بسملة

بِسْمِIn (the) nameٱللَّهِ(of) Allahٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

٤٣:١

حمٓHa Meem١

Ḥā, Meem.

٤٣:٢

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِBy the Bookٱلْمُبِينِthe clear٢

By the clear Book,

٤٣:٣

إِنَّاIndeed, Weجَعَلْنَـٰهُ(have) made itقُرْءَٰنًاa Quranعَرَبِيًّۭا(in) Arabicلَّعَلَّكُمْso that you mayتَعْقِلُونَunderstand٣

Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.

٤٣:٤

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itفِىٓ(is) inأُمِّ(the) Motherٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Bookلَدَيْنَاwith Usلَعَلِىٌّsurely exaltedحَكِيمٌfull of wisdom٤

And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.

٤٣:٥

أَفَنَضْرِبُThen should We take awayعَنكُمُfrom youٱلذِّكْرَthe Reminderصَفْحًاdisregarding (you)أَنbecauseكُنتُمْyou areقَوْمًۭاa peopleمُّسْرِفِينَtransgressing٥

Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?

٤٣:٦

وَكَمْAnd how manyأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنofنَّبِىٍّۢa Prophetفِىamongٱلْأَوَّلِينَthe former (people)٦

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,

٤٣:٧

وَمَاAnd notيَأْتِيهِمcame to themمِّنany Prophetنَّبِىٍّany Prophetإِلَّاbutكَانُوا۟they used toبِهِۦmock at himيَسْتَهْزِءُونَmock at him٧

But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

٤٣:٨

فَأَهْلَكْنَآThen We destroyedأَشَدَّstrongerمِنْهُمthan themبَطْشًۭا(in) powerوَمَضَىٰand has passedمَثَلُ(the) exampleٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)٨

And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.

٤٣:٩

وَلَئِنAnd ifسَأَلْتَهُمyou ask themمَّنْWhoخَلَقَcreatedٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthلَيَقُولُنَّThey will surely sayخَلَقَهُنَّCreated themٱلْعَزِيزُthe All-Mightyٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower٩

And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"

٤٣:١٠

ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoجَعَلَmadeلَكُمُfor youٱلْأَرْضَthe earthمَهْدًۭاa bedوَجَعَلَand madeلَكُمْfor youفِيهَاthereinسُبُلًۭاroadsلَّعَلَّكُمْso that you mayتَهْتَدُونَ(be) guided١٠

[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided

٤٣:١١

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Whoنَزَّلَsends downمِنَfromٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyمَآءًۢwaterبِقَدَرٍۢin (due) measureفَأَنشَرْنَاthen We reviveبِهِۦwith itبَلْدَةًۭa landمَّيْتًۭا ۚdeadكَذَٰلِكَthusتُخْرَجُونَyou will be brought forth١١

And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -

٤٣:١٢

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Whoخَلَقَcreatedٱلْأَزْوَٰجَthe pairsكُلَّهَاall of themوَجَعَلَand madeلَكُمfor youمِّنَ[of]ٱلْفُلْكِthe shipsوَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِand the cattleمَاwhatتَرْكَبُونَyou ride١٢

And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount

٤٣:١٣

لِتَسْتَوُۥا۟That you may sit firmlyعَلَىٰonظُهُورِهِۦtheir backsثُمَّthenتَذْكُرُوا۟rememberنِعْمَةَ(the) favorرَبِّكُمْ(of) your Lordإِذَاwhenٱسْتَوَيْتُمْyou sit firmlyعَلَيْهِon themوَتَقُولُوا۟and sayسُبْحَـٰنَGlory be (to)ٱلَّذِىthe One Whoسَخَّرَ(has) subjectedلَنَاto usهَـٰذَاthisوَمَاand notكُنَّاwe wereلَهُۥof itمُقْرِنِينَcapable١٣

That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.

٤٣:١٤

وَإِنَّآAnd indeed, weإِلَىٰtoرَبِّنَاour Lordلَمُنقَلِبُونَwill surely return١٤

And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."

٤٣:١٥

وَجَعَلُوا۟But they attributeلَهُۥto HimمِنْfromعِبَادِهِۦHis slavesجُزْءًا ۚa portionإِنَّIndeedٱلْإِنسَـٰنَmanلَكَفُورٌۭsurely (is) clearly ungratefulمُّبِينٌsurely (is) clearly ungrateful١٥

But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.

٤٣:١٦

أَمِOrٱتَّخَذَhas He takenمِمَّاof whatيَخْلُقُHe has createdبَنَاتٍۢdaughtersوَأَصْفَىٰكُمand He has chosen (for) youبِٱلْبَنِينَsons١٦

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?

٤٣:١٧

وَإِذَاAnd whenبُشِّرَis given good newsأَحَدُهُم(to) one of themبِمَاof whatضَرَبَhe sets upلِلرَّحْمَـٰنِfor the Most Graciousمَثَلًۭا(as) a likenessظَلَّbecomesوَجْهُهُۥhis faceمُسْوَدًّۭاdarkوَهُوَand heكَظِيمٌ(is) filled with grief١٧

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

٤٣:١٨

أَوَمَنThen (is one) whoيُنَشَّؤُا۟is brought upفِىinٱلْحِلْيَةِornamentsوَهُوَand heفِىinٱلْخِصَامِthe disputeغَيْرُ(is) notمُبِينٍۢclear١٨

So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allāh]?

٤٣:١٩

وَجَعَلُوا۟And they madeٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَthe Angelsٱلَّذِينَthose whoهُمْthemselvesعِبَـٰدُ(are) slavesٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ(of) the Most Graciousإِنَـٰثًا ۚfemalesأَشَهِدُوا۟Did they witnessخَلْقَهُمْ ۚtheir creationسَتُكْتَبُWill be recordedشَهَـٰدَتُهُمْtheir testimonyوَيُسْـَٔلُونَand they will be questioned١٩

And they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

٤٣:٢٠

وَقَالُوا۟And they sayلَوْIfشَآءَhad willedٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Graciousمَاwe would not have worshipped themعَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗwe would not have worshipped themمَّاNotلَهُمthey haveبِذَٰلِكَabout thatمِنْanyعِلْمٍ ۖknowledgeإِنْNothingهُمْthey (do)إِلَّاbutيَخْرُصُونَlie٢٠

And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but misjudging.

٤٣:٢١

أَمْOrءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْhave We given themكِتَـٰبًۭاa bookمِّنbefore itقَبْلِهِۦbefore itفَهُمso theyبِهِۦto itمُسْتَمْسِكُونَ(are) holding fast٢١

Or have We given them a book before it [i.e., the Qur’ān] to which they are adhering?

٤٣:٢٢

بَلْNayقَالُوٓا۟they sayإِنَّاIndeed, weوَجَدْنَآ[we] foundءَابَآءَنَاour forefathersعَلَىٰٓuponأُمَّةٍۢa religionوَإِنَّاand indeed, weعَلَىٰٓonءَاثَـٰرِهِمtheir footstepsمُّهْتَدُونَ(are) guided٢٢

Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."

٤٣:٢٣

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thusمَآnotأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنbefore youقَبْلِكَbefore youفِىinقَرْيَةٍۢa townمِّنanyنَّذِيرٍwarnerإِلَّاexceptقَالَsaidمُتْرَفُوهَآ(the) wealthy ones of itإِنَّاIndeed, weوَجَدْنَآ[we] foundءَابَآءَنَاour forefathersعَلَىٰٓonأُمَّةٍۢa religionوَإِنَّاand indeed, weعَلَىٰٓ[on]ءَاثَـٰرِهِمtheir footstepsمُّقْتَدُونَ(are) following٢٣

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."

٤٣:٢٤

۞ قَـٰلَHe saidأَوَلَوْEven ifجِئْتُكُمI brought youبِأَهْدَىٰbetter guidanceمِمَّاthan whatوَجَدتُّمْyou foundعَلَيْهِon itءَابَآءَكُمْ ۖyour forefathersقَالُوٓا۟They saidإِنَّاIndeed, weبِمَآwith whatأُرْسِلْتُمyou are sentبِهِۦwith [it]كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers٢٤

[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."

٤٣:٢٥

فَٱنتَقَمْنَاSo We took retributionمِنْهُمْ ۖfrom themفَٱنظُرْThen seeكَيْفَhowكَانَwasعَـٰقِبَةُ(the) endٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ(of) the deniers٢٥

So We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.

٤٣:٢٦

وَإِذْAnd whenقَالَIbrahim SaidإِبْرَٰهِيمُIbrahim Saidلِأَبِيهِto his fatherوَقَوْمِهِۦٓand his peopleإِنَّنِىIndeed, I (am)بَرَآءٌۭdisassociatedمِّمَّاfrom whatتَعْبُدُونَyou worship٢٦

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship

٤٣:٢٧

إِلَّاExceptٱلَّذِىthe One Whoفَطَرَنِىcreated meفَإِنَّهُۥand indeed, Heسَيَهْدِينِwill guide me٢٧

Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."

٤٣:٢٨

وَجَعَلَهَاAnd he made itكَلِمَةًۢa wordبَاقِيَةًۭlastingفِىamongعَقِبِهِۦhis descendentsلَعَلَّهُمْso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَreturn٢٨

And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].

٤٣:٢٩

بَلْNayمَتَّعْتُI gave enjoymentهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ(to) theseوَءَابَآءَهُمْand their forefathersحَتَّىٰuntilجَآءَهُمُcame to themٱلْحَقُّthe truthوَرَسُولٌۭand a Messengerمُّبِينٌۭclear٢٩

However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

٤٣:٣٠

وَلَمَّاAnd whenجَآءَهُمُcame to themٱلْحَقُّthe truthقَالُوا۟they saidهَـٰذَاThisسِحْرٌۭ(is) magicوَإِنَّاand indeed, weبِهِۦof itكَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers٣٠

But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."

٤٣:٣١

وَقَالُوا۟And they sayلَوْلَاWhy notنُزِّلَwas sent downهَـٰذَاthisٱلْقُرْءَانُthe Quranعَلَىٰtoرَجُلٍۢa manمِّنَfromٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِthe two townsعَظِيمٍgreat٣١

And they said, "Why was this Qur’ān not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"1

٤٣:٣٢

أَهُمْDo theyيَقْسِمُونَdistributeرَحْمَتَ(the) Mercyرَبِّكَ ۚ(of) your LordنَحْنُWeقَسَمْنَا[We] distributeبَيْنَهُمamong themمَّعِيشَتَهُمْtheir livelihoodفِىinٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifeٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ(of) the worldوَرَفَعْنَاand We raiseبَعْضَهُمْsome of themفَوْقَaboveبَعْضٍۢothersدَرَجَـٰتٍۢ(in) degreesلِّيَتَّخِذَso that may takeبَعْضُهُمsome of themبَعْضًۭاothersسُخْرِيًّۭا ۗ(for) serviceوَرَحْمَتُBut (the) Mercyرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordخَيْرٌۭ(is) betterمِّمَّاthan whatيَجْمَعُونَthey accumulate٣٢

Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.

٤٣:٣٣

وَلَوْلَآAnd if notأَنthatيَكُونَ(would) becomeٱلنَّاسُ[the] mankindأُمَّةًۭa communityوَٰحِدَةًۭoneلَّجَعَلْنَاWe (would have) madeلِمَنfor (one) whoيَكْفُرُdisbelievesبِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِin the Most Graciousلِبُيُوتِهِمْfor their housesسُقُفًۭاroofsمِّنofفِضَّةٍۢsilverوَمَعَارِجَand stairwaysعَلَيْهَاupon whichيَظْهَرُونَthey mount٣٣

And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount.

٤٣:٣٤

وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْAnd for their housesأَبْوَٰبًۭاdoorsوَسُرُرًاand couchesعَلَيْهَاupon whichيَتَّكِـُٔونَthey recline٣٤

And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline

٤٣:٣٥

وَزُخْرُفًۭا ۚAnd ornaments of goldوَإِنAnd not (is)كُلُّallذَٰلِكَthatلَمَّاbutمَتَـٰعُan enjoymentٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifeٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ(of) the worldوَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُAnd the Hereafterعِندَwithرَبِّكَyour Lordلِلْمُتَّقِينَ(is) for the righteous٣٥

And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

٤٣:٣٦

وَمَنAnd whoeverيَعْشُturns awayعَنfromذِكْرِ(the) remembranceٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ(of) the Most GraciousنُقَيِّضْWe appointلَهُۥfor himشَيْطَـٰنًۭاa devilفَهُوَthen heلَهُۥ(is) to himقَرِينٌۭa companion٣٦

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.

٤٣:٣٧

وَإِنَّهُمْAnd indeed, theyلَيَصُدُّونَهُمْsurely, turn themعَنِfromٱلسَّبِيلِthe Pathوَيَحْسَبُونَand they thinkأَنَّهُمthat theyمُّهْتَدُونَ(are) guided٣٧

And indeed, they [i.e., the devils] avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided

٤٣:٣٨

حَتَّىٰٓUntilإِذَاwhenجَآءَنَاhe comes to Usقَالَhe saysيَـٰلَيْتَO would thatبَيْنِىbetween meوَبَيْنَكَand between youبُعْدَ(were the) distanceٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ(of) the East and the WestفَبِئْسَHow wretched isٱلْقَرِينُthe companion٣٨

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "How I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west; and what a wretched companion."

٤٣:٣٩

وَلَنAnd neverيَنفَعَكُمُwill benefit youٱلْيَوْمَthe Dayإِذwhenظَّلَمْتُمْyou have wrongedأَنَّكُمْthat youفِى(will be) inٱلْعَذَابِthe punishmentمُشْتَرِكُونَsharing٣٩

And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.

٤٣:٤٠

أَفَأَنتَThen can youتُسْمِعُcause to hearٱلصُّمَّthe deafأَوْorتَهْدِىguideٱلْعُمْىَthe blindوَمَنand (one) whoكَانَisفِىinضَلَـٰلٍۢan errorمُّبِينٍۢclear٤٠

Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muḥammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?

٤٣:٤١

فَإِمَّاAnd whetherنَذْهَبَنَّWe take you awayبِكَWe take you awayفَإِنَّاthen indeed, Weمِنْهُمfrom themمُّنتَقِمُونَ(will) take retribution٤١

And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.

٤٣:٤٢

أَوْOrنُرِيَنَّكَWe show youٱلَّذِىthat whichوَعَدْنَـٰهُمْWe have promised themفَإِنَّاthen indeed, Weعَلَيْهِمover themمُّقْتَدِرُونَhave full power٤٢

Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.

٤٣:٤٣

فَٱسْتَمْسِكْSo hold fastبِٱلَّذِىٓto that whichأُوحِىَis revealedإِلَيْكَ ۖto youإِنَّكَIndeed, youعَلَىٰ(are) onصِرَٰطٍۢa PathمُّسْتَقِيمٍۢStraight٤٣

So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.

٤٣:٤٤

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itلَذِكْرٌۭ(is) surely, a Reminderلَّكَfor youوَلِقَوْمِكَ ۖand your peopleوَسَوْفَand soonتُسْـَٔلُونَyou will be questioned٤٤

And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.

٤٣:٤٥

وَسْـَٔلْAnd askمَنْ(those) whomأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنbefore youقَبْلِكَbefore youمِنofرُّسُلِنَآOur Messengersأَجَعَلْنَاdid We makeمِنbesidesدُونِbesidesٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousءَالِهَةًۭgodsيُعْبَدُونَto be worshipped٤٥

And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?

٤٣:٤٦

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمُوسَىٰMusaبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآwith Our SignsإِلَىٰtoفِرْعَوْنَFiraunوَمَلَإِي۟هِۦand his chiefsفَقَالَand he saidإِنِّىIndeed, I amرَسُولُa Messengerرَبِّ(of the) Lordٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds٤٦

And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."

٤٣:٤٧

فَلَمَّاBut whenجَآءَهُمhe came to themبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآwith Our SignsإِذَاbeholdهُمTheyمِّنْهَاat themيَضْحَكُونَlaughed٤٧

But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.

٤٣:٤٨

وَمَاAnd notنُرِيهِمWe showed themمِّنْofءَايَةٍa Signإِلَّاbutهِىَitأَكْبَرُ(was) greaterمِنْthanأُخْتِهَا ۖits sisterوَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمand We seized themبِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishmentلَعَلَّهُمْso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَreturn٤٨

And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].

٤٣:٤٩

وَقَالُوا۟And they saidيَـٰٓأَيُّهَOٱلسَّاحِرُ[the] magicianٱدْعُInvokeلَنَاfor usرَبَّكَyour Lordبِمَاby whatعَهِدَHe has made covenantعِندَكَwith youإِنَّنَاIndeed, weلَمُهْتَدُونَ(will) surely be guided٤٩

And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."

٤٣:٥٠

فَلَمَّاBut whenكَشَفْنَاWe removedعَنْهُمُfrom themٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentإِذَاbeholdهُمْTheyيَنكُثُونَbroke (their word)٥٠

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.

٤٣:٥١

وَنَادَىٰAnd called outفِرْعَوْنُFiraunفِىamongقَوْمِهِۦhis peopleقَالَhe saidيَـٰقَوْمِO my peopleأَلَيْسَIs notلِىfor meمُلْكُ(the) kingdomمِصْرَ(of) Egyptوَهَـٰذِهِand theseٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ[the] riversتَجْرِىflowingمِنunderneath meتَحْتِىٓ ۖunderneath meأَفَلَاThen do notتُبْصِرُونَyou see٥١

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?

٤٣:٥٢

أَمْOrأَنَا۠am Iخَيْرٌۭbetterمِّنْthanهَـٰذَاthisٱلَّذِىone who هُوَheمَهِينٌۭ(is) insignificantوَلَاand hardlyيَكَادُand hardlyيُبِينُclear٥٢

Or am I [not] better than this one [i.e., Moses] who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?

٤٣:٥٣

فَلَوْلَآThen why notأُلْقِىَare placedعَلَيْهِon himأَسْوِرَةٌۭbraceletsمِّنofذَهَبٍgoldأَوْorجَآءَcomeمَعَهُwith himٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُthe Angelsمُقْتَرِنِينَaccompanying (him)٥٣

Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"

٤٣:٥٤

فَٱسْتَخَفَّSo he bluffedقَوْمَهُۥhis peopleفَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚand they obeyed himإِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟wereقَوْمًۭاa peopleفَـٰسِقِينَdefiantly disobedient٥٤

So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allāh].

٤٣:٥٥

فَلَمَّآSo whenءَاسَفُونَاthey angered UsٱنتَقَمْنَاWe took retributionمِنْهُمْfrom themفَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْand We drowned themأَجْمَعِينَall٥٥

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

٤٣:٥٦

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْAnd We made themسَلَفًۭاa precedentوَمَثَلًۭاand an exampleلِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَfor the later (generations)٥٦

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.

٤٣:٥٧

۞ وَلَمَّاAnd whenضُرِبَis presentedٱبْنُ(the) sonمَرْيَمَ(of) Maryamمَثَلًا(as) an exampleإِذَاbeholdقَوْمُكَYour peopleمِنْهُabout itيَصِدُّونَlaughed aloud٥٧

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.

٤٣:٥٨

وَقَالُوٓا۟And they saidءَأَـٰلِهَتُنَاAre our godsخَيْرٌbetterأَمْorهُوَ ۚheمَاNotضَرَبُوهُthey present itلَكَto youإِلَّاexceptجَدَلًۢا ۚ(for) argumentبَلْNayهُمْtheyقَوْمٌ(are) a peopleخَصِمُونَargumentative٥٨

And they said, "Are our gods better, or is he?"1 They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.

٤٣:٥٩

إِنْNotهُوَheإِلَّا(was) exceptعَبْدٌa slaveأَنْعَمْنَاWe bestowed Our favorعَلَيْهِon himوَجَعَلْنَـٰهُand We made himمَثَلًۭاan exampleلِّبَنِىٓfor (the) Children of Israelإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَfor (the) Children of Israel٥٩

He [i.e., Jesus] was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

٤٣:٦٠

وَلَوْAnd ifنَشَآءُWe willedلَجَعَلْنَاsurely We (could have) madeمِنكُمamong youمَّلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭAngelsفِىinٱلْأَرْضِthe earthيَخْلُفُونَsucceeding٦٠

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another]1 on the earth.

٤٣:٦١

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itلَعِلْمٌۭsurely (is) a knowledgeلِّلسَّاعَةِof the HourفَلَاSo (do) notتَمْتَرُنَّ(be) doubtfulبِهَاabout itوَٱتَّبِعُونِ ۚand follow MeهَـٰذَاThisصِرَٰطٌۭ(is the) PathمُّسْتَقِيمٌۭStraight٦١

And indeed, he [i.e., Jesus] will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.

٤٣:٦٢

وَلَاAnd (let) notيَصُدَّنَّكُمُavert youٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ ۖthe ShaitaanإِنَّهُۥIndeed, heلَكُمْ(is) for youعَدُوٌّۭan enemyمُّبِينٌۭclear٦٢

And never let Satan avert you. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

٤٣:٦٣

وَلَمَّاAnd whenجَآءَcameعِيسَىٰIsaبِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِwith clear proofsقَالَhe saidقَدْVerilyجِئْتُكُمI have come to youبِٱلْحِكْمَةِwith wisdomوَلِأُبَيِّنَand that I make clearلَكُمto youبَعْضَsomeٱلَّذِى(of) that whichتَخْتَلِفُونَyou differفِيهِ ۖin itفَٱتَّقُوا۟So fearٱللَّهَAllahوَأَطِيعُونِand obey me٦٣

And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, "I have come to you with wisdom [i.e., prophethood] and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ, so fear Allāh and obey me.

٤٣:٦٤

إِنَّIndeedٱللَّهَAllahهُوَHeرَبِّى(is) my Lordوَرَبُّكُمْand your Lordفَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚso worship HimهَـٰذَاThisصِرَٰطٌۭ(is) a PathمُّسْتَقِيمٌۭStraight٦٤

Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path."

٤٣:٦٥

فَٱخْتَلَفَBut differedٱلْأَحْزَابُthe factionsمِنۢfromبَيْنِهِمْ ۖamong themفَوَيْلٌۭso woeلِّلَّذِينَto those whoظَلَمُوا۟wrongedمِنْfromعَذَابِ(the) punishmentيَوْمٍ(of the) Dayأَلِيمٍpainful٦٥

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.

٤٣:٦٦

هَلْAreيَنظُرُونَthey waitingإِلَّاexceptٱلسَّاعَةَ(for) the Hourأَنthatتَأْتِيَهُمit should come on themبَغْتَةًۭsuddenlyوَهُمْwhile theyلَا(do) notيَشْعُرُونَperceive٦٦

Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?

٤٣:٦٧

ٱلْأَخِلَّآءُFriendsيَوْمَئِذٍۭthat Dayبَعْضُهُمْsome of themلِبَعْضٍto othersعَدُوٌّ(will be) enemiesإِلَّاexceptٱلْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous٦٧

Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous

٤٣:٦٨

يَـٰعِبَادِO My slavesلَاNoخَوْفٌfearعَلَيْكُمُon youٱلْيَوْمَthis Dayوَلَآand notأَنتُمْyouتَحْزَنُونَwill grieve٦٨

[To whom Allāh will say], "O My servants, no fear will there be concerning you this Day, nor will you grieve,

٤٣:٦٩

ٱلَّذِينَThose whoءَامَنُوا۟believedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاin Our Versesوَكَانُوا۟and wereمُسْلِمِينَsubmissive٦٩

[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims.

٤٣:٧٠

ٱدْخُلُوا۟EnterٱلْجَنَّةَParadiseأَنتُمْyouوَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْand your spousesتُحْبَرُونَdelighted٧٠

Enter Paradise, you and your kinds, delighted."

٤٣:٧١

يُطَافُWill be circulatedعَلَيْهِمfor themبِصِحَافٍۢplatesمِّنofذَهَبٍۢgoldوَأَكْوَابٍۢ ۖand cupsوَفِيهَاAnd thereinمَا(is) whatتَشْتَهِيهِdesiresٱلْأَنفُسُthe soulsوَتَلَذُّand delightsٱلْأَعْيُنُ ۖthe eyesوَأَنتُمْand youفِيهَاthereinخَـٰلِدُونَwill abide forever٧١

Circulated among them will be plates and vessels of gold. And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally.

٤٣:٧٢

وَتِلْكَAnd thisٱلْجَنَّةُ(is) the Paradiseٱلَّتِىٓwhichأُورِثْتُمُوهَاyou are made to inheritبِمَاfor whatكُنتُمْyou used toتَعْمَلُونَdo٧٢

And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.

٤٣:٧٣

لَكُمْFor youفِيهَاthereinفَـٰكِهَةٌۭ(are) fruitsكَثِيرَةٌۭabundantمِّنْهَاfrom itتَأْكُلُونَyou will eat٧٣

For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat.

٤٣:٧٤

إِنَّIndeedٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsفِى(will be) inعَذَابِ(the) punishmentجَهَنَّمَ(of) Hellخَـٰلِدُونَabiding forever٧٤

Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.

٤٣:٧٥

لَاNotيُفَتَّرُwill it subsideعَنْهُمْfor themوَهُمْand theyفِيهِin itمُبْلِسُونَ(will) despair٧٥

It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.

٤٣:٧٦

وَمَاAnd notظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْWe wronged themوَلَـٰكِنbutكَانُوا۟they wereهُمُthemselvesٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَwrongdoers٧٦

And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

٤٣:٧٧

وَنَادَوْا۟And they will callيَـٰمَـٰلِكُO MalikلِيَقْضِLet put an endعَلَيْنَاto usرَبُّكَ ۖyour LordقَالَHe (will) sayإِنَّكُمIndeed, youمَّـٰكِثُونَ(will) remain٧٧

And they will call, "O Mālik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Indeed, you will remain."

٤٣:٧٨

لَقَدْCertainlyجِئْنَـٰكُمWe have brought youبِٱلْحَقِّthe truthوَلَـٰكِنَّbutأَكْثَرَكُمْmost of youلِلْحَقِّto the truthكَـٰرِهُونَ(are) averse٧٨

We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.

٤٣:٧٩

أَمْOrأَبْرَمُوٓا۟have they determinedأَمْرًۭاan affairفَإِنَّاThen indeed, Weمُبْرِمُونَ(are) determined٧٩

Or have they devised [some] affair? But indeed, We are devising [a plan].

٤٣:٨٠

أَمْOrيَحْسَبُونَ(do) they thinkأَنَّاthat Weلَا(can) notنَسْمَعُhearسِرَّهُمْtheir secret(s)وَنَجْوَىٰهُم ۚand their private counsel(s)بَلَىٰNayوَرُسُلُنَاand Our Messengersلَدَيْهِمْwith themيَكْتُبُونَare recording٨٠

Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers [i.e., angels] are with them recording.

٤٣:٨١

قُلْSayإِنIfكَانَhadلِلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousوَلَدٌۭa sonفَأَنَا۠Then, Iأَوَّلُ(would be the) firstٱلْعَـٰبِدِينَ(of) the worshippers٨١

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."1

٤٣:٨٢

سُبْحَـٰنَGlory beرَبِّ(to the) Lordٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthرَبِّ(the) Lordٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Throneعَمَّاabove whatيَصِفُونَthey ascribe٨٢

Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.

٤٣:٨٣

فَذَرْهُمْSo leave themيَخُوضُوا۟(to) converse vainlyوَيَلْعَبُوا۟and playحَتَّىٰuntilيُلَـٰقُوا۟they meetيَوْمَهُمُtheir Dayٱلَّذِىwhichيُوعَدُونَthey are promised٨٣

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised.

٤٣:٨٤

وَهُوَAnd Heٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoفِى(is) inٱلسَّمَآءِthe heaven إِلَـٰهٌۭGodوَفِىand inٱلْأَرْضِthe earth إِلَـٰهٌۭ ۚGodوَهُوَAnd Heٱلْحَكِيمُ(is) the All-Wiseٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower٨٤

And it is He [i.e., Allāh] who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity. And He is the Wise, the Knowing.

٤٣:٨٥

وَتَبَارَكَAnd blessed (is)ٱلَّذِىthe One Who لَهُۥto Whomمُلْكُ(belongs the) dominionٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthوَمَاand whateverبَيْنَهُمَا(is) between both of themوَعِندَهُۥand with Himعِلْمُ(is the) knowledgeٱلسَّاعَةِ(of) the Hourوَإِلَيْهِand to Himتُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned٨٥

And blessed is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and with whom is knowledge of the Hour and to whom you will be returned.

٤٣:٨٦

وَلَاAnd notيَمْلِكُhave powerٱلَّذِينَthose whomيَدْعُونَthey invokeمِنbesides Himدُونِهِbesides Himٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ(for) the intercessionإِلَّاexceptمَنwhoشَهِدَtestifiesبِٱلْحَقِّto the truthوَهُمْand theyيَعْلَمُونَknow٨٦

And those they invoke besides Him do not possess [power of] intercession; but only those who testify to the truth [can benefit], and they know.

٤٣:٨٧

وَلَئِنAnd ifسَأَلْتَهُمyou ask themمَّنْwhoخَلَقَهُمْcreated themلَيَقُولُنَّthey will certainly sayٱللَّهُ ۖAllahفَأَنَّىٰThen howيُؤْفَكُونَare they deluded٨٧

And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, "Allāh." So how are they deluded?

٤٣:٨٨

وَقِيلِهِۦAnd his sayingيَـٰرَبِّO my LordإِنَّIndeedهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِtheseقَوْمٌۭ(are) a peopleلَّا(who do) notيُؤْمِنُونَbelieve٨٨

And [Allāh acknowledges] his saying, "O my Lord, indeed these are a people who do not believe."

٤٣:٨٩

فَٱصْفَحْSo turn awayعَنْهُمْfrom themوَقُلْand sayسَلَـٰمٌۭ ۚPeaceفَسَوْفَBut soonيَعْلَمُونَthey will know٨٩

So turn aside from them and say, "Peace."1 But they are going to know.
