Al-'Alaq
العلق
Surah Al-'Alaq (العلق) is chapter 96 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 19 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
96:1
ٱقْرَأْReadiq'raبِٱسْمِin (the) namebi-is'miرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbikaٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhīخَلَقَcreated khalaqa١
Recite in the name of your Lord who created
96:2
خَلَقَHe createdkhalaqaٱلْإِنسَـٰنَmanl-insānaمِنْfromminعَلَقٍa clinging substanceʿalaqin٢
Created man from a clinging substance.
96:3
ٱقْرَأْReadiq'raوَرَبُّكَand your Lordwarabbukaٱلْأَكْرَمُ(is) the Most Generousl-akramu٣
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
96:4
ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoalladhīعَلَّمَtaughtʿallamaبِٱلْقَلَمِby the penbil-qalami٤
Who taught by the pen
96:5
عَلَّمَTaughtʿallamaٱلْإِنسَـٰنَmanl-insānaمَاwhatmāلَمْnotlamيَعْلَمْhe knewyaʿlam٥
Taught man that which he knew not.
96:6
كَلَّآNaykallāإِنَّIndeedinnaٱلْإِنسَـٰنَmanl-insānaلَيَطْغَىٰٓsurely transgresseslayaṭghā٦
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
96:7
أَنThatanرَّءَاهُhe sees himselfraāhuٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓself-sufficientis'taghnā٧
Because he sees himself self-sufficient.
96:8
إِنَّIndeedinnaإِلَىٰtoilāرَبِّكَyour Lordrabbikaٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ(is) the returnl-ruj'ʿā٨
Indeed, to your Lord is the return.
96:9
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenara-aytaٱلَّذِىthe one whoalladhīيَنْهَىٰforbidsyanhā٩
Have you seen the one who forbids
96:10
عَبْدًاA slaveʿabdanإِذَاwhenidhāصَلَّىٰٓhe praysṣallā١٠
A servant when he prays?
96:11
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenara-aytaإِنifinكَانَhe iskānaعَلَىuponʿalāٱلْهُدَىٰٓ[the] guidancel-hudā١١
Have you seen if he is upon guidance
96:12
أَوْOrawأَمَرَhe enjoinsamaraبِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ[of the] righteousnessbil-taqwā١٢
Or enjoins righteousness?
96:13
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenara-aytaإِنifinكَذَّبَhe denieskadhabaوَتَوَلَّىٰٓand turns awaywatawallā١٣
Have you seen if he denies and turns away -
96:14
أَلَمْDoes notalamيَعْلَمhe knowyaʿlamبِأَنَّthatbi-annaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaيَرَىٰseesyarā١٤
Does he not know that Allāh sees?
96:15
كَلَّاNaykallāلَئِنIfla-inلَّمْnotlamيَنتَهِhe desistsyantahiلَنَسْفَعًۢاsurely We will drag himlanasfaʿanبِٱلنَّاصِيَةِby the forelockbil-nāṣiyati١٥
No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock
96:16
نَاصِيَةٍۢA forelocknāṣiyatinكَـٰذِبَةٍlyingkādhibatinخَاطِئَةٍۢsinfulkhāṭi-atin١٦
A lying, sinning forelock.
96:17
فَلْيَدْعُThen let him callfalyadʿuنَادِيَهُۥhis associatesnādiyahu١٧
Then let him call his associates;
96:18
سَنَدْعُWe will callsanadʿuٱلزَّبَانِيَةَthe Angels of Helll-zabāniyata١٨
We will call the angels of Hell.
96:19
كَلَّاNaykallāلَا(Do) notlāتُطِعْهُobey himtuṭiʿ'huوَٱسْجُدْBut prostratewa-us'judوَٱقْتَرِب ۩and draw near (to Allah)wa-iq'tarib١٩
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
