الفجر

Surah Al-Fajr (الفجر) is chapter 89 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 30 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
89:1
وَٱلْفَجْرِBy the dawnwal-fajri١
By the dawn
89:2
وَلَيَالٍAnd the nightswalayālinعَشْرٍۢtenʿashrin٢
And [by] ten nights
89:3
وَٱلشَّفْعِAnd the evenwal-shafʿiوَٱلْوَتْرِand the oddwal-watri٣
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
89:4
وَٱلَّيْلِAnd the nightwa-al-layliإِذَاwhenidhāيَسْرِit passesyasri٤
And [by] the night when it passes,
89:5
هَلْIshalفِىinذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaقَسَمٌۭ(not) an oathqasamunلِّذِىfor thoselidhīحِجْرٍwho understandḥij'rin٥
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
89:6
أَلَمْDid notalamتَرَyou seetaraكَيْفَhowkayfaفَعَلَdealtfaʿalaرَبُّكَyour Lordrabbukaبِعَادٍwith Aadbiʿādin٦
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
89:7
إِرَمَIramiramaذَاتِpossessors (of)dhātiٱلْعِمَادِlofty pillarsl-ʿimādi٧
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
89:8
ٱلَّتِىWhichallatīلَمْnotlamيُخْلَقْhad been createdyukh'laqمِثْلُهَاlike themmith'luhāفِىinٱلْبِلَـٰدِthe citiesl-bilādi٨
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
89:9
وَثَمُودَAnd Thamudwathamūdaٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīnaجَابُوا۟carved outjābūٱلصَّخْرَthe rocksl-ṣakhraبِٱلْوَادِin the valleybil-wādi٩
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
89:10
وَفِرْعَوْنَAnd Firaunwafir'ʿawnaذِىowner ofdhīٱلْأَوْتَادِstakesl-awtādi١٠
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?
89:11
ٱلَّذِينَWhoalladhīnaطَغَوْا۟transgressedṭaghawفِىinٱلْبِلَـٰدِthe landsl-bilādi١١
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
89:12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟And (made) muchfa-aktharūفِيهَاthereinfīhāٱلْفَسَادَcorruptionl-fasāda١٢
And increased therein the corruption.
89:13
فَصَبَّSo pouredfaṣabbaعَلَيْهِمْon themʿalayhimرَبُّكَyour Lordrabbukaسَوْطَscourgesawṭaعَذَابٍ(of) punishmentʿadhābin١٣
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
89:14
إِنَّIndeedinnaرَبَّكَyour Lordrabbakaلَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ(is) surely Ever Watchfullabil-mir'ṣādi١٤
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
89:15
فَأَمَّاAnd as forfa-ammāٱلْإِنسَـٰنُmanl-insānuإِذَاwhenidhāمَاdoesٱبْتَلَىٰهُtry himib'talāhuرَبُّهُۥhis Lordrabbuhuفَأَكْرَمَهُۥand is generous to himfa-akramahuوَنَعَّمَهُۥand favors himwanaʿʿamahuفَيَقُولُhe saysfayaqūluرَبِّىٓMy Lordrabbīأَكْرَمَنِhas honored meakramani١٥
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1
89:16
وَأَمَّآButwa-ammāإِذَاwhenidhāمَاdoesٱبْتَلَىٰهُHe try himib'talāhuفَقَدَرَand restrictsfaqadaraعَلَيْهِfor himʿalayhiرِزْقَهُۥhis provisionriz'qahuفَيَقُولُthen he saysfayaqūluرَبِّىٓMy Lordrabbīأَهَـٰنَنِ(has) humiliated meahānani١٦
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
89:17
كَلَّا ۖNaykallāبَلButbalلَّاnotتُكْرِمُونَyou honortuk'rimūnaٱلْيَتِيمَthe orphanl-yatīma١٧
No! But you do not honor the orphan
89:18
وَلَاAnd notwalāتَحَـٰٓضُّونَyou feel the urgetaḥāḍḍūnaعَلَىٰtoʿalāطَعَامِfeedṭaʿāmiٱلْمِسْكِينِthe poorl-mis'kīni١٨
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
89:19
وَتَأْكُلُونَAnd you consumewatakulūnaٱلتُّرَاثَthe inheritancel-turāthaأَكْلًۭاdevouringaklanلَّمًّۭاaltogetherlamman١٩
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
89:20
وَتُحِبُّونَAnd you lovewatuḥibbūnaٱلْمَالَwealthl-mālaحُبًّۭا(with) loveḥubbanجَمًّۭاimmensejamman٢٠
And you love wealth with immense love.
89:21
كَلَّآNaykallāإِذَاWhenidhāدُكَّتِis leveleddukkatiٱلْأَرْضُthe earthl-arḍuدَكًّۭاpoundeddakkanدَكًّۭا(and) crusheddakkan٢١
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
89:22
وَجَآءَAnd comeswajāaرَبُّكَyour Lordrabbukaوَٱلْمَلَكُand the Angelswal-malakuصَفًّۭاrankṣaffanصَفًّۭا(upon) rankṣaffan٢٢
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
89:23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَAnd is broughtwajīaيَوْمَئِذٍۭthat Dayyawma-idhinبِجَهَنَّمَ ۚHellbijahannamaيَوْمَئِذٍۢThat Dayyawma-idhinيَتَذَكَّرُwill rememberyatadhakkaruٱلْإِنسَـٰنُmanl-insānuوَأَنَّىٰbut howwa-annāلَهُ(will be) for himlahuٱلذِّكْرَىٰthe remembrancel-dhik'rā٢٣
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
89:24
يَقُولُHe will sayyaqūluيَـٰلَيْتَنِىO I wishyālaytanīقَدَّمْتُI had sent forthqaddamtuلِحَيَاتِىfor my lifeliḥayātī٢٤
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1
89:25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢSo that Dayfayawma-idhinلَّاnotيُعَذِّبُwill punishyuʿadhibuعَذَابَهُۥٓ(as) His punishmentʿadhābahuأَحَدٌۭanyoneaḥadun٢٥
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
89:26
وَلَاAnd notwalāيُوثِقُwill bindyūthiquوَثَاقَهُۥٓ(as) His bindingwathāqahuأَحَدٌۭanyoneaḥadun٢٦
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
89:27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَاOyāayyatuhāٱلنَّفْسُsoull-nafsuٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُwho is satisfiedl-muṭ'ma-inatu٢٧
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
89:28
ٱرْجِعِىٓReturnir'jiʿīإِلَىٰtoilāرَبِّكِyour Lordrabbikiرَاضِيَةًۭwell pleasedrāḍiyatanمَّرْضِيَّةًۭand pleasingmarḍiyyatan٢٨
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
89:29
فَٱدْخُلِىSo enterfa-ud'khulīفِىamongعِبَـٰدِىMy slavesʿibādī٢٩
And enter among My [righteous] servants
89:30
وَٱدْخُلِىAnd enterwa-ud'khulīجَنَّتِىMy Paradisejannatī٣٠
And enter My Paradise."
