بِسْمِ In (the) name bis'mi
In (the) name
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
the Most Merciful
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
٧٢:١
قُلْ Say qul
Say
أُوحِىَ It has been revealed ūḥiya
It has been revealed
إِلَىَّ to me ilayya
to me
أَنَّهُ that annahu
that
ٱسْتَمَعَ listened is'tamaʿa
listened
نَفَرٌۭ a group nafarun
a group
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلْجِنِّ the jinn l-jini
the jinn
فَقَالُوٓا۟ and they said faqālū
and they said
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
سَمِعْنَا heard samiʿ'nā
heard
قُرْءَانًا a Quran qur'ānan
a Quran
عَجَبًۭا amazing ʿajaban
amazing
١ (1)
(1)
Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
٧٢:٢
يَهْدِىٓ It guides yahdī
It guides
إِلَى to ilā
to
ٱلرُّشْدِ the right way l-rush'di
the right way
فَـَٔامَنَّا so we believe faāmannā
so we believe
بِهِۦ ۖ in it bihi
in it
وَلَن and never walan
and never
نُّشْرِكَ we will associate nush'rika
we will associate
بِرَبِّنَآ with our Lord birabbinā
with our Lord
أَحَدًۭا anyone aḥadan
anyone
٢ (2)
(2)
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
٧٢:٣
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu
And that He
تَعَـٰلَىٰ Exalted is taʿālā
Exalted is
جَدُّ (the) Majesty jaddu
(the) Majesty
رَبِّنَا (of) our Lord rabbinā
(of) our Lord
مَا not
not
ٱتَّخَذَ He has taken ittakhadha
He has taken
صَـٰحِبَةًۭ a wife ṣāḥibatan
a wife
وَلَا and not walā
and not
وَلَدًۭا a son waladan
a son
٣ (3)
(3)
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
٧٢:٤
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that he wa-annahu
And that he
كَانَ used to kāna
used to
يَقُولُ speak yaqūlu
speak
سَفِيهُنَا the foolish among us safīhunā
the foolish among us
عَلَى against ʿalā
against
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
شَطَطًۭا an excessive transgression shaṭaṭan
an excessive transgression
٤ (4)
(4)
And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees]1 has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.
٧٢:٥
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
ظَنَنَّآ thought ẓanannā
thought
أَن that an
that
لَّن never lan
never
تَقُولَ will say taqūla
will say
ٱلْإِنسُ the men l-insu
the men
وَٱلْجِنُّ and the jinn wal-jinu
and the jinn
عَلَى against ʿalā
against
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
كَذِبًۭا any lie kadhiban
any lie
٥ (5)
(5)
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.
٧٢:٦
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that wa-annahu
And that
كَانَ (there) were kāna
(there) were
رِجَالٌۭ men rijālun
men
مِّنَ among mina
among
ٱلْإِنسِ mankind l-insi
mankind
يَعُوذُونَ who sought refuge yaʿūdhūna
who sought refuge
بِرِجَالٍۢ in (the) men birijālin
in (the) men
مِّنَ from mina
from
ٱلْجِنِّ the jinn l-jini
the jinn
فَزَادُوهُمْ so they increased them fazādūhum
so they increased them
رَهَقًۭا (in) burden rahaqan
(in) burden
٦ (6)
(6)
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
٧٢:٧
وَأَنَّهُمْ And that they wa-annahum
And that they
ظَنُّوا۟ thought ẓannū
thought
كَمَا as kamā
as
ظَنَنتُمْ you thought ẓanantum
you thought
أَن that an
that
لَّن never lan
never
يَبْعَثَ will raise yabʿatha
will raise
ٱللَّهُ Allah l-lahu
Allah
أَحَدًۭا anyone aḥadan
anyone
٧ (7)
(7)
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].
٧٢:٨
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
لَمَسْنَا sought to touch lamasnā
sought to touch
ٱلسَّمَآءَ the heaven l-samāa
the heaven
فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا but we found it fawajadnāhā
but we found it
مُلِئَتْ filled (with) muli-at
filled (with)
حَرَسًۭا guards ḥarasan
guards
شَدِيدًۭا severe shadīdan
severe
وَشُهُبًۭا and flaming fires washuhuban
and flaming fires
٨ (8)
(8)
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
٧٢:٩
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
كُنَّا used to kunnā
used to
نَقْعُدُ sit naqʿudu
sit
مِنْهَا there in min'hā
there in
مَقَـٰعِدَ positions maqāʿida
positions
لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ for hearing lilssamʿi
for hearing
فَمَن but (he) who faman
but (he) who
يَسْتَمِعِ listens yastamiʿi
listens
ٱلْـَٔانَ now l-āna
now
يَجِدْ will find yajid
will find
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
شِهَابًۭا a flaming fire shihāban
a flaming fire
رَّصَدًۭا waiting raṣadan
waiting
٩ (9)
(9)
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
٧٢:١٠
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
لَا not
not
نَدْرِىٓ we know nadrī
we know
أَشَرٌّ whether evil asharrun
whether evil
أُرِيدَ is intended urīda
is intended
بِمَن for (those) who biman
for (those) who
فِى (are) in
(are) in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth l-arḍi
the earth
أَمْ or am
or
أَرَادَ intends arāda
intends
بِهِمْ for them bihim
for them
رَبُّهُمْ their Lord rabbuhum
their Lord
رَشَدًۭا a right path rashadan
a right path
١٠ (10)
(10)
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
٧٢:١١
وَأَنَّا And that [we] wa-annā
And that [we]
مِنَّا among us minnā
among us
ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ (are) the righteous l-ṣāliḥūna
(are) the righteous
وَمِنَّا and among us waminnā
and among us
دُونَ (are) other than dūna
(are) other than
ذَٰلِكَ ۖ that dhālika
that
كُنَّا We kunnā
We
طَرَآئِقَ (are on) ways ṭarāiqa
(are on) ways
قِدَدًۭا different qidadan
different
١١ (11)
(11)
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.
٧٢:١٢
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
ظَنَنَّآ [we] have become certain ẓanannā
[we] have become certain
أَن that an
that
لَّن never lan
never
نُّعْجِزَ we will cause failure nuʿ'jiza
we will cause failure
ٱللَّهَ (to) Allah l-laha
(to) Allah
فِى in
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth l-arḍi
the earth
وَلَن and never walan
and never
نُّعْجِزَهُۥ we can escape Him nuʿ'jizahu
we can escape Him
هَرَبًۭا (by) flight haraban
(by) flight
١٢ (12)
(12)
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
٧٢:١٣
وَأَنَّا And that [we] wa-annā
And that [we]
لَمَّا when lammā
when
سَمِعْنَا we heard samiʿ'nā
we heard
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ the Guidance l-hudā
the Guidance
ءَامَنَّا we believed āmannā
we believed
بِهِۦ ۖ in it bihi
in it
فَمَن And whoever faman
And whoever
يُؤْمِنۢ believes yu'min
believes
بِرَبِّهِۦ in his Lord birabbihi
in his Lord
فَلَا then not falā
then not
يَخَافُ he will fear yakhāfu
he will fear
بَخْسًۭا any loss bakhsan
any loss
وَلَا and not walā
and not
رَهَقًۭا any burden rahaqan
any burden
١٣ (13)
(13)
And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.
٧٢:١٤
وَأَنَّا And that we wa-annā
And that we
مِنَّا among us minnā
among us
ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ (are) Muslims l-mus'limūna
(are) Muslims
وَمِنَّا and among us waminnā
and among us
ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖ (are) unjust l-qāsiṭūna
(are) unjust
فَمَنْ And whoever faman
And whoever
أَسْلَمَ submits aslama
submits
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those fa-ulāika
then those
تَحَرَّوْا۟ have sought taḥarraw
have sought
رَشَدًۭا (the) right path rashadan
(the) right path
١٤ (14)
(14)
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.
٧٢:١٥
وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā
And as for
ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ the unjust l-qāsiṭūna
the unjust
فَكَانُوا۟ they will be fakānū
they will be
لِجَهَنَّمَ for Hell lijahannama
for Hell
حَطَبًۭا firewood ḥaṭaban
firewood
١٥ (15)
(15)
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'
٧٢:١٦
وَأَلَّوِ And that if wa-allawi
And that if
ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ they had remained is'taqāmū
they had remained
عَلَى on ʿalā
on
ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ the Way l-ṭarīqati
the Way
لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم surely We (would) have given them to drink la-asqaynāhum
surely We (would) have given them to drink
مَّآءً water māan
water
غَدَقًۭا (in) abundance ghadaqan
(in) abundance
١٦ (16)
(16)
And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].
٧٢:١٧
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ That We might test them linaftinahum
That We might test them
فِيهِ ۚ therein fīhi
therein
وَمَن And whoever waman
And whoever
يُعْرِضْ turns away yuʿ'riḍ
turns away
عَن from ʿan
from
ذِكْرِ the Remembrance dhik'ri
the Remembrance
رَبِّهِۦ (of) his Lord rabbihi
(of) his Lord
يَسْلُكْهُ He will make him enter yasluk'hu
He will make him enter
عَذَابًۭا a punishment ʿadhāban
a punishment
صَعَدًۭا severe ṣaʿadan
severe
١٧ (17)
(17)
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment.
٧٢:١٨
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna
And that
ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ the masjids l-masājida
the masjids
لِلَّهِ (are) for Allah lillahi
(are) for Allah
فَلَا so (do) not falā
so (do) not
تَدْعُوا۟ call tadʿū
call
مَعَ with maʿa
with
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
أَحَدًۭا anyone aḥadan
anyone
١٨ (18)
(18)
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allāh, so do not invoke with Allāh anyone.
٧٢:١٩
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that wa-annahu
And that
لَمَّا when lammā
when
قَامَ stood up qāma
stood up
عَبْدُ (the) slave ʿabdu
(the) slave
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
يَدْعُوهُ calling (upon) Him yadʿūhu
calling (upon) Him
كَادُوا۟ they almost kādū
they almost
يَكُونُونَ became yakūnūna
became
عَلَيْهِ around him ʿalayhi
around him
لِبَدًۭا a compacted mass libadan
a compacted mass
١٩ (19)
(19)
And that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."1
٧٢:٢٠
قُلْ Say qul
Say
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā
Only
أَدْعُوا۟ I call upon adʿū
I call upon
رَبِّى my Lord rabbī
my Lord
وَلَآ and not walā
and not
أُشْرِكُ I associate ush'riku
I associate
بِهِۦٓ with Him bihi
with Him
أَحَدًۭا anyone aḥadan
anyone
٢٠ (20)
(20)
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."
٧٢:٢١
قُلْ Say qul
Say
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
لَآ (do) not
(do) not
أَمْلِكُ possess amliku
possess
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
ضَرًّۭا any harm ḍarran
any harm
وَلَا and not walā
and not
رَشَدًۭا right path rashadan
right path
٢١ (21)
(21)
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."
٧٢:٢٢
قُلْ Say qul
Say
إِنِّى Indeed I innī
Indeed I
لَن never lan
never
يُجِيرَنِى can protect me yujīranī
can protect me
مِنَ from mina
from
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
أَحَدٌۭ anyone aḥadun
anyone
وَلَنْ and never walan
and never
أَجِدَ can I find ajida
can I find
مِن from min
from
دُونِهِۦ besides Him dūnihi
besides Him
مُلْتَحَدًا any refuge mul'taḥadan
any refuge
٢٢ (22)
(22)
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.
٧٢:٢٣
إِلَّا But illā
But
بَلَـٰغًۭا (the) notification balāghan
(the) notification
مِّنَ from mina
from
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ and His Messages warisālātihi
and His Messages
وَمَن And whoever waman
And whoever
يَعْصِ disobeys yaʿṣi
disobeys
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ and His Messenger warasūlahu
and His Messenger
فَإِنَّ then indeed fa-inna
then indeed
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
نَارَ (is the) Fire nāra
(is the) Fire
جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell jahannama
(of) Hell
خَـٰلِدِينَ (they will) abide khālidīna
(they will) abide
فِيهَآ therein fīhā
therein
أَبَدًا forever abadan
forever
٢٣ (23)
(23)
But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.
٧٢:٢٤
حَتَّىٰٓ Until ḥattā
Until
إِذَا when idhā
when
رَأَوْا۟ they see ra-aw
they see
مَا what
what
يُوعَدُونَ they are promised yūʿadūna
they are promised
فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ then they will know fasayaʿlamūna
then they will know
مَنْ who man
who
أَضْعَفُ (is) weaker aḍʿafu
(is) weaker
نَاصِرًۭا (in) helpers nāṣiran
(in) helpers
وَأَقَلُّ and fewer wa-aqallu
and fewer
عَدَدًۭا (in) number ʿadadan
(in) number
٢٤ (24)
(24)
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.
٧٢:٢٥
قُلْ Say qul
Say
إِنْ Not in
Not
أَدْرِىٓ I know adrī
I know
أَقَرِيبٌۭ whether is near aqarībun
whether is near
مَّا what
what
تُوعَدُونَ you are promised tūʿadūna
you are promised
أَمْ or (whether) am
or (whether)
يَجْعَلُ will appoint yajʿalu
will appoint
لَهُۥ for it lahu
for it
رَبِّىٓ my Lord rabbī
my Lord
أَمَدًا a (distant) term amadan
a (distant) term
٢٥ (25)
(25)
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."
٧٢:٢٦
عَـٰلِمُ (The) All-Knower ʿālimu
(The) All-Knower
ٱلْغَيْبِ (of) the unseen l-ghaybi
(of) the unseen
فَلَا so not falā
so not
يُظْهِرُ He reveals yuẓ'hiru
He reveals
عَلَىٰ from ʿalā
from
غَيْبِهِۦٓ His unseen ghaybihi
His unseen
أَحَدًا (to) anyone aḥadan
(to) anyone
٢٦ (26)
(26)
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
٧٢:٢٧
إِلَّا Except illā
Except
مَنِ whom mani
whom
ٱرْتَضَىٰ He has approved ir'taḍā
He has approved
مِن of min
of
رَّسُولٍۢ a Messenger rasūlin
a Messenger
فَإِنَّهُۥ and indeed, He fa-innahu
and indeed, He
يَسْلُكُ makes to march yasluku
makes to march
مِنۢ from min
from
بَيْنِ before bayni
before
يَدَيْهِ him yadayhi
him
وَمِنْ and from wamin
and from
خَلْفِهِۦ behind him khalfihi
behind him
رَصَدًۭا a guard raṣadan
a guard
٢٧ (27)
(27)
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers
٧٢:٢٨
لِّيَعْلَمَ That He may make evident liyaʿlama
That He may make evident
أَن that an
that
قَدْ indeed qad
indeed
أَبْلَغُوا۟ they have conveyed ablaghū
they have conveyed
رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ (the) Messages risālāti
(the) Messages
رَبِّهِمْ (of) their Lord rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَأَحَاطَ and He has encompassed wa-aḥāṭa
and He has encompassed
بِمَا what bimā
what
لَدَيْهِمْ (is) with them ladayhim
(is) with them
وَأَحْصَىٰ and He takes account wa-aḥṣā
and He takes account
كُلَّ (of) all kulla
(of) all
شَىْءٍ things shayin
things
عَدَدًۢا (in) number ʿadadan
(in) number
٢٨ (28)
(28)
That he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
