الفجر
Bismillah
بِسْمِ In (the) name bis'mi
In (the) name
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
the Most Merciful
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
89:1
وَٱلْفَجْرِ By the dawn wal-fajri
By the dawn
١ (1)
(1)
By the dawn
89:2
وَلَيَالٍ And the nights walayālin
And the nights
عَشْرٍۢ ten ʿashrin
ten
٢ (2)
(2)
And [by] ten nights
89:3
وَٱلشَّفْعِ And the even wal-shafʿi
And the even
وَٱلْوَتْرِ and the odd wal-watri
and the odd
٣ (3)
(3)
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
89:4
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night wa-al-layli
And the night
إِذَا when idhā
when
يَسْرِ it passes yasri
it passes
٤ (4)
(4)
And [by] the night when it passes,
89:5
هَلْ Is hal
Is
فِى in
in
ذَٰلِكَ that dhālika
that
قَسَمٌۭ (not) an oath qasamun
(not) an oath
لِّذِى for those lidhī
for those
حِجْرٍ who understand ḥij'rin
who understand
٥ (5)
(5)
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
89:6
أَلَمْ Did not alam
Did not
تَرَ you see tara
you see
كَيْفَ how kayfa
how
فَعَلَ dealt faʿala
dealt
رَبُّكَ your Lord rabbuka
your Lord
بِعَادٍ with Aad biʿādin
with Aad
٦ (6)
(6)
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
89:7
إِرَمَ Iram irama
Iram
ذَاتِ possessors (of) dhāti
possessors (of)
ٱلْعِمَادِ lofty pillars l-ʿimādi
lofty pillars
٧ (7)
(7)
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
89:8
ٱلَّتِى Which allatī
Which
لَمْ not lam
not
يُخْلَقْ had been created yukh'laq
had been created
مِثْلُهَا like them mith'luhā
like them
فِى in
in
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ the cities l-bilādi
the cities
٨ (8)
(8)
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
89:9
وَثَمُودَ And Thamud wathamūda
And Thamud
ٱلَّذِينَ who alladhīna
who
جَابُوا۟ carved out jābū
carved out
ٱلصَّخْرَ the rocks l-ṣakhra
the rocks
بِٱلْوَادِ in the valley bil-wādi
in the valley
٩ (9)
(9)
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
89:10
وَفِرْعَوْنَ And Firaun wafir'ʿawna
And Firaun
ذِى owner of dhī
owner of
ٱلْأَوْتَادِ stakes l-awtādi
stakes
١٠ (10)
(10)
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?
89:11
ٱلَّذِينَ Who alladhīna
Who
طَغَوْا۟ transgressed ṭaghaw
transgressed
فِى in
in
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ the lands l-bilādi
the lands
١١ (11)
(11)
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
89:12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ And (made) much fa-aktharū
And (made) much
فِيهَا therein fīhā
therein
ٱلْفَسَادَ corruption l-fasāda
corruption
١٢ (12)
(12)
And increased therein the corruption.
89:13
فَصَبَّ So poured faṣabba
So poured
عَلَيْهِمْ on them ʿalayhim
on them
رَبُّكَ your Lord rabbuka
your Lord
سَوْطَ scourge sawṭa
scourge
عَذَابٍ (of) punishment ʿadhābin
(of) punishment
١٣ (13)
(13)
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
89:14
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
رَبَّكَ your Lord rabbaka
your Lord
لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ (is) surely Ever Watchful labil-mir'ṣādi
(is) surely Ever Watchful
١٤ (14)
(14)
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
89:15
فَأَمَّا And as for fa-ammā
And as for
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ man l-insānu
man
إِذَا when idhā
when
مَا does
does
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ try him ib'talāhu
try him
رَبُّهُۥ his Lord rabbuhu
his Lord
فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ and is generous to him fa-akramahu
and is generous to him
وَنَعَّمَهُۥ and favors him wanaʿʿamahu
and favors him
فَيَقُولُ he says fayaqūlu
he says
رَبِّىٓ My Lord rabbī
My Lord
أَكْرَمَنِ has honored me akramani
has honored me
١٥ (15)
(15)
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1
89:16
وَأَمَّآ But wa-ammā
But
إِذَا when idhā
when
مَا does
does
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ He try him ib'talāhu
He try him
فَقَدَرَ and restricts faqadara
and restricts
عَلَيْهِ for him ʿalayhi
for him
رِزْقَهُۥ his provision riz'qahu
his provision
فَيَقُولُ then he says fayaqūlu
then he says
رَبِّىٓ My Lord rabbī
My Lord
أَهَـٰنَنِ (has) humiliated me ahānani
(has) humiliated me
١٦ (16)
(16)
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
89:17
كَلَّا ۖ Nay kallā
Nay
بَل But bal
But
لَّا not
not
تُكْرِمُونَ you honor tuk'rimūna
you honor
ٱلْيَتِيمَ the orphan l-yatīma
the orphan
١٧ (17)
(17)
No! But you do not honor the orphan
89:18
وَلَا And not walā
And not
تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ you feel the urge taḥāḍḍūna
you feel the urge
عَلَىٰ to ʿalā
to
طَعَامِ feed ṭaʿāmi
feed
ٱلْمِسْكِينِ the poor l-mis'kīni
the poor
١٨ (18)
(18)
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
89:19
وَتَأْكُلُونَ And you consume watakulūna
And you consume
ٱلتُّرَاثَ the inheritance l-turātha
the inheritance
أَكْلًۭا devouring aklan
devouring
لَّمًّۭا altogether lamman
altogether
١٩ (19)
(19)
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
89:20
وَتُحِبُّونَ And you love watuḥibbūna
And you love
ٱلْمَالَ wealth l-māla
wealth
حُبًّۭا (with) love ḥubban
(with) love
جَمًّۭا immense jamman
immense
٢٠ (20)
(20)
And you love wealth with immense love.
89:21
كَلَّآ Nay kallā
Nay
إِذَا When idhā
When
دُكَّتِ is leveled dukkati
is leveled
ٱلْأَرْضُ the earth l-arḍu
the earth
دَكًّۭا pounded dakkan
pounded
دَكًّۭا (and) crushed dakkan
(and) crushed
٢١ (21)
(21)
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
89:22
وَجَآءَ And comes wajāa
And comes
رَبُّكَ your Lord rabbuka
your Lord
وَٱلْمَلَكُ and the Angels wal-malaku
and the Angels
صَفًّۭا rank ṣaffan
rank
صَفًّۭا (upon) rank ṣaffan
(upon) rank
٢٢ (22)
(22)
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
89:23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ And is brought wajīa
And is brought
يَوْمَئِذٍۭ that Day yawma-idhin
that Day
بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ Hell bijahannama
Hell
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ That Day yawma-idhin
That Day
يَتَذَكَّرُ will remember yatadhakkaru
will remember
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ man l-insānu
man
وَأَنَّىٰ but how wa-annā
but how
لَهُ (will be) for him lahu
(will be) for him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ the remembrance l-dhik'rā
the remembrance
٢٣ (23)
(23)
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
89:24
يَقُولُ He will say yaqūlu
He will say
يَـٰلَيْتَنِى O I wish yālaytanī
O I wish
قَدَّمْتُ I had sent forth qaddamtu
I had sent forth
لِحَيَاتِى for my life liḥayātī
for my life
٢٤ (24)
(24)
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1
89:25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ So that Day fayawma-idhin
So that Day
لَّا not
not
يُعَذِّبُ will punish yuʿadhibu
will punish
عَذَابَهُۥٓ (as) His punishment ʿadhābahu
(as) His punishment
أَحَدٌۭ anyone aḥadun
anyone
٢٥ (25)
(25)
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
89:26
وَلَا And not walā
And not
يُوثِقُ will bind yūthiqu
will bind
وَثَاقَهُۥٓ (as) His binding wathāqahu
(as) His binding
أَحَدٌۭ anyone aḥadun
anyone
٢٦ (26)
(26)
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
89:27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا O yāayyatuhā
O
ٱلنَّفْسُ soul l-nafsu
soul
ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ who is satisfied l-muṭ'ma-inatu
who is satisfied
٢٧ (27)
(27)
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
89:28
ٱرْجِعِىٓ Return ir'jiʿī
Return
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
رَبِّكِ your Lord rabbiki
your Lord
رَاضِيَةًۭ well pleased rāḍiyatan
well pleased
مَّرْضِيَّةًۭ and pleasing marḍiyyatan
and pleasing
٢٨ (28)
(28)
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
89:29
فَٱدْخُلِى So enter fa-ud'khulī
So enter
فِى among
among
عِبَـٰدِى My slaves ʿibādī
My slaves
٢٩ (29)
(29)
And enter among My [righteous] servants
89:30
وَٱدْخُلِى And enter wa-ud'khulī
And enter
جَنَّتِى My Paradise jannatī
My Paradise
٣٠ (30)
(30)
And enter My Paradise."
