Al-Mu'minun
المؤمنون
Surah Al-Mu'minun (المؤمنون) is chapter 23 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 118 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
23:1
قَدْIndeedqadأَفْلَحَsuccessfulaflaḥaٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ(are) the believersl-mu'minūna١
Certainly will the believers have succeeded:
23:2
ٱلَّذِينَThose whoalladhīnaهُمْ[they]humفِىduringfīصَلَاتِهِمْtheir prayersṣalātihimخَـٰشِعُونَ(are) humbly submissivekhāshiʿūna٢
They who are during their prayer humbly intent
23:3
وَٱلَّذِينَThose whowa-alladhīnaهُمْ[they]humعَنِfromʿaniٱللَّغْوِthe vain talkl-laghwiمُعْرِضُونَturn awaymuʿ'riḍūna٣
And they who turn away from ill speech
23:4
وَٱلَّذِينَThose whowa-alladhīnaهُمْ[they]humلِلزَّكَوٰةِof purification workslilzzakatiفَـٰعِلُونَ(are) doersfāʿilūna٤
And they who are observant of zakāh
23:5
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaهُمْ[they]humلِفُرُوجِهِمْof their modestylifurūjihimحَـٰفِظُونَ(are) guardiansḥāfiẓūna٥
And they who guard their private parts
23:6
إِلَّاExceptillāعَلَىٰٓfromʿalāأَزْوَٰجِهِمْtheir spousesazwājihimأَوْorawمَاwhatmāمَلَكَتْpossessmalakatأَيْمَـٰنُهُمْtheir right handsaymānuhumفَإِنَّهُمْthen indeed, theyfa-innahumغَيْرُ(are) notghayruمَلُومِينَblameworthymalūmīna٦
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed -
23:7
فَمَنِThen whoeverfamaniٱبْتَغَىٰseeksib'taghāوَرَآءَbeyondwarāaذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلْعَادُونَ(are) the transgressorsl-ʿādūna٧
But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -
23:8
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaهُمْ[they]humلِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْof their trustsli-amānātihimوَعَهْدِهِمْand their promise(s)waʿahdihimرَٰعُونَ(are) observersrāʿūna٨
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
23:9
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaهُمْ[they]humعَلَىٰoverʿalāصَلَوَٰتِهِمْtheir prayersṣalawātihimيُحَافِظُونَthey guardyuḥāfiẓūna٩
And they who carefully maintain their prayers -
23:10
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThoseulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ(are) the inheritorsl-wārithūna١٠
Those are the inheritors
23:11
ٱلَّذِينَWhoalladhīnaيَرِثُونَwill inherityarithūnaٱلْفِرْدَوْسَthe Paradisel-fir'dawsaهُمْTheyhumفِيهَاthereinfīhāخَـٰلِدُونَ(will) abide foreverkhālidūna١١
Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.
23:12
وَلَقَدْAnd indeedwalaqadخَلَقْنَاWe createdkhalaqnāٱلْإِنسَـٰنَthe humankindl-insānaمِنfromminسُلَـٰلَةٍۢan essencesulālatinمِّنofminطِينٍۢclayṭīnin١٢
And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.
23:13
ثُمَّThenthummaجَعَلْنَـٰهُWe placed himjaʿalnāhuنُطْفَةًۭ(as) a semen-dropnuṭ'fatanفِىinfīقَرَارٍۢa resting placeqarārinمَّكِينٍۢfirmmakīnin١٣
Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb].
23:14
ثُمَّThenthummaخَلَقْنَاWe createdkhalaqnāٱلنُّطْفَةَthe semen-dropl-nuṭ'fataعَلَقَةًۭ(into) a clinging substanceʿalaqatanفَخَلَقْنَاthen We createdfakhalaqnāٱلْعَلَقَةَthe clinging substancel-ʿalaqataمُضْغَةًۭ(into) an embryonic lumpmuḍ'ghatanفَخَلَقْنَاthen We createdfakhalaqnāٱلْمُضْغَةَthe embryonic lumpl-muḍ'ghataعِظَـٰمًۭا(into) bonesʿiẓāmanفَكَسَوْنَاthen We clothedfakasawnāٱلْعِظَـٰمَthe bonesl-ʿiẓāmaلَحْمًۭا(with) fleshlaḥmanثُمَّthenthummaأَنشَأْنَـٰهُWe produce itanshanāhuخَلْقًا(as) a creationkhalqanءَاخَرَ ۚanotherākharaفَتَبَارَكَSo blessed isfatabārakaٱللَّهُAllahl-lahuأَحْسَنُ(the) Bestaḥsanuٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَ(of) the Creatorsl-khāliqīna١٤
Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allāh, the best of creators.
23:15
ثُمَّThenthummaإِنَّكُمindeed, youinnakumبَعْدَafterbaʿdaذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَمَيِّتُونَsurely (will) dielamayyitūna١٥
Then indeed, after that you are to die.
23:16
ثُمَّThenthummaإِنَّكُمْindeed, youinnakumيَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawmaٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionl-qiyāmatiتُبْعَثُونَwill be resurrectedtub'ʿathūna١٦
Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
23:17
وَلَقَدْAnd indeedwalaqadخَلَقْنَاWe (have) createdkhalaqnāفَوْقَكُمْabove youfawqakumسَبْعَsevensabʿaطَرَآئِقَpathsṭarāiqaوَمَاand notwamāكُنَّاWe arekunnāعَنِofʿaniٱلْخَلْقِthe creationl-khalqiغَـٰفِلِينَunawareghāfilīna١٧
And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
23:18
وَأَنزَلْنَاAnd We send downwa-anzalnāمِنَfromminaٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāiمَآءًۢwatermāanبِقَدَرٍۢin (due) measurebiqadarinفَأَسْكَنَّـٰهُthen We cause it to settlefa-askannāhuفِىinfīٱلْأَرْضِ ۖthe earthl-arḍiوَإِنَّاAnd indeed, Wewa-innāعَلَىٰonʿalāذَهَابٍۭtaking it awaydhahābinبِهِۦtaking it awaybihiلَقَـٰدِرُونَsurely (are) Ablelaqādirūna١٨
And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.
23:19
فَأَنشَأْنَاThen We producedfa-anshanāلَكُمfor youlakumبِهِۦby itbihiجَنَّـٰتٍۢgardensjannātinمِّنof date-palmsminنَّخِيلٍۢof date-palmsnakhīlinوَأَعْنَـٰبٍۢand grapevineswa-aʿnābinلَّكُمْfor youlakumفِيهَاin itfīhāفَوَٰكِهُ(are) fruitsfawākihuكَثِيرَةٌۭabundantkathīratunوَمِنْهَاand from themwamin'hāتَأْكُلُونَyou eattakulūna١٩
And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.
23:20
وَشَجَرَةًۭAnd a treewashajaratanتَخْرُجُ(that) springs forthtakhrujuمِنfromminطُورِMount SinaiṭūriسَيْنَآءَMount Sinaisaynāaتَنۢبُتُ(which) producestanbutuبِٱلدُّهْنِoilbil-duh'niوَصِبْغٍۢand a relishwaṣib'ghinلِّلْـَٔاكِلِينَfor those who eatlil'ākilīna٢٠
And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food [i.e., olives] for those who eat.
23:21
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-innaلَكُمْfor youlakumفِىinfīٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِthe cattlel-anʿāmiلَعِبْرَةًۭ ۖsurely, (is) a lessonlaʿib'ratanنُّسْقِيكُمWe give you drinknus'qīkumمِّمَّاfrom whatmimmāفِى(is) infīبُطُونِهَاtheir belliesbuṭūnihāوَلَكُمْand for youwalakumفِيهَاin themfīhāمَنَـٰفِعُ(are) benefitsmanāfiʿuكَثِيرَةٌۭmanykathīratunوَمِنْهَاand of themwamin'hāتَأْكُلُونَyou eattakulūna٢١
And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat.
23:22
وَعَلَيْهَاAnd on themwaʿalayhāوَعَلَىand onwaʿalāٱلْفُلْكِ[the] shipsl-ful'kiتُحْمَلُونَyou are carriedtuḥ'malūna٢٢
And upon them and on ships you are carried.
23:23
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnāنُوحًاNuhnūḥanإِلَىٰtoilāقَوْمِهِۦhis peopleqawmihiفَقَالَand he saidfaqālaيَـٰقَوْمِO my peopleyāqawmiٱعْبُدُوا۟Worshipuʿ'budūٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaمَاnotmāلَكُمfor youlakumمِّنْ(is) anyminإِلَـٰهٍgodilāhinغَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖother than HimghayruhuأَفَلَاThen will notafalāتَتَّقُونَyou feartattaqūna٢٣
And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"
23:24
فَقَالَBut saidfaqālaٱلْمَلَؤُا۟the chiefsl-mala-uٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievedkafarūمِنamongminقَوْمِهِۦhis peopleqawmihiمَاThis is notmāهَـٰذَآThis is nothādhāإِلَّاbutillāبَشَرٌۭa manbasharunمِّثْلُكُمْlike youmith'lukumيُرِيدُhe wishesyurīduأَنtoanيَتَفَضَّلَassert (his) superiorityyatafaḍḍalaعَلَيْكُمْover youʿalaykumوَلَوْand ifwalawشَآءَAllah had willedshāaٱللَّهُAllah had willedl-lahuلَأَنزَلَsurely He (would have) sent downla-anzalaمَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭAngelsmalāikatanمَّاNotmāسَمِعْنَاwe heardsamiʿ'nāبِهَـٰذَاof thisbihādhāفِىٓfromfīءَابَآئِنَاour forefathersābāināٱلْأَوَّلِينَour forefathersl-awalīna٢٤
But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allāh had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
23:25
إِنْNotinهُوَhehuwaإِلَّا(is) butillāرَجُلٌۢa manrajulunبِهِۦin himbihiجِنَّةٌۭ(is) madnessjinnatunفَتَرَبَّصُوا۟so waitfatarabbaṣūبِهِۦconcerning himbihiحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāحِينٍۢa timeḥīnin٢٥
He is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time."
23:26
قَالَHe saidqālaرَبِّMy LordrabbiٱنصُرْنِىHelp meunṣur'nīبِمَاbecausebimāكَذَّبُونِthey deny mekadhabūni٢٦
[Noah] said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."
23:27
فَأَوْحَيْنَآSo We inspiredfa-awḥaynāإِلَيْهِto himilayhiأَنِThataniٱصْنَعِconstructiṣ'naʿiٱلْفُلْكَthe shipl-ful'kaبِأَعْيُنِنَاunder Our eyesbi-aʿyunināوَوَحْيِنَاand Our inspirationwawaḥyināفَإِذَاthen whenfa-idhāجَآءَcomesjāaأَمْرُنَاOur Commandamrunāوَفَارَand gushes forthwafāraٱلتَّنُّورُ ۙthe ovenl-tanūruفَٱسْلُكْthen putfa-us'lukفِيهَاinto itfīhāمِنofminكُلٍّۢevery (kind)kullinزَوْجَيْنِ(of) mateszawjayniٱثْنَيْنِtwoith'nayniوَأَهْلَكَand your familywa-ahlakaإِلَّاexceptillāمَنthosemanسَبَقَ(has) precededsabaqaعَلَيْهِagainst whomʿalayhiٱلْقَوْلُthe Wordl-qawluمِنْهُمْ ۖthereofmin'humوَلَاAnd (do) notwalāتُخَـٰطِبْنِىaddress Metukhāṭib'nīفِىconcerningfīٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۖwrongedẓalamūإِنَّهُمindeed, theyinnahumمُّغْرَقُونَ(are) the ones to be drownedmugh'raqūna٢٧
So We inspired to him, "Construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows, put into it [i.e., the ship] from each [creature] two mates and your family, except him for whom the decree [of destruction] has proceeded. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.
23:28
فَإِذَاAnd whenfa-idhāٱسْتَوَيْتَyou (have) boardedis'tawaytaأَنتَyouantaوَمَنand whoeverwamanمَّعَكَ(is) with youmaʿakaعَلَى[on]ʿalāٱلْفُلْكِthe shipl-ful'kiفَقُلِthen sayfaquliٱلْحَمْدُPraisel-ḥamduلِلَّهِ(be) to AllahlillahiٱلَّذِىWhoalladhīنَجَّىٰنَا(has) saved usnajjānāمِنَfromminaٱلْقَوْمِthe people l-qawmiٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna٢٨
And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise to Allāh who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.'
23:29
وَقُلAnd saywaqulرَّبِّMy Lordrabbiأَنزِلْنِىcause me to landanzil'nīمُنزَلًۭا(at) a landing placemunzalanمُّبَارَكًۭاblessedmubārakanوَأَنتَand Youwa-antaخَيْرُ(are) the Bestkhayruٱلْمُنزِلِينَ(of) those who cause to land.'l-munzilīna٢٩
And say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].'"
23:30
إِنَّIndeedinnaفِىinfīذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signslaāyātinوَإِنand indeedwa-inكُنَّاWe arekunnāلَمُبْتَلِينَsurely testinglamub'talīna٣٠
Indeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants].
23:31
ثُمَّThenthummaأَنشَأْنَاWe producedanshanāمِنۢafter themminبَعْدِهِمْafter thembaʿdihimقَرْنًاa generationqarnanءَاخَرِينَanotherākharīna٣١
Then We produced after them a generation of others.
23:32
فَأَرْسَلْنَاAnd We sentfa-arsalnāفِيهِمْamong themfīhimرَسُولًۭاa Messengerrasūlanمِّنْهُمْfrom themselvesmin'humأَنِ[that]aniٱعْبُدُوا۟Worshipuʿ'budūٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaمَاnotmāلَكُمfor youlakumمِّنْ(is) anyminإِلَـٰهٍgodilāhinغَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖother than HimghayruhuأَفَلَاThen will notafalāتَتَّقُونَyou feartattaqūna٣٢
And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"
23:33
وَقَالَAnd saidwaqālaٱلْمَلَأُthe chiefsl-mala-uمِنofminقَوْمِهِhis peopleqawmihiٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievedkafarūوَكَذَّبُوا۟and deniedwakadhabūبِلِقَآءِ(the) meetingbiliqāiٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhiratiوَأَتْرَفْنَـٰهُمْwhile We had given them luxurywa-atrafnāhumفِىinfīٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifel-ḥayatiٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yāمَاNotmāهَـٰذَآ(is) thishādhāإِلَّاbutillāبَشَرٌۭa manbasharunمِّثْلُكُمْlike youmith'lukumيَأْكُلُHe eatsyakuluمِمَّاof whatmimmāتَأْكُلُونَyou eattakulūnaمِنْهُ[from it]min'huوَيَشْرَبُand he drinkswayashrabuمِمَّاof whatmimmāتَشْرَبُونَyou drinktashrabūna٣٣
And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.
23:34
وَلَئِنْAnd surely ifwala-inأَطَعْتُمyou obeyaṭaʿtumبَشَرًۭاa manbasharanمِّثْلَكُمْlike youmith'lakumإِنَّكُمْindeed, youinnakumإِذًۭاthenidhanلَّخَـٰسِرُونَsurely (will be) loserslakhāsirūna٣٤
And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.
23:35
أَيَعِدُكُمْDoes he promise you ayaʿidukumأَنَّكُمْthat youannakumإِذَاwhenidhāمِتُّمْyou are deadmittumوَكُنتُمْand you becomewakuntumتُرَابًۭاdustturābanوَعِظَـٰمًاand boneswaʿiẓāmanأَنَّكُمthat youannakumمُّخْرَجُونَ(will be) brought forthmukh'rajūna٣٥
Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?
23:36
۞ هَيْهَاتَFar-(fetched)hayhātaهَيْهَاتَfar-(fetched)hayhātaلِمَاis whatlimāتُوعَدُونَyou are promisedtūʿadūna٣٦
How far, how far, is that which you are promised.
23:37
إِنْNotinهِىَithiyaإِلَّا(is) butillāحَيَاتُنَاour lifeḥayātunāٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yāنَمُوتُwe dienamūtuوَنَحْيَاand we livewanaḥyāوَمَاand notwamāنَحْنُwenaḥnuبِمَبْعُوثِينَ(will be) resurrectedbimabʿūthīna٣٧
It [i.e., life] is not but our worldly life - we die and live, but we will not be resurrected.
23:38
إِنْNotinهُوَ(is) hehuwaإِلَّاbutillāرَجُلٌa manrajulunٱفْتَرَىٰwho (has) inventedif'tarāعَلَىaboutʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiكَذِبًۭاa liekadhibanوَمَاand notwamāنَحْنُwenaḥnuلَهُۥ(in) himlahuبِمُؤْمِنِينَ(are) believersbimu'minīna٣٨
He is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allāh, and we will not believe him."
23:39
قَالَHe saidqālaرَبِّMy LordrabbiٱنصُرْنِىHelp meunṣur'nīبِمَاbecausebimāكَذَّبُونِthey deny mekadhabūni٣٩
He said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."
23:40
قَالَHe saidqālaعَمَّاAfter a little whileʿammāقَلِيلٍۢAfter a little whileqalīlinلَّيُصْبِحُنَّsurely they will becomelayuṣ'biḥunnaنَـٰدِمِينَregretfulnādimīna٤٠
[Allāh] said, "After a little, they will surely become regretful."
23:41
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُSo seized themfa-akhadhathumuٱلصَّيْحَةُthe awful cryl-ṣayḥatuبِٱلْحَقِّin truthbil-ḥaqiفَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْand We made themfajaʿalnāhumغُثَآءًۭ ۚ(as) rubbish of dead leavesghuthāanفَبُعْدًۭاSo awayfabuʿ'danلِّلْقَوْمِwith the people lil'qawmiٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna٤١
So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people.
23:42
ثُمَّThenthummaأَنشَأْنَاWe producedanshanāمِنۢafter themminبَعْدِهِمْafter thembaʿdihimقُرُونًاa generationqurūnanءَاخَرِينَanotherākharīna٤٢
Then We produced after them other generations.
23:43
مَاNotmāتَسْبِقُcan precedetasbiquمِنْanyminأُمَّةٍnationummatinأَجَلَهَاits termajalahāوَمَاand notwamāيَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَthey (can) delay (it)yastakhirūna٤٣
No nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter].
23:44
ثُمَّThenthummaأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnāرُسُلَنَاOur Messengersrusulanāتَتْرَا ۖ(in) successiontatrāكُلَّEvery timekullaمَاEvery timemāجَآءَcamejāaأُمَّةًۭ(to) a nationummatanرَّسُولُهَاits Messengerrasūluhāكَذَّبُوهُ ۚthey denied himkadhabūhuفَأَتْبَعْنَاso We made (them) follow fa-atbaʿnāبَعْضَهُمsome of thembaʿḍahumبَعْضًۭاothersbaʿḍanوَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْand We made themwajaʿalnāhumأَحَادِيثَ ۚnarrationsaḥādīthaفَبُعْدًۭاSo awayfabuʿ'danلِّقَوْمٍۢwith a people liqawminلَّاnotlāيُؤْمِنُونَthey believeyu'minūna٤٤
Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.
23:45
ثُمَّThenthummaأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnāمُوسَىٰMusamūsāوَأَخَاهُand his brotherwa-akhāhuهَـٰرُونَHarunhārūnaبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاwith Our Signsbiāyātināوَسُلْطَـٰنٍۢand an authoritywasul'ṭāninمُّبِينٍclearmubīnin٤٥
Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority
23:46
إِلَىٰToilāفِرْعَوْنَFiraunfir'ʿawnaوَمَلَإِي۟هِۦand his chiefswamala-ihiفَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟but they behaved arrogantlyfa-is'takbarūوَكَانُوا۟and they werewakānūقَوْمًاa peopleqawmanعَالِينَhaughtyʿālīna٤٦
To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.
23:47
فَقَالُوٓا۟Then they saidfaqālūأَنُؤْمِنُShall we believeanu'minuلِبَشَرَيْنِ(in) two menlibasharayniمِثْلِنَاlike ourselvesmith'lināوَقَوْمُهُمَاwhile their peoplewaqawmuhumāلَنَاfor uslanāعَـٰبِدُونَ(are) slavesʿābidūna٤٧
They said, "Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?"
23:48
فَكَذَّبُوهُمَاSo they denied themfakadhabūhumāفَكَانُوا۟and they becamefakānūمِنَofminaٱلْمُهْلَكِينَthose who were destroyedl-muh'lakīna٤٨
So they denied them and were of those destroyed.
23:49
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadءَاتَيْنَاWe gaveātaynāمُوسَىMusamūsāٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe Scripturel-kitābaلَعَلَّهُمْso that they maylaʿallahumيَهْتَدُونَbe guidedyahtadūna٤٩
And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided.
23:50
وَجَعَلْنَاAnd We madewajaʿalnāٱبْنَ(the) sonib'naمَرْيَمَ(of) Maryammaryamaوَأُمَّهُۥٓand his motherwa-ummahuءَايَةًۭa Signāyatanوَءَاوَيْنَـٰهُمَآand We sheltered themwaāwaynāhumāإِلَىٰtoilāرَبْوَةٍۢa high groundrabwatinذَاتِof tranquilitydhātiقَرَارٍۢof tranquilityqarārinوَمَعِينٍۢand water springswamaʿīnin٥٠
And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.
23:51
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO MessengersyāayyuhāٱلرُّسُلُO Messengersl-rusuluكُلُوا۟Eatkulūمِنَofminaٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِthe good thingsl-ṭayibātiوَٱعْمَلُوا۟and dowa-iʿ'malūصَـٰلِحًا ۖrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥanإِنِّىIndeed, I Aminnīبِمَاof whatbimāتَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūnaعَلِيمٌۭAll-Knowerʿalīmun٥١
[Allāh said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Knowing.
23:52
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-innaهَـٰذِهِۦٓthishādhihiأُمَّتُكُمْyour religionummatukumأُمَّةًۭ(is) religionummatanوَٰحِدَةًۭonewāḥidatanوَأَنَا۠And I Amwa-anāرَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukumفَٱتَّقُونِso fear Mefa-ittaqūni٥٢
And indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me."
23:53
فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟But they cut offfataqaṭṭaʿūأَمْرَهُمtheir affair (of unity)amrahumبَيْنَهُمْbetween thembaynahumزُبُرًۭا ۖ(into) sectszuburanكُلُّeachkulluحِزْبٍۭfactionḥiz'binبِمَاin whatbimāلَدَيْهِمْthey haveladayhimفَرِحُونَrejoicingfariḥūna٥٣
But they [i.e., the people] divided their religion among them into portions [i.e., sects] - each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.
23:54
فَذَرْهُمْSo leave themfadharhumفِىinfīغَمْرَتِهِمْtheir confusionghamratihimحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāحِينٍa timeḥīnin٥٤
So leave them in their confusion for a time.
23:55
أَيَحْسَبُونَDo they thinkayaḥsabūnaأَنَّمَاthat whatannamāنُمِدُّهُمWe extend to themnumidduhumبِهِۦ[with it]bihiمِنofminمَّالٍۢwealthmālinوَبَنِينَand childrenwabanīna٥٥
Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children
23:56
نُسَارِعُWe hastennusāriʿuلَهُمْto themlahumفِىinfīٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ ۚthe goodl-khayrātiبَلNaybalلَّاnotlāيَشْعُرُونَthey perceiveyashʿurūna٥٦
Is [because] We hasten for them good things? Rather, they do not perceive.
23:57
إِنَّIndeedinnaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaهُم[they]humمِّنْfromminخَشْيَةِ(the) fearkhashyatiرَبِّهِم(of) their Lordrabbihimمُّشْفِقُونَ(are) cautiousmush'fiqūna٥٧
Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord
23:58
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd thosewa-alladhīnaهُم[they]humبِـَٔايَـٰتِin (the) Signsbiāyātiرَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lordrabbihimيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūna٥٨
And they who believe in the signs of their Lord
23:59
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd thosewa-alladhīnaهُم[they]humبِرَبِّهِمْwith their Lordbirabbihimلَا(do) notlāيُشْرِكُونَassociate partnersyush'rikūna٥٩
And they who do not associate anything with their Lord
23:60
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaيُؤْتُونَgiveyu'tūnaمَآwhatmāءَاتَوا۟they giveātawوَّقُلُوبُهُمْwhile their heartswaqulūbuhumوَجِلَةٌ(are) fearfulwajilatunأَنَّهُمْbecause theyannahumإِلَىٰtoilāرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordrabbihimرَٰجِعُونَ(will) returnrājiʿūna٦٠
And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord -
23:61
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ(It is) thoseulāikaيُسَـٰرِعُونَwho hastenyusāriʿūnaفِىinfīٱلْخَيْرَٰتِthe good (deeds)l-khayrātiوَهُمْand theywahumلَهَاin themlahāسَـٰبِقُونَ(are) foremostsābiqūna٦١
It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.
23:62
وَلَاAnd notwalāنُكَلِّفُWe burdennukallifuنَفْسًاany soulnafsanإِلَّاexceptillāوُسْعَهَا ۖ(to) its capacitywus'ʿahāوَلَدَيْنَاand with Uswaladaynāكِتَـٰبٌۭ(is) a Recordkitābunيَنطِقُ(which) speaksyanṭiquبِٱلْحَقِّ ۚwith the truthbil-ḥaqiوَهُمْand theywahumلَا(will) notlāيُظْلَمُونَbe wrongedyuẓ'lamūna٦٢
And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
23:63
بَلْNaybalقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsqulūbuhumفِى(are) infīغَمْرَةٍۢconfusionghamratinمِّنْoverminهَـٰذَاthishādhāوَلَهُمْand for themwalahumأَعْمَـٰلٌۭ(are) deedsaʿmālunمِّنbesidesminدُونِbesidesdūniذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaهُمْtheyhumلَهَاfor itlahāعَـٰمِلُونَ(are) doersʿāmilūna٦٣
But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that [i.e., disbelief] which they are doing,
23:64
حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattāإِذَآwhenidhāأَخَذْنَاWe seizeakhadhnāمُتْرَفِيهِمtheir affluent onesmut'rafīhimبِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishmentbil-ʿadhābiإِذَاbeholdidhāهُمْTheyhumيَجْـَٔرُونَcry for helpyajarūna٦٤
Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.
23:65
لَا(Do) notlāتَجْـَٔرُوا۟cry for helptajarūٱلْيَوْمَ ۖtodayl-yawmaإِنَّكُمIndeed, youinnakumمِّنَّاfrom Usminnāلَاnotlāتُنصَرُونَwill be helpedtunṣarūna٦٥
Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.
23:66
قَدْVerilyqadكَانَتْwerekānatءَايَـٰتِىMy Versesāyātīتُتْلَىٰrecitedtut'lāعَلَيْكُمْto youʿalaykumفَكُنتُمْbut you usedfakuntumعَلَىٰٓ(to) onʿalāأَعْقَـٰبِكُمْyour heelsaʿqābikumتَنكِصُونَturn backtankiṣūna٦٦
My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels.
23:67
مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ(Being) arrogantmus'takbirīnaبِهِۦabout itbihiسَـٰمِرًۭاconversing by nightsāmiranتَهْجُرُونَspeaking eviltahjurūna٦٧
In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil.
23:68
أَفَلَمْThen, do notafalamيَدَّبَّرُوا۟they ponderyaddabbarūٱلْقَوْلَthe Wordl-qawlaأَمْoramجَآءَهُمhas come to themjāahumمَّاwhatmāلَمْnotlamيَأْتِ(had) comeyatiءَابَآءَهُمُ(to) their forefathersābāahumuٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(to) their forefathersl-awalīna٦٨
Then have they not reflected over the word [i.e., the Qur’ān], or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?
23:69
أَمْOramلَمْ(do) notlamيَعْرِفُوا۟they recognizeyaʿrifūرَسُولَهُمْtheir Messengerrasūlahumفَهُمْso theyfahumلَهُۥ(are) rejecting himlahuمُنكِرُونَ(are) rejecting himmunkirūna٦٩
Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?
23:70
أَمْOramيَقُولُونَthey sayyaqūlūnaبِهِۦIn himbihiجِنَّةٌۢ ۚ(is) madnessjinnatunبَلْNaybalجَآءَهُمhe brought themjāahumبِٱلْحَقِّthe truthbil-ḥaqiوَأَكْثَرُهُمْbut most of themwa-aktharuhumلِلْحَقِّto the truthlil'ḥaqqiكَـٰرِهُونَ(are) aversekārihūna٧٠
Or do they say, "In him is madness"? Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.
23:71
وَلَوِBut ifwalawiٱتَّبَعَ(had) followedittabaʿaٱلْحَقُّthe truthl-ḥaquأَهْوَآءَهُمْtheir desiresahwāahumلَفَسَدَتِsurely (would) have been corruptedlafasadatiٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُthe heavensl-samāwātuوَٱلْأَرْضُand the earthwal-arḍuوَمَنand whoeverwamanفِيهِنَّ ۚ(is) thereinfīhinnaبَلْNaybalأَتَيْنَـٰهُمWe have brought themataynāhumبِذِكْرِهِمْtheir reminderbidhik'rihimفَهُمْbut theyfahumعَنfromʿanذِكْرِهِمtheir reminderdhik'rihimمُّعْرِضُونَ(are) turning awaymuʿ'riḍūna٧١
But if the Truth [i.e., Allāh] had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.
23:72
أَمْOramتَسْـَٔلُهُمْyou ask themtasaluhumخَرْجًۭا(for) a paymentkharjanفَخَرَاجُBut the paymentfakharājuرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbikaخَيْرٌۭ ۖ(is) bestkhayrunوَهُوَand Hewahuwaخَيْرُ(is) the Bestkhayruٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ(of) the Providersl-rāziqīna٧٢
Or do you, [O Muḥammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.
23:73
وَإِنَّكَAnd indeed, youwa-innakaلَتَدْعُوهُمْcertainly call themlatadʿūhumإِلَىٰtoilāصِرَٰطٍۢ(the) PathṣirāṭinمُّسْتَقِيمٍۢStraightmus'taqīmin٧٣
And indeed, you invite them to a straight path.
23:74
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-innaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaلَا(do) notlāيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūnaبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِin the Hereafterbil-ākhiratiعَنِfromʿaniٱلصِّرَٰطِthe pathl-ṣirāṭiلَنَـٰكِبُونَsurely (are) deviatinglanākibūna٧٤
But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
23:75
۞ وَلَوْAnd ifwalawرَحِمْنَـٰهُمْWe had mercy on themraḥim'nāhumوَكَشَفْنَاand We removedwakashafnāمَاwhatmāبِهِم(was) on thembihimمِّنofminضُرٍّۢ(the) hardshipḍurrinلَّلَجُّوا۟surely they would persistlalajjūفِىinfīطُغْيَـٰنِهِمْtheir transgressionṭugh'yānihimيَعْمَهُونَwandering blindlyyaʿmahūna٧٥
And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
23:76
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَخَذْنَـٰهُمWe seized themakhadhnāhumبِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishmentbil-ʿadhābiفَمَاbut notfamāٱسْتَكَانُوا۟they submitis'takānūلِرَبِّهِمْto their Lordlirabbihimوَمَاand notwamāيَتَضَرَّعُونَthey supplicate humblyyataḍarraʿūna٧٦
And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]
23:77
حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattāإِذَاwhenidhāفَتَحْنَاWe openedfataḥnāعَلَيْهِمfor themʿalayhimبَابًۭاa gatebābanذَاof a punishmentdhāعَذَابٍۢof a punishmentʿadhābinشَدِيدٍsevereshadīdinإِذَاbeholdidhāهُمْTheyhumفِيهِin itfīhiمُبْلِسُونَ(will be in) despairmub'lisūna٧٧
Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
23:78
وَهُوَAnd Hewahuwaٱلَّذِىٓ(is) the One Whoalladhīأَنشَأَproducedansha-aلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلسَّمْعَthe hearingl-samʿaوَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَand the sightwal-abṣāraوَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚand the feelingwal-afidataقَلِيلًۭاlittleqalīlanمَّا(is) whatmāتَشْكُرُونَyou give thankstashkurūna٧٨
And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.
23:79
وَهُوَAnd Hewahuwaٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhīذَرَأَكُمْmultiplied youdhara-akumفِىinfīٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiوَإِلَيْهِand to Himwa-ilayhiتُحْشَرُونَyou will be gatheredtuḥ'sharūna٧٩
And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.
23:80
وَهُوَAnd Hewahuwaٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhīيُحْىِۦgives lifeyuḥ'yīوَيُمِيتُand causes deathwayumītuوَلَهُand for Himwalahuٱخْتِلَـٰفُ(is the) alternationikh'tilāfuٱلَّيْلِ(of) the nightal-layliوَٱلنَّهَارِ ۚand the daywal-nahāriأَفَلَاThen will notafalāتَعْقِلُونَyou reasontaʿqilūna٨٠
And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?
23:81
بَلْNaybalقَالُوا۟they sayqālūمِثْلَ(the) likemith'laمَا(of) whatmāقَالَsaidqālaٱلْأَوَّلُونَthe former (people)l-awalūna٨١
Rather, they say like what the former peoples said.
23:82
قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālūأَءِذَاWhat! Whena-idhāمِتْنَاwe are deadmit'nāوَكُنَّاand becomewakunnāتُرَابًۭاdustturābanوَعِظَـٰمًاand boneswaʿiẓāmanأَءِنَّاwould wea-innāلَمَبْعُوثُونَsurely be resurrectedlamabʿūthūna٨٢
They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
23:83
لَقَدْVerilylaqadوُعِدْنَاwe have been promisedwuʿid'nāنَحْنُ[we]naḥnuوَءَابَآؤُنَاand our forefatherswaābāunāهَـٰذَاthishādhāمِنbeforeminقَبْلُbeforeqabluإِنْnotinهَـٰذَآ(is) thishādhāإِلَّآbutillāأَسَـٰطِيرُ(the) talesasāṭīruٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna٨٣
We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."
23:84
قُلSayqulلِّمَنِTo whom (belongs)limaniٱلْأَرْضُthe earthl-arḍuوَمَنand whoeverwamanفِيهَآ(is) in itfīhāإِنifinكُنتُمْyoukuntumتَعْلَمُونَknowtaʿlamūna٨٤
Say, [O Muḥammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?"
23:85
سَيَقُولُونَThey will saysayaqūlūnaلِلَّهِ ۚTo AllahlillahiقُلْSayqulأَفَلَاThen will notafalāتَذَكَّرُونَyou remembertadhakkarūna٨٥
They will say, "To Allāh." Say, "Then will you not remember?"
23:86
قُلْSayqulمَنWhomanرَّبُّ(is the) Lordrabbuٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the seven heavensl-samāwātiٱلسَّبْعِ(of) the seven heavensl-sabʿiوَرَبُّand (the) Lordwarabbuٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Thronel-ʿarshiٱلْعَظِيمِthe Greatl-ʿaẓīmi٨٦
Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"
23:87
سَيَقُولُونَThey will saysayaqūlūnaلِلَّهِ ۚAllahlillahiقُلْSayqulأَفَلَاThen will notafalāتَتَّقُونَyou fear (Him)tattaqūna٨٧
They will say, "[They belong] to Allāh." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?"
23:88
قُلْSayqulمَنۢWho is (it)manبِيَدِهِۦin Whose Hand(s)biyadihiمَلَكُوتُ(is the) dominionmalakūtuكُلِّ(of) allkulliشَىْءٍۢthingsshayinوَهُوَand Hewahuwaيُجِيرُprotectsyujīruوَلَاand no (one)walāيُجَارُ(can) be protectedyujāruعَلَيْهِagainst HimʿalayhiإِنIfinكُنتُمْyoukuntumتَعْلَمُونَknowtaʿlamūna٨٨
Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?"
23:89
سَيَقُولُونَThey will saysayaqūlūnaلِلَّهِ ۚAllahlillahiقُلْSayqulفَأَنَّىٰThen howfa-annāتُسْحَرُونَare you deludedtus'ḥarūna٨٩
They will say, "[All belongs] to Allāh." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"
23:90
بَلْNaybalأَتَيْنَـٰهُمWe (have) brought themataynāhumبِٱلْحَقِّthe truthbil-ḥaqiوَإِنَّهُمْbut indeed, theywa-innahumلَكَـٰذِبُونَsurely, (are) liarslakādhibūna٩٠
Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.
23:91
مَاNotmāٱتَّخَذَAllah has takenittakhadhaٱللَّهُAllah has takenl-lahuمِنanyminوَلَدٍۢsonwaladinوَمَاand notwamāكَانَiskānaمَعَهُۥwith Himmaʿahuمِنْanyminإِلَـٰهٍ ۚgodilāhinإِذًۭاThenidhanلَّذَهَبَsurely (would have) taken awayladhahabaكُلُّeachkulluإِلَـٰهٍۭgodilāhinبِمَاwhatbimāخَلَقَhe createdkhalaqaوَلَعَلَاand surely would have overpoweredwalaʿalāبَعْضُهُمْsome of thembaʿḍuhumعَلَىٰ[on]ʿalāبَعْضٍۢ ۚothersbaʿḍinسُبْحَـٰنَGlory besub'ḥānaٱللَّهِ(to) Allahl-lahiعَمَّاabove whatʿammāيَصِفُونَthey attributeyaṣifūna٩١
Allāh has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have [sought to] overcome others. Exalted is Allāh above what they describe [concerning Him].
23:92
عَـٰلِمِKnowerʿālimiٱلْغَيْبِ(of) the unseenl-ghaybiوَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِand the witnessedwal-shahādatiفَتَعَـٰلَىٰexalted is Hefataʿālāعَمَّاabove whatʿammāيُشْرِكُونَthey associateyush'rikūna٩٢
[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him].
23:93
قُلSayqulرَّبِّMy LordrabbiإِمَّاIfimmāتُرِيَنِّىYou should show meturiyannīمَاwhatmāيُوعَدُونَthey are promisedyūʿadūna٩٣
Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised,
23:94
رَبِّMy Lordrabbiفَلَاthen (do) notfalāتَجْعَلْنِىplace metajʿalnīفِىamongfīٱلْقَوْمِthe people l-qawmiٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna٩٤
My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
23:95
وَإِنَّاAnd indeed Wewa-innāعَلَىٰٓonʿalāأَنthatanنُّرِيَكَWe show younuriyakaمَاwhatmāنَعِدُهُمْWe have promised themnaʿiduhumلَقَـٰدِرُونَsurely ablelaqādirūna٩٥
And indeed, We are Able to show you what We have promised them.
23:96
ٱدْفَعْRepelid'faʿبِٱلَّتِىby thatbi-allatīهِىَwhichhiyaأَحْسَنُ(is) best aḥsanuٱلسَّيِّئَةَ ۚthe evill-sayi-ataنَحْنُWenaḥnuأَعْلَمُknow bestaʿlamuبِمَاof whatbimāيَصِفُونَthey attributeyaṣifūna٩٦
Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.
23:97
وَقُلAnd saywaqulرَّبِّMy LordrabbiأَعُوذُI seek refugeaʿūdhuبِكَin Youbikaمِنْfromminهَمَزَٰتِ(the) suggestionshamazātiٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ(of) the evil onesl-shayāṭīni٩٧
And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
23:98
وَأَعُوذُAnd I seek refugewa-aʿūdhuبِكَin YoubikaرَبِّMy LordrabbiأَنLestanيَحْضُرُونِthey be present with meyaḥḍurūni٩٨
And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."
23:99
حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattāإِذَاwhenidhāجَآءَcomesjāaأَحَدَهُمُ(to) one of themaḥadahumuٱلْمَوْتُthe deathl-mawtuقَالَhe saysqālaرَبِّMy LordrabbiٱرْجِعُونِSend me backir'jiʿūni٩٩
[For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back
23:100
لَعَلِّىٓThat I maylaʿallīأَعْمَلُdoaʿmaluصَـٰلِحًۭاrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥanفِيمَاin whatfīmāتَرَكْتُ ۚI left behindtaraktuكَلَّآ ۚNokallāإِنَّهَاIndeed, itinnahāكَلِمَةٌ(is) a wordkalimatunهُوَhehuwaقَآئِلُهَا ۖspeaks itqāiluhāوَمِنand before themwaminوَرَآئِهِمand before themwarāihimبَرْزَخٌ(is) a barrierbarzakhunإِلَىٰtillilāيَوْمِ(the) Dayyawmiيُبْعَثُونَthey are resurrectedyub'ʿathūna١٠٠
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind."1 No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
23:101
فَإِذَاSo whenfa-idhāنُفِخَis blownnufikhaفِىinfīٱلصُّورِthe trumpetl-ṣūriفَلَآthen notfalāأَنسَابَ(there) will be relationshipansābaبَيْنَهُمْamong thembaynahumيَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Dayyawma-idhinوَلَاand notwalāيَتَسَآءَلُونَwill they ask each otheryatasāalūna١٠١
So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.
23:102
فَمَنThen (the one) whosefamanثَقُلَتْ(are) heavythaqulatمَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scalesmawāzīnuhuفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen those fa-ulāikaهُمُtheyhumuٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ(are) the successfull-muf'liḥūna١٠٢
And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.
23:103
وَمَنْBut (the one) whosewamanخَفَّتْ(are) lightkhaffatمَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scalesmawāzīnuhuفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaٱلَّذِينَthey [who]alladhīnaخَسِرُوٓا۟have lostkhasirūأَنفُسَهُمْtheir soulsanfusahumفِىinfīجَهَنَّمَHelljahannamaخَـٰلِدُونَthey (will) abide foreverkhālidūna١٠٣
But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.
23:104
تَلْفَحُWill burntalfaḥuوُجُوهَهُمُtheir faceswujūhahumuٱلنَّارُthe Firel-nāruوَهُمْand theywahumفِيهَاin itfīhāكَـٰلِحُونَ(will) grin with displaced lipskāliḥūna١٠٤
The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles.
23:105
أَلَمْWere notalamتَكُنْWere nottakunءَايَـٰتِىMy Versesāyātīتُتْلَىٰrecitedtut'lāعَلَيْكُمْto youʿalaykumفَكُنتُمand you used (to)fakuntumبِهَاdeny thembihāتُكَذِّبُونَdeny themtukadhibūna١٠٥
[It will be said], "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?"
23:106
قَالُوا۟They (will) sayqālūرَبَّنَاOur LordrabbanāغَلَبَتْOvercameghalabatعَلَيْنَا[on] usʿalaynāشِقْوَتُنَاour wretchednessshiq'watunāوَكُنَّاand we werewakunnāقَوْمًۭاa peopleqawmanضَآلِّينَastrayḍāllīna١٠٦
They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.
23:107
رَبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāأَخْرِجْنَاBring us outakhrij'nāمِنْهَاfrom itmin'hāفَإِنْthen iffa-inعُدْنَاwe returnʿud'nāفَإِنَّاthen indeed, wefa-innāظَـٰلِمُونَ(would be) wrongdoersẓālimūna١٠٧
Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers."
23:108
قَالَHe (will) sayqālaٱخْسَـُٔوا۟Remain despisedikh'saūفِيهَاin itfīhāوَلَاand (do) notwalāتُكَلِّمُونِspeak to Metukallimūni١٠٨
He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.
23:109
إِنَّهُۥIndeedinnahuكَانَ(there) waskānaفَرِيقٌۭa partyfarīqunمِّنْofminعِبَادِىMy slavesʿibādīيَقُولُونَ(who) saidyaqūlūnaرَبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāءَامَنَّاWe believeāmannāفَٱغْفِرْso forgivefa-igh'firلَنَاuslanāوَٱرْحَمْنَاand have mercy on uswa-ir'ḥamnāوَأَنتَand Youwa-antaخَيْرُ(are) bestkhayruٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(of) those who show mercyl-rāḥimīna١٠٩
Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.'
23:110
فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْBut you took themfa-ittakhadhtumūhumسِخْرِيًّا(in) mockerysikh'riyyanحَتَّىٰٓuntilḥattāأَنسَوْكُمْthey made you forgetansawkumذِكْرِىMy remembrancedhik'rīوَكُنتُمand you used (to)wakuntumمِّنْهُمْat themmin'humتَضْحَكُونَlaughtaḍḥakūna١١٠
But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
23:111
إِنِّىIndeed, Iinnīجَزَيْتُهُمُhave rewarded themjazaytuhumuٱلْيَوْمَthis Dayl-yawmaبِمَاbecausebimāصَبَرُوٓا۟they were patientṣabarūأَنَّهُمْindeed, theyannahumهُمُ[they]humuٱلْفَآئِزُونَ(are) the successful onesl-fāizūna١١١
Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]."
23:112
قَـٰلَHe will sayqālaكَمْHow longkamلَبِثْتُمْdid you remainlabith'tumفِىinfīٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiعَدَدَ(in) numberʿadadaسِنِينَ(of) yearssinīna١١٢
[Allāh] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?"
23:113
قَالُوا۟They will sayqālūلَبِثْنَاWe remainedlabith'nāيَوْمًاa dayyawmanأَوْorawبَعْضَa partbaʿḍaيَوْمٍۢ(of) a dayyawminفَسْـَٔلِbut askfasaliٱلْعَآدِّينَthose who keep countl-ʿādīna١١٣
They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."
23:114
قَـٰلَHe will sayqālaإِنNotinلَّبِثْتُمْyou stayedlabith'tumإِلَّاbutillāقَلِيلًۭا ۖa littleqalīlanلَّوْiflawأَنَّكُمْonly youannakumكُنتُمْ[you]kuntumتَعْلَمُونَknewtaʿlamūna١١٤
He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.
23:115
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْThen did you thinkafaḥasib'tumأَنَّمَاthatannamāخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْWe created youkhalaqnākumعَبَثًۭاuselesslyʿabathanوَأَنَّكُمْand that youwa-annakumإِلَيْنَاto Usilaynāلَاnotlāتُرْجَعُونَwill be returnedtur'jaʿūna١١٥
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"
23:116
فَتَعَـٰلَىSo exalted isfataʿālāٱللَّهُAllahl-lahuٱلْمَلِكُthe Kingl-malikuٱلْحَقُّ ۖthe Truthl-ḥaquلَآ(There is) nolāإِلَـٰهَgodilāhaإِلَّاexceptillāهُوَHimhuwaرَبُّ(the) Lordrabbuٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Thronel-ʿarshiٱلْكَرِيمِHonorablel-karīmi١١٦
So exalted is Allāh, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.
23:117
وَمَنAnd whoeverwamanيَدْعُinvokesyadʿuمَعَwithmaʿaٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiإِلَـٰهًاgodilāhanءَاخَرَotherākharaلَاnolāبُرْهَـٰنَproofbur'hānaلَهُۥfor himlahuبِهِۦin itbihiفَإِنَّمَاThen onlyfa-innamāحِسَابُهُۥhis accountḥisābuhuعِندَ(is) withʿindaرَبِّهِۦٓ ۚhis LordrabbihiإِنَّهُۥIndeed, [he]innahuلَاnotlāيُفْلِحُwill succeedyuf'liḥuٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَthe disbelieversl-kāfirūna١١٧
And whoever invokes besides Allāh another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
23:118
وَقُلAnd saywaqulرَّبِّMy LordrabbiٱغْفِرْForgiveigh'firوَٱرْحَمْand have mercywa-ir'ḥamوَأَنتَand Youwa-antaخَيْرُ(are the) Bestkhayruٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(of) those who show mercyl-rāḥimīna١١٨
And, [O Muḥammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."
