بسملة

بِسْمِIn (the) nameٱللَّهِ(of) Allahٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

١٨:١

ٱلْحَمْدُAll Praiseلِلَّهِ(is) for Allahٱلَّذِىٓthe One Whoأَنزَلَ(has) revealedعَلَىٰtoعَبْدِهِHis slaveٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe Bookوَلَمْand notيَجْعَل(has) madeلَّهُۥin itعِوَجَاۜany crookedness١

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, who has sent down upon His Servant [Muḥammad (ﷺ)] the Book and has not made therein any deviance.

١٨:٢

قَيِّمًۭاStraightلِّيُنذِرَto warnبَأْسًۭا(of) a punishmentشَدِيدًۭاsevereمِّنfromلَّدُنْهُnear Himوَيُبَشِّرَand give glad tidingsٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ(to) the believersٱلَّذِينَthose whoيَعْمَلُونَdoٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deedsأَنَّthatلَهُمْfor themأَجْرًا(is) a good rewardحَسَنًۭا(is) a good reward٢

[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward [i.e., Paradise].

١٨:٣

مَّـٰكِثِينَ(They will) abideفِيهِin itأَبَدًۭاforever٣

In which they will remain forever

١٨:٤

وَيُنذِرَAnd to warnٱلَّذِينَthose whoقَالُوا۟sayٱتَّخَذَAllah has takenٱللَّهُAllah has takenوَلَدًۭاa son٤

And to warn those who say, "Allāh has taken a son".

١٨:٥

مَّاNotلَهُمthey haveبِهِۦabout itمِنْanyعِلْمٍۢknowledgeوَلَاand notلِـَٔابَآئِهِمْ ۚtheir forefathersكَبُرَتْGrave (is)كَلِمَةًۭthe wordتَخْرُجُ(that) comes outمِنْofأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۚtheir mouthsإِنNotيَقُولُونَthey sayإِلَّاexceptكَذِبًۭاa lie٥

They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.

١٨:٦

فَلَعَلَّكَThen perhaps you would (be)بَـٰخِعٌۭthe one who killsنَّفْسَكَyourselfعَلَىٰٓoverءَاثَـٰرِهِمْtheir footstepsإِنifلَّمْnotيُؤْمِنُوا۟they believeبِهَـٰذَاin thisٱلْحَدِيثِ[the] narrationأَسَفًا(in) grief٦

Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muḥammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.

١٨:٧

إِنَّاIndeed, WeجَعَلْنَاWe have madeمَاwhatعَلَى(is) onٱلْأَرْضِthe earthزِينَةًۭadornmentلَّهَاfor itلِنَبْلُوَهُمْthat We may test [them]أَيُّهُمْwhich of themأَحْسَنُ(is) bestعَمَلًۭا(in) deed٧

Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.

١٨:٨

وَإِنَّاAnd indeed, Weلَجَـٰعِلُونَ(will) surely makeمَاwhatعَلَيْهَا(is) on itصَعِيدًۭاsoilجُرُزًاbarren٨

And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.

١٨:٩

أَمْOrحَسِبْتَhave you thoughtأَنَّthatأَصْحَـٰبَ(the) companionsٱلْكَهْفِ(of) the caveوَٱلرَّقِيمِand the inscriptionكَانُوا۟wereمِنْamongءَايَـٰتِنَاOur Signsعَجَبًاa wonder٩

Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?

١٨:١٠

إِذْWhenأَوَىretreatedٱلْفِتْيَةُthe youthsإِلَىtoٱلْكَهْفِthe caveفَقَالُوا۟and they saidرَبَّنَآOur LordءَاتِنَاGrant usمِنfromلَّدُنكَYourselfرَحْمَةًۭMercyوَهَيِّئْand facilitateلَنَاfor usمِنْ[from]أَمْرِنَاour affairرَشَدًۭا(in the) right way١٠

[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."

١٨:١١

فَضَرَبْنَاSo We castعَلَىٰٓoverءَاذَانِهِمْtheir earsفِىinٱلْكَهْفِthe caveسِنِينَyears عَدَدًۭاa number١١

So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

١٨:١٢

ثُمَّThenبَعَثْنَـٰهُمْWe raised them upلِنَعْلَمَthat We make evidentأَىُّwhichٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ(of) the two partiesأَحْصَىٰbest calculatedلِمَاfor whatلَبِثُوٓا۟(they had) remainedأَمَدًۭا(in) time١٢

Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.

١٨:١٣

نَّحْنُWeنَقُصُّnarrateعَلَيْكَto youنَبَأَهُمtheir storyبِٱلْحَقِّ ۚin truthإِنَّهُمْIndeed, they (were)فِتْيَةٌyouthsءَامَنُوا۟who believedبِرَبِّهِمْin their Lordوَزِدْنَـٰهُمْand We increased themهُدًۭى(in) guidance١٣

It is We who relate to you, [O Muḥammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

١٨:١٤

وَرَبَطْنَاAnd We made firmعَلَىٰ[on]قُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsإِذْwhenقَامُوا۟they stood upفَقَالُوا۟and saidرَبُّنَاOur Lordرَبُّ(is) the Lordٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthلَنNeverنَّدْعُوَا۟we will invokeمِنbesides Himدُونِهِۦٓbesides Himإِلَـٰهًۭا ۖany godلَّقَدْCertainlyقُلْنَآwe would have saidإِذًۭاthenشَطَطًاan enormity١٤

And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.

١٨:١٥

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِTheseقَوْمُنَاour peopleٱتَّخَذُوا۟have takenمِنbesides Himدُونِهِۦٓbesides Himءَالِهَةًۭ ۖgodsلَّوْلَاWhy notيَأْتُونَthey comeعَلَيْهِمto themبِسُلْطَـٰنٍۭwith an authorityبَيِّنٍۢ ۖclearفَمَنْAnd whoأَظْلَمُ(is) more wrongمِمَّنِthan (one) whoٱفْتَرَىٰinventsعَلَىagainstٱللَّهِAllahكَذِبًۭاa lie١٥

These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for [worship of] them a clear evidence? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allāh a lie?"

١٨:١٦

وَإِذِAnd whenٱعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْyou withdraw from themوَمَاand whatيَعْبُدُونَthey worshipإِلَّاexceptٱللَّهَAllahفَأْوُۥٓا۟then retreatإِلَىtoٱلْكَهْفِthe caveيَنشُرْWill spreadلَكُمْfor youرَبُّكُمyour LordمِّنofرَّحْمَتِهِۦHis Mercyوَيُهَيِّئْand will facilitateلَكُمfor youمِّنْ[from]أَمْرِكُمyour affairمِّرْفَقًۭا(in) ease١٦

[The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allāh, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility."

١٨:١٧

۞ وَتَرَىAnd you (might) have seenٱلشَّمْسَthe sunإِذَاwhenطَلَعَتit roseتَّزَٰوَرُinclining awayعَنfromكَهْفِهِمْtheir caveذَاتَtoٱلْيَمِينِthe rightوَإِذَاand whenغَرَبَتit setتَّقْرِضُهُمْpassing away from themذَاتَtoٱلشِّمَالِthe leftوَهُمْwhile theyفِى(lay) inفَجْوَةٍۢthe open spaceمِّنْهُ ۚthereofذَٰلِكَThatمِنْ(was) fromءَايَـٰتِ(the) Signsٱللَّهِ ۗ(of) AllahمَنWhoeverيَهْدِAllah guidesٱللَّهُAllah guidesفَهُوَand heٱلْمُهْتَدِ ۖ(is) the guided oneوَمَنand whoeverيُضْلِلْHe lets go astrayفَلَنthen neverتَجِدَyou will findلَهُۥfor himوَلِيًّۭاa protectorمُّرْشِدًۭاa guide١٧

And [had you been present], you would see the sun when it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and when it set, passing away from them on the left, while they were [lying] within an open space thereof. That was from the signs of Allāh. He whom Allāh guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He sends astray - never will you find for him a protecting guide.

١٨:١٨

وَتَحْسَبُهُمْAnd you (would) think themأَيْقَاظًۭاawakeوَهُمْwhile theyرُقُودٌۭ ۚ(were) asleepوَنُقَلِّبُهُمْAnd We turned themذَاتَtoٱلْيَمِينِthe rightوَذَاتَand toٱلشِّمَالِ ۖthe leftوَكَلْبُهُمwhile their dogبَـٰسِطٌۭstretchedذِرَاعَيْهِhis two forelegsبِٱلْوَصِيدِ ۚat the entranceلَوِIfٱطَّلَعْتَyou had lookedعَلَيْهِمْat themلَوَلَّيْتَyou (would) have surely turned backمِنْهُمْfrom themفِرَارًۭا(in) flightوَلَمُلِئْتَand surely you would have been filledمِنْهُمْby themرُعْبًۭا(with) terror١٨

And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.

١٨:١٩

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd similarlyبَعَثْنَـٰهُمْWe raised themلِيَتَسَآءَلُوا۟that they might questionبَيْنَهُمْ ۚamong themقَالَSaidقَآئِلٌۭa speakerمِّنْهُمْamong themكَمْHow longلَبِثْتُمْ ۖhave you remainedقَالُوا۟They saidلَبِثْنَاWe have remainedيَوْمًاa dayأَوْorبَعْضَa partيَوْمٍۢ ۚ(of) a dayقَالُوا۟They saidرَبُّكُمْYour Lordأَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَاhow longلَبِثْتُمْyou have remainedفَٱبْعَثُوٓا۟So sendأَحَدَكُمone of youبِوَرِقِكُمْwith this silver coin of yoursهَـٰذِهِۦٓwith this silver coin of yoursإِلَىtoٱلْمَدِينَةِthe cityفَلْيَنظُرْand let him seeأَيُّهَآwhich isأَزْكَىٰthe purestطَعَامًۭاfoodفَلْيَأْتِكُمand let him bring to youبِرِزْقٍۢprovisionمِّنْهُfrom itوَلْيَتَلَطَّفْand let him be cautiousوَلَاAnd let not be awareيُشْعِرَنَّAnd let not be awareبِكُمْabout youأَحَدًاanyone١٩

And similarly, We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, "How long have you remained [here]?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you.

١٨:٢٠

إِنَّهُمْIndeed, [they]إِنifيَظْهَرُوا۟they come to knowعَلَيْكُمْabout youيَرْجُمُوكُمْthey will stone youأَوْorيُعِيدُوكُمْreturn youفِىtoمِلَّتِهِمْtheir religionوَلَنAnd neverتُفْلِحُوٓا۟will you succeedإِذًاthen أَبَدًۭاever٢٠

Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then - ever."

١٨:٢١

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd similarlyأَعْثَرْنَاWe made knownعَلَيْهِمْabout themلِيَعْلَمُوٓا۟that they might knowأَنَّthatوَعْدَ(the) Promiseٱللَّهِ(of) Allahحَقٌّۭ(is) trueوَأَنَّand thatٱلسَّاعَةَ(about) the Hourلَا(there is) noرَيْبَdoubtفِيهَآin itإِذْWhenيَتَنَـٰزَعُونَthey disputedبَيْنَهُمْamong themselvesأَمْرَهُمْ ۖabout their affairفَقَالُوا۟and they saidٱبْنُوا۟Constructعَلَيْهِمover themبُنْيَـٰنًۭا ۖa structureرَّبُّهُمْTheir Lordأَعْلَمُknows bestبِهِمْ ۚabout themقَالَSaidٱلَّذِينَthose whoغَلَبُوا۟prevailedعَلَىٰٓinأَمْرِهِمْtheir matterلَنَتَّخِذَنَّSurely we will takeعَلَيْهِمover themمَّسْجِدًۭاa place of worship٢١

And similarly, We caused them to be found that they [who found them] would know that the promise of Allāh is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. [That was] when they disputed among themselves about their affair and [then] said, "Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them." Said those who prevailed in the matter, "We will surely take [for ourselves] over them a masjid."2

١٨:٢٢

سَيَقُولُونَThey sayثَلَـٰثَةٌۭ(they were) threeرَّابِعُهُمْthe forth of themكَلْبُهُمْtheir dogوَيَقُولُونَand they sayخَمْسَةٌۭ(they were) fiveسَادِسُهُمْthe sixth of themكَلْبُهُمْtheir dog رَجْمًۢاguessingبِٱلْغَيْبِ ۖabout the unseenوَيَقُولُونَand they sayسَبْعَةٌۭ(they were) sevenوَثَامِنُهُمْand the eight of themكَلْبُهُمْ ۚtheir dogقُلSayرَّبِّىٓMy Lordأَعْلَمُknows bestبِعِدَّتِهِمtheir numberمَّاNoneيَعْلَمُهُمْknows themإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلٌۭ ۗa fewفَلَاSo (do) notتُمَارِargueفِيهِمْabout themإِلَّاexceptمِرَآءًۭ(with) an argumentظَـٰهِرًۭاobviousوَلَاand (do) notتَسْتَفْتِinquireفِيهِمabout themمِّنْهُمْamong themأَحَدًۭا(from) anyone٢٢

They [i.e., people] will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone."

١٨:٢٣

وَلَاAnd (do) notتَقُولَنَّsayلِشَا۟ىْءٍof anythingإِنِّىIndeed, Iفَاعِلٌۭwill doذَٰلِكَthatغَدًاtomorrow٢٣

And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,"

١٨:٢٤

إِلَّآExceptأَنIfيَشَآءَAllah willsٱللَّهُ ۚAllah willsوَٱذْكُرAnd rememberرَّبَّكَyour Lordإِذَاwhenنَسِيتَyou forgetوَقُلْand sayعَسَىٰٓPerhapsأَن[that]يَهْدِيَنِwill guide meرَبِّىmy Lordلِأَقْرَبَto a nearer (way)مِنْthanهَـٰذَاthisرَشَدًۭاright way٢٤

Except [when adding], "If Allāh wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct."

١٨:٢٥

وَلَبِثُوا۟And they remainedفِىinكَهْفِهِمْtheir caveثَلَـٰثَ(for) threeمِا۟ئَةٍۢhundredسِنِينَyearsوَٱزْدَادُوا۟and addتِسْعًۭاnine٢٥

And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.

١٨:٢٦

قُلِSayٱللَّهُAllahأَعْلَمُknows bestبِمَاabout what (period)لَبِثُوا۟ ۖthey remainedلَهُۥFor Himغَيْبُ(is the) unseenٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖand the earthأَبْصِرْHow clearly He seesبِهِۦ[of it]وَأَسْمِعْ ۚAnd how clearly He hearsمَاNotلَهُمfor themمِّنbesides Himدُونِهِۦbesides Himمِنanyوَلِىٍّۢprotectorوَلَاand notيُشْرِكُHe sharesفِى[in]حُكْمِهِۦٓHis Commandsأَحَدًۭا(with) anyone٢٦

Say, "Allāh is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone."

١٨:٢٧

وَٱتْلُAnd reciteمَآwhatأُوحِىَhas been revealedإِلَيْكَto youمِنofكِتَابِthe Bookرَبِّكَ ۖ(of) your LordلَاNoneمُبَدِّلَcan changeلِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦHis Wordsوَلَنand neverتَجِدَyou will findمِنbesides Himدُونِهِۦbesides Himمُلْتَحَدًۭاa refuge٢٧

And recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge.

١٨:٢٨

وَٱصْبِرْAnd be patientنَفْسَكَyourselfمَعَwithٱلَّذِينَthose whoيَدْعُونَcallرَبَّهُمtheir Lordبِٱلْغَدَوٰةِin the morningوَٱلْعَشِىِّand the eveningيُرِيدُونَdesiringوَجْهَهُۥ ۖHis FaceوَلَاAnd (let) notتَعْدُpass beyondعَيْنَاكَyour eyesعَنْهُمْover themتُرِيدُdesiringزِينَةَadornmentٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifeٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ(of) the worldوَلَاand (do) notتُطِعْobeyمَنْwhomأَغْفَلْنَاWe have made heedlessقَلْبَهُۥhis heartعَنofذِكْرِنَاOur remembranceوَٱتَّبَعَand followsهَوَىٰهُhis desiresوَكَانَand isأَمْرُهُۥhis affairفُرُطًۭا(in) excess٢٨

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His face [i.e., acceptance]. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.

١٨:٢٩

وَقُلِAnd sayٱلْحَقُّThe truthمِن(is) fromرَّبِّكُمْ ۖyour Lordفَمَنso whoeverشَآءَwills فَلْيُؤْمِنlet him believeوَمَنand whoeverشَآءَwills فَلْيَكْفُرْ ۚlet him disbelieveإِنَّآIndeed, Weأَعْتَدْنَاhave preparedلِلظَّـٰلِمِينَfor the wrongdoersنَارًاa Fireأَحَاطَwill surroundبِهِمْthemسُرَادِقُهَا ۚits wallsوَإِنAnd ifيَسْتَغِيثُوا۟they call for reliefيُغَاثُوا۟they will be relievedبِمَآءٍۢwith waterكَٱلْمُهْلِlike molten brassيَشْوِى(which) scaldsٱلْوُجُوهَ ۚthe facesبِئْسَWretchedٱلشَّرَابُ(is) the drinkوَسَآءَتْand evilمُرْتَفَقًا(is) the resting place٢٩

And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place.

١٨:٣٠

إِنَّIndeedٱلَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُوا۟believedوَعَمِلُوا۟and didٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِthe good deedsإِنَّاindeed, Weلَاwill not let go wasteنُضِيعُwill not let go wasteأَجْرَ(the) rewardمَنْ(of one) whoأَحْسَنَdoes goodعَمَلًاdeeds٣٠

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.

١٨:٣١

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThoseلَهُمْfor themجَنَّـٰتُ(are) Gardensعَدْنٍۢof Edenتَجْرِىflowsمِنfromتَحْتِهِمُunderneath themٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُthe riversيُحَلَّوْنَThey will be adornedفِيهَاthereinمِنْ[of] (with)أَسَاوِرَbraceletsمِنofذَهَبٍۢgoldوَيَلْبَسُونَand will wearثِيَابًاgarmentsخُضْرًۭاgreenمِّنofسُندُسٍۢfine silkوَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢand heavy brocadeمُّتَّكِـِٔينَrecliningفِيهَاthereinعَلَىonٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۚadorned couchesنِعْمَExcellentٱلثَّوَابُ(is) the rewardوَحَسُنَتْand goodمُرْتَفَقًۭا(is) the resting place٣١

Those will have gardens of perpetual residence; beneath them rivers will flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place.

١٨:٣٢

۞ وَٱضْرِبْAnd set forthلَهُمto themمَّثَلًۭاthe exampleرَّجُلَيْنِof two men:جَعَلْنَاWe providedلِأَحَدِهِمَاfor one of themجَنَّتَيْنِtwo gardensمِنْofأَعْنَـٰبٍۢgrapesوَحَفَفْنَـٰهُمَاand We bordered themبِنَخْلٍۢwith date-palmsوَجَعَلْنَاand We placedبَيْنَهُمَاbetween both of themزَرْعًۭاcrops٣٢

And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.

١٨:٣٣

كِلْتَاEachٱلْجَنَّتَيْنِ(of) the two gardensءَاتَتْbrought forthأُكُلَهَاits produceوَلَمْand notتَظْلِمdid wrongمِّنْهُof itشَيْـًۭٔا ۚanythingوَفَجَّرْنَاAnd We caused to gush forthخِلَـٰلَهُمَاwithin themنَهَرًۭاa river٣٣

Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river.

١٨:٣٤

وَكَانَAnd wasلَهُۥfor himثَمَرٌۭfruitفَقَالَso he saidلِصَـٰحِبِهِۦto his companionوَهُوَwhile heيُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ(was) talking with himأَنَا۠I amأَكْثَرُgreaterمِنكَthan youمَالًۭا(in) wealthوَأَعَزُّand strongerنَفَرًۭا(in) men٣٤

And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men."

١٨:٣٥

وَدَخَلَAnd he enteredجَنَّتَهُۥhis gardenوَهُوَwhile heظَالِمٌۭ(was) unjustلِّنَفْسِهِۦto himselfقَالَHe saidمَآNotأَظُنُّI thinkأَنthatتَبِيدَwill perishهَـٰذِهِۦٓthisأَبَدًۭاever٣٥

And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, "I do not think that this will perish - ever.

١٨:٣٦

وَمَآAnd notأَظُنُّI thinkٱلسَّاعَةَthe Hourقَآئِمَةًۭwill occurوَلَئِنAnd ifرُّدِدتُّI am brought backإِلَىٰtoرَبِّىmy LordلَأَجِدَنَّI will surely findخَيْرًۭاbetterمِّنْهَاthan thisمُنقَلَبًۭا(as) a return٣٦

And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return."

١٨:٣٧

قَالَSaidلَهُۥto himصَاحِبُهُۥhis companionوَهُوَwhile heيُحَاوِرُهُۥٓwas talking to himأَكَفَرْتَDo you disbelieveبِٱلَّذِىin One Whoخَلَقَكَcreated youمِنfromتُرَابٍۢdustثُمَّthenمِنfromنُّطْفَةٍۢa minute quantity of semenثُمَّthenسَوَّىٰكَfashioned youرَجُلًۭا(into) a man٣٧

His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, "Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man?

١٨:٣٨

لَّـٰكِنَّا۠But as for meهُوَHeٱللَّهُ(is) Allahرَبِّىmy Lordوَلَآand notأُشْرِكُI associateبِرَبِّىٓwith my Lordأَحَدًۭاanyone٣٨

But as for me, He is Allāh, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.

١٨:٣٩

وَلَوْلَآAnd why (did you) notإِذْwhenدَخَلْتَyou enteredجَنَّتَكَyour gardenقُلْتَsayمَاWhatشَآءَwillsٱللَّهُAllahلَا(there is) noقُوَّةَpowerإِلَّاexceptبِٱللَّهِ ۚwith AllahإِنIfتَرَنِyou see meأَنَا۠(me)أَقَلَّlesserمِنكَthan youمَالًۭا(in) wealthوَوَلَدًۭاand children٣٩

And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allāh willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allāh'? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,

١٨:٤٠

فَعَسَىٰIt may beرَبِّىٓthat my Lordأَنthat my Lordيُؤْتِيَنِwill give meخَيْرًۭاbetterمِّنthanجَنَّتِكَyour gardenوَيُرْسِلَand will sendعَلَيْهَاupon itحُسْبَانًۭاa calamityمِّنَfromٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyفَتُصْبِحَthen it will becomeصَعِيدًۭاgroundزَلَقًاslippery٤٠

It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a [disastrous] penalty from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,

١٨:٤١

أَوْOrيُصْبِحَwill becomeمَآؤُهَاits waterغَوْرًۭاsunkenفَلَنso neverتَسْتَطِيعَyou will be ableلَهُۥto find itطَلَبًۭاto find it٤١

Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."

١٨:٤٢

وَأُحِيطَAnd were surroundedبِثَمَرِهِۦhis fruitsفَأَصْبَحَso he beganيُقَلِّبُtwistingكَفَّيْهِhis handsعَلَىٰoverمَآwhatأَنفَقَhe (had) spentفِيهَاon itوَهِىَwhile it (had)خَاوِيَةٌcollapsedعَلَىٰonعُرُوشِهَاits trellisesوَيَقُولُand he saidيَـٰلَيْتَنِىOh! I wishلَمْI had not associatedأُشْرِكْI had not associatedبِرَبِّىٓwith my Lordأَحَدًۭاanyone٤٢

And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, "Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone."1

١٨:٤٣

وَلَمْAnd notتَكُنwasلَّهُۥfor himفِئَةٌۭa groupيَنصُرُونَهُۥ(to) help himمِنother thanدُونِother thanٱللَّهِAllahوَمَاand notكَانَwasمُنتَصِرًا(he) supported٤٣

And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allāh, nor could he defend himself.

١٨:٤٤

هُنَالِكَThereٱلْوَلَـٰيَةُthe protectionلِلَّهِ(is) from Allahٱلْحَقِّ ۚthe TrueهُوَHeخَيْرٌۭ(is the) bestثَوَابًۭا(to) rewardوَخَيْرٌand (the) bestعُقْبًۭا(for) the final end٤٤

There the authority is [completely] for Allāh, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.

١٨:٤٥

وَٱضْرِبْAnd presentلَهُمto themمَّثَلَthe exampleٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifeٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldكَمَآءٍlike waterأَنزَلْنَـٰهُwhich We send downمِنَfromٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyفَٱخْتَلَطَthen minglesبِهِۦwith itنَبَاتُ(the) vegetationٱلْأَرْضِ(of) the earthفَأَصْبَحَthen becomesهَشِيمًۭاdry stalksتَذْرُوهُit (is) scatteredٱلرِّيَـٰحُ ۗ(by) the windsوَكَانَAnd AllahٱللَّهُAnd Allahعَلَىٰoverكُلِّeveryشَىْءٍۢthingمُّقْتَدِرًا(is) All Able٤٥

And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allāh is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

١٨:٤٦

ٱلْمَالُThe wealthوَٱلْبَنُونَand childrenزِينَةُ(are) adornmentٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifeٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ(of) the worldوَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُBut the enduringٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُgood deedsخَيْرٌ(are) betterعِندَnearرَبِّكَyour Lordثَوَابًۭا(for) rewardوَخَيْرٌand betterأَمَلًۭا(for) hope٤٦

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

١٨:٤٧

وَيَوْمَAnd the DayنُسَيِّرُWe will cause (to) moveٱلْجِبَالَthe mountainsوَتَرَىand you will seeٱلْأَرْضَthe earthبَارِزَةًۭ(as) a leveled plainوَحَشَرْنَـٰهُمْand We will gather themفَلَمْand notنُغَادِرْWe will leave behindمِنْهُمْfrom themأَحَدًۭاanyone٤٧

And [warn of] the Day when We will remove the mountains and you will see the earth exposed, and We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone.

١٨:٤٨

وَعُرِضُوا۟And they will be presentedعَلَىٰbeforeرَبِّكَyour Lordصَفًّۭا(in) rowsلَّقَدْCertainlyجِئْتُمُونَاyou have come to UsكَمَاasخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْWe created youأَوَّلَthe firstمَرَّةٍۭ ۚtimeبَلْNayزَعَمْتُمْyou claimedأَلَّنthat notنَّجْعَلَWe madeلَكُمfor youمَّوْعِدًۭاan appointment٤٨

And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], "You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment."

١٨:٤٩

وَوُضِعَAnd (will) be placedٱلْكِتَـٰبُthe Bookفَتَرَىand you will seeٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsمُشْفِقِينَfearfulمِمَّاof whatفِيهِ(is) in itوَيَقُولُونَand they will sayيَـٰوَيْلَتَنَاOh, woe to usمَالِWhat (is) forهَـٰذَاthisٱلْكِتَـٰبِ[the] Bookلَاnotيُغَادِرُleavesصَغِيرَةًۭa smallوَلَاand notكَبِيرَةًa greatإِلَّآexceptأَحْصَىٰهَا ۚhas enumerated itوَوَجَدُوا۟And they will findمَاwhatعَمِلُوا۟they didحَاضِرًۭا ۗpresentedوَلَاAnd notيَظْلِمُdeals unjustlyرَبُّكَyour Lordأَحَدًۭا(with) anyone٤٩

And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, "Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?" And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one.

١٨:٥٠

وَإِذْAnd whenقُلْنَاWe saidلِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِto the Angelsٱسْجُدُوا۟Prostrateلِـَٔادَمَto Adamفَسَجَدُوٓا۟so they prostratedإِلَّآexceptإِبْلِيسَIblisكَانَ(He) wasمِنَofٱلْجِنِّthe jinnفَفَسَقَand he rebelledعَنْagainstأَمْرِthe Commandرَبِّهِۦٓ ۗ(of) his LordأَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُۥWill you then take himوَذُرِّيَّتَهُۥٓand his offspringأَوْلِيَآءَ(as) protectorsمِنother than Meدُونِىother than Meوَهُمْwhile theyلَكُمْ(are) to youعَدُوٌّۢ ۚenemiesبِئْسَWretchedلِلظَّـٰلِمِينَfor the wrongdoersبَدَلًۭا(is) the exchange٥٠

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from [i.e., disobeyed] the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange.

١٨:٥١

۞ مَّآNotأَشْهَدتُّهُمْI made them witnessخَلْقَthe creationٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthوَلَاand notخَلْقَthe creationأَنفُسِهِمْ(of) themselvesوَمَاand notكُنتُI Amمُتَّخِذَthe One to takeٱلْمُضِلِّينَthe misleadersعَضُدًۭا(as) helper(s)٥١

I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of themselves, and I would not have taken the misguiders as assistants.

١٨:٥٢

وَيَوْمَAnd the DayيَقُولُHe will sayنَادُوا۟CallشُرَكَآءِىَMy partnersٱلَّذِينَthose whoزَعَمْتُمْyou claimedفَدَعَوْهُمْthen they will call themفَلَمْbut notيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟they will respondلَهُمْto themوَجَعَلْنَاAnd We will makeبَيْنَهُمbetween themمَّوْبِقًۭاa barrier٥٢

And [warn of] the Day when He will say, "Call My 'partners' whom you claimed," and they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them. And We will put between them [a valley of] destruction.

١٨:٥٣

وَرَءَاAnd will seeٱلْمُجْرِمُونَthe criminalsٱلنَّارَthe Fireفَظَنُّوٓا۟and they (will be) certainأَنَّهُمthat theyمُّوَاقِعُوهَاare to fall in itوَلَمْAnd notيَجِدُوا۟they will findعَنْهَاfrom itمَصْرِفًۭاa way of escape٥٣

And the criminals will see the Fire and will be certain that they are to fall therein. And they will not find from it a way elsewhere.

١٨:٥٤

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyصَرَّفْنَاWe have explainedفِىinهَـٰذَاthisٱلْقُرْءَانِthe Quranلِلنَّاسِfor mankindمِنofكُلِّeveryمَثَلٍۢ ۚexampleوَكَانَBut isٱلْإِنسَـٰنُthe manأَكْثَرَ(in) mostشَىْءٍۢthingsجَدَلًۭاquarrelsome٥٤

And We have certainly diversified in this Qur’ān for the people from every [kind of] example; but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute.

١٨:٥٥

وَمَاAnd nothingمَنَعَpreventsٱلنَّاسَmenأَنthatيُؤْمِنُوٓا۟they believeإِذْwhenجَآءَهُمُhas come to themٱلْهُدَىٰthe guidanceوَيَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟and they ask forgivenessرَبَّهُمْ(of) their Lordإِلَّآexceptأَنthatتَأْتِيَهُمْcomes to themسُنَّةُ(the) wayٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)أَوْorيَأْتِيَهُمُcomes to themٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentقُبُلًۭاbefore (them)٥٥

And nothing has prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them and from asking forgiveness of their Lord except that there [must] befall them the [accustomed] precedent of the former peoples or that the punishment should come [directly] before them.

١٨:٥٦

وَمَاAnd notنُرْسِلُWe sendٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersإِلَّاexceptمُبَشِّرِينَ(as) bearers of glad tidingsوَمُنذِرِينَ ۚand (as) warnersوَيُجَـٰدِلُAnd disputeٱلَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُوا۟disbelieveبِٱلْبَـٰطِلِwith falsehoodلِيُدْحِضُوا۟to refuteبِهِtherebyٱلْحَقَّ ۖthe truthوَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟And they takeءَايَـٰتِىMy Versesوَمَآand whatأُنذِرُوا۟they are warnedهُزُوًۭا(in) ridicule٥٦

And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. And those who disbelieve dispute by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth and have taken My verses, and that of which they are warned, in ridicule.

١٨:٥٧

وَمَنْAnd whoأَظْلَمُ(is) more wrongمِمَّنthan (he) whoذُكِّرَis remindedبِـَٔايَـٰتِof the Versesرَبِّهِۦ(of) his Lordفَأَعْرَضَbut turns awayعَنْهَاfrom themوَنَسِىَand forgetsمَاwhatقَدَّمَتْhave sent forthيَدَاهُ ۚhis handsإِنَّاIndeed, Weجَعَلْنَا[We] have placedعَلَىٰoverقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsأَكِنَّةًcoveringsأَنlestيَفْقَهُوهُthey understand itوَفِىٓand inءَاذَانِهِمْtheir earsوَقْرًۭا ۖ(is) deafnessوَإِنAnd ifتَدْعُهُمْyou call themإِلَىtoٱلْهُدَىٰthe guidanceفَلَنthen neverيَهْتَدُوٓا۟they will be guidedإِذًاthenأَبَدًۭاever٥٧

And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance - they will never be guided, then - ever.

١٨:٥٨

وَرَبُّكَAnd your Lordٱلْغَفُورُ(is) the Most ForgivingذُوOwnerٱلرَّحْمَةِ ۖ(of) the MercyلَوْIfيُؤَاخِذُهُمHe were to seize themبِمَاfor whatكَسَبُوا۟they have earnedلَعَجَّلَsurely, He (would) have hastenedلَهُمُfor themٱلْعَذَابَ ۚthe punishmentبَلButلَّهُمfor themمَّوْعِدٌۭ(is) an appointmentلَّنneverيَجِدُوا۟they will findمِنother than itدُونِهِۦother than itمَوْئِلًۭاan escape٥٨

And your Lord is the Forgiving, the possessor of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape.

١٨:٥٩

وَتِلْكَAnd theseٱلْقُرَىٰٓ[the] townsأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْWe destroyed themلَمَّاwhenظَلَمُوا۟they wrongedوَجَعَلْنَاand We madeلِمَهْلِكِهِمfor their destructionمَّوْعِدًۭاan appointed time٥٩

And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.

١٨:٦٠

وَإِذْAnd whenقَالَsaidمُوسَىٰMusaلِفَتَىٰهُto his boyلَآNotأَبْرَحُI will ceaseحَتَّىٰٓuntilأَبْلُغَI reachمَجْمَعَthe junctionٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ(of) the two seasأَوْorأَمْضِىَI continueحُقُبًۭا(for) a long period٦٠

And [mention] when Moses said to his boy [i.e., servant], "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."

١٨:٦١

فَلَمَّاBut whenبَلَغَاthey reachedمَجْمَعَthe junctionبَيْنِهِمَاbetween themنَسِيَاthey forgotحُوتَهُمَاtheir fishفَٱتَّخَذَand it tookسَبِيلَهُۥits wayفِىintoٱلْبَحْرِthe seaسَرَبًۭاslipping away٦١

But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.

١٨:٦٢

فَلَمَّاThen whenجَاوَزَاthey had passed beyondقَالَhe saidلِفَتَىٰهُto his boyءَاتِنَاBring usغَدَآءَنَاour morning mealلَقَدْCertainlyلَقِينَاwe have sufferedمِنinسَفَرِنَاour journeyهَـٰذَاthisنَصَبًۭاfatigue٦٢

So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."

١٨:٦٣

قَالَHe saidأَرَءَيْتَDid you seeإِذْwhenأَوَيْنَآwe retiredإِلَىtoٱلصَّخْرَةِthe rockفَإِنِّىThen indeed, Iنَسِيتُ[I] forgotٱلْحُوتَthe fishوَمَآAnd notأَنسَىٰنِيهُmade me forget itإِلَّاexceptٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُthe Shaitaanأَنْthatأَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚI mention itوَٱتَّخَذَAnd it tookسَبِيلَهُۥits wayفِىintoٱلْبَحْرِthe seaعَجَبًۭاamazingly٦٣

He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly."

١٨:٦٤

قَالَHe saidذَٰلِكَThatمَا(is) whatكُنَّاwe wereنَبْغِ ۚseekingفَٱرْتَدَّاSo they returnedعَلَىٰٓonءَاثَارِهِمَاtheir footprintsقَصَصًۭاretracing٦٤

[Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.

١٨:٦٥

فَوَجَدَاThen they foundعَبْدًۭاa servantمِّنْfromعِبَادِنَآOur servantsءَاتَيْنَـٰهُwhom We had givenرَحْمَةًۭmercyمِّنْfromعِندِنَاUsوَعَلَّمْنَـٰهُand We had taught himمِنfromلَّدُنَّاUsعِلْمًۭاa knowledge٦٥

And they found a servant from among Our servants [i.e., al-Khiḍr] to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.

١٨:٦٦

قَالَSaidلَهُۥto himمُوسَىٰMusaهَلْMayأَتَّبِعُكَI follow youعَلَىٰٓonأَنthatتُعَلِّمَنِyou teach meمِمَّاof whatعُلِّمْتَyou have been taughtرُشْدًۭا(of) right guidance٦٦

Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?"

١٨:٦٧

قَالَHe saidإِنَّكَIndeed, youلَنneverتَسْتَطِيعَwill be ableمَعِىَwith meصَبْرًۭا(to have) patience٦٧

He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.

١٨:٦٨

وَكَيْفَAnd how canتَصْبِرُyou have patienceعَلَىٰforمَاwhatلَمْnotتُحِطْyou encompassبِهِۦof itخُبْرًۭاany knowledge٦٨

And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"

١٨:٦٩

قَالَHe saidسَتَجِدُنِىٓYou will find meإِنifشَآءَAllah willsٱللَّهُAllah willsصَابِرًۭاpatientوَلَآand notأَعْصِىI will disobeyلَكَyourأَمْرًۭاorder٦٩

[Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allāh wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."

١٨:٧٠

قَالَHe saidفَإِنِThen ifٱتَّبَعْتَنِىyou follow meفَلَا(do) notتَسْـَٔلْنِىask meعَنaboutشَىْءٍanythingحَتَّىٰٓuntilأُحْدِثَI presentلَكَto youمِنْهُof itذِكْرًۭاa mention٧٠

He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention [i.e., explanation]."

١٨:٧١

فَٱنطَلَقَاSo they both set outحَتَّىٰٓuntilإِذَاwhenرَكِبَاthey had embarkedفِىonٱلسَّفِينَةِthe shipخَرَقَهَا ۖhe made a hole in itقَالَHe saidأَخَرَقْتَهَاHave you made a hole in itلِتُغْرِقَto drownأَهْلَهَاits peopleلَقَدْCertainlyجِئْتَyou have doneشَيْـًٔاa thingإِمْرًۭاgrave٧١

So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."

١٨:٧٢

قَالَHe saidأَلَمْDid notأَقُلْI sayإِنَّكَindeed, youلَنneverتَسْتَطِيعَwill be ableمَعِىَwith meصَبْرًۭا(to have) patience٧٢

[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

١٨:٧٣

قَالَHe saidلَا(Do) notتُؤَاخِذْنِىblame meبِمَاfor whatنَسِيتُI forgotوَلَاand (do) notتُرْهِقْنِىbe hard (upon) meمِنْinأَمْرِىmy affairعُسْرًۭا(raising) difficulty٧٣

[Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not overwhelm me in my matter with difficulty."

١٨:٧٤

فَٱنطَلَقَاThen they both set outحَتَّىٰٓuntilإِذَاwhenلَقِيَاthey metغُلَـٰمًۭاa boyفَقَتَلَهُۥthen he killed himقَالَHe saidأَقَتَلْتَHave you killedنَفْسًۭاa soulزَكِيَّةًۢpureبِغَيْرِfor other thanنَفْسٍۢa soulلَّقَدْCertainlyجِئْتَyou have doneشَيْـًۭٔاa thingنُّكْرًۭاevil٧٤

So they set out, until when they met a boy, he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."

١٨:٧٥

۞ قَالَHe saidأَلَمْDid notأَقُلI sayلَّكَto youإِنَّكَthat youلَنneverتَسْتَطِيعَwill be ableمَعِىَwith meصَبْرًۭا(to have) patience٧٥

[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

١٨:٧٦

قَالَHe saidإِنIfسَأَلْتُكَI ask youعَنaboutشَىْءٍۭanythingبَعْدَهَاafter itفَلَاthen (do) notتُصَـٰحِبْنِى ۖkeep me as a companionقَدْVerilyبَلَغْتَyou have reachedمِنfrom meلَّدُنِّىfrom meعُذْرًۭاan excuse٧٦

[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."

١٨:٧٧

فَٱنطَلَقَاSo they set outحَتَّىٰٓuntilإِذَآwhenأَتَيَآthey cameأَهْلَ(to the) peopleقَرْيَةٍ(of) a townٱسْتَطْعَمَآthey asked for foodأَهْلَهَا(from) its peopleفَأَبَوْا۟but they refusedأَنtoيُضَيِّفُوهُمَاoffer them hospitalityفَوَجَدَاThen they foundفِيهَاin itجِدَارًۭاa wallيُرِيدُ(that) want(ed)أَنtoيَنقَضَّcollapseفَأَقَامَهُۥ ۖso he set it straightقَالَHe saidلَوْIfشِئْتَyou wishedلَتَّخَذْتَsurely you (could) have takenعَلَيْهِfor itأَجْرًۭاa payment٧٧

So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."

١٨:٧٨

قَالَHe saidهَـٰذَاThisفِرَاقُ(is) partingبَيْنِىbetween meوَبَيْنِكَ ۚand between youسَأُنَبِّئُكَI will inform youبِتَأْوِيلِof (the) interpretationمَا(of) whatلَمْnotتَسْتَطِعyou were ableعَّلَيْهِon itصَبْرًا(to have) patience٧٨

[Al-Khiḍr] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.

١٨:٧٩

أَمَّاAs forٱلسَّفِينَةُthe shipفَكَانَتْit wasلِمَسَـٰكِينَof (the) poor peopleيَعْمَلُونَworkingفِىinٱلْبَحْرِthe seaفَأَرَدتُّSo I intendedأَنْthatأَعِيبَهَاI cause defect (in) itوَكَانَ(as there) wasوَرَآءَهُمafter themمَّلِكٌۭa kingيَأْخُذُwho seizedكُلَّeveryسَفِينَةٍshipغَصْبًۭا(by) force٧٩

As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.

١٨:٨٠

وَأَمَّاAnd as forٱلْغُلَـٰمُthe boyفَكَانَhis parents wereأَبَوَاهُhis parents wereمُؤْمِنَيْنِbelieversفَخَشِينَآand we fearedأَنthatيُرْهِقَهُمَاhe would overburden themطُغْيَـٰنًۭا(by) transgressionوَكُفْرًۭاand disbelief٨٠

And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.

١٨:٨١

فَأَرَدْنَآSo we intendedأَنthatيُبْدِلَهُمَاwould change for themرَبُّهُمَاtheir Lordخَيْرًۭاa betterمِّنْهُthan himزَكَوٰةًۭ(in) purityوَأَقْرَبَand nearerرُحْمًۭا(in) affection٨١

So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.

١٨:٨٢

وَأَمَّاAnd as forٱلْجِدَارُthe wallفَكَانَit wasلِغُلَـٰمَيْنِfor two orphan boysيَتِيمَيْنِfor two orphan boysفِىinٱلْمَدِينَةِthe townوَكَانَand wasتَحْتَهُۥunderneath itكَنزٌۭa treasureلَّهُمَاfor themوَكَانَand wasأَبُوهُمَاtheir fatherصَـٰلِحًۭاrighteousفَأَرَادَSo intendedرَبُّكَyour Lordأَنthatيَبْلُغَآthey reachأَشُدَّهُمَاtheir maturityوَيَسْتَخْرِجَاand bring forthكَنزَهُمَاtheir treasureرَحْمَةًۭ(as) a mercyمِّنfromرَّبِّكَ ۚyour LordوَمَاAnd notفَعَلْتُهُۥI did itعَنْonأَمْرِى ۚmy (own) accordذَٰلِكَThatتَأْوِيلُ(is the) interpretationمَا(of) whatلَمْnotتَسْطِعyou were ableعَّلَيْهِon itصَبْرًۭا(to have) patience٨٢

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."

١٨:٨٣

وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَAnd they ask youعَنaboutذِىDhul-qarnainٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ ۖDhul-qarnainقُلْSayسَأَتْلُوا۟I will reciteعَلَيْكُمto youمِّنْهُabout himذِكْرًاa remembrance٨٣

And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."

١٨:٨٤

إِنَّاIndeed, Weمَكَّنَّا[We] establishedلَهُۥ[for] himفِىinٱلْأَرْضِthe earthوَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُand We gave himمِنofكُلِّeveryشَىْءٍۢthingسَبَبًۭاa means٨٤

Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means].

١٨:٨٥

فَأَتْبَعَSo he followedسَبَبًاa course٨٥

So he followed a way

١٨:٨٦

حَتَّىٰٓUntilإِذَاwhenبَلَغَhe reachedمَغْرِبَ(the) setting placeٱلشَّمْسِ(of) the sunوَجَدَهَاhe found itتَغْرُبُsettingفِىinعَيْنٍa springحَمِئَةٍۢ(of) dark mudوَوَجَدَand he foundعِندَهَاnear itقَوْمًۭا ۗa communityقُلْنَاWe saidيَـٰذَاO Dhul-qarnainٱلْقَرْنَيْنِO Dhul-qarnainإِمَّآEitherأَن[that]تُعَذِّبَyou punishوَإِمَّآorأَن[that]تَتَّخِذَyou takeفِيهِمْ[in] themحُسْنًۭا(with) goodness٨٦

Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water, and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."

١٨:٨٧

قَالَHe saidأَمَّاAs forمَن(one) whoظَلَمَwrongsفَسَوْفَthen soonنُعَذِّبُهُۥwe will punish himثُمَّThenيُرَدُّhe will be returnedإِلَىٰtoرَبِّهِۦhis Lordفَيُعَذِّبُهُۥand He will punish himعَذَابًۭا(with) a punishmentنُّكْرًۭاterrible٨٧

He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire].

١٨:٨٨

وَأَمَّاBut as forمَنْ(one) whoءَامَنَbelievesوَعَمِلَand doesصَـٰلِحًۭاrighteous (deeds)فَلَهُۥthen for himجَزَآءً(is) a rewardٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖgoodوَسَنَقُولُAnd we will speakلَهُۥto himمِنْfromأَمْرِنَاour commandيُسْرًۭا(with) ease٨٨

But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."

١٨:٨٩

ثُمَّThenأَتْبَعَhe followedسَبَبًا(a) course٨٩

Then he followed a way

١٨:٩٠

حَتَّىٰٓUntilإِذَاwhenبَلَغَhe reachedمَطْلِعَ(the) rising placeٱلشَّمْسِ(of) the sunوَجَدَهَاand he found itتَطْلُعُrisingعَلَىٰonقَوْمٍۢa communityلَّمْnotنَجْعَلWe madeلَّهُمfor themمِّنagainst itدُونِهَاagainst itسِتْرًۭاany shelter٩٠

Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.

١٨:٩١

كَذَٰلِكَThusوَقَدْAnd verilyأَحَطْنَاWe encompassedبِمَاof whatلَدَيْهِ(was) with himخُبْرًۭا(of the) information٩١

Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.

١٨:٩٢

ثُمَّThenأَتْبَعَhe followedسَبَبًاa course٩٢

Then he followed a way.

١٨:٩٣

حَتَّىٰٓUntilإِذَاwhenبَلَغَhe reachedبَيْنَbetweenٱلسَّدَّيْنِthe two mountainsوَجَدَhe foundمِنbesides themدُونِهِمَاbesides themقَوْمًۭاa communityلَّاnotيَكَادُونَwho would almostيَفْقَهُونَunderstandقَوْلًۭا(his) speech٩٣

Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.

١٨:٩٤

قَالُوا۟They saidيَـٰذَاO Dhul-qarnainٱلْقَرْنَيْنِO Dhul-qarnainإِنَّIndeedيَأْجُوجَYajujوَمَأْجُوجَand Majujمُفْسِدُونَ(are) corruptersفِىinٱلْأَرْضِthe landفَهَلْSo mayنَجْعَلُwe makeلَكَfor youخَرْجًاan expenditureعَلَىٰٓ[on]أَنthatتَجْعَلَyou makeبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَهُمْand between themسَدًّۭاa barrier٩٤

They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"

١٨:٩٥

قَالَHe saidمَاWhatمَكَّنِّىhas established meفِيهِ[in it]رَبِّىmy Lordخَيْرٌۭ(is) betterفَأَعِينُونِىbut assist meبِقُوَّةٍwith strengthأَجْعَلْI will makeبَيْنَكُمْbetween youوَبَيْنَهُمْand between themرَدْمًاa barrier٩٥

He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength [i.e., manpower]; I will make between you and them a dam.

١٨:٩٦

ءَاتُونِىBring meزُبَرَsheetsٱلْحَدِيدِ ۖ(of) ironحَتَّىٰٓuntilإِذَاwhenسَاوَىٰhe (had) leveledبَيْنَbetweenٱلصَّدَفَيْنِthe two cliffsقَالَhe saidٱنفُخُوا۟ ۖBlowحَتَّىٰٓuntilإِذَاwhenجَعَلَهُۥhe made itنَارًۭاfireقَالَhe saidءَاتُونِىٓBring meأُفْرِغْI pourعَلَيْهِover itقِطْرًۭاmolten copper٩٦

Bring me bars of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."

١٨:٩٧

فَمَاSo notٱسْطَـٰعُوٓا۟they were ableأَنtoيَظْهَرُوهُscale itوَمَاand notٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟they were ableلَهُۥin itنَقْبًۭا(to do) any penetration٩٧

So they [i.e., Gog and Magog] were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.

١٨:٩٨

قَالَHe saidهَـٰذَاThisرَحْمَةٌۭ(is) a mercyمِّنfromرَّبِّى ۖmy LordفَإِذَاBut whenجَآءَcomesوَعْدُ(the) Promiseرَبِّى(of) my LordجَعَلَهُۥHe will make itدَكَّآءَ ۖlevelوَكَانَAnd isوَعْدُ(the) Promiseرَبِّى(of) my Lordحَقًّۭاtrue٩٨

[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes [i.e., approaches], He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true."

١٨:٩٩

۞ وَتَرَكْنَاAnd We (will) leaveبَعْضَهُمْsome of themيَوْمَئِذٍۢ(on) that Dayيَمُوجُto surgeفِىoverبَعْضٍۢ ۖothersوَنُفِخَand (will be) blownفِىinٱلصُّورِthe trumpetفَجَمَعْنَـٰهُمْthen We (will) gather themجَمْعًۭاall together٩٩

And We will leave them that day surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.

١٨:١٠٠

وَعَرَضْنَاAnd We (will) presentجَهَنَّمَHellيَوْمَئِذٍۢ(on) that Dayلِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَto the disbelieversعَرْضًا(on) display١٠٠

And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on display -

١٨:١٠١

ٱلَّذِينَThoseكَانَتْhad beenأَعْيُنُهُمْtheir eyesفِىwithinغِطَآءٍa coverعَنfromذِكْرِىMy remembranceوَكَانُوا۟and wereلَاnotيَسْتَطِيعُونَableسَمْعًا(to) hear١٠١

Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear.

١٨:١٠٢

أَفَحَسِبَDo then thinkٱلَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُوٓا۟disbelieveأَنthatيَتَّخِذُوا۟they (can) takeعِبَادِىMy servantsمِنbesides Meدُونِىٓbesides Meأَوْلِيَآءَ ۚ(as) protectorsإِنَّآIndeed, We أَعْتَدْنَاWe have preparedجَهَنَّمَHellلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelieversنُزُلًۭا(as) a lodging١٠٢

Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.

١٨:١٠٣

قُلْSayهَلْShallنُنَبِّئُكُمWe inform youبِٱلْأَخْسَرِينَof the greatest losersأَعْمَـٰلًا(as to their) deeds١٠٣

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?

١٨:١٠٤

ٱلَّذِينَThose ضَلَّis lostسَعْيُهُمْtheir effortفِىinٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifeٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldوَهُمْwhile theyيَحْسَبُونَthinkأَنَّهُمْthat theyيُحْسِنُونَ(were) acquiring goodصُنْعًا(in) work١٠٤

[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."

١٨:١٠٥

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThoseٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones whoكَفَرُوا۟disbelieveبِـَٔايَـٰتِin the Versesرَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lordوَلِقَآئِهِۦand the meeting (with) HimفَحَبِطَتْSo (are) vainأَعْمَـٰلُهُمْtheir deedsفَلَاso notنُقِيمُWe will assignلَهُمْfor themيَوْمَ(on) the Dayٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionوَزْنًۭاany weight١٠٥

Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any weight [i.e., importance].

١٨:١٠٦

ذَٰلِكَThatجَزَآؤُهُمْ(is) their recompense جَهَنَّمُHell بِمَاbecauseكَفَرُوا۟they disbelievedوَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟and tookءَايَـٰتِىMy Versesوَرُسُلِىand My Messengersهُزُوًا(in) ridicule١٠٦

That is their recompense - Hell - for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.

١٨:١٠٧

إِنَّIndeedٱلَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُوا۟believedوَعَمِلُوا۟and didٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deedsكَانَتْfor them will beلَهُمْfor them will beجَنَّـٰتُGardensٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ(of) the Paradiseنُزُلًا(as) a lodging١٠٧

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging,

١٨:١٠٨

خَـٰلِدِينَAbiding foreverفِيهَاin itلَاNotيَبْغُونَthey will desireعَنْهَاfrom itحِوَلًۭاany transfer١٠٨

Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.

١٨:١٠٩

قُلSayلَّوْIfكَانَwereٱلْبَحْرُthe seaمِدَادًۭاinkلِّكَلِمَـٰتِfor (the) Wordsرَبِّى(of) my Lordلَنَفِدَsurely (would be) exhaustedٱلْبَحْرُthe seaقَبْلَbeforeأَن[that]تَنفَدَ(were) exhaustedكَلِمَـٰتُ(the) Wordsرَبِّى(of) my Lordوَلَوْeven ifجِئْنَاWe broughtبِمِثْلِهِۦ(the) like (of) itمَدَدًۭا(as) a supplement١٠٩

Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in [continual] supplement."

١٨:١١٠

قُلْSayإِنَّمَآOnlyأَنَا۠Iبَشَرٌۭ(am) a manمِّثْلُكُمْlike youيُوحَىٰٓHas been revealedإِلَىَّto meأَنَّمَآthatإِلَـٰهُكُمْyour Godإِلَـٰهٌۭ(is) Godوَٰحِدٌۭ ۖOneفَمَنSo whoeverكَانَisيَرْجُوا۟hopingلِقَآءَ(for the) meetingرَبِّهِۦ(with) his Lordفَلْيَعْمَلْlet him doعَمَلًۭاdeedsصَـٰلِحًۭاrighteousوَلَاand notيُشْرِكْassociateبِعِبَادَةِin (the) worshipرَبِّهِۦٓ(of) his Lordأَحَدًۢاanyone١١٠

Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."
