بسملة

بِسْمِ In (the) name ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

٥٣:١

وَٱلنَّجْمِ By the star إِذَا when هَوَىٰ it goes down ١ (1)

By the star when it descends,

٥٣:٢

مَا Not ضَلَّ has strayed صَاحِبُكُمْ your companion وَمَا and not غَوَىٰ has he erred ٢ (2)

Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

٥٣:٣

وَمَا And not يَنطِقُ he speaks عَنِ from ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ the desire ٣ (3)

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

٥٣:٤

إِنْ Not هُوَ it إِلَّا (is) except وَحْىٌۭ a revelation يُوحَىٰ revealed ٤ (4)

It is not but a revelation revealed,

٥٣:٥

عَلَّمَهُۥ Has taught him شَدِيدُ the (one) mighty ٱلْقُوَىٰ (in) power ٥ (5)

Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -

٥٣:٦

ذُو Possessor of soundness مِرَّةٍۢ Possessor of soundness فَٱسْتَوَىٰ And he rose ٦ (6)

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

٥٣:٧

وَهُوَ While he بِٱلْأُفُقِ (was) in the horizon ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ the highest ٧ (7)

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.

٥٣:٨

ثُمَّ Then دَنَا he approached فَتَدَلَّىٰ and came down ٨ (8)

Then he approached and descended

٥٣:٩

فَكَانَ And was قَابَ (at) a distance قَوْسَيْنِ (of) two bow-(lengths) أَوْ or أَدْنَىٰ nearer ٩ (9)

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

٥٣:١٠

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ So he revealed إِلَىٰ to عَبْدِهِۦ His slave مَآ what أَوْحَىٰ he revealed ١٠ (10)

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].

٥٣:١١

مَا Not كَذَبَ lied ٱلْفُؤَادُ the heart مَا what رَأَىٰٓ it saw ١١ (11)

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.

٥٣:١٢

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ Then will you dispute with him عَلَىٰ about مَا what يَرَىٰ he saw ١٢ (12)

So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

٥٣:١٣

وَلَقَدْ And certainly رَءَاهُ he saw him نَزْلَةً (in) descent أُخْرَىٰ another ١٣ (13)

And he certainly saw him in another descent

٥٣:١٤

عِندَ Near سِدْرَةِ (the) Lote Tree ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ (of) the utmost boundary ١٤ (14)

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -

٥٣:١٥

عِندَهَا Near it جَنَّةُ (is the) Garden ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ (of) Abode ١٥ (15)

Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -

٥٣:١٦

إِذْ When يَغْشَى covered ٱلسِّدْرَةَ the Lote Tree مَا what يَغْشَىٰ covers ١٦ (16)

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].

٥٣:١٧

مَا Not زَاغَ swerved ٱلْبَصَرُ the sight وَمَا and not طَغَىٰ it transgressed ١٧ (17)

The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].

٥٣:١٨

لَقَدْ Certainly رَأَىٰ he saw مِنْ of ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Signs رَبِّهِ (of) his Lord ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ the Greatest ١٨ (18)

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.

٥٣:١٩

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ So have you seen ٱللَّـٰتَ the Lat وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ and the Uzza ١٩ (19)

So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?

٥٣:٢٠

وَمَنَوٰةَ And Manat ٱلثَّالِثَةَ the third ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ the other ٢٠ (20)

And Manāt, the third - the other one?

٥٣:٢١

أَلَكُمُ Is for you ٱلذَّكَرُ the male وَلَهُ and for Him ٱلْأُنثَىٰ the female ٢١ (21)

Is the male for you and for Him the female?

٥٣:٢٢

تِلْكَ This إِذًۭا then قِسْمَةٌۭ (is) a division ضِيزَىٰٓ unfair ٢٢ (22)

That, then, is an unjust division.

٥٣:٢٣

إِنْ Not هِىَ they إِلَّآ (are) except أَسْمَآءٌۭ names سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ you have named them أَنتُمْ you وَءَابَآؤُكُم and your forefathers مَّآ not أَنزَلَ has Allah sent down ٱللَّهُ has Allah sent down بِهَا for it مِن any سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ authority إِن Not يَتَّبِعُونَ they follow إِلَّا except ٱلظَّنَّ assumption وَمَا and what تَهْوَى desire ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ the(ir) souls وَلَقَدْ And certainly جَآءَهُم has come to them مِّن from رَّبِّهِمُ their Lord ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ the guidance ٢٣ (23)

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

٥٣:٢٤

أَمْ Or لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ (is) for man مَا what تَمَنَّىٰ he wishes ٢٤ (24)

Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

٥٣:٢٥

فَلِلَّهِ But for Allah ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ (is) the last وَٱلْأُولَىٰ and the first ٢٥ (25)

Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

٥٣:٢٦

۞ وَكَم And how many مِّن of مَّلَكٍۢ (the) Angels فِى in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens لَا not تُغْنِى will avail شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ their intercession شَيْـًٔا anything إِلَّا except مِنۢ after بَعْدِ after أَن [that] يَأْذَنَ Allah has given permission ٱللَّهُ Allah has given permission لِمَن for whom يَشَآءُ He wills وَيَرْضَىٰٓ and approves ٢٦ (26)

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.

٥٣:٢٧

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who لَا (do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ believe بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ in the Hereafter لَيُسَمُّونَ surely they name ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ the Angels تَسْمِيَةَ name(s) ٱلْأُنثَىٰ (of) female ٢٧ (27)

Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,

٥٣:٢٨

وَمَا And not لَهُم for them بِهِۦ about it مِنْ any عِلْمٍ ۖ knowledge إِن Not يَتَّبِعُونَ they follow إِلَّا but ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ assumption وَإِنَّ And indeed ٱلظَّنَّ the assumption لَا (does) not يُغْنِى avail مِنَ against ٱلْحَقِّ the truth شَيْـًۭٔا anything ٢٨ (28)

And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.

٥٣:٢٩

فَأَعْرِضْ So turn away عَن from مَّن (him) who تَوَلَّىٰ turns away عَن from ذِكْرِنَا Our Reminder وَلَمْ and not يُرِدْ he desires إِلَّا except ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ the life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world ٢٩ (29)

So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.

٥٣:٣٠

ذَٰلِكَ That مَبْلَغُهُم (is) their sum مِّنَ of ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ knowledge إِنَّ Indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord هُوَ (is) He (Who) أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَن (he) who ضَلَّ strays عَن from سَبِيلِهِۦ His Path وَهُوَ and He أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَنِ (he) who ٱهْتَدَىٰ is guided ٣٠ (30)

That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.

٥٣:٣١

وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah مَا (is) whatever فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَمَا and whatever فِى (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth لِيَجْزِىَ that He may recompense ٱلَّذِينَ those who أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ do evil بِمَا with what عَمِلُوا۟ they have done وَيَجْزِىَ and recompense ٱلَّذِينَ those who أَحْسَنُوا۟ do good بِٱلْحُسْنَى with the best ٣١ (31)

And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -

٥٣:٣٢

ٱلَّذِينَ Those who يَجْتَنِبُونَ avoid كَبَـٰٓئِرَ great ٱلْإِثْمِ sins وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ and the immoralities إِلَّا except ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ the small faults إِنَّ indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord وَٰسِعُ (is) vast ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ (in) forgiveness هُوَ He أَعْلَمُ (is) most knowing about you بِكُمْ (is) most knowing about you إِذْ when أَنشَأَكُم He produced you مِّنَ from ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth وَإِذْ and when أَنتُمْ you (were) أَجِنَّةٌۭ fetuses فِى in بُطُونِ (the) wombs أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ (of) your mothers فَلَا So (do) not تُزَكُّوٓا۟ ascribe purity أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ (to) yourselves هُوَ He أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَنِ (he) who ٱتَّقَىٰٓ fears ٣٢ (32)

Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.

٥٣:٣٣

أَفَرَءَيْتَ Did you see ٱلَّذِى the one who تَوَلَّىٰ turned away ٣٣ (33)

Have you seen the one who turned away

٥٣:٣٤

وَأَعْطَىٰ And gave قَلِيلًۭا a little وَأَكْدَىٰٓ and withheld ٣٤ (34)

And gave a little and [then] refrained?

٥٣:٣٥

أَعِندَهُۥ Is with him عِلْمُ (the) knowledge ٱلْغَيْبِ (of) the unseen فَهُوَ so he يَرَىٰٓ sees ٣٥ (35)

Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?

٥٣:٣٦

أَمْ Or لَمْ not يُنَبَّأْ he was informed بِمَا with what فِى (was) in صُحُفِ (the) Scriptures مُوسَىٰ (of) Musa ٣٦ (36)

Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses

٥٣:٣٧

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ And Ibrahim ٱلَّذِى who وَفَّىٰٓ fulfilled ٣٧ (37)

And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -

٥٣:٣٨

أَلَّا That not تَزِرُ will bear وَازِرَةٌۭ a bearer of burdens وِزْرَ (the) burden أُخْرَىٰ (of) another ٣٨ (38)

That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another

٥٣:٣٩

وَأَن And that لَّيْسَ is not لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ for man إِلَّا except مَا what سَعَىٰ he strives (for) ٣٩ (39)

And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives

٥٣:٤٠

وَأَنَّ And that سَعْيَهُۥ his striving سَوْفَ will soon يُرَىٰ be seen ٤٠ (40)

And that his effort is going to be seen -

٥٣:٤١

ثُمَّ Then يُجْزَىٰهُ he will be recompensed for it ٱلْجَزَآءَ the recompense ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ the fullest ٤١ (41)

Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense -

٥٣:٤٢

وَأَنَّ And that إِلَىٰ to رَبِّكَ your Lord ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ (is) the final goal ٤٢ (42)

And that to your Lord is the finality

٥٣:٤٣

وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَضْحَكَ makes (one) laugh وَأَبْكَىٰ and makes (one) weep ٤٣ (43)

And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep

٥٣:٤٤

وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَمَاتَ causes death وَأَحْيَا and gives life ٤٤ (44)

And that it is He who causes death and gives life

٥٣:٤٥

وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He خَلَقَ created ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ the pairs ٱلذَّكَرَ the male وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ and the female ٤٥ (45)

And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -

٥٣:٤٦

مِن From نُّطْفَةٍ a semen-drop إِذَا when تُمْنَىٰ it is emitted ٤٦ (46)

From a sperm-drop when it is emitted

٥٣:٤٧

وَأَنَّ And that عَلَيْهِ upon Him ٱلنَّشْأَةَ (is) the bringing forth ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ another ٤٧ (47)

And that [incumbent] upon Him is the other [i.e., next] creation.

٥٣:٤٨

وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَغْنَىٰ enriches وَأَقْنَىٰ and suffices ٤٨ (48)

And that it is He who enriches and suffices

٥٣:٤٩

وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] رَبُّ (is the) Lord ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ (of) Sirius ٤٩ (49)

And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius.

٥٣:٥٠

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ And that He أَهْلَكَ destroyed عَادًا Aad ٱلْأُولَىٰ the first ٥٠ (50)

And that He destroyed the first [people of] ʿAad.

٥٣:٥١

وَثَمُودَا۟ And Thamud فَمَآ so not أَبْقَىٰ He spared ٥١ (51)

And Thamūd - and He did not spare [them] -

٥٣:٥٢

وَقَوْمَ And (the) people نُوحٍۢ (of) Nuh مِّن before قَبْلُ ۖ before إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they كَانُوا۟ they were هُمْ they were أَظْلَمَ more unjust وَأَطْغَىٰ and more rebellious ٥٢ (52)

And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.

٥٣:٥٣

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ And the overturned cities أَهْوَىٰ He overthrew ٥٣ (53)

And the overturned towns He hurled down.

٥٣:٥٤

فَغَشَّىٰهَا So covered them مَا what غَشَّىٰ covered ٥٤ (54)

And covered them by that which He covered.

٥٣:٥٥

فَبِأَىِّ Then which (of) ءَالَآءِ the Favors رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord تَتَمَارَىٰ will you doubt ٥٥ (55)

Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?

٥٣:٥٦

هَـٰذَا This نَذِيرٌۭ (is) a warner مِّنَ from ٱلنُّذُرِ the warners ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ the former ٥٦ (56)

This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.

٥٣:٥٧

أَزِفَتِ Has approached ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ the Approaching Day ٥٧ (57)

The Approaching Day has approached.

٥٣:٥٨

لَيْسَ Not is لَهَا for it مِن besides دُونِ besides ٱللَّهِ Allah كَاشِفَةٌ any remover ٥٨ (58)

Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.

٥٣:٥٩

أَفَمِنْ Then of هَـٰذَا this ٱلْحَدِيثِ statement تَعْجَبُونَ you wonder ٥٩ (59)

Then at this statement do you wonder?

٥٣:٦٠

وَتَضْحَكُونَ And you laugh وَلَا and (do) not تَبْكُونَ weep ٦٠ (60)

And you laugh and do not weep

٥٣:٦١

وَأَنتُمْ While you سَـٰمِدُونَ amuse (yourselves) ٦١ (61)

While you are proudly sporting?

٥٣:٦٢

فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ So prostrate لِلَّهِ to Allah وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩ and worship (Him) ٦٢ (62)

So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].
