بِسْمِ In (the) name bis'mi
In (the) name
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
the Most Merciful
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
٦٨:١
نٓ ۚ Nun noon
Nun
وَٱلْقَلَمِ By the pen wal-qalami
By the pen
وَمَا and what wamā
and what
يَسْطُرُونَ they write yasṭurūna
they write
١ (1)
(1)
Nūn. By the pen and what they inscribe,
٦٨:٢
مَآ Not
Not
أَنتَ you (are) anta
you (are)
بِنِعْمَةِ by (the) Grace biniʿ'mati
by (the) Grace
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
بِمَجْنُونٍۢ a madman bimajnūnin
a madman
٢ (2)
(2)
You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
٦٨:٣
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna
And indeed
لَكَ for you laka
for you
لَأَجْرًا surely (is) a reward la-ajran
surely (is) a reward
غَيْرَ without ghayra
without
مَمْنُونٍۢ end mamnūnin
end
٣ (3)
(3)
And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.
٦٨:٤
وَإِنَّكَ And indeed, you wa-innaka
And indeed, you
لَعَلَىٰ surely (are) laʿalā
surely (are)
خُلُقٍ (of) a moral character khuluqin
(of) a moral character
عَظِيمٍۢ great ʿaẓīmin
great
٤ (4)
(4)
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
٦٨:٥
فَسَتُبْصِرُ So you will see fasatub'ṣiru
So you will see
وَيُبْصِرُونَ and they will see wayub'ṣirūna
and they will see
٥ (5)
(5)
So you will see and they will see.
٦٨:٦
بِأَييِّكُمُ Which of you bi-ayyikumu
Which of you
ٱلْمَفْتُونُ (is) the afflicted one l-maftūnu
(is) the afflicted one
٦ (6)
(6)
Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].
٦٨:٧
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
رَبَّكَ your Lord rabbaka
your Lord
هُوَ He huwa
He
أَعْلَمُ (is) most knowing aʿlamu
(is) most knowing
بِمَن of (he) who biman
of (he) who
ضَلَّ has strayed ḍalla
has strayed
عَن from ʿan
from
سَبِيلِهِۦ His way sabīlihi
His way
وَهُوَ and He wahuwa
and He
أَعْلَمُ (is) most knowing aʿlamu
(is) most knowing
بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ of the guided ones bil-muh'tadīna
of the guided ones
٧ (7)
(7)
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
٦٨:٨
فَلَا So (do) not falā
So (do) not
تُطِعِ obey tuṭiʿi
obey
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ the deniers l-mukadhibīna
the deniers
٨ (8)
(8)
Then do not obey the deniers.
٦٨:٩
وَدُّوا۟ They wish waddū
They wish
لَوْ that law
that
تُدْهِنُ you should compromise tud'hinu
you should compromise
فَيُدْهِنُونَ so they would compromise fayud'hinūna
so they would compromise
٩ (9)
(9)
They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
٦٨:١٠
وَلَا And (do) not walā
And (do) not
تُطِعْ obey tuṭiʿ
obey
كُلَّ every kulla
every
حَلَّافٍۢ habitual swearer ḥallāfin
habitual swearer
مَّهِينٍ worthless mahīnin
worthless
١٠ (10)
(10)
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
٦٨:١١
هَمَّازٍۢ Defamer hammāzin
Defamer
مَّشَّآءٍۭ going about mashāin
going about
بِنَمِيمٍۢ with malicious gossip binamīmin
with malicious gossip
١١ (11)
(11)
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
٦٨:١٢
مَّنَّاعٍۢ A preventer mannāʿin
A preventer
لِّلْخَيْرِ of (the) good lil'khayri
of (the) good
مُعْتَدٍ transgressor muʿ'tadin
transgressor
أَثِيمٍ sinful athīmin
sinful
١٢ (12)
(12)
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
٦٨:١٣
عُتُلٍّۭ Cruel ʿutullin
Cruel
بَعْدَ after baʿda
after
ذَٰلِكَ (all) that dhālika
(all) that
زَنِيمٍ utterly useless zanīmin
utterly useless
١٣ (13)
(13)
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
٦٨:١٤
أَن Because an
Because
كَانَ (he) is kāna
(he) is
ذَا a possessor dhā
a possessor
مَالٍۢ (of) wealth mālin
(of) wealth
وَبَنِينَ and children wabanīna
and children
١٤ (14)
(14)
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
٦٨:١٥
إِذَا When idhā
When
تُتْلَىٰ are recited tut'lā
are recited
عَلَيْهِ to him ʿalayhi
to him
ءَايَـٰتُنَا Our Verses āyātunā
Our Verses
قَالَ he says qāla
he says
أَسَـٰطِيرُ Stories asāṭīru
Stories
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
(of) the former (people)
١٥ (15)
(15)
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
٦٨:١٦
سَنَسِمُهُۥ We will brand him sanasimuhu
We will brand him
عَلَى on ʿalā
on
ٱلْخُرْطُومِ the snout l-khur'ṭūmi
the snout
١٦ (16)
(16)
We will brand him upon the snout.
٦٨:١٧
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā
Indeed, We
بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ have tried them balawnāhum
have tried them
كَمَا as kamā
as
بَلَوْنَآ We tried balawnā
We tried
أَصْحَـٰبَ (the) companions aṣḥāba
(the) companions
ٱلْجَنَّةِ (of) the garden l-janati
(of) the garden
إِذْ when idh
when
أَقْسَمُوا۟ they swore aqsamū
they swore
لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا to pluck its fruit layaṣrimunnahā
to pluck its fruit
مُصْبِحِينَ (in the) morning muṣ'biḥīna
(in the) morning
١٧ (17)
(17)
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
٦٨:١٨
وَلَا And not walā
And not
يَسْتَثْنُونَ making exception yastathnūna
making exception
١٨ (18)
(18)
Without making exception.
٦٨:١٩
فَطَافَ So there came faṭāfa
So there came
عَلَيْهَا upon it ʿalayhā
upon it
طَآئِفٌۭ a visitation ṭāifun
a visitation
مِّن from min
from
رَّبِّكَ your Lord rabbika
your Lord
وَهُمْ while they wahum
while they
نَآئِمُونَ were asleep nāimūna
were asleep
١٩ (19)
(19)
So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
٦٨:٢٠
فَأَصْبَحَتْ So it became fa-aṣbaḥat
So it became
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ as if reaped kal-ṣarīmi
as if reaped
٢٠ (20)
(20)
And it became as though reaped.
٦٨:٢١
فَتَنَادَوْا۟ And they called one another fatanādaw
And they called one another
مُصْبِحِينَ (at) morning muṣ'biḥīna
(at) morning
٢١ (21)
(21)
And they called one another at morning,
٦٨:٢٢
أَنِ That ani
That
ٱغْدُوا۟ Go early igh'dū
Go early
عَلَىٰ to ʿalā
to
حَرْثِكُمْ your crop ḥarthikum
your crop
إِن if in
if
كُنتُمْ you would kuntum
you would
صَـٰرِمِينَ pluck (the) fruit ṣārimīna
pluck (the) fruit
٢٢ (22)
(22)
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."
٦٨:٢٣
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ So they went fa-inṭalaqū
So they went
وَهُمْ while they wahum
while they
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ lowered (their) voices yatakhāfatūna
lowered (their) voices
٢٣ (23)
(23)
So they set out, while lowering their voices,
٦٨:٢٤
أَن That an
That
لَّا Not
Not
يَدْخُلَنَّهَا will enter it yadkhulannahā
will enter it
ٱلْيَوْمَ today l-yawma
today
عَلَيْكُم upon you ʿalaykum
upon you
مِّسْكِينٌۭ any poor person mis'kīnun
any poor person
٢٤ (24)
(24)
[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."
٦٨:٢٥
وَغَدَوْا۟ And they went early waghadaw
And they went early
عَلَىٰ with ʿalā
with
حَرْدٍۢ determination ḥardin
determination
قَـٰدِرِينَ able qādirīna
able
٢٥ (25)
(25)
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.
٦٨:٢٦
فَلَمَّا But when falammā
But when
رَأَوْهَا they saw it ra-awhā
they saw it
قَالُوٓا۟ they said qālū
they said
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
لَضَآلُّونَ (are) surely lost laḍāllūna
(are) surely lost
٢٦ (26)
(26)
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;
٦٨:٢٧
بَلْ Nay bal
Nay
نَحْنُ We naḥnu
We
مَحْرُومُونَ (are) deprived maḥrūmūna
(are) deprived
٢٧ (27)
(27)
Rather, we have been deprived."
٦٨:٢٨
قَالَ Said qāla
Said
أَوْسَطُهُمْ (the) most moderate of them awsaṭuhum
(the) most moderate of them
أَلَمْ Did not alam
Did not
أَقُل I tell aqul
I tell
لَّكُمْ you lakum
you
لَوْلَا 'Why not lawlā
'Why not
تُسَبِّحُونَ you glorify (Allah)?' tusabbiḥūna
you glorify (Allah)?'
٢٨ (28)
(28)
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"1
٦٨:٢٩
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be sub'ḥāna
Glory be
رَبِّنَآ (to) our Lord rabbinā
(to) our Lord
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
كُنَّا [we] were kunnā
[we] were
ظَـٰلِمِينَ wrongdoers ẓālimīna
wrongdoers
٢٩ (29)
(29)
They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
٦٨:٣٠
فَأَقْبَلَ Then approached fa-aqbala
Then approached
بَعْضُهُمْ some of them baʿḍuhum
some of them
عَلَىٰ to ʿalā
to
بَعْضٍۢ others baʿḍin
others
يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ blaming each other yatalāwamūna
blaming each other
٣٠ (30)
(30)
Then they approached one another, blaming each other.
٦٨:٣١
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ O woe to us yāwaylanā
O woe to us
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
كُنَّا [we] were kunnā
[we] were
طَـٰغِينَ transgressors ṭāghīna
transgressors
٣١ (31)
(31)
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.
٦٨:٣٢
عَسَىٰ Perhaps ʿasā
Perhaps
رَبُّنَآ our Lord rabbunā
our Lord
أَن [that] an
[that]
يُبْدِلَنَا will substitute for us yub'dilanā
will substitute for us
خَيْرًۭا a better khayran
a better
مِّنْهَآ than it min'hā
than it
إِنَّآ Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
رَبِّنَا our Lord rabbinā
our Lord
رَٰغِبُونَ turn devoutly rāghibūna
turn devoutly
٣٢ (32)
(32)
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."1
٦٨:٣٣
كَذَٰلِكَ Such kadhālika
Such
ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ (is) the punishment l-ʿadhābu
(is) the punishment
وَلَعَذَابُ And surely the punishment walaʿadhābu
And surely the punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati
(of) the Hereafter
أَكْبَرُ ۚ (is) greater akbaru
(is) greater
لَوْ if law
if
كَانُوا۟ they kānū
they
يَعْلَمُونَ know yaʿlamūna
know
٣٣ (33)
(33)
Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
٦٨:٣٤
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَ for the righteous lil'muttaqīna
for the righteous
عِندَ with ʿinda
with
رَبِّهِمْ their Lord rabbihim
their Lord
جَنَّـٰتِ (are) Gardens jannāti
(are) Gardens
ٱلنَّعِيمِ (of) Delight l-naʿīmi
(of) Delight
٣٤ (34)
(34)
Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.
٦٨:٣٥
أَفَنَجْعَلُ Then will We treat afanajʿalu
Then will We treat
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ the Muslims l-mus'limīna
the Muslims
كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ like the criminals kal-muj'rimīna
like the criminals
٣٥ (35)
(35)
Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?
٦٨:٣٦
مَا What
What
لَكُمْ (is) for you lakum
(is) for you
كَيْفَ How kayfa
How
تَحْكُمُونَ (do) you judge taḥkumūna
(do) you judge
٣٦ (36)
(36)
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
٦٨:٣٧
أَمْ Or am
Or
لَكُمْ (is) for you lakum
(is) for you
كِتَـٰبٌۭ a book kitābun
a book
فِيهِ wherein fīhi
wherein
تَدْرُسُونَ you learn tadrusūna
you learn
٣٧ (37)
(37)
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
٦٨:٣٨
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
فِيهِ in it fīhi
in it
لَمَا what lamā
what
تَخَيَّرُونَ you choose takhayyarūna
you choose
٣٨ (38)
(38)
That indeed for you is whatever you choose?
٦٨:٣٩
أَمْ Or am
Or
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
أَيْمَـٰنٌ oaths aymānun
oaths
عَلَيْنَا from us ʿalaynā
from us
بَـٰلِغَةٌ reaching bālighatun
reaching
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
يَوْمِ (the) Day yawmi
(the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
(of) the Resurrection
إِنَّ indeed inna
indeed
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
لَمَا (is) what lamā
(is) what
تَحْكُمُونَ you judge taḥkumūna
you judge
٣٩ (39)
(39)
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
٦٨:٤٠
سَلْهُمْ Ask them salhum
Ask them
أَيُّهُم which of them ayyuhum
which of them
بِذَٰلِكَ for that bidhālika
for that
زَعِيمٌ (is) responsible zaʿīmun
(is) responsible
٤٠ (40)
(40)
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
٦٨:٤١
أَمْ Or am
Or
لَهُمْ (are) for them lahum
(are) for them
شُرَكَآءُ partners shurakāu
partners
فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ Then let them bring falyatū
Then let them bring
بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ their partners bishurakāihim
their partners
إِن if in
if
كَانُوا۟ they are kānū
they are
صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ṣādiqīna
truthful
٤١ (41)
(41)
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.
٦٨:٤٢
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma
(The) Day
يُكْشَفُ will be uncovered yuk'shafu
will be uncovered
عَن from ʿan
from
سَاقٍۢ the shin sāqin
the shin
وَيُدْعَوْنَ and they will be called wayud'ʿawna
and they will be called
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلسُّجُودِ prostrate l-sujūdi
prostrate
فَلَا but not falā
but not
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ they will be able yastaṭīʿūna
they will be able
٤٢ (42)
(42)
The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,
٦٨:٤٣
خَـٰشِعَةً Humbled khāshiʿatan
Humbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ their eyes abṣāruhum
their eyes
تَرْهَقُهُمْ will cover them tarhaquhum
will cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ humiliation dhillatun
humiliation
وَقَدْ And indeed waqad
And indeed
كَانُوا۟ they were kānū
they were
يُدْعَوْنَ called yud'ʿawna
called
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلسُّجُودِ prostrate l-sujūdi
prostrate
وَهُمْ while they wahum
while they
سَـٰلِمُونَ (were) sound sālimūna
(were) sound
٤٣ (43)
(43)
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.
٦٨:٤٤
فَذَرْنِى So leave Me fadharnī
So leave Me
وَمَن and whoever waman
and whoever
يُكَذِّبُ denies yukadhibu
denies
بِهَـٰذَا this bihādhā
this
ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ Statement l-ḥadīthi
Statement
سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم We will progressively lead them sanastadrijuhum
We will progressively lead them
مِّنْ from min
from
حَيْثُ where ḥaythu
where
لَا not
not
يَعْلَمُونَ they know yaʿlamūna
they know
٤٤ (44)
(44)
So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.
٦٨:٤٥
وَأُمْلِى And I will give respite wa-um'lī
And I will give respite
لَهُمْ ۚ to them lahum
to them
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
كَيْدِى My plan kaydī
My plan
مَتِينٌ (is) firm matīnun
(is) firm
٤٥ (45)
(45)
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
٦٨:٤٦
أَمْ Or am
Or
تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ you ask them tasaluhum
you ask them
أَجْرًۭا a payment ajran
a payment
فَهُم so they fahum
so they
مِّن from min
from
مَّغْرَمٍۢ (the) debt maghramin
(the) debt
مُّثْقَلُونَ (are) burdened muth'qalūna
(are) burdened
٤٦ (46)
(46)
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
٦٨:٤٧
أَمْ Or am
Or
عِندَهُمُ (is) with them ʿindahumu
(is) with them
ٱلْغَيْبُ the unseen l-ghaybu
the unseen
فَهُمْ so they fahum
so they
يَكْتُبُونَ write it yaktubūna
write it
٤٧ (47)
(47)
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
٦٨:٤٨
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir
So be patient
لِحُكْمِ for (the) decision liḥuk'mi
for (the) decision
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
وَلَا and (do) not walā
and (do) not
تَكُن be takun
be
كَصَاحِبِ like (the) companion kaṣāḥibi
like (the) companion
ٱلْحُوتِ (of) the fish l-ḥūti
(of) the fish
إِذْ when idh
when
نَادَىٰ he called out nādā
he called out
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
while he
مَكْظُومٌۭ (was) distressed makẓūmun
(was) distressed
٤٨ (48)
(48)
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.
٦٨:٤٩
لَّوْلَآ If not lawlā
If not
أَن that an
that
تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ overtook him tadārakahu
overtook him
نِعْمَةٌۭ a Favor niʿ'matun
a Favor
مِّن from min
from
رَّبِّهِۦ his Lord rabbihi
his Lord
لَنُبِذَ surely he would have been thrown lanubidha
surely he would have been thrown
بِٱلْعَرَآءِ onto (the) naked shore bil-ʿarāi
onto (the) naked shore
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
while he
مَذْمُومٌۭ (was) blamed madhmūmun
(was) blamed
٤٩ (49)
(49)
If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
٦٨:٥٠
فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ But chose him fa-ij'tabāhu
But chose him
رَبُّهُۥ his Lord rabbuhu
his Lord
فَجَعَلَهُۥ and made him fajaʿalahu
and made him
مِنَ of mina
of
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
the righteous
٥٠ (50)
(50)
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
٦٨:٥١
وَإِن And indeed wa-in
And indeed
يَكَادُ would almost yakādu
would almost
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve kafarū
disbelieve
لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ surely make you slip layuz'liqūnaka
surely make you slip
بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ with their look bi-abṣārihim
with their look
لَمَّا when lammā
when
سَمِعُوا۟ they hear samiʿū
they hear
ٱلذِّكْرَ the Message l-dhik'ra
the Message
وَيَقُولُونَ and they say wayaqūlūna
and they say
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu
Indeed, he
لَمَجْنُونٌۭ (is) surely mad lamajnūnun
(is) surely mad
٥١ (51)
(51)
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
٦٨:٥٢
وَمَا And not wamā
And not
هُوَ it (is) huwa
it (is)
إِلَّا but illā
but
ذِكْرٌۭ a Reminder dhik'run
a Reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ to the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
to the worlds
٥٢ (52)
(52)
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
