بسملة

بِسْمِIn (the) nameٱللَّهِ(of) Allahٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

٦٨:١

نٓ ۚNunوَٱلْقَلَمِBy the penوَمَاand whatيَسْطُرُونَthey write١

Nūn. By the pen and what they inscribe,

٦٨:٢

مَآNotأَنتَyou (are)بِنِعْمَةِby (the) Graceرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordبِمَجْنُونٍۢa madman٢

You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.

٦٨:٣

وَإِنَّAnd indeedلَكَfor youلَأَجْرًاsurely (is) a rewardغَيْرَwithoutمَمْنُونٍۢend٣

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.

٦٨:٤

وَإِنَّكَAnd indeed, youلَعَلَىٰsurely (are)خُلُقٍ(of) a moral characterعَظِيمٍۢgreat٤

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

٦٨:٥

فَسَتُبْصِرُSo you will seeوَيُبْصِرُونَand they will see٥

So you will see and they will see.

٦٨:٦

بِأَييِّكُمُWhich of youٱلْمَفْتُونُ(is) the afflicted one٦

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].

٦٨:٧

إِنَّIndeedرَبَّكَyour LordهُوَHeأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِمَنof (he) whoضَلَّhas strayedعَنfromسَبِيلِهِۦHis wayوَهُوَand Heأَعْلَمُ(is) most knowingبِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَof the guided ones٧

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

٦٨:٨

فَلَاSo (do) notتُطِعِobeyٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniers٨

Then do not obey the deniers.

٦٨:٩

وَدُّوا۟They wishلَوْthatتُدْهِنُyou should compromiseفَيُدْهِنُونَso they would compromise٩

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].

٦٨:١٠

وَلَاAnd (do) notتُطِعْobeyكُلَّeveryحَلَّافٍۢhabitual swearerمَّهِينٍworthless١٠

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

٦٨:١١

هَمَّازٍۢDefamerمَّشَّآءٍۭgoing aboutبِنَمِيمٍۢwith malicious gossip١١

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -

٦٨:١٢

مَّنَّاعٍۢA preventerلِّلْخَيْرِof (the) goodمُعْتَدٍtransgressorأَثِيمٍsinful١٢

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

٦٨:١٣

عُتُلٍّۭCruelبَعْدَafterذَٰلِكَ(all) thatزَنِيمٍutterly useless١٣

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

٦٨:١٤

أَنBecauseكَانَ(he) isذَاa possessorمَالٍۢ(of) wealthوَبَنِينَand children١٤

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

٦٨:١٥

إِذَاWhenتُتْلَىٰare recitedعَلَيْهِto himءَايَـٰتُنَاOur Versesقَالَhe saysأَسَـٰطِيرُStoriesٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)١٥

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

٦٨:١٦

سَنَسِمُهُۥWe will brand himعَلَىonٱلْخُرْطُومِthe snout١٦

We will brand him upon the snout.

٦٨:١٧

إِنَّاIndeed, Weبَلَوْنَـٰهُمْhave tried themكَمَاasبَلَوْنَآWe triedأَصْحَـٰبَ(the) companionsٱلْجَنَّةِ(of) the gardenإِذْwhenأَقْسَمُوا۟they sworeلَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاto pluck its fruitمُصْبِحِينَ(in the) morning١٧

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

٦٨:١٨

وَلَاAnd notيَسْتَثْنُونَmaking exception١٨

Without making exception.

٦٨:١٩

فَطَافَSo there cameعَلَيْهَاupon itطَآئِفٌۭa visitationمِّنfromرَّبِّكَyour Lordوَهُمْwhile theyنَآئِمُونَwere asleep١٩

So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

٦٨:٢٠

فَأَصْبَحَتْSo it becameكَٱلصَّرِيمِas if reaped٢٠

And it became as though reaped.

٦٨:٢١

فَتَنَادَوْا۟And they called one anotherمُصْبِحِينَ(at) morning٢١

And they called one another at morning,

٦٨:٢٢

أَنِThatٱغْدُوا۟Go earlyعَلَىٰtoحَرْثِكُمْyour cropإِنifكُنتُمْyou wouldصَـٰرِمِينَpluck (the) fruit٢٢

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

٦٨:٢٣

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟So they wentوَهُمْwhile theyيَتَخَـٰفَتُونَlowered (their) voices٢٣

So they set out, while lowering their voices,

٦٨:٢٤

أَنThatلَّاNotيَدْخُلَنَّهَاwill enter itٱلْيَوْمَtodayعَلَيْكُمupon youمِّسْكِينٌۭany poor person٢٤

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

٦٨:٢٥

وَغَدَوْا۟And they went earlyعَلَىٰwithحَرْدٍۢdeterminationقَـٰدِرِينَable٢٥

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

٦٨:٢٦

فَلَمَّاBut whenرَأَوْهَاthey saw itقَالُوٓا۟they saidإِنَّاIndeed, weلَضَآلُّونَ(are) surely lost٢٦

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

٦٨:٢٧

بَلْNayنَحْنُWeمَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprived٢٧

Rather, we have been deprived."

٦٨:٢٨

قَالَSaidأَوْسَطُهُمْ(the) most moderate of themأَلَمْDid notأَقُلI tellلَّكُمْyouلَوْلَا'Why notتُسَبِّحُونَyou glorify (Allah)?'٢٨

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"1

٦٨:٢٩

قَالُوا۟They saidسُبْحَـٰنَGlory beرَبِّنَآ(to) our LordإِنَّاIndeed, weكُنَّا[we] wereظَـٰلِمِينَwrongdoers٢٩

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

٦٨:٣٠

فَأَقْبَلَThen approachedبَعْضُهُمْsome of themعَلَىٰtoبَعْضٍۢothersيَتَلَـٰوَمُونَblaming each other٣٠

Then they approached one another, blaming each other.

٦٨:٣١

قَالُوا۟They saidيَـٰوَيْلَنَآO woe to usإِنَّاIndeed, weكُنَّا[we] wereطَـٰغِينَtransgressors٣١

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

٦٨:٣٢

عَسَىٰPerhapsرَبُّنَآour Lordأَن[that]يُبْدِلَنَاwill substitute for usخَيْرًۭاa betterمِّنْهَآthan itإِنَّآIndeed, weإِلَىٰtoرَبِّنَاour Lordرَٰغِبُونَturn devoutly٣٢

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."1

٦٨:٣٣

كَذَٰلِكَSuchٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ(is) the punishmentوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely the punishmentٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterأَكْبَرُ ۚ(is) greaterلَوْifكَانُوا۟theyيَعْلَمُونَknow٣٣

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

٦٨:٣٤

إِنَّIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteousعِندَwithرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordجَنَّـٰتِ(are) Gardensٱلنَّعِيمِ(of) Delight٣٤

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

٦٨:٣٥

أَفَنَجْعَلُThen will We treatٱلْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsكَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَlike the criminals٣٥

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

٦٨:٣٦

مَاWhatلَكُمْ(is) for youكَيْفَHowتَحْكُمُونَ(do) you judge٣٦

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

٦٨:٣٧

أَمْOrلَكُمْ(is) for youكِتَـٰبٌۭa bookفِيهِwhereinتَدْرُسُونَyou learn٣٧

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

٦٨:٣٨

إِنَّIndeedلَكُمْfor youفِيهِin itلَمَاwhatتَخَيَّرُونَyou choose٣٨

That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

٦٨:٣٩

أَمْOrلَكُمْfor youأَيْمَـٰنٌoathsعَلَيْنَاfrom usبَـٰلِغَةٌreachingإِلَىٰtoيَوْمِ(the) Dayٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ(of) the Resurrectionإِنَّindeedلَكُمْfor youلَمَا(is) whatتَحْكُمُونَyou judge٣٩

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

٦٨:٤٠

سَلْهُمْAsk themأَيُّهُمwhich of themبِذَٰلِكَfor thatزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible٤٠

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.

٦٨:٤١

أَمْOrلَهُمْ(are) for themشُرَكَآءُpartnersفَلْيَأْتُوا۟Then let them bringبِشُرَكَآئِهِمْtheir partnersإِنifكَانُوا۟they areصَـٰدِقِينَtruthful٤١

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

٦٨:٤٢

يَوْمَ(The) Dayيُكْشَفُwill be uncoveredعَنfromسَاقٍۢthe shinوَيُدْعَوْنَand they will be calledإِلَىtoٱلسُّجُودِprostrateفَلَاbut notيَسْتَطِيعُونَthey will be able٤٢

The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,

٦٨:٤٣

خَـٰشِعَةًHumbledأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْtheir eyesتَرْهَقُهُمْwill cover themذِلَّةٌۭ ۖhumiliationوَقَدْAnd indeedكَانُوا۟they wereيُدْعَوْنَcalledإِلَىtoٱلسُّجُودِprostrateوَهُمْwhile theyسَـٰلِمُونَ(were) sound٤٣

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

٦٨:٤٤

فَذَرْنِىSo leave Meوَمَنand whoeverيُكَذِّبُdeniesبِهَـٰذَاthisٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖStatementسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمWe will progressively lead themمِّنْfromحَيْثُwhereلَاnotيَعْلَمُونَthey know٤٤

So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.

٦٨:٤٥

وَأُمْلِىAnd I will give respiteلَهُمْ ۚto themإِنَّIndeedكَيْدِىMy planمَتِينٌ(is) firm٤٥

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

٦٨:٤٦

أَمْOrتَسْـَٔلُهُمْyou ask themأَجْرًۭاa paymentفَهُمso theyمِّنfromمَّغْرَمٍۢ(the) debtمُّثْقَلُونَ(are) burdened٤٦

Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

٦٨:٤٧

أَمْOrعِندَهُمُ(is) with themٱلْغَيْبُthe unseenفَهُمْso theyيَكْتُبُونَwrite it٤٧

Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?

٦٨:٤٨

فَٱصْبِرْSo be patientلِحُكْمِfor (the) decisionرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordوَلَاand (do) notتَكُنbeكَصَاحِبِlike (the) companionٱلْحُوتِ(of) the fishإِذْwhenنَادَىٰhe called outوَهُوَwhile heمَكْظُومٌۭ(was) distressed٤٨

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.

٦٨:٤٩

لَّوْلَآIf notأَنthatتَدَٰرَكَهُۥovertook himنِعْمَةٌۭa Favorمِّنfromرَّبِّهِۦhis Lordلَنُبِذَsurely he would have been thrownبِٱلْعَرَآءِonto (the) naked shoreوَهُوَwhile heمَذْمُومٌۭ(was) blamed٤٩

If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.

٦٨:٥٠

فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُBut chose himرَبُّهُۥhis Lordفَجَعَلَهُۥand made himمِنَofٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَthe righteous٥٠

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

٦٨:٥١

وَإِنAnd indeedيَكَادُwould almostٱلَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُوا۟disbelieveلَيُزْلِقُونَكَsurely make you slipبِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْwith their lookلَمَّاwhenسَمِعُوا۟they hearٱلذِّكْرَthe Messageوَيَقُولُونَand they sayإِنَّهُۥIndeed, heلَمَجْنُونٌۭ(is) surely mad٥١

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

٦٨:٥٢

وَمَاAnd notهُوَit (is)إِلَّاbutذِكْرٌۭa Reminderلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَto the worlds٥٢

But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
