Meccan 20 Ayahs Juz 1
البلد

Surah Al-Balad (البلد) is chapter 90 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 20 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
90:1
لَآNayأُقْسِمُI swearuq'simuبِهَـٰذَاby thisbihādhāٱلْبَلَدِcityl-baladi١
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
90:2
وَأَنتَAnd youwa-antaحِلٌّۢ(are) free (to dwell)ḥillunبِهَـٰذَاin thisbihādhāٱلْبَلَدِcityl-baladi٢
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city
90:3
وَوَالِدٍۢAnd the begetterwawālidinوَمَاand whatwamāوَلَدَhe begotwalada٣
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
90:4
لَقَدْCertainlylaqadخَلَقْنَاWe have createdkhalaqnāٱلْإِنسَـٰنَmanl-insānaفِى(to be) inكَبَدٍhardshipkabadin٤
We have certainly created man into hardship.
90:5
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he thinkayaḥsabuأَنthatanلَّنnotlanيَقْدِرَhas poweryaqdiraعَلَيْهِover himʿalayhiأَحَدٌۭanyoneaḥadun٥
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
90:6
يَقُولُHe will sayyaqūluأَهْلَكْتُI have squanderedahlaktuمَالًۭاwealthmālanلُّبَدًاabundantlubadan٦
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
90:7
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he thinkayaḥsabuأَنthatanلَّمْnotlamيَرَهُۥٓsees himyarahuأَحَدٌanyoneaḥadun٧
Does he think that no one has seen him?
90:8
أَلَمْHave notalamنَجْعَلWe madenajʿalلَّهُۥfor himlahuعَيْنَيْنِtwo eyesʿaynayni٨
Have We not made for him two eyes?
90:9
وَلِسَانًۭاAnd a tonguewalisānanوَشَفَتَيْنِand two lipswashafatayni٩
And a tongue and two lips?
90:10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُAnd shown himwahadaynāhuٱلنَّجْدَيْنِthe two waysl-najdayni١٠
And have shown him the two ways?
90:11
فَلَاBut notfalāٱقْتَحَمَhe has attemptediq'taḥamaٱلْعَقَبَةَthe steep pathl-ʿaqabata١١
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
90:12
وَمَآAnd whatwamāأَدْرَىٰكَcan make you knowadrākaمَاwhatٱلْعَقَبَةُthe steep path (is)l-ʿaqabatu١٢
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
90:13
فَكُّ(It is) freeingfakkuرَقَبَةٍa neckraqabatin١٣
It is the freeing of a slave
90:14
أَوْOrawإِطْعَـٰمٌۭfeedingiṭ'ʿāmunفِىinيَوْمٍۢa dayyawminذِىofdhīمَسْغَبَةٍۢsevere hungermasghabatin١٤
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
90:15
يَتِيمًۭاAn orphanyatīmanذَاofdhāمَقْرَبَةٍnear relationshipmaqrabatin١٥
An orphan of near relationship
90:16
أَوْOrawمِسْكِينًۭاa needy personmis'kīnanذَاindhāمَتْرَبَةٍۢmiserymatrabatin١٦
Or a needy person in misery
90:17
ثُمَّThenthummaكَانَhe iskānaمِنَofminaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūوَتَوَاصَوْا۟and enjoin (each other)watawāṣawبِٱلصَّبْرِto patiencebil-ṣabriوَتَوَاصَوْا۟and enjoin (each other)watawāṣawبِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِto compassionbil-marḥamati١٧
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
90:18
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThoseulāikaأَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companionsaṣḥābuٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ(of) the right (hand)l-maymanati١٨
Those are the companions of the right.
90:19
وَٱلَّذِينَBut those whowa-alladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievekafarūبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاin Our Versesbiāyātināهُمْtheyhumأَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companionsaṣḥābuٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ(of) the left (hand)l-mashamati١٩
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
90:20
عَلَيْهِمْOver themʿalayhimنَارٌۭ(will be the) Firenārunمُّؤْصَدَةٌۢclosed inmu'ṣadatun٢٠
Over them will be fire closed in.
