القمر

Surah Al-Qamar (القمر) is chapter 54 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 55 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah

بِسْمِIn (the) nameٱللَّهِ(of) Allahٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

54:1

ٱقْتَرَبَتِHas come nearٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hourوَٱنشَقَّand has splitٱلْقَمَرُthe moon١

The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].

54:2

وَإِنAnd ifيَرَوْا۟they seeءَايَةًۭa Signيُعْرِضُوا۟they turn awayوَيَقُولُوا۟and sayسِحْرٌۭMagicمُّسْتَمِرٌّۭcontinuing٢

And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."1

54:3

وَكَذَّبُوا۟And they deniedوَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟and followedأَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚtheir desiresوَكُلُّbut (for) everyأَمْرٍۢmatterمُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ(will be a) settlement٣

And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.

54:4

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyجَآءَهُمhas come to themمِّنَofٱلْأَنۢبَآءِthe informationمَاwhereinفِيهِwhereinمُزْدَجَرٌ(is) deterrence٤

And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.

54:5

حِكْمَةٌۢWisdomبَـٰلِغَةٌۭ ۖperfectفَمَاbut notتُغْنِwill availٱلنُّذُرُthe warnings٥

Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].

54:6

فَتَوَلَّSo turn awayعَنْهُمْ ۘfrom themيَوْمَ(The) Dayيَدْعُwill callٱلدَّاعِthe callerإِلَىٰtoشَىْءٍۢa thingنُّكُرٍterrible٦

So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding,

54:7

خُشَّعًا(Will be) humbledأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْtheir eyesيَخْرُجُونَthey will come forthمِنَfromٱلْأَجْدَاثِthe gravesكَأَنَّهُمْas if they (were)جَرَادٌۭlocustsمُّنتَشِرٌۭspreading٧

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,

54:8

مُّهْطِعِينَRacing aheadإِلَىtowardsٱلدَّاعِ ۖthe callerيَقُولُWill sayٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَthe disbelieversهَـٰذَاThisيَوْمٌ(is) a Dayعَسِرٌۭdifficult٨

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."

54:9

۞ كَذَّبَتْDeniedقَبْلَهُمْbefore themقَوْمُ(the) peopleنُوحٍۢ(of) Nuhفَكَذَّبُوا۟and they deniedعَبْدَنَاOur slaveوَقَالُوا۟and saidمَجْنُونٌۭA madmanوَٱزْدُجِرَand he was repelled٩

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.

54:10

فَدَعَاSo he calledرَبَّهُۥٓhis LordأَنِّىI amمَغْلُوبٌۭone overpoweredفَٱنتَصِرْso help١٠

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."

54:11

فَفَتَحْنَآSo We openedأَبْوَٰبَ(the) gatesٱلسَّمَآءِ(of) heavenبِمَآءٍۢwith waterمُّنْهَمِرٍۢpouring down١١

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

54:12

وَفَجَّرْنَاAnd We caused to burstٱلْأَرْضَthe earthعُيُونًۭا(with) springsفَٱلْتَقَىso metٱلْمَآءُthe water(s)عَلَىٰٓforأَمْرٍۢa matterقَدْalreadyقُدِرَpredestined١٢

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.

54:13

وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُAnd We carried himعَلَىٰonذَاتِ(ark) made of planksأَلْوَٰحٍۢ(ark) made of planksوَدُسُرٍۢand nails١٣

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,

54:14

تَجْرِىSailingبِأَعْيُنِنَاbefore Our eyesجَزَآءًۭa rewardلِّمَنfor (he) whoكَانَwasكُفِرَdenied١٤

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.

54:15

وَلَقَدAnd certainlyتَّرَكْنَـٰهَآWe left itءَايَةًۭ(as) a Signفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition١٥

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?

54:16

فَكَيْفَSo howكَانَwasعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings١٦

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:17

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاWe have made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranلِلذِّكْرِfor remembranceفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition١٧

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:18

كَذَّبَتْDeniedعَادٌۭAadفَكَيْفَso howكَانَwasعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings١٨

ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:19

إِنَّآIndeed, Weأَرْسَلْنَا[We] sentعَلَيْهِمْupon themرِيحًۭاa windصَرْصَرًۭاfuriousفِىonيَوْمِa dayنَحْسٍۢ(of) misfortuneمُّسْتَمِرٍّۢcontinuous١٩

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,

54:20

تَنزِعُPlucking outٱلنَّاسَmenكَأَنَّهُمْas if they (were)أَعْجَازُtrunksنَخْلٍۢ(of) date-palmsمُّنقَعِرٍۢuprooted٢٠

Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

54:21

فَكَيْفَSo howكَانَwasعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings٢١

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:22

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاWe have made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranلِلذِّكْرِfor remembranceفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition٢٢

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:23

كَذَّبَتْDeniedثَمُودُThamudبِٱلنُّذُرِthe warnings٢٣

Thamūd denied the warning.

54:24

فَقَالُوٓا۟And saidأَبَشَرًۭاIs (it) a human beingمِّنَّاamong usوَٰحِدًۭاoneنَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ(that) we should follow himإِنَّآIndeed, weإِذًۭاthenلَّفِى(will be) surely inضَلَـٰلٍۢerrorوَسُعُرٍand madness٢٤

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

54:25

أَءُلْقِىَHas been sentٱلذِّكْرُthe Reminderعَلَيْهِto himمِنۢfromبَيْنِنَاamong usبَلْNayهُوَheكَذَّابٌ(is) a liarأَشِرٌۭinsolent٢٥

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."

54:26

سَيَعْلَمُونَThey will knowغَدًۭاtomorrowمَّنِwhoٱلْكَذَّابُ(is) the liarٱلْأَشِرُthe insolent one٢٦

They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

54:27

إِنَّاIndeed, Weمُرْسِلُوا۟(are) sendingٱلنَّاقَةِthe she-camelفِتْنَةًۭ(as) a trialلَّهُمْfor themفَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْso watch themوَٱصْطَبِرْand be patient٢٧

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

54:28

وَنَبِّئْهُمْAnd inform themأَنَّthatٱلْمَآءَthe waterقِسْمَةٌۢ(is) to be sharedبَيْنَهُمْ ۖbetween themكُلُّeachشِرْبٍۢdrinkمُّحْتَضَرٌۭattended٢٨

And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn].

54:29

فَنَادَوْا۟But they calledصَاحِبَهُمْtheir companionفَتَعَاطَىٰand he tookفَعَقَرَand hamstrung٢٩

But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her].

54:30

فَكَيْفَSo howكَانَwasعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings٣٠

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:31

إِنَّآIndeed, Weأَرْسَلْنَا[We] sentعَلَيْهِمْupon themصَيْحَةًۭthunderous blastوَٰحِدَةًۭsingleفَكَانُوا۟and they becameكَهَشِيمِlike dry twig fragmentsٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ(used by) a fence builder٣١

Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.

54:32

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاWe have made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranلِلذِّكْرِfor remembranceفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition٣٢

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:33

كَذَّبَتْDeniedقَوْمُ(the) peopleلُوطٍۭ(of) Lutبِٱلنُّذُرِthe warnings٣٣

The people of Lot denied the warning.

54:34

إِنَّآIndeed, Weأَرْسَلْنَا[We] sentعَلَيْهِمْupon themحَاصِبًاa storm of stonesإِلَّآexceptءَالَ(the) familyلُوطٍۢ ۖ(of) LutنَّجَّيْنَـٰهُمWe saved themبِسَحَرٍۢby dawn٣٤

Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.

54:35

نِّعْمَةًۭ(As) a favorمِّنْfromعِندِنَا ۚUsكَذَٰلِكَThusنَجْزِىWe rewardمَن(one) whoشَكَرَ(is) grateful٣٥

As favor from Us. Thus do We reward he who is grateful.

54:36

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyأَنذَرَهُمhe warned themبَطْشَتَنَا(of) Our seizureفَتَمَارَوْا۟but they disputedبِٱلنُّذُرِthe warnings٣٦

And he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning.

54:37

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyرَٰوَدُوهُthey demanded from himعَنthey demanded from himضَيْفِهِۦhis guestsفَطَمَسْنَآso We blindedأَعْيُنَهُمْtheir eyesفَذُوقُوا۟So tasteعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings٣٧

And they had demanded from him his guests, but We obliterated their eyes, [saying], "Taste My punishment and warning."

54:38

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyصَبَّحَهُمseized them in the morningبُكْرَةًearlyعَذَابٌۭa punishmentمُّسْتَقِرٌّۭabiding٣٨

And there came upon them by morning an abiding punishment.

54:39

فَذُوقُوا۟So tasteعَذَابِىMy punishmentوَنُذُرِand My warnings٣٩

So taste My punishment and warning.

54:40

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاWe have made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranلِلذِّكْرِfor remembranceفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition٤٠

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:41

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyجَآءَcameءَالَ(to the) peopleفِرْعَوْنَ(of) Firaunٱلنُّذُرُwarnings٤١

And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.

54:42

كَذَّبُوا۟They deniedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاOur Signsكُلِّهَاall of themفَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْso We seized themأَخْذَ(with) a seizureعَزِيزٍۢ(of) All-Mightyمُّقْتَدِرٍ(the) Powerful One٤٢

They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.

54:43

أَكُفَّارُكُمْAre your disbelieversخَيْرٌۭbetterمِّنْthanأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْthoseأَمْorلَكُمfor youبَرَآءَةٌۭ(is) an exemptionفِىinٱلزُّبُرِthe Scriptures٤٣

Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?

54:44

أَمْOrيَقُولُونَ(do) they sayنَحْنُWeجَمِيعٌۭ(are) an assemblyمُّنتَصِرٌۭhelping (each other)٤٤

Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?

54:45

سَيُهْزَمُSoon will be defeatedٱلْجَمْعُ(their) assemblyوَيُوَلُّونَand they will turnٱلدُّبُرَ(their) backs٤٥

[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].

54:46

بَلِNayٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hourمَوْعِدُهُمْ(is) their promised timeوَٱلسَّاعَةُand the Hourأَدْهَىٰ(will be) more grievousوَأَمَرُّand more bitter٤٦

But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.

54:47

إِنَّIndeedٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsفِى(are) inضَلَـٰلٍۢan errorوَسُعُرٍۢand madness٤٧

Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness..

54:48

يَوْمَ(The) Dayيُسْحَبُونَthey will be draggedفِىintoٱلنَّارِthe Fireعَلَىٰonوُجُوهِهِمْtheir facesذُوقُوا۟Tasteمَسَّ(the) touchسَقَرَ(of) Hell٤٨

The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said], "Taste the touch of Saqar."1

54:49

إِنَّاIndeed, [We]كُلَّeveryشَىْءٍthingخَلَقْنَـٰهُWe created itبِقَدَرٍۢby a measure٤٩

Indeed, all things We created with predestination.

54:50

وَمَآAnd notأَمْرُنَآ(is) Our Commandإِلَّاbutوَٰحِدَةٌۭoneكَلَمْحٍۭlike the twinklingبِٱلْبَصَرِ(of) the eye٥٠

And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.

54:51

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyأَهْلَكْنَآWe destroyedأَشْيَاعَكُمْyour kindsفَهَلْso is (there)مِنanyمُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition٥١

And We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember?

54:52

وَكُلُّAnd everyشَىْءٍۢthingفَعَلُوهُthey didفِى(is) inٱلزُّبُرِthe written records٥٢

And everything they did is in written records.

54:53

وَكُلُّAnd everyصَغِيرٍۢsmallوَكَبِيرٍۢand bigمُّسْتَطَرٌ(is) written down٥٣

And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.

54:54

إِنَّIndeedٱلْمُتَّقِينَthe righteousفِى(will be) inجَنَّـٰتٍۢgardensوَنَهَرٍۢand river٥٤

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers,

54:55

فِىInمَقْعَدِa seatصِدْقٍ(of) honorعِندَnearمَلِيكٍۢa KingمُّقْتَدِرٍۭMost Powerful٥٥

In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.
