الدخان

Bismillah

بِسْمِ In (the) name ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

44:1

حمٓ Ha Meem ١ (1)

Ḥā, Meem.

44:2

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ By the Book ٱلْمُبِينِ the clear ٢ (2)

By the clear Book,

44:3

إِنَّآ Indeed, We أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ revealed it فِى in لَيْلَةٍۢ a Night مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ Blessed إِنَّا Indeed, We كُنَّا [We] are مُنذِرِينَ (ever) warning ٣ (3)

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].

44:4

فِيهَا Therein يُفْرَقُ is made distinct كُلُّ every أَمْرٍ affair حَكِيمٍ wise ٤ (4)

Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct every precise matter -

44:5

أَمْرًۭا A command مِّنْ from عِندِنَآ ۚ Us إِنَّا Indeed, We كُنَّا [We] are مُرْسِلِينَ (ever) sending ٥ (5)

[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]

44:6

رَحْمَةًۭ As Mercy مِّن from رَّبِّكَ ۚ your Lord إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He هُوَ [He] ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearer ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٦ (6)

As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing,

44:7

رَبِّ Lord ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth وَمَا and whatever بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ (is) between both of them إِن if كُنتُم you are مُّوقِنِينَ certain ٧ (7)

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.

44:8

لَآ (There is) no إِلَـٰهَ god إِلَّا except هُوَ Him يُحْىِۦ He gives life وَيُمِيتُ ۖ and causes death رَبُّكُمْ your Lord وَرَبُّ and (the) Lord ءَابَآئِكُمُ (of) your fathers ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former ٨ (8)

There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.

44:9

بَلْ Nay هُمْ they فِى (are) in شَكٍّۢ doubt يَلْعَبُونَ playing ٩ (9)

But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.

44:10

فَٱرْتَقِبْ Then watch يَوْمَ (for the) Day تَأْتِى (when) will bring ٱلسَّمَآءُ the sky بِدُخَانٍۢ smoke مُّبِينٍۢ visible ١٠ (10)

Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke

44:11

يَغْشَى Enveloping ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ the people هَـٰذَا This عَذَابٌ (will be) a punishment أَلِيمٌۭ painful ١١ (11)

Covering the people; this is a painful torment.

44:12

رَّبَّنَا Our Lord ٱكْشِفْ Remove عَنَّا from us ٱلْعَذَابَ the punishment إِنَّا indeed, we مُؤْمِنُونَ (are) believers ١٢ (12)

[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."

44:13

أَنَّىٰ How can لَهُمُ (there be) for them ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ the reminder وَقَدْ when verily جَآءَهُمْ had come to them رَسُولٌۭ a Messenger مُّبِينٌۭ clear ١٣ (13)

How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.

44:14

ثُمَّ Then تَوَلَّوْا۟ they turned away عَنْهُ from him وَقَالُوا۟ and said مُعَلَّمٌۭ One taught مَّجْنُونٌ a mad man ١٤ (14)

Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."

44:15

إِنَّا Indeed, We كَاشِفُوا۟ (will) remove ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment قَلِيلًا ۚ a little إِنَّكُمْ indeed, you عَآئِدُونَ (will) return ١٥ (15)

Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].

44:16

يَوْمَ (The) Day نَبْطِشُ We will seize ٱلْبَطْشَةَ (with) the seizure ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ the greatest إِنَّا indeed, We مُنتَقِمُونَ (will) take retribution ١٦ (16)

The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.

44:17

۞ وَلَقَدْ And certainly فَتَنَّا We tried قَبْلَهُمْ before them قَوْمَ (the) people فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun وَجَآءَهُمْ and came to them رَسُولٌۭ a Messenger كَرِيمٌ noble ١٧ (17)

And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger [i.e., Moses],

44:18

أَنْ That أَدُّوٓا۟ Deliver إِلَىَّ to me عِبَادَ (the) servants ٱللَّهِ ۖ (of) Allah إِنِّى Indeed, I am لَكُمْ to you رَسُولٌ a Messenger أَمِينٌۭ trustworthy ١٨ (18)

[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"

44:19

وَأَن And that لَّا (do) not تَعْلُوا۟ exalt yourselves عَلَى against ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I ءَاتِيكُم [I] have come to you بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ with an authority مُّبِينٍۢ clear ١٩ (19)

And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allāh. Indeed, I have come to you with clear evidence.

44:20

وَإِنِّى And indeed, I عُذْتُ [I] seek refuge بِرَبِّى with my Lord وَرَبِّكُمْ and your Lord أَن lest تَرْجُمُونِ you stone me ٢٠ (20)

And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.

44:21

وَإِن And if لَّمْ not تُؤْمِنُوا۟ you believe لِى me فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ then leave me alone ٢١ (21)

But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."

44:22

فَدَعَا So he called رَبَّهُۥٓ his Lord أَنَّ That هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ these قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people مُّجْرِمُونَ criminals ٢٢ (22)

And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.

44:23

فَأَسْرِ Then "Set out بِعِبَادِى with My slaves لَيْلًا (by) night إِنَّكُم Indeed, you مُّتَّبَعُونَ (will be) followed ٢٣ (23)

[Allāh said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.

44:24

وَٱتْرُكِ And leave ٱلْبَحْرَ the sea رَهْوًا ۖ at rest إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they جُندٌۭ (are) an army مُّغْرَقُونَ (to be) drowned ٢٤ (24)

And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."

44:25

كَمْ How many تَرَكُوا۟ (did) they leave مِن of جَنَّـٰتٍۢ gardens وَعُيُونٍۢ and springs ٢٥ (25)

How much they left behind of gardens and springs

44:26

وَزُرُوعٍۢ And cornfields وَمَقَامٍۢ and places كَرِيمٍۢ noble ٢٦ (26)

And crops and noble sites

44:27

وَنَعْمَةٍۢ And pleasant things كَانُوا۟ they used to فِيهَا therein فَـٰكِهِينَ take delight ٢٧ (27)

And comfort wherein they were amused.

44:28

كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ Thus وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا And We made it (an) inherit(ance) قَوْمًا (for) a people ءَاخَرِينَ another ٢٨ (28)

Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.

44:29

فَمَا And not بَكَتْ wept عَلَيْهِمُ for them ٱلسَّمَآءُ the heaven وَٱلْأَرْضُ and the earth وَمَا and not كَانُوا۟ they were مُنظَرِينَ given respite ٢٩ (29)

And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.

44:30

وَلَقَدْ And certainly نَجَّيْنَا We saved بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel مِنَ from ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment ٱلْمُهِينِ the humiliating ٣٠ (30)

And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -

44:31

مِن From فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ Firaun إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he كَانَ was عَالِيًۭا arrogant مِّنَ among ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ the transgressors ٣١ (31)

From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.

44:32

وَلَقَدِ And certainly ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ We chose them عَلَىٰ by عِلْمٍ knowledge عَلَى over ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ the worlds ٣٢ (32)

And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.

44:33

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم And We gave them مِّنَ of ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ the Signs مَا that فِيهِ in it بَلَـٰٓؤٌۭا۟ (was) a trial مُّبِينٌ clear ٣٣ (33)

And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.

44:34

إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ these لَيَقُولُونَ surely, they say ٣٤ (34)

Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,

44:35

إِنْ Not هِىَ it إِلَّا (is) but مَوْتَتُنَا our death ٱلْأُولَىٰ the first وَمَا and not نَحْنُ we بِمُنشَرِينَ (will be) raised again ٣٥ (35)

"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.

44:36

فَأْتُوا۟ Then bring بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ our forefathers إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ٣٦ (36)

Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."

44:37

أَهُمْ Are they خَيْرٌ better أَمْ or قَوْمُ (the) people تُبَّعٍۢ (of) Tubba وَٱلَّذِينَ and those مِن before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ before them أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۖ We destroyed them إِنَّهُمْ indeed, they كَانُوا۟ were مُجْرِمِينَ criminals ٣٧ (37)

Are they better or the people of Tubbaʿ1 and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.

44:38

وَمَا And not خَلَقْنَا We created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth وَمَا and whatever بَيْنَهُمَا (is) between them لَـٰعِبِينَ (in) play ٣٨ (38)

And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.

44:39

مَا Not خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ We created both of them إِلَّا but بِٱلْحَقِّ in [the] truth وَلَـٰكِنَّ but أَكْثَرَهُمْ most of them لَا (do) not يَعْلَمُونَ know ٣٩ (39)

We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.

44:40

إِنَّ Indeed يَوْمَ (the) Day of Judgment ٱلْفَصْلِ (the) Day of Judgment مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ (is) an appointed term for them أَجْمَعِينَ all ٤٠ (40)

Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -

44:41

يَوْمَ (The) Day لَا not يُغْنِى will avail مَوْلًى a relation عَن for مَّوْلًۭى a relation شَيْـًۭٔا anything وَلَا and not هُمْ they يُنصَرُونَ will be helped ٤١ (41)

The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -

44:42

إِلَّا Except مَن (on) whom رَّحِمَ Allah has mercy ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah has mercy إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He هُوَ [He] ٱلْعَزِيزُ (is) the All-Mighty ٱلرَّحِيمُ the Most Merciful ٤٢ (42)

Except those [believers] on whom Allāh has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

44:43

إِنَّ Indeed شَجَرَتَ (the) tree ٱلزَّقُّومِ (of) Zaqqum ٤٣ (43)

Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm

44:44

طَعَامُ (Will be) food ٱلْأَثِيمِ (of) the sinner(s) ٤٤ (44)

Is food for the sinful.

44:45

كَٱلْمُهْلِ Like the murky oil يَغْلِى it will boil فِى in ٱلْبُطُونِ the bellies ٤٥ (45)

Like murky oil, it boils within bellies

44:46

كَغَلْىِ Like boiling ٱلْحَمِيمِ (of) scalding water ٤٦ (46)

Like the boiling of scalding water.

44:47

خُذُوهُ Seize him فَٱعْتِلُوهُ and drag him إِلَىٰ into سَوَآءِ (the) midst ٱلْجَحِيمِ (of) the Hellfire ٤٧ (47)

[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,

44:48

ثُمَّ Then صُبُّوا۟ pour فَوْقَ over رَأْسِهِۦ his head مِنْ of عَذَابِ (the) punishment ٱلْحَمِيمِ (of) the scalding water ٤٨ (48)

Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."

44:49

ذُقْ Taste إِنَّكَ Indeed, you أَنتَ [you] (were) ٱلْعَزِيزُ the mighty ٱلْكَرِيمُ the noble ٤٩ (49)

[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!

44:50

إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰذَا this مَا (is) what كُنتُم you used to بِهِۦ [about it] تَمْتَرُونَ doubt ٥٠ (50)

Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."

44:51

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous فِى (will be) in مَقَامٍ a place أَمِينٍۢ secure ٥١ (51)

Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place:

44:52

فِى In جَنَّـٰتٍۢ gardens وَعُيُونٍۢ and springs ٥٢ (52)

Within gardens and springs,

44:53

يَلْبَسُونَ Wearing garments مِن of سُندُسٍۢ fine silk وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢ and heavy silk مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ facing each other ٥٣ (53)

Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.

44:54

كَذَٰلِكَ Thus وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم And We will marry them بِحُورٍ (to) companions with beautiful eyes عِينٍۢ (to) companions with beautiful eyes ٥٤ (54)

Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.

44:55

يَدْعُونَ They will call فِيهَا therein بِكُلِّ for every (kind) فَـٰكِهَةٍ (of) fruit ءَامِنِينَ secure ٥٥ (55)

They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.

44:56

لَا Not يَذُوقُونَ they will taste فِيهَا therein ٱلْمَوْتَ the death إِلَّا except ٱلْمَوْتَةَ the death ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ the first وَوَقَىٰهُمْ And He will protect them عَذَابَ (from the) punishment ٱلْجَحِيمِ (of) the Hellfire ٥٦ (56)

They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire

44:57

فَضْلًۭا A Bounty مِّن from رَّبِّكَ ۚ your Lord ذَٰلِكَ That هُوَ it ٱلْفَوْزُ (will be) the success ٱلْعَظِيمُ the great ٥٧ (57)

As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.

44:58

فَإِنَّمَا Indeed يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ We have made it easy بِلِسَانِكَ in your tongue لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَتَذَكَّرُونَ take heed ٥٨ (58)

And indeed, We have eased it [i.e., the Qur’ān] in your tongue that they might be reminded.

44:59

فَٱرْتَقِبْ So watch إِنَّهُم indeed, they مُّرْتَقِبُونَ (too are) watching ٥٩ (59)

So watch, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
