بسملة

بِسْمِ In (the) name ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

٤٣:١

حمٓ Ha Meem ١ (1)

Ḥā, Meem.

٤٣:٢

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ By the Book ٱلْمُبِينِ the clear ٢ (2)

By the clear Book,

٤٣:٣

إِنَّا Indeed, We جَعَلْنَـٰهُ (have) made it قُرْءَٰنًا a Quran عَرَبِيًّۭا (in) Arabic لَّعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَعْقِلُونَ understand ٣ (3)

Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.

٤٣:٤

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it فِىٓ (is) in أُمِّ (the) Mother ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book لَدَيْنَا with Us لَعَلِىٌّ surely exalted حَكِيمٌ full of wisdom ٤ (4)

And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.

٤٣:٥

أَفَنَضْرِبُ Then should We take away عَنكُمُ from you ٱلذِّكْرَ the Reminder صَفْحًا disregarding (you) أَن because كُنتُمْ you are قَوْمًۭا a people مُّسْرِفِينَ transgressing ٥ (5)

Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?

٤٣:٦

وَكَمْ And how many أَرْسَلْنَا We sent مِن of نَّبِىٍّۢ a Prophet فِى among ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former (people) ٦ (6)

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,

٤٣:٧

وَمَا And not يَأْتِيهِم came to them مِّن any Prophet نَّبِىٍّ any Prophet إِلَّا but كَانُوا۟ they used to بِهِۦ mock at him يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ mock at him ٧ (7)

But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

٤٣:٨

فَأَهْلَكْنَآ Then We destroyed أَشَدَّ stronger مِنْهُم than them بَطْشًۭا (in) power وَمَضَىٰ and has passed مَثَلُ (the) example ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ (of) the former (people) ٨ (8)

And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.

٤٣:٩

وَلَئِن And if سَأَلْتَهُم you ask them مَّنْ Who خَلَقَ created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth لَيَقُولُنَّ They will surely say خَلَقَهُنَّ Created them ٱلْعَزِيزُ the All-Mighty ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٩ (9)

And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"

٤٣:١٠

ٱلَّذِى The One Who جَعَلَ made لَكُمُ for you ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth مَهْدًۭا a bed وَجَعَلَ and made لَكُمْ for you فِيهَا therein سُبُلًۭا roads لَّعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَهْتَدُونَ (be) guided ١٠ (10)

[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided

٤٣:١١

وَٱلَّذِى And the One Who نَزَّلَ sends down مِنَ from ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky مَآءًۢ water بِقَدَرٍۢ in (due) measure فَأَنشَرْنَا then We revive بِهِۦ with it بَلْدَةًۭ a land مَّيْتًۭا ۚ dead كَذَٰلِكَ thus تُخْرَجُونَ you will be brought forth ١١ (11)

And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -

٤٣:١٢

وَٱلَّذِى And the One Who خَلَقَ created ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَ the pairs كُلَّهَا all of them وَجَعَلَ and made لَكُم for you مِّنَ [of] ٱلْفُلْكِ the ships وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ and the cattle مَا what تَرْكَبُونَ you ride ١٢ (12)

And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount

٤٣:١٣

لِتَسْتَوُۥا۟ That you may sit firmly عَلَىٰ on ظُهُورِهِۦ their backs ثُمَّ then تَذْكُرُوا۟ remember نِعْمَةَ (the) favor رَبِّكُمْ (of) your Lord إِذَا when ٱسْتَوَيْتُمْ you sit firmly عَلَيْهِ on them وَتَقُولُوا۟ and say سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be (to) ٱلَّذِى the One Who سَخَّرَ (has) subjected لَنَا to us هَـٰذَا this وَمَا and not كُنَّا we were لَهُۥ of it مُقْرِنِينَ capable ١٣ (13)

That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.

٤٣:١٤

وَإِنَّآ And indeed, we إِلَىٰ to رَبِّنَا our Lord لَمُنقَلِبُونَ will surely return ١٤ (14)

And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."

٤٣:١٥

وَجَعَلُوا۟ But they attribute لَهُۥ to Him مِنْ from عِبَادِهِۦ His slaves جُزْءًا ۚ a portion إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ man لَكَفُورٌۭ surely (is) clearly ungrateful مُّبِينٌ surely (is) clearly ungrateful ١٥ (15)

But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.

٤٣:١٦

أَمِ Or ٱتَّخَذَ has He taken مِمَّا of what يَخْلُقُ He has created بَنَاتٍۢ daughters وَأَصْفَىٰكُم and He has chosen (for) you بِٱلْبَنِينَ sons ١٦ (16)

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?

٤٣:١٧

وَإِذَا And when بُشِّرَ is given good news أَحَدُهُم (to) one of them بِمَا of what ضَرَبَ he sets up لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ for the Most Gracious مَثَلًۭا (as) a likeness ظَلَّ becomes وَجْهُهُۥ his face مُسْوَدًّۭا dark وَهُوَ and he كَظِيمٌ (is) filled with grief ١٧ (17)

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

٤٣:١٨

أَوَمَن Then (is one) who يُنَشَّؤُا۟ is brought up فِى in ٱلْحِلْيَةِ ornaments وَهُوَ and he فِى in ٱلْخِصَامِ the dispute غَيْرُ (is) not مُبِينٍۢ clear ١٨ (18)

So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allāh]?

٤٣:١٩

وَجَعَلُوا۟ And they made ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ the Angels ٱلَّذِينَ those who هُمْ themselves عِبَـٰدُ (are) slaves ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ (of) the Most Gracious إِنَـٰثًا ۚ females أَشَهِدُوا۟ Did they witness خَلْقَهُمْ ۚ their creation سَتُكْتَبُ Will be recorded شَهَـٰدَتُهُمْ their testimony وَيُسْـَٔلُونَ and they will be questioned ١٩ (19)

And they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

٤٣:٢٠

وَقَالُوا۟ And they say لَوْ If شَآءَ had willed ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ the Most Gracious مَا we would not have worshipped them عَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗ we would not have worshipped them مَّا Not لَهُم they have بِذَٰلِكَ about that مِنْ any عِلْمٍ ۖ knowledge إِنْ Nothing هُمْ they (do) إِلَّا but يَخْرُصُونَ lie ٢٠ (20)

And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but misjudging.

٤٣:٢١

أَمْ Or ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ have We given them كِتَـٰبًۭا a book مِّن before it قَبْلِهِۦ before it فَهُم so they بِهِۦ to it مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ (are) holding fast ٢١ (21)

Or have We given them a book before it [i.e., the Qur’ān] to which they are adhering?

٤٣:٢٢

بَلْ Nay قَالُوٓا۟ they say إِنَّا Indeed, we وَجَدْنَآ [we] found ءَابَآءَنَا our forefathers عَلَىٰٓ upon أُمَّةٍۢ a religion وَإِنَّا and indeed, we عَلَىٰٓ on ءَاثَـٰرِهِم their footsteps مُّهْتَدُونَ (are) guided ٢٢ (22)

Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."

٤٣:٢٣

وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus مَآ not أَرْسَلْنَا We sent مِن before you قَبْلِكَ before you فِى in قَرْيَةٍۢ a town مِّن any نَّذِيرٍ warner إِلَّا except قَالَ said مُتْرَفُوهَآ (the) wealthy ones of it إِنَّا Indeed, we وَجَدْنَآ [we] found ءَابَآءَنَا our forefathers عَلَىٰٓ on أُمَّةٍۢ a religion وَإِنَّا and indeed, we عَلَىٰٓ [on] ءَاثَـٰرِهِم their footsteps مُّقْتَدُونَ (are) following ٢٣ (23)

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."

٤٣:٢٤

۞ قَـٰلَ He said أَوَلَوْ Even if جِئْتُكُم I brought you بِأَهْدَىٰ better guidance مِمَّا than what وَجَدتُّمْ you found عَلَيْهِ on it ءَابَآءَكُمْ ۖ your forefathers قَالُوٓا۟ They said إِنَّا Indeed, we بِمَآ with what أُرْسِلْتُم you are sent بِهِۦ with [it] كَـٰفِرُونَ (are) disbelievers ٢٤ (24)

[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."

٤٣:٢٥

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا So We took retribution مِنْهُمْ ۖ from them فَٱنظُرْ Then see كَيْفَ how كَانَ was عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ (of) the deniers ٢٥ (25)

So We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.

٤٣:٢٦

وَإِذْ And when قَالَ Ibrahim Said إِبْرَٰهِيمُ Ibrahim Said لِأَبِيهِ to his father وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ and his people إِنَّنِى Indeed, I (am) بَرَآءٌۭ disassociated مِّمَّا from what تَعْبُدُونَ you worship ٢٦ (26)

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship

٤٣:٢٧

إِلَّا Except ٱلَّذِى the One Who فَطَرَنِى created me فَإِنَّهُۥ and indeed, He سَيَهْدِينِ will guide me ٢٧ (27)

Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."

٤٣:٢٨

وَجَعَلَهَا And he made it كَلِمَةًۢ a word بَاقِيَةًۭ lasting فِى among عَقِبِهِۦ his descendents لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَرْجِعُونَ return ٢٨ (28)

And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].

٤٣:٢٩

بَلْ Nay مَتَّعْتُ I gave enjoyment هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ (to) these وَءَابَآءَهُمْ and their forefathers حَتَّىٰ until جَآءَهُمُ came to them ٱلْحَقُّ the truth وَرَسُولٌۭ and a Messenger مُّبِينٌۭ clear ٢٩ (29)

However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

٤٣:٣٠

وَلَمَّا And when جَآءَهُمُ came to them ٱلْحَقُّ the truth قَالُوا۟ they said هَـٰذَا This سِحْرٌۭ (is) magic وَإِنَّا and indeed, we بِهِۦ of it كَـٰفِرُونَ (are) disbelievers ٣٠ (30)

But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."

٤٣:٣١

وَقَالُوا۟ And they say لَوْلَا Why not نُزِّلَ was sent down هَـٰذَا this ٱلْقُرْءَانُ the Quran عَلَىٰ to رَجُلٍۢ a man مِّنَ from ٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِ the two towns عَظِيمٍ great ٣١ (31)

And they said, "Why was this Qur’ān not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"1

٤٣:٣٢

أَهُمْ Do they يَقْسِمُونَ distribute رَحْمَتَ (the) Mercy رَبِّكَ ۚ (of) your Lord نَحْنُ We قَسَمْنَا [We] distribute بَيْنَهُم among them مَّعِيشَتَهُمْ their livelihood فِى in ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ the life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ (of) the world وَرَفَعْنَا and We raise بَعْضَهُمْ some of them فَوْقَ above بَعْضٍۢ others دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ (in) degrees لِّيَتَّخِذَ so that may take بَعْضُهُم some of them بَعْضًۭا others سُخْرِيًّۭا ۗ (for) service وَرَحْمَتُ But (the) Mercy رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord خَيْرٌۭ (is) better مِّمَّا than what يَجْمَعُونَ they accumulate ٣٢ (32)

Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.

٤٣:٣٣

وَلَوْلَآ And if not أَن that يَكُونَ (would) become ٱلنَّاسُ [the] mankind أُمَّةًۭ a community وَٰحِدَةًۭ one لَّجَعَلْنَا We (would have) made لِمَن for (one) who يَكْفُرُ disbelieves بِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ in the Most Gracious لِبُيُوتِهِمْ for their houses سُقُفًۭا roofs مِّن of فِضَّةٍۢ silver وَمَعَارِجَ and stairways عَلَيْهَا upon which يَظْهَرُونَ they mount ٣٣ (33)

And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount.

٤٣:٣٤

وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْ And for their houses أَبْوَٰبًۭا doors وَسُرُرًا and couches عَلَيْهَا upon which يَتَّكِـُٔونَ they recline ٣٤ (34)

And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline

٤٣:٣٥

وَزُخْرُفًۭا ۚ And ornaments of gold وَإِن And not (is) كُلُّ all ذَٰلِكَ that لَمَّا but مَتَـٰعُ an enjoyment ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ (of) the life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ (of) the world وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ And the Hereafter عِندَ with رَبِّكَ your Lord لِلْمُتَّقِينَ (is) for the righteous ٣٥ (35)

And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

٤٣:٣٦

وَمَن And whoever يَعْشُ turns away عَن from ذِكْرِ (the) remembrance ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ (of) the Most Gracious نُقَيِّضْ We appoint لَهُۥ for him شَيْطَـٰنًۭا a devil فَهُوَ then he لَهُۥ (is) to him قَرِينٌۭ a companion ٣٦ (36)

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.

٤٣:٣٧

وَإِنَّهُمْ And indeed, they لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْ surely, turn them عَنِ from ٱلسَّبِيلِ the Path وَيَحْسَبُونَ and they think أَنَّهُم that they مُّهْتَدُونَ (are) guided ٣٧ (37)

And indeed, they [i.e., the devils] avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided

٤٣:٣٨

حَتَّىٰٓ Until إِذَا when جَآءَنَا he comes to Us قَالَ he says يَـٰلَيْتَ O would that بَيْنِى between me وَبَيْنَكَ and between you بُعْدَ (were the) distance ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ (of) the East and the West فَبِئْسَ How wretched is ٱلْقَرِينُ the companion ٣٨ (38)

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "How I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west; and what a wretched companion."

٤٣:٣٩

وَلَن And never يَنفَعَكُمُ will benefit you ٱلْيَوْمَ the Day إِذ when ظَّلَمْتُمْ you have wronged أَنَّكُمْ that you فِى (will be) in ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment مُشْتَرِكُونَ sharing ٣٩ (39)

And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.

٤٣:٤٠

أَفَأَنتَ Then can you تُسْمِعُ cause to hear ٱلصُّمَّ the deaf أَوْ or تَهْدِى guide ٱلْعُمْىَ the blind وَمَن and (one) who كَانَ is فِى in ضَلَـٰلٍۢ an error مُّبِينٍۢ clear ٤٠ (40)

Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muḥammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?

٤٣:٤١

فَإِمَّا And whether نَذْهَبَنَّ We take you away بِكَ We take you away فَإِنَّا then indeed, We مِنْهُم from them مُّنتَقِمُونَ (will) take retribution ٤١ (41)

And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.

٤٣:٤٢

أَوْ Or نُرِيَنَّكَ We show you ٱلَّذِى that which وَعَدْنَـٰهُمْ We have promised them فَإِنَّا then indeed, We عَلَيْهِم over them مُّقْتَدِرُونَ have full power ٤٢ (42)

Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.

٤٣:٤٣

فَٱسْتَمْسِكْ So hold fast بِٱلَّذِىٓ to that which أُوحِىَ is revealed إِلَيْكَ ۖ to you إِنَّكَ Indeed, you عَلَىٰ (are) on صِرَٰطٍۢ a Path مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ Straight ٤٣ (43)

So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.

٤٣:٤٤

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it لَذِكْرٌۭ (is) surely, a Reminder لَّكَ for you وَلِقَوْمِكَ ۖ and your people وَسَوْفَ and soon تُسْـَٔلُونَ you will be questioned ٤٤ (44)

And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.

٤٣:٤٥

وَسْـَٔلْ And ask مَنْ (those) whom أَرْسَلْنَا We sent مِن before you قَبْلِكَ before you مِن of رُّسُلِنَآ Our Messengers أَجَعَلْنَا did We make مِن besides دُونِ besides ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ءَالِهَةًۭ gods يُعْبَدُونَ to be worshipped ٤٥ (45)

And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?

٤٣:٤٦

وَلَقَدْ And certainly أَرْسَلْنَا We sent مُوسَىٰ Musa بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ with Our Signs إِلَىٰ to فِرْعَوْنَ Firaun وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ and his chiefs فَقَالَ and he said إِنِّى Indeed, I am رَسُولُ a Messenger رَبِّ (of the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٤٦ (46)

And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."

٤٣:٤٧

فَلَمَّا But when جَآءَهُم he came to them بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ with Our Signs إِذَا behold هُم They مِّنْهَا at them يَضْحَكُونَ laughed ٤٧ (47)

But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.

٤٣:٤٨

وَمَا And not نُرِيهِم We showed them مِّنْ of ءَايَةٍ a Sign إِلَّا but هِىَ it أَكْبَرُ (was) greater مِنْ than أُخْتِهَا ۖ its sister وَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم and We seized them بِٱلْعَذَابِ with the punishment لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَرْجِعُونَ return ٤٨ (48)

And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].

٤٣:٤٩

وَقَالُوا۟ And they said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَ O ٱلسَّاحِرُ [the] magician ٱدْعُ Invoke لَنَا for us رَبَّكَ your Lord بِمَا by what عَهِدَ He has made covenant عِندَكَ with you إِنَّنَا Indeed, we لَمُهْتَدُونَ (will) surely be guided ٤٩ (49)

And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."

٤٣:٥٠

فَلَمَّا But when كَشَفْنَا We removed عَنْهُمُ from them ٱلْعَذَابَ the punishment إِذَا behold هُمْ They يَنكُثُونَ broke (their word) ٥٠ (50)

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.

٤٣:٥١

وَنَادَىٰ And called out فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun فِى among قَوْمِهِۦ his people قَالَ he said يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people أَلَيْسَ Is not لِى for me مُلْكُ (the) kingdom مِصْرَ (of) Egypt وَهَـٰذِهِ and these ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ [the] rivers تَجْرِى flowing مِن underneath me تَحْتِىٓ ۖ underneath me أَفَلَا Then do not تُبْصِرُونَ you see ٥١ (51)

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?

٤٣:٥٢

أَمْ Or أَنَا۠ am I خَيْرٌۭ better مِّنْ than هَـٰذَا this ٱلَّذِى one who هُوَ he مَهِينٌۭ (is) insignificant وَلَا and hardly يَكَادُ and hardly يُبِينُ clear ٥٢ (52)

Or am I [not] better than this one [i.e., Moses] who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?

٤٣:٥٣

فَلَوْلَآ Then why not أُلْقِىَ are placed عَلَيْهِ on him أَسْوِرَةٌۭ bracelets مِّن of ذَهَبٍ gold أَوْ or جَآءَ come مَعَهُ with him ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ the Angels مُقْتَرِنِينَ accompanying (him) ٥٣ (53)

Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"

٤٣:٥٤

فَٱسْتَخَفَّ So he bluffed قَوْمَهُۥ his people فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚ and they obeyed him إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they كَانُوا۟ were قَوْمًۭا a people فَـٰسِقِينَ defiantly disobedient ٥٤ (54)

So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allāh].

٤٣:٥٥

فَلَمَّآ So when ءَاسَفُونَا they angered Us ٱنتَقَمْنَا We took retribution مِنْهُمْ from them فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ and We drowned them أَجْمَعِينَ all ٥٥ (55)

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

٤٣:٥٦

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ And We made them سَلَفًۭا a precedent وَمَثَلًۭا and an example لِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَ for the later (generations) ٥٦ (56)

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.

٤٣:٥٧

۞ وَلَمَّا And when ضُرِبَ is presented ٱبْنُ (the) son مَرْيَمَ (of) Maryam مَثَلًا (as) an example إِذَا behold قَوْمُكَ Your people مِنْهُ about it يَصِدُّونَ laughed aloud ٥٧ (57)

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.

٤٣:٥٨

وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they said ءَأَـٰلِهَتُنَا Are our gods خَيْرٌ better أَمْ or هُوَ ۚ he مَا Not ضَرَبُوهُ they present it لَكَ to you إِلَّا except جَدَلًۢا ۚ (for) argument بَلْ Nay هُمْ they قَوْمٌ (are) a people خَصِمُونَ argumentative ٥٨ (58)

And they said, "Are our gods better, or is he?"1 They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.

٤٣:٥٩

إِنْ Not هُوَ he إِلَّا (was) except عَبْدٌ a slave أَنْعَمْنَا We bestowed Our favor عَلَيْهِ on him وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ and We made him مَثَلًۭا an example لِّبَنِىٓ for (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ for (the) Children of Israel ٥٩ (59)

He [i.e., Jesus] was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

٤٣:٦٠

وَلَوْ And if نَشَآءُ We willed لَجَعَلْنَا surely We (could have) made مِنكُم among you مَّلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ Angels فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth يَخْلُفُونَ succeeding ٦٠ (60)

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another]1 on the earth.

٤٣:٦١

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it لَعِلْمٌۭ surely (is) a knowledge لِّلسَّاعَةِ of the Hour فَلَا So (do) not تَمْتَرُنَّ (be) doubtful بِهَا about it وَٱتَّبِعُونِ ۚ and follow Me هَـٰذَا This صِرَٰطٌۭ (is the) Path مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ Straight ٦١ (61)

And indeed, he [i.e., Jesus] will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.

٤٣:٦٢

وَلَا And (let) not يَصُدَّنَّكُمُ avert you ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ ۖ the Shaitaan إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he لَكُمْ (is) for you عَدُوٌّۭ an enemy مُّبِينٌۭ clear ٦٢ (62)

And never let Satan avert you. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

٤٣:٦٣

وَلَمَّا And when جَآءَ came عِيسَىٰ Isa بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ with clear proofs قَالَ he said قَدْ Verily جِئْتُكُم I have come to you بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ with wisdom وَلِأُبَيِّنَ and that I make clear لَكُم to you بَعْضَ some ٱلَّذِى (of) that which تَخْتَلِفُونَ you differ فِيهِ ۖ in it فَٱتَّقُوا۟ So fear ٱللَّهَ Allah وَأَطِيعُونِ and obey me ٦٣ (63)

And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, "I have come to you with wisdom [i.e., prophethood] and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ, so fear Allāh and obey me.

٤٣:٦٤

إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah هُوَ He رَبِّى (is) my Lord وَرَبُّكُمْ and your Lord فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ so worship Him هَـٰذَا This صِرَٰطٌۭ (is) a Path مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ Straight ٦٤ (64)

Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path."

٤٣:٦٥

فَٱخْتَلَفَ But differed ٱلْأَحْزَابُ the factions مِنۢ from بَيْنِهِمْ ۖ among them فَوَيْلٌۭ so woe لِّلَّذِينَ to those who ظَلَمُوا۟ wronged مِنْ from عَذَابِ (the) punishment يَوْمٍ (of the) Day أَلِيمٍ painful ٦٥ (65)

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.

٤٣:٦٦

هَلْ Are يَنظُرُونَ they waiting إِلَّا except ٱلسَّاعَةَ (for) the Hour أَن that تَأْتِيَهُم it should come on them بَغْتَةًۭ suddenly وَهُمْ while they لَا (do) not يَشْعُرُونَ perceive ٦٦ (66)

Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?

٤٣:٦٧

ٱلْأَخِلَّآءُ Friends يَوْمَئِذٍۭ that Day بَعْضُهُمْ some of them لِبَعْضٍ to others عَدُوٌّ (will be) enemies إِلَّا except ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous ٦٧ (67)

Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous

٤٣:٦٨

يَـٰعِبَادِ O My slaves لَا No خَوْفٌ fear عَلَيْكُمُ on you ٱلْيَوْمَ this Day وَلَآ and not أَنتُمْ you تَحْزَنُونَ will grieve ٦٨ (68)

[To whom Allāh will say], "O My servants, no fear will there be concerning you this Day, nor will you grieve,

٤٣:٦٩

ٱلَّذِينَ Those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا in Our Verses وَكَانُوا۟ and were مُسْلِمِينَ submissive ٦٩ (69)

[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims.

٤٣:٧٠

ٱدْخُلُوا۟ Enter ٱلْجَنَّةَ Paradise أَنتُمْ you وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ and your spouses تُحْبَرُونَ delighted ٧٠ (70)

Enter Paradise, you and your kinds, delighted."

٤٣:٧١

يُطَافُ Will be circulated عَلَيْهِم for them بِصِحَافٍۢ plates مِّن of ذَهَبٍۢ gold وَأَكْوَابٍۢ ۖ and cups وَفِيهَا And therein مَا (is) what تَشْتَهِيهِ desires ٱلْأَنفُسُ the souls وَتَلَذُّ and delights ٱلْأَعْيُنُ ۖ the eyes وَأَنتُمْ and you فِيهَا therein خَـٰلِدُونَ will abide forever ٧١ (71)

Circulated among them will be plates and vessels of gold. And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally.

٤٣:٧٢

وَتِلْكَ And this ٱلْجَنَّةُ (is) the Paradise ٱلَّتِىٓ which أُورِثْتُمُوهَا you are made to inherit بِمَا for what كُنتُمْ you used to تَعْمَلُونَ do ٧٢ (72)

And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.

٤٣:٧٣

لَكُمْ For you فِيهَا therein فَـٰكِهَةٌۭ (are) fruits كَثِيرَةٌۭ abundant مِّنْهَا from it تَأْكُلُونَ you will eat ٧٣ (73)

For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat.

٤٣:٧٤

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ the criminals فِى (will be) in عَذَابِ (the) punishment جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell خَـٰلِدُونَ abiding forever ٧٤ (74)

Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.

٤٣:٧٥

لَا Not يُفَتَّرُ will it subside عَنْهُمْ for them وَهُمْ and they فِيهِ in it مُبْلِسُونَ (will) despair ٧٥ (75)

It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.

٤٣:٧٦

وَمَا And not ظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْ We wronged them وَلَـٰكِن but كَانُوا۟ they were هُمُ themselves ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ wrongdoers ٧٦ (76)

And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

٤٣:٧٧

وَنَادَوْا۟ And they will call يَـٰمَـٰلِكُ O Malik لِيَقْضِ Let put an end عَلَيْنَا to us رَبُّكَ ۖ your Lord قَالَ He (will) say إِنَّكُم Indeed, you مَّـٰكِثُونَ (will) remain ٧٧ (77)

And they will call, "O Mālik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Indeed, you will remain."

٤٣:٧٨

لَقَدْ Certainly جِئْنَـٰكُم We have brought you بِٱلْحَقِّ the truth وَلَـٰكِنَّ but أَكْثَرَكُمْ most of you لِلْحَقِّ to the truth كَـٰرِهُونَ (are) averse ٧٨ (78)

We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.

٤٣:٧٩

أَمْ Or أَبْرَمُوٓا۟ have they determined أَمْرًۭا an affair فَإِنَّا Then indeed, We مُبْرِمُونَ (are) determined ٧٩ (79)

Or have they devised [some] affair? But indeed, We are devising [a plan].

٤٣:٨٠

أَمْ Or يَحْسَبُونَ (do) they think أَنَّا that We لَا (can) not نَسْمَعُ hear سِرَّهُمْ their secret(s) وَنَجْوَىٰهُم ۚ and their private counsel(s) بَلَىٰ Nay وَرُسُلُنَا and Our Messengers لَدَيْهِمْ with them يَكْتُبُونَ are recording ٨٠ (80)

Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers [i.e., angels] are with them recording.

٤٣:٨١

قُلْ Say إِن If كَانَ had لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious وَلَدٌۭ a son فَأَنَا۠ Then, I أَوَّلُ (would be the) first ٱلْعَـٰبِدِينَ (of) the worshippers ٨١ (81)

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."1

٤٣:٨٢

سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be رَبِّ (to the) Lord ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth رَبِّ (the) Lord ٱلْعَرْشِ (of) the Throne عَمَّا above what يَصِفُونَ they ascribe ٨٢ (82)

Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.

٤٣:٨٣

فَذَرْهُمْ So leave them يَخُوضُوا۟ (to) converse vainly وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ and play حَتَّىٰ until يُلَـٰقُوا۟ they meet يَوْمَهُمُ their Day ٱلَّذِى which يُوعَدُونَ they are promised ٨٣ (83)

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised.

٤٣:٨٤

وَهُوَ And He ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَآءِ the heaven إِلَـٰهٌۭ God وَفِى and in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth إِلَـٰهٌۭ ۚ God وَهُوَ And He ٱلْحَكِيمُ (is) the All-Wise ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٨٤ (84)

And it is He [i.e., Allāh] who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity. And He is the Wise, the Knowing.

٤٣:٨٥

وَتَبَارَكَ And blessed (is) ٱلَّذِى the One Who لَهُۥ to Whom مُلْكُ (belongs the) dominion ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth وَمَا and whatever بَيْنَهُمَا (is) between both of them وَعِندَهُۥ and with Him عِلْمُ (is the) knowledge ٱلسَّاعَةِ (of) the Hour وَإِلَيْهِ and to Him تُرْجَعُونَ you will be returned ٨٥ (85)

And blessed is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and with whom is knowledge of the Hour and to whom you will be returned.

٤٣:٨٦

وَلَا And not يَمْلِكُ have power ٱلَّذِينَ those whom يَدْعُونَ they invoke مِن besides Him دُونِهِ besides Him ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ (for) the intercession إِلَّا except مَن who شَهِدَ testifies بِٱلْحَقِّ to the truth وَهُمْ and they يَعْلَمُونَ know ٨٦ (86)

And those they invoke besides Him do not possess [power of] intercession; but only those who testify to the truth [can benefit], and they know.

٤٣:٨٧

وَلَئِن And if سَأَلْتَهُم you ask them مَّنْ who خَلَقَهُمْ created them لَيَقُولُنَّ they will certainly say ٱللَّهُ ۖ Allah فَأَنَّىٰ Then how يُؤْفَكُونَ are they deluded ٨٧ (87)

And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, "Allāh." So how are they deluded?

٤٣:٨٨

وَقِيلِهِۦ And his saying يَـٰرَبِّ O my Lord إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ these قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people لَّا (who do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ believe ٨٨ (88)

And [Allāh acknowledges] his saying, "O my Lord, indeed these are a people who do not believe."

٤٣:٨٩

فَٱصْفَحْ So turn away عَنْهُمْ from them وَقُلْ and say سَلَـٰمٌۭ ۚ Peace فَسَوْفَ But soon يَعْلَمُونَ they will know ٨٩ (89)

So turn aside from them and say, "Peace."1 But they are going to know.
