the) permission bi-idh'ni
by (the) permission
ٱللَّهِ ۚ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā
So when
جَآءَ comes jāa
comes
أَمْرُ (the) Command amru
(the) Command
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
قُضِىَ it will be decided quḍiya
it will be decided
بِٱلْحَقِّ in truth bil-ḥaqi
in truth
وَخَسِرَ and will lose wakhasira
and will lose
هُنَالِكَ there hunālika
there
ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ the falsifiers l-mub'ṭilūna
the falsifiers
٧٨ (78)
(78)
And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
٤٠:٧٩
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu
Allah
ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
جَعَلَ made jaʿala
made
لَكُمُ for you lakumu
for you
ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمَ the cattle l-anʿāma
the cattle
لِتَرْكَبُوا۟ that you may ride litarkabū
that you may ride
مِنْهَا some of them min'hā
some of them
وَمِنْهَا and some of them wamin'hā
and some of them
تَأْكُلُونَ you eat takulūna
you eat
٧٩ (79)
(79)
It is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.
٤٠:٨٠
وَلَكُمْ And for you walakum
And for you
فِيهَا in them fīhā
in them
مَنَـٰفِعُ (are) benefits manāfiʿu
(are) benefits
وَلِتَبْلُغُوا۟ and that you may reach walitablughū
and that you may reach
عَلَيْهَا through them ʿalayhā
through them
حَاجَةًۭ a need ḥājatan
a need
فِى (that is) in
(that is) in
صُدُورِكُمْ your breasts ṣudūrikum
your breasts
وَعَلَيْهَا and upon them waʿalayhā
and upon them
وَعَلَى and upon waʿalā
and upon
ٱلْفُلْكِ the ships l-ful'ki
the ships
تُحْمَلُونَ you are carried tuḥ'malūna
you are carried
٨٠ (80)
(80)
And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts; and upon them and upon ships you are carried.
٤٠:٨١
وَيُرِيكُمْ And He shows you wayurīkum
And He shows you
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ His Signs āyātihi
His Signs
فَأَىَّ Then which fa-ayya
Then which
ءَايَـٰتِ (of the) Signs āyāti
(of the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
تُنكِرُونَ will you deny tunkirūna
will you deny
٨١ (81)
(81)
And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?
٤٠:٨٢
أَفَلَمْ Do they not afalam
Do they not
يَسِيرُوا۟ travel yasīrū
travel
فِى through
through
ٱلْأَرْضِ the land l-arḍi
the land
فَيَنظُرُوا۟ and see fayanẓurū
and see
كَيْفَ how kayfa
how
كَانَ was kāna
was
عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end ʿāqibatu
(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who alladhīna
(of) those who
مِن (were) before them min
(were) before them
قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ (were) before them qablihim
(were) before them
كَانُوٓا۟ They were kānū
They were
أَكْثَرَ more numerous akthara
more numerous
مِنْهُمْ than them min'hum
than them
وَأَشَدَّ and mightier wa-ashadda
and mightier
قُوَّةًۭ (in) strength quwwatan
(in) strength
وَءَاثَارًۭا and impressions waāthāran
and impressions
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the land l-arḍi
the land
فَمَآ but not famā
but not
أَغْنَىٰ availed aghnā
availed
عَنْهُم them ʿanhum
them
مَّا what
what
كَانُوا۟ they used to kānū
they used to
يَكْسِبُونَ earn yaksibūna
earn
٨٢ (82)
(82)
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
٤٠:٨٣
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā
Then when
جَآءَتْهُمْ came to them jāathum
came to them
رُسُلُهُم their Messengers rusuluhum
their Messengers
بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ with clear proofs bil-bayināti
with clear proofs
فَرِحُوا۟ they rejoiced fariḥū
they rejoiced
بِمَا in what bimā
in what
عِندَهُم they had ʿindahum
they had
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلْعِلْمِ the knowledge l-ʿil'mi
the knowledge
وَحَاقَ and enveloped waḥāqa
and enveloped
بِهِم them bihim
them
مَّا what
what
كَانُوا۟ they used to kānū
they used to
بِهِۦ [at it] bihi
[at it]
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ mock yastahziūna
mock
٨٣ (83)
(83)
And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
٤٠:٨٤
فَلَمَّا So when falammā
So when
رَأَوْا۟ they saw ra-aw
they saw
بَأْسَنَا Our punishment basanā
Our punishment
قَالُوٓا۟ they said qālū
they said
ءَامَنَّا We believe āmannā
We believe
بِٱللَّهِ in Allah bil-lahi
in Allah
وَحْدَهُۥ Alone waḥdahu
Alone
وَكَفَرْنَا and we disbelieve wakafarnā
and we disbelieve
بِمَا in what bimā
in what
كُنَّا we used to kunnā
we used to
بِهِۦ with Him bihi
with Him
مُشْرِكِينَ associate mush'rikīna
associate
٨٤ (84)
(84)
And when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."
٤٠:٨٥
فَلَمْ But did not falam
But did not
يَكُ But did not yaku
But did not
يَنفَعُهُمْ benefit them yanfaʿuhum
benefit them
إِيمَـٰنُهُمْ their faith īmānuhum
their faith
لَمَّا when lammā
when
رَأَوْا۟ they saw ra-aw
they saw
بَأْسَنَا ۖ Our punishment basanā
Our punishment
سُنَّتَ (Such is the) Way sunnata
(Such is the) Way
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلَّتِى which allatī
which
قَدْ (has) indeed qad
(has) indeed
خَلَتْ preceded khalat
preceded
فِى among
among
عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ His slaves ʿibādihi
His slaves
وَخَسِرَ And are lost wakhasira
And are lost
هُنَالِكَ there hunālika
there
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
the disbelievers
٨٥ (85)
(85)
But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
