النور

Surah An-Nur (النور) is chapter 24 of the Holy Quran — a Medinan surah of 64 verses (ayahs). Medinan surahs were revealed after the migration to Medina and more often address worship, law and the life of the Muslim community.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
24:1
سُورَةٌA Surah sūratunأَنزَلْنَـٰهَاWe (have) sent it downanzalnāhāوَفَرَضْنَـٰهَاand We (have) made it obligatorywafaraḍnāhāوَأَنزَلْنَاand We (have) revealedwa-anzalnāفِيهَآthereinfīhāءَايَـٰتٍۭVersesāyātinبَيِّنَـٰتٍۢclearbayyinātinلَّعَلَّكُمْso that you maylaʿallakumتَذَكَّرُونَtake heedtadhakkarūna١
[This is] a sūrah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.
24:2
ٱلزَّانِيَةُThe fornicatressal-zāniyatuوَٱلزَّانِىand the fornicatorwal-zānīفَٱجْلِدُوا۟[then] flogfa-ij'lidūكُلَّeachkullaوَٰحِدٍۢonewāḥidinمِّنْهُمَاof themmin'humāمِا۟ئَةَ(with) hundredmi-ataجَلْدَةٍۢ ۖlash(es)jaldatinوَلَاAnd (let) notwalāتَأْخُذْكُمwithhold youtakhudh'kumبِهِمَاpity for thembihimāرَأْفَةٌۭpity for themrafatunفِىconcerningدِينِ(the) religion of Allahdīniٱللَّهِ(the) religion of Allahl-lahiإِنifinكُنتُمْyoukuntumتُؤْمِنُونَbelievetu'minūnaبِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahiوَٱلْيَوْمِand the Daywal-yawmiٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۖthe Lastl-ākhiriوَلْيَشْهَدْAnd let witnesswalyashhadعَذَابَهُمَاtheir punishmentʿadhābahumāطَآئِفَةٌۭa groupṭāifatunمِّنَofminaٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna٢
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion [i.e., law] of Allāh, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
24:3
ٱلزَّانِىThe fornicatoral-zānīلَا(will) notيَنكِحُmarryyankiḥuإِلَّاexceptillāزَانِيَةًa fornicatresszāniyatanأَوْorawمُشْرِكَةًۭa polytheist womanmush'rikatanوَٱلزَّانِيَةُand the fornicatress wal-zāniyatuلَا(will) notيَنكِحُهَآmarry heryankiḥuhāإِلَّاexceptillāزَانٍa fornicatorzāninأَوْorawمُشْرِكٌۭ ۚa polytheist manmush'rikunوَحُرِّمَAnd is forbiddenwaḥurrimaذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaعَلَىtoʿalāٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna٣
The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that [i.e., marriage to such persons] has been made unlawful to the believers.
24:4
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaيَرْمُونَaccuseyarmūnaٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِthe chaste womenl-muḥ'ṣanātiثُمَّthenthummaلَمْnotlamيَأْتُوا۟they bringyatūبِأَرْبَعَةِfourbi-arbaʿatiشُهَدَآءَwitnessesshuhadāaفَٱجْلِدُوهُمْthen flog themfa-ij'lidūhumثَمَـٰنِينَ(with) eightythamānīnaجَلْدَةًۭlashe(s)jaldatanوَلَاand (do) notwalāتَقْبَلُوا۟accepttaqbalūلَهُمْtheirlahumشَهَـٰدَةًtestimonyshahādatanأَبَدًۭا ۚeverabadanوَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَAnd thosewa-ulāikaهُمُtheyhumuٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ(are) the defiantly disobedientl-fāsiqūna٤
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
24:5
إِلَّاExceptillāٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaتَابُوا۟repenttābūمِنۢafterminبَعْدِafterbaʿdiذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaوَأَصْلَحُوا۟and reformwa-aṣlaḥūفَإِنَّThen indeedfa-innaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaغَفُورٌۭ(is) Oft-ForgivingghafūrunرَّحِيمٌۭMost Mercifulraḥīmun٥
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
24:6
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaيَرْمُونَaccuseyarmūnaأَزْوَٰجَهُمْtheir spousesazwājahumوَلَمْand notwalamيَكُنhaveyakunلَّهُمْfor themlahumشُهَدَآءُwitnessesshuhadāuإِلَّآexceptillāأَنفُسُهُمْthemselvesanfusuhumفَشَهَـٰدَةُthen (the) testimonyfashahādatuأَحَدِهِمْ(of) one of themaḥadihimأَرْبَعُ(is) fourarbaʿuشَهَـٰدَٰتٍۭtestimoniesshahādātinبِٱللَّهِ ۙby Allahbil-lahiإِنَّهُۥthat heinnahuلَمِنَ(is) surely oflaminaٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَthe truthfull-ṣādiqīna٦
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allāh that indeed, he is of the truthful.
24:7
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةُAnd the fifthwal-khāmisatuأَنَّthatannaلَعْنَتَ(the) curse of Allahlaʿnataٱللَّهِ(the) curse of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْهِ(be) upon himʿalayhiإِنifinكَانَhe iskānaمِنَofminaٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَthe liarsl-kādhibīna٧
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allāh be upon him if he should be of the liars.
24:8
وَيَدْرَؤُا۟But it would preventwayadra-uعَنْهَاfrom herʿanhāٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentl-ʿadhābaأَنthatanتَشْهَدَshe bears witnesstashhadaأَرْبَعَfourarbaʿaشَهَـٰدَٰتٍۭtestimoniesshahādātinبِٱللَّهِ ۙby Allahbil-lahiإِنَّهُۥthat heinnahuلَمِنَ(is) surely oflaminaٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَthe liarsl-kādhibīna٨
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allāh that indeed, he is of the liars.
24:9
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةَAnd the fifthwal-khāmisataأَنَّthatannaغَضَبَthe wrath of Allahghaḍabaٱللَّهِthe wrath of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْهَآ(be) upon herʿalayhāإِنifinكَانَhe iskānaمِنَofminaٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَthe truthfull-ṣādiqīna٩
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allāh be upon her if he was of the truthful.
24:10
وَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlāفَضْلُ(for) the Grace of Allahfaḍluٱللَّهِ(for) the Grace of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercy waraḥmatuhuوَأَنَّand thatwa-annaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaتَوَّابٌ(is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy)tawwābunحَكِيمٌAll-Wiseḥakīmun١٠
And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy... and because Allāh is Accepting of Repentance and Wise.
24:11
إِنَّIndeedinnaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaجَآءُوbroughtjāūبِٱلْإِفْكِthe liebil-if'kiعُصْبَةٌۭ(are) a groupʿuṣ'batunمِّنكُمْ ۚamong youminkumلَا(Do) notتَحْسَبُوهُthink ittaḥsabūhuشَرًّۭاbadsharranلَّكُم ۖfor youlakumبَلْnaybalهُوَithuwaخَيْرٌۭ(is) goodkhayrunلَّكُمْ ۚfor youlakumلِكُلِّFor everylikulliٱمْرِئٍۢpersonim'ri-inمِّنْهُمamong themmin'humمَّا(is) whatٱكْتَسَبَhe earnedik'tasabaمِنَofminaٱلْإِثْمِ ۚthe sinl-ith'miوَٱلَّذِىand the one whowa-alladhīتَوَلَّىٰtook upon himself a greater share of ittawallāكِبْرَهُۥtook upon himself a greater share of itkib'rahuمِنْهُمْamong them min'humلَهُۥfor himlahuعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentʿadhābunعَظِيمٌۭgreatʿaẓīmun١١
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment [i.e., Hellfire].
24:12
لَّوْلَآWhy notlawlāإِذْwhenidhسَمِعْتُمُوهُyou heard itsamiʿ'tumūhuظَنَّthinkẓannaٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believing menl-mu'minūnaوَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُand the believing womenwal-mu'minātuبِأَنفُسِهِمْgood of themselvesbi-anfusihimخَيْرًۭاgood of themselveskhayranوَقَالُوا۟and saywaqālūهَـٰذَآThishādhāإِفْكٌۭ(is) a lieif'kunمُّبِينٌۭclearmubīnun١٢
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of themselves [i.e., one another] and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
24:13
لَّوْلَاWhy (did) notlawlāجَآءُوthey bringjāūعَلَيْهِfor itʿalayhiبِأَرْبَعَةِfourbi-arbaʿatiشُهَدَآءَ ۚwitnessesshuhadāaفَإِذْThen whenfa-idhلَمْnotlamيَأْتُوا۟they broughtyatūبِٱلشُّهَدَآءِthe witnessesbil-shuhadāiفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaعِندَnear Allahʿindaٱللَّهِnear Allahl-lahiهُمُtheyhumuٱلْكَـٰذِبُونَ(are) the liarsl-kādhibūna١٣
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allāh, who are the liars.
24:14
وَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlāفَضْلُ(for the) Gracefaḍluٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercywaraḥmatuhuفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldl-dun'yāوَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِand the Hereafterwal-ākhiratiلَمَسَّكُمْsurely would have touched youlamassakumفِىinمَآwhatأَفَضْتُمْyou had rushed gliblyafaḍtumفِيهِconcerning itfīhiعَذَابٌa punishmentʿadhābunعَظِيمٌgreatʿaẓīmun١٤
And if it had not been for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment
24:15
إِذْWhenidhتَلَقَّوْنَهُۥyou received ittalaqqawnahuبِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْwith your tonguesbi-alsinatikumوَتَقُولُونَand you saidwataqūlūnaبِأَفْوَاهِكُمwith your mouthsbi-afwāhikumمَّاwhatلَيْسَnotlaysaلَكُمfor youlakumبِهِۦof itbihiعِلْمٌۭany knowledgeʿil'munوَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥand you thought itwataḥsabūnahuهَيِّنًۭا(was) insignificanthayyinanوَهُوَwhile itwahuwaعِندَ(was) near Allahʿindaٱللَّهِ(was) near Allahl-lahiعَظِيمٌۭgreatʿaẓīmun١٥
When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allāh, tremendous.
24:16
وَلَوْلَآAnd why notwalawlāإِذْwhenidhسَمِعْتُمُوهُyou heard itsamiʿ'tumūhuقُلْتُمyou saidqul'tumمَّاNotيَكُونُit isyakūnuلَنَآfor uslanāأَنthatanنَّتَكَلَّمَwe speaknatakallamaبِهَـٰذَاof thisbihādhāسُبْحَـٰنَكَGlory be to Yousub'ḥānakaهَـٰذَاThishādhāبُهْتَـٰنٌ(is) a slanderbuh'tānunعَظِيمٌۭgreatʿaẓīmun١٦
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allāh]; this is a great slander"?
24:17
يَعِظُكُمُAllah warns youyaʿiẓukumuٱللَّهُAllah warns youl-lahuأَنthatanتَعُودُوا۟you returntaʿūdūلِمِثْلِهِۦٓ(to the) like of itlimith'lihiأَبَدًاeverabadanإِنifinكُنتُمyou arekuntumمُّؤْمِنِينَbelieversmu'minīna١٧
Allāh warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
24:18
وَيُبَيِّنُAnd Allah makes clearwayubayyinuٱللَّهُAnd Allah makes clearl-lahuلَكُمُto youlakumuٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۚthe Versesl-āyātiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuعَلِيمٌ(is) All-KnowerʿalīmunحَكِيمٌAll-Wiseḥakīmun١٨
And Allāh makes clear to you the verses [i.e., His rulings], and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
24:19
إِنَّIndeedinnaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaيُحِبُّونَlikeyuḥibbūnaأَنthatanتَشِيعَ(should) spreadtashīʿaٱلْفَـٰحِشَةُthe immoralityl-fāḥishatuفِىamongٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūلَهُمْfor themlahumعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentʿadhābunأَلِيمٌۭpainfulalīmunفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldl-dun'yāوَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚand the Hereafterwal-ākhiratiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuيَعْلَمُknowsyaʿlamuوَأَنتُمْwhile youwa-antumلَا(do) notتَعْلَمُونَknowtaʿlamūna١٩
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allāh knows and you do not know.
24:20
وَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlāفَضْلُ(for the) Grace of Allahfaḍluٱللَّهِ(for the) Grace of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His MercywaraḥmatuhuوَأَنَّAnd thatwa-annaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaرَءُوفٌۭ(is) Full of KindnessraūfunرَّحِيمٌۭMost Mercifulraḥīmun٢٠
And if it had not been for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy... and because Allāh is Kind and Merciful.
24:21
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you who believeyāayyuhāٱلَّذِينَO you who believealladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟O you who believeāmanūلَا(Do) notتَتَّبِعُوا۟followtattabiʿūخُطُوَٰتِ(the) footstepskhuṭuwātiٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ۚ(of) the Shaitaanl-shayṭāniوَمَنand whoeverwamanيَتَّبِعْfollowsyattabiʿخُطُوَٰتِ(the) footstepskhuṭuwātiٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ(of) the Shaitaanl-shayṭāniفَإِنَّهُۥthen indeed, hefa-innahuيَأْمُرُcommandsyamuruبِٱلْفَحْشَآءِthe immoralitybil-faḥshāiوَٱلْمُنكَرِ ۚand the evilwal-munkariوَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlāفَضْلُ(for the) Grace of Allahfaḍluٱللَّهِ(for the) Grace of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercywaraḥmatuhuمَاnotزَكَىٰ(would) have been purezakāمِنكُمamong youminkumمِّنْanyoneminأَحَدٍanyoneaḥadinأَبَدًۭاeverabadanوَلَـٰكِنَّbutwalākinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaيُزَكِّىpurifiesyuzakkīمَنwhommanيَشَآءُ ۗHe willsyashāuوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuسَمِيعٌ(is) All-HearersamīʿunعَلِيمٌۭAll-Knowerʿalīmun٢١
O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan - indeed, he enjoins immorality and wrongdoing. And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have been pure, ever, but Allāh purifies whom He wills, and Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
24:22
وَلَاAnd notwalāيَأْتَلِlet swearyataliأُو۟لُوا۟those of virtueulūٱلْفَضْلِthose of virtuel-faḍliمِنكُمْamong youminkumوَٱلسَّعَةِand the amplitude of meanswal-saʿatiأَنthatanيُؤْتُوٓا۟they giveyu'tūأُو۟لِى(to) the near of kinulīٱلْقُرْبَىٰ(to) the near of kinl-qur'bāوَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينَand the needywal-masākīnaوَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَand the emigrantswal-muhājirīnaفِىinسَبِيلِ(the) waysabīliٱللَّهِ ۖ(of) Allahl-lahiوَلْيَعْفُوا۟And let them pardonwalyaʿfūوَلْيَصْفَحُوٓا۟ ۗand let them overlookwalyaṣfaḥūأَلَا(Do) notalāتُحِبُّونَyou liketuḥibbūnaأَنthatanيَغْفِرَAllah should forgiveyaghfiraٱللَّهُAllah should forgivel-lahuلَكُمْ ۗyoulakumوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuغَفُورٌۭ(is) Oft-ForgivingghafūrunرَّحِيمٌMost Mercifulraḥīmun٢٢
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allāh, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allāh should forgive you? And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
24:23
إِنَّIndeedinnaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaيَرْمُونَaccuseyarmūnaٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِthe chaste womenl-muḥ'ṣanātiٱلْغَـٰفِلَـٰتِthe unaware womenl-ghāfilātiٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ(and) the believing womenl-mu'minātiلُعِنُوا۟are cursedluʿinūفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldl-dun'yāوَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِand the Hereafterwal-ākhiratiوَلَهُمْAnd for themwalahumعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentʿadhābunعَظِيمٌۭgreatʿaẓīmun٢٣
Indeed, those who [falsely] accuse chaste, unaware and believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter; and they will have a great punishment
24:24
يَوْمَ(On a) Dayyawmaتَشْهَدُwill bear witnesstashhaduعَلَيْهِمْagainst themʿalayhimأَلْسِنَتُهُمْtheir tonguesalsinatuhumوَأَيْدِيهِمْand their handswa-aydīhimوَأَرْجُلُهُمand their feetwa-arjuluhumبِمَاfor whatbimāكَانُوا۟they usedkānūيَعْمَلُونَ(to) doyaʿmalūna٢٤
On a Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness against them as to what they used to do.
24:25
يَوْمَئِذٍۢThat Dayyawma-idhinيُوَفِّيهِمُAllah will pay them in fullyuwaffīhimuٱللَّهُAllah will pay them in fulll-lahuدِينَهُمُtheir recompensedīnahumuٱلْحَقَّthe duel-ḥaqaوَيَعْلَمُونَand they will knowwayaʿlamūnaأَنَّthatannaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaهُوَHehuwaٱلْحَقُّ(is) the Truthl-ḥaquٱلْمُبِينُthe Manifestl-mubīnu٢٥
That Day, Allāh will pay them in full their true [i.e., deserved] recompense, and they will know that it is Allāh who is the manifest Truth [i.e., perfect in justice].
24:26
ٱلْخَبِيثَـٰتُEvil womenal-khabīthātuلِلْخَبِيثِينَ(are) for evil menlil'khabīthīnaوَٱلْخَبِيثُونَand evil menwal-khabīthūnaلِلْخَبِيثَـٰتِ ۖ(are) for evil womenlil'khabīthātiوَٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتُAnd good womenwal-ṭayibātuلِلطَّيِّبِينَ(are) for good menlilṭṭayyibīnaوَٱلطَّيِّبُونَand good menwal-ṭayibūnaلِلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ ۚ(are) for good womenlilṭṭayyibātiأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThoseulāikaمُبَرَّءُونَ(are) innocentmubarraūnaمِمَّاof whatmimmāيَقُولُونَ ۖthey sayyaqūlūnaلَهُمFor themlahumمَّغْفِرَةٌۭ(is) forgivenessmaghfiratunوَرِزْقٌۭand a provisionwariz'qunكَرِيمٌۭnoblekarīmun٢٦
Evil words are for evil men, and evil men are [subjected] to evil words. And good words are for good men, and good men are [an object] of good words. Those [good people] are declared innocent of what they [i.e., slanderers] say. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
24:27
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO youyāayyuhāٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūلَا(Do) notتَدْخُلُوا۟entertadkhulūبُيُوتًاhousesbuyūtanغَيْرَother (than)ghayraبُيُوتِكُمْyour housesbuyūtikumحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāتَسْتَأْنِسُوا۟you have asked permissiontastanisūوَتُسَلِّمُوا۟and you have greetedwatusallimūعَلَىٰٓ[on]ʿalāأَهْلِهَا ۚits inhabitantsahlihāذَٰلِكُمْThatdhālikumخَيْرٌۭ(is) bestkhayrunلَّكُمْfor youlakumلَعَلَّكُمْso that you maylaʿallakumتَذَكَّرُونَpay heedtadhakkarūna٢٧
O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded [i.e., advised].
24:28
فَإِنBut iffa-inلَّمْnotlamتَجِدُوا۟you findtajidūفِيهَآin itfīhāأَحَدًۭاanyoneaḥadanفَلَاthen (do) notfalāتَدْخُلُوهَاenter ittadkhulūhāحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāيُؤْذَنَpermission has been givenyu'dhanaلَكُمْ ۖto youlakumوَإِنAnd ifwa-inقِيلَit is saidqīlaلَكُمُto youlakumuٱرْجِعُوا۟Go backir'jiʿūفَٱرْجِعُوا۟ ۖthen go backfa-ir'jiʿūهُوَithuwaأَزْكَىٰ(is) purerazkāلَكُمْ ۚfor youlakumوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuبِمَاof whatbimāتَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūnaعَلِيمٌۭ(is) All-Knowerʿalīmun٢٨
And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back,"1 then go back; it is purer for you. And Allāh is Knowing of what you do.
24:29
لَّيْسَNotlaysaعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumجُنَاحٌ(is) any blamejunāḥunأَنthatanتَدْخُلُوا۟you entertadkhulūبُيُوتًاhousesbuyūtanغَيْرَnotghayraمَسْكُونَةٍۢinhabitedmaskūnatinفِيهَاin itfīhāمَتَـٰعٌۭ(is) a provisionmatāʿunلَّكُمْ ۚfor youlakumوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuيَعْلَمُknowsyaʿlamuمَاwhatتُبْدُونَyou revealtub'dūnaوَمَاand whatwamāتَكْتُمُونَyou concealtaktumūna٢٩
There is no blame upon you for entering houses not inhabited in which there is convenience for you. And Allāh knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
24:30
قُلSayqulلِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَto the believing menlil'mu'minīnaيَغُضُّوا۟they should loweryaghuḍḍūمِنْtheir gazeminأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْtheir gazeabṣārihimوَيَحْفَظُوا۟and they should guardwayaḥfaẓūفُرُوجَهُمْ ۚtheir chastityfurūjahumذَٰلِكَThatdhālikaأَزْكَىٰ(is) purerazkāلَهُمْ ۗfor themlahumإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaخَبِيرٌۢ(is) All-Awarekhabīrunبِمَاof whatbimāيَصْنَعُونَthey doyaṣnaʿūna٣٠
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allāh is [fully] Aware of what they do.
24:31
وَقُلAnd saywaqulلِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِto the believing womenlil'mu'minātiيَغْضُضْنَ(that) they should loweryaghḍuḍ'naمِنْ[of]minأَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّtheir gazeabṣārihinnaوَيَحْفَظْنَand they should guardwayaḥfaẓnaفُرُوجَهُنَّtheir chastityfurūjahunnaوَلَاand notwalāيُبْدِينَ(to) displayyub'dīnaزِينَتَهُنَّtheir adornmentzīnatahunnaإِلَّاexceptillāمَاwhatظَهَرَis apparentẓaharaمِنْهَا ۖof itmin'hāوَلْيَضْرِبْنَAnd let them drawwalyaḍrib'naبِخُمُرِهِنَّtheir head coversbikhumurihinnaعَلَىٰoverʿalāجُيُوبِهِنَّ ۖtheir bosomsjuyūbihinnaوَلَاand notwalāيُبْدِينَ(to) displayyub'dīnaزِينَتَهُنَّtheir adornmentzīnatahunnaإِلَّاexceptillāلِبُعُولَتِهِنَّto their husbandslibuʿūlatihinnaأَوْorawءَابَآئِهِنَّtheir fathersābāihinnaأَوْorawءَابَآءِfathersābāiبُعُولَتِهِنَّ(of) their husbandsbuʿūlatihinnaأَوْorawأَبْنَآئِهِنَّtheir sonsabnāihinnaأَوْorawأَبْنَآءِsonsabnāiبُعُولَتِهِنَّ(of) their husbandsbuʿūlatihinnaأَوْorawإِخْوَٰنِهِنَّtheir brothersikh'wānihinnaأَوْorawبَنِىٓsonsbanīإِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ(of) their brothersikh'wānihinnaأَوْorawبَنِىٓsonsbanīأَخَوَٰتِهِنَّ(of) their sistersakhawātihinnaأَوْorawنِسَآئِهِنَّtheir womennisāihinnaأَوْorawمَاwhatمَلَكَتْpossessmalakatأَيْمَـٰنُهُنَّtheir right handsaymānuhunnaأَوِorawiٱلتَّـٰبِعِينَthe attendantsl-tābiʿīnaغَيْرِhaving no physical desireghayriأُو۟لِىhaving no physical desireulīٱلْإِرْبَةِhaving no physical desirel-ir'batiمِنَamongminaٱلرِّجَالِ[the] menl-rijāliأَوِorawiٱلطِّفْلِ[the] childrenl-ṭif'liٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīnaلَمْ(are) notlamيَظْهَرُوا۟awareyaẓharūعَلَىٰofʿalāعَوْرَٰتِprivate aspectsʿawrātiٱلنِّسَآءِ ۖ(of) the womenl-nisāiوَلَاAnd notwalāيَضْرِبْنَlet them stampyaḍrib'naبِأَرْجُلِهِنَّtheir feetbi-arjulihinnaلِيُعْلَمَto make knownliyuʿ'lamaمَاwhatيُخْفِينَthey concealyukh'fīnaمِنofminزِينَتِهِنَّ ۚtheir adornmentzīnatihinnaوَتُوبُوٓا۟And turnwatūbūإِلَىtoilāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiجَمِيعًاaltogetherjamīʿanأَيُّهَO believersayyuhaٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَO believersl-mu'minūnaلَعَلَّكُمْSo that you maylaʿallakumتُفْلِحُونَsucceedtuf'liḥūna٣١
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
24:32
وَأَنكِحُوا۟And marrywa-ankiḥūٱلْأَيَـٰمَىٰthe singlel-ayāmāمِنكُمْamong youminkumوَٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَand the righteouswal-ṣāliḥīnaمِنْamongminعِبَادِكُمْyour male slavesʿibādikumوَإِمَآئِكُمْ ۚand your female slaveswa-imāikumإِنIfinيَكُونُوا۟they areyakūnūفُقَرَآءَpoorfuqarāaيُغْنِهِمُAllah will enrich themyugh'nihimuٱللَّهُAllah will enrich theml-lahuمِنfromminفَضْلِهِۦ ۗHis BountyfaḍlihiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuوَٰسِعٌ(is) All-EncompassingwāsiʿunعَلِيمٌۭAll-Knowingʿalīmun٣٢
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allāh will enrich them from His bounty, and Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
24:33
وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِAnd let be chastewalyastaʿfifiٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaلَا(do) notيَجِدُونَfindyajidūnaنِكَاحًا(means for) marriagenikāḥanحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāيُغْنِيَهُمُAllah enriches themyugh'niyahumuٱللَّهُAllah enriches theml-lahuمِنfromminفَضْلِهِۦ ۗHis BountyfaḍlihiوَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīnaيَبْتَغُونَseekyabtaghūnaٱلْكِتَـٰبَthe writingl-kitābaمِمَّاfrom (those) whommimmāمَلَكَتْpossessmalakatأَيْمَـٰنُكُمْyour right handsaymānukumفَكَاتِبُوهُمْthen give them (the) writingfakātibūhumإِنْifinعَلِمْتُمْyou knowʿalim'tumفِيهِمْin themfīhimخَيْرًۭا ۖany goodkhayranوَءَاتُوهُمand give themwaātūhumمِّنfromminمَّالِthe wealth of Allahmāliٱللَّهِthe wealth of Allahl-lahiٱلَّذِىٓwhichalladhīءَاتَىٰكُمْ ۚHe has given youātākumوَلَاAnd (do) notwalāتُكْرِهُوا۟compeltuk'rihūفَتَيَـٰتِكُمْyour slave girlsfatayātikumعَلَىtoʿalāٱلْبِغَآءِ[the] prostitutionl-bighāiإِنْifinأَرَدْنَthey desirearadnaتَحَصُّنًۭاchastitytaḥaṣṣunanلِّتَبْتَغُوا۟that you may seeklitabtaghūعَرَضَtemporary gainʿaraḍaٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifel-ḥayatiٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ(of) the worldl-dun'yāوَمَنAnd whoeverwamanيُكْرِههُّنَّcompels themyuk'rihhunnaفَإِنَّthen indeedfa-innaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaمِنۢafterminبَعْدِafterbaʿdiإِكْرَٰهِهِنَّtheir compulsionik'rāhihinnaغَفُورٌۭ(is) Oft-ForgivingghafūrunرَّحِيمٌۭMost Mercifulraḥīmun٣٣
But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allāh enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allāh which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allāh is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful.
24:34
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَنزَلْنَآWe have sent downanzalnāإِلَيْكُمْto youilaykumءَايَـٰتٍۢVersesāyātinمُّبَيِّنَـٰتٍۢclearmubayyinātinوَمَثَلًۭاand an examplewamathalanمِّنَofminaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaخَلَوْا۟passed awaykhalawمِنbefore youminقَبْلِكُمْbefore youqablikumوَمَوْعِظَةًۭand an admonitionwamawʿiẓatanلِّلْمُتَّقِينَfor those who fear (Allah)lil'muttaqīna٣٤
And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses and examples from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear Allāh.
24:35
۞ ٱللَّهُAllahal-lahuنُورُ(is the) Lightnūruٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚand the earthwal-arḍiمَثَلُ(The) examplemathaluنُورِهِۦ(of) His Lightnūrihiكَمِشْكَوٰةٍۢ(is) like a nichekamish'katinفِيهَاin itfīhāمِصْبَاحٌ ۖ(is) a lampmiṣ'bāḥunٱلْمِصْبَاحُthe lampl-miṣ'bāḥuفِى(is) inزُجَاجَةٍ ۖa glasszujājatinٱلزُّجَاجَةُthe glassl-zujājatuكَأَنَّهَاas if it wereka-annahāكَوْكَبٌۭa starkawkabunدُرِّىٌّۭbrilliantdurriyyunيُوقَدُ(which) is lityūqaduمِنfromminشَجَرَةٍۢa treeshajaratinمُّبَـٰرَكَةٍۢblessed mubārakatinزَيْتُونَةٍۢan olivezaytūnatinلَّاnotشَرْقِيَّةٍۢ(of the) eastsharqiyyatinوَلَاand notwalāغَرْبِيَّةٍۢ(of the) westgharbiyyatinيَكَادُwould almostyakāduزَيْتُهَاits oilzaytuhāيُضِىٓءُglowyuḍīuوَلَوْeven ifwalawلَمْnotlamتَمْسَسْهُtouched ittamsashuنَارٌۭ ۚfirenārunنُّورٌLightnūrunعَلَىٰuponʿalāنُورٍۢ ۗLightnūrinيَهْدِىAllah guidesyahdīٱللَّهُAllah guidesl-lahuلِنُورِهِۦto His Lightlinūrihiمَنwhommanيَشَآءُ ۚHe willsyashāuوَيَضْرِبُAnd Allah sets forthwayaḍribuٱللَّهُAnd Allah sets forthl-lahuٱلْأَمْثَـٰلَthe examplesl-amthālaلِلنَّاسِ ۗfor the mankindlilnnāsiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuبِكُلِّof everybikulliشَىْءٍthingshayinعَلِيمٌۭ(is) All-Knowerʿalīmun٣٥
Allāh is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His light whom He wills. And Allāh presents examples for the people, and Allāh is Knowing of all things.
24:36
فِىInبُيُوتٍhousesbuyūtinأَذِنَ(which) Allah orderedadhinaٱللَّهُ(which) Allah orderedl-lahuأَنthatanتُرْفَعَthey be raisedtur'faʿaوَيُذْكَرَand be mentionedwayudh'karaفِيهَاin themfīhāٱسْمُهُۥHis nameus'muhuيُسَبِّحُGlorifyyusabbiḥuلَهُۥ[to] Himlahuفِيهَاin themfīhāبِٱلْغُدُوِّin the morningsbil-ghuduwiوَٱلْـَٔاصَالِand (in) the eveningswal-āṣāli٣٦
[Such niches are] in houses [i.e., mosques] which Allāh has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned [i.e., praised] therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings
24:37
رِجَالٌۭMen rijālunلَّاnotتُلْهِيهِمْdistracts themtul'hīhimتِجَـٰرَةٌۭtradetijāratunوَلَاand notwalāبَيْعٌsalebayʿunعَنfromʿanذِكْرِ(the) remembrance of Allahdhik'riٱللَّهِ(the) remembrance of Allahl-lahiوَإِقَامِand (from) establishingwa-iqāmiٱلصَّلَوٰةِthe prayerl-ṣalatiوَإِيتَآءِand givingwaītāiٱلزَّكَوٰةِ ۙzakahl-zakatiيَخَافُونَThey fearyakhāfūnaيَوْمًۭاa Dayyawmanتَتَقَلَّبُwill turn abouttataqallabuفِيهِthereinfīhiٱلْقُلُوبُthe heartsl-qulūbuوَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُand the eyeswal-abṣāru٣٧
[Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allāh and performance of prayer and giving of zakāh. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about -
24:38
لِيَجْزِيَهُمُThat Allah may reward themliyajziyahumuٱللَّهُThat Allah may reward theml-lahuأَحْسَنَ(with the) bestaḥsanaمَا(of) whatعَمِلُوا۟they didʿamilūوَيَزِيدَهُمand increase themwayazīdahumمِّنfromminفَضْلِهِۦ ۗHis BountyfaḍlihiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuيَرْزُقُprovidesyarzuquمَنwhommanيَشَآءُHe willsyashāuبِغَيْرِwithoutbighayriحِسَابٍۢmeasureḥisābin٣٨
That Allāh may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And Allāh gives provision to whom He wills without account [i.e., limit].
24:39
وَٱلَّذِينَBut those whowa-alladhīnaكَفَرُوٓا۟disbelievekafarūأَعْمَـٰلُهُمْtheir deedsaʿmāluhumكَسَرَابٍۭ(are) like a miragekasarābinبِقِيعَةٍۢin a lowlandbiqīʿatinيَحْسَبُهُthinks ityaḥsabuhuٱلظَّمْـَٔانُthe thirsty onel-ẓamānuمَآءً(to be) watermāanحَتَّىٰٓuntilḥattāإِذَاwhenidhāجَآءَهُۥhe comes to itjāahuلَمْnotlamيَجِدْهُhe finds ityajid'huشَيْـًۭٔا(to be) anythingshayanوَوَجَدَbut he findswawajadaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaعِندَهُۥbefore himʿindahuفَوَفَّىٰهُHe will pay him in fullfawaffāhuحِسَابَهُۥ ۗhis dueḥisābahuوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuسَرِيعُ(is) swiftsarīʿuٱلْحِسَابِ(in) the accountl-ḥisābi٣٩
But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allāh before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allāh is swift in account.
24:40
أَوْOrawكَظُلُمَـٰتٍۢ(is) like (the) darkness[es]kaẓulumātinفِىinبَحْرٍۢa seabaḥrinلُّجِّىٍّۢdeeplujjiyyinيَغْشَىٰهُcovers ityaghshāhuمَوْجٌۭa wavemawjunمِّنon itminفَوْقِهِۦon itfawqihiمَوْجٌۭa wavemawjunمِّنon itminفَوْقِهِۦon itfawqihiسَحَابٌۭ ۚa cloudsaḥābunظُلُمَـٰتٌۢdarkness[es]ẓulumātunبَعْضُهَاsome of itbaʿḍuhāفَوْقَonfawqaبَعْضٍothersbaʿḍinإِذَآWhenidhāأَخْرَجَhe puts outakhrajaيَدَهُۥhis handyadahuلَمْhardlylamيَكَدْhardlyyakadيَرَىٰهَا ۗhe (can) see ityarāhāوَمَنAnd (for) whomwamanلَّمْnotlamيَجْعَلِAllah (has) madeyajʿaliٱللَّهُAllah (has) madel-lahuلَهُۥfor himlahuنُورًۭاa lightnūranفَمَاthen notfamāلَهُۥfor himlahuمِن(is) anyminنُّورٍlightnūrin٤٠
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allāh has not granted light - for him there is no light.
24:41
أَلَمْDo notalamتَرَyou seetaraأَنَّthatannaٱللَّهَAllah l-lahaيُسَبِّحُglorifyyusabbiḥuلَهُۥHimlahuمَنwhoevermanفِى(is) inٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍiوَٱلطَّيْرُand the birdswal-ṭayruصَـٰٓفَّـٰتٍۢ ۖ(with) wings outspreadṣāffātinكُلٌّۭEach onekullunقَدْverilyqadعَلِمَknowsʿalimaصَلَاتَهُۥits prayerṣalātahuوَتَسْبِيحَهُۥ ۗand its glorificationwatasbīḥahuوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuعَلِيمٌۢ(is) All-Knowerʿalīmunبِمَاof whatbimāيَفْعَلُونَthey doyafʿalūna٤١
Do you not see that Allāh is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allāh is Knowing of what they do.
24:42
وَلِلَّهِAnd to Allah (belongs)walillahiمُلْكُ(the) dominionmul'kuٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖand the earthwal-arḍiوَإِلَىAnd towa-ilāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiٱلْمَصِيرُ(is) the destinationl-maṣīru٤٢
And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allāh is the destination.
24:43
أَلَمْDo notalamتَرَyou seetaraأَنَّthatannaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaيُزْجِىdrivesyuz'jīسَحَابًۭاcloudssaḥābanثُمَّthenthummaيُؤَلِّفُjoinsyu-allifuبَيْنَهُۥbetween thembaynahuثُمَّthenthummaيَجْعَلُهُۥmakes themyajʿaluhuرُكَامًۭا(into) a massrukāmanفَتَرَىthen you seefatarāٱلْوَدْقَthe rainl-wadqaيَخْرُجُcome forthyakhrujuمِنْfromminخِلَـٰلِهِۦtheir midstkhilālihiوَيُنَزِّلُAnd He sends downwayunazziluمِنَfromminaٱلسَّمَآءِ(the) skyl-samāiمِن[from]minجِبَالٍۢmountainsjibālinفِيهَاwithin itfīhāمِنۢ[of]minبَرَدٍۢ(is) hailbaradinفَيُصِيبُand He strikesfayuṣībuبِهِۦwith itbihiمَنwhommanيَشَآءُHe willsyashāuوَيَصْرِفُهُۥand averts itwayaṣrifuhuعَنfromʿanمَّنwhommanيَشَآءُ ۖHe willsyashāuيَكَادُNearlyyakāduسَنَا(the) flashsanāبَرْقِهِۦ(of) its lightingbarqihiيَذْهَبُtakes awayyadhhabuبِٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِthe sightbil-abṣāri٤٣
Do you not see that Allāh drives clouds? Then He brings them together; then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains [of clouds] within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away the eyesight.
24:44
يُقَلِّبُAllah alternatesyuqallibuٱللَّهُAllah alternatesl-lahuٱلَّيْلَthe nightal-laylaوَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚand the daywal-nahāraإِنَّIndeedinnaفِىinذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَعِبْرَةًۭsurely is a lessonlaʿib'ratanلِّأُو۟لِىfor those who have visionli-ulīٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِfor those who have visionl-abṣāri٤٤
Allāh alternates the night and the day. Indeed in that is a lesson for those who have vision.
24:45
وَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuخَلَقَcreatedkhalaqaكُلَّeverykullaدَآبَّةٍۢmoving creaturedābbatinمِّنfromminمَّآءٍۢ ۖwatermāinفَمِنْهُمOf themfamin'humمَّن(is a kind) whomanيَمْشِىwalksyamshīعَلَىٰonʿalāبَطْنِهِۦits bellybaṭnihiوَمِنْهُمand of themwamin'humمَّن(is a kind) whomanيَمْشِىwalksyamshīعَلَىٰonʿalāرِجْلَيْنِtwo legsrij'layniوَمِنْهُمand of themwamin'humمَّن(is a kind) whomanيَمْشِىwalksyamshīعَلَىٰٓonʿalāأَرْبَعٍۢ ۚfourarbaʿinيَخْلُقُAllah createsyakhluquٱللَّهُAllah createsl-lahuمَاwhatيَشَآءُ ۚHe willsyashāuإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaعَلَىٰonʿalāكُلِّeverykulliشَىْءٍۢthingshayinقَدِيرٌۭ(is) All-Powerfulqadīrun٤٥
Allāh has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allāh creates what He wills. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
24:46
لَّقَدْVerilylaqadأَنزَلْنَآWe have sent downanzalnāءَايَـٰتٍۢVersesāyātinمُّبَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۚclearmubayyinātinوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuيَهْدِىguidesyahdīمَنwhommanيَشَآءُHe willsyashāuإِلَىٰtoilāصِرَٰطٍۢa pathṣirāṭinمُّسْتَقِيمٍۢstraightmus'taqīmin٤٦
We have certainly sent down distinct verses. And Allāh guides whom He wills to a straight path.
24:47
وَيَقُولُونَAnd they saywayaqūlūnaءَامَنَّاWe believeāmannāبِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahiوَبِٱلرَّسُولِand in the Messengerwabil-rasūliوَأَطَعْنَاand we obeywa-aṭaʿnāثُمَّThenthummaيَتَوَلَّىٰturns awayyatawallāفَرِيقٌۭa partyfarīqunمِّنْهُمof themmin'humمِّنۢafterminبَعْدِafterbaʿdiذَٰلِكَ ۚthatdhālikaوَمَآAnd notwamāأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthoseulāikaبِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ(are) believersbil-mu'minīna٤٧
But they [i.e., the hypocrites] say, "We have believed in Allāh and in the Messenger, and we obey"; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers.
24:48
وَإِذَاAnd whenwa-idhāدُعُوٓا۟they are calledduʿūإِلَىtoilāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiوَرَسُولِهِۦand His Messengerwarasūlihiلِيَحْكُمَto judgeliyaḥkumaبَيْنَهُمْbetween thembaynahumإِذَاbeholdidhāفَرِيقٌۭa partyfarīqunمِّنْهُمof themmin'humمُّعْرِضُونَ(is) aversemuʿ'riḍūna٤٨
And when they are called to [the words of] Allāh and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside [in refusal].
24:49
وَإِنBut ifwa-inيَكُنisyakunلَّهُمُwith themlahumuٱلْحَقُّthe truthl-ḥaquيَأْتُوٓا۟they comeyatūإِلَيْهِto himilayhiمُذْعِنِينَ(as) promptly obedientmudh'ʿinīna٤٩
But if the right is theirs, they come to him in prompt obedience.
24:50
أَفِىIs (there) inafīقُلُوبِهِمtheir heartsqulūbihimمَّرَضٌa diseasemaraḍunأَمِoramiٱرْتَابُوٓا۟do they doubtir'tābūأَمْoramيَخَافُونَthey fearyakhāfūnaأَنthatanيَحِيفَAllah will be unjustyaḥīfaٱللَّهُAllah will be unjustl-lahuعَلَيْهِمْto themʿalayhimوَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚand His MessengerwarasūluhuبَلْNaybalأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthoseulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ(are) the wrongdoersl-ẓālimūna٥٠
Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that Allāh will be unjust to them, or His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].
24:51
إِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāكَانَiskānaقَوْلَ(the) statementqawlaٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ(of) the believersl-mu'minīnaإِذَاwhenidhāدُعُوٓا۟they are calledduʿūإِلَىtoilāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiوَرَسُولِهِۦand His Messengerwarasūlihiلِيَحْكُمَto judgeliyaḥkumaبَيْنَهُمْbetween thembaynahumأَن(is) thatanيَقُولُوا۟they sayyaqūlūسَمِعْنَاWe hearsamiʿ'nāوَأَطَعْنَا ۚand we obeywa-aṭaʿnāوَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَAnd thosewa-ulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ(are) the successfull-muf'liḥūna٥١
The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allāh and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, "We hear and we obey." And those are the successful.
24:52
وَمَنAnd whoeverwamanيُطِعِobeysyuṭiʿiٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaوَرَسُولَهُۥand His Messengerwarasūlahuوَيَخْشَand fearswayakhshaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaوَيَتَّقْهِand (is) conscious of Himwayattaqhiفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلْفَآئِزُونَ(are) the successful onesl-fāizūna٥٢
And whoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger and fears Allāh and is conscious of Him - it is those who are the attainers.
24:53
۞ وَأَقْسَمُوا۟And they swearwa-aqsamūبِٱللَّهِby Allahbil-lahiجَهْدَstrongjahdaأَيْمَـٰنِهِمْtheir oathsaymānihimلَئِنْthat ifla-inأَمَرْتَهُمْyou ordered themamartahumلَيَخْرُجُنَّ ۖsurely they (would) go forthlayakhrujunnaقُلSayqulلَّا(Do) notتُقْسِمُوا۟ ۖsweartuq'simūطَاعَةٌۭObedienceṭāʿatunمَّعْرُوفَةٌ ۚ(is) knownmaʿrūfatunإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaخَبِيرٌۢ(is) All-Awarekhabīrunبِمَاof whatbimāتَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna٥٣
And they swear by Allāh their strongest oaths that if you ordered them, they would go forth [in Allāh's cause]. Say, "Do not swear. [Such] obedience is known. Indeed, Allāh is [fully] Aware of that which you do."
24:54
قُلْSayqulأَطِيعُوا۟ObeyaṭīʿūٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaوَأَطِيعُوا۟and obeywa-aṭīʿūٱلرَّسُولَ ۖthe Messengerl-rasūlaفَإِنbut iffa-inتَوَلَّوْا۟you turn awaytawallawفَإِنَّمَاthen onlyfa-innamāعَلَيْهِupon himʿalayhiمَا(is) whatحُمِّلَ(is) placed on himḥummilaوَعَلَيْكُمand on youwaʿalaykumمَّا(is) whatحُمِّلْتُمْ ۖ(is) placed on youḥummil'tumوَإِنAnd ifwa-inتُطِيعُوهُyou obey himtuṭīʿūhuتَهْتَدُوا۟ ۚyou will be guidedtahtadūوَمَاAnd notwamāعَلَى(is) onʿalāٱلرَّسُولِthe Messengerl-rasūliإِلَّاexceptillāٱلْبَلَـٰغُthe conveyancel-balāghuٱلْمُبِينُ[the] clearl-mubīnu٥٤
Say, "Obey Allāh and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification."
24:55
وَعَدَAllah (has) promisedwaʿadaٱللَّهُAllah (has) promisedl-lahuٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūمِنكُمْamong youminkumوَعَمِلُوا۟and dowaʿamilūٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deedsl-ṣāliḥātiلَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْsurely He will grant them successionlayastakhlifannahumفِىinٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiكَمَاaskamāٱسْتَخْلَفَHe gave successionis'takhlafaٱلَّذِينَto those whoalladhīnaمِن(were) before themminقَبْلِهِمْ(were) before themqablihimوَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّand that He will surely establishwalayumakkinannaلَهُمْfor themlahumدِينَهُمُtheir religiondīnahumuٱلَّذِىwhichalladhīٱرْتَضَىٰHe has approvedir'taḍāلَهُمْfor themlahumوَلَيُبَدِّلَنَّهُمand surely He will change for themwalayubaddilannahumمِّنۢafterminبَعْدِafterbaʿdiخَوْفِهِمْtheir fearkhawfihimأَمْنًۭا ۚsecurityamnanيَعْبُدُونَنِى(for) they worship Meyaʿbudūnanīلَاnotيُشْرِكُونَthey associateyush'rikūnaبِىwith Meشَيْـًۭٔا ۚanythingshayanوَمَنBut whoeverwamanكَفَرَdisbelievedkafaraبَعْدَafterbaʿdaذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaهُمُ[they]humuٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ(are) the defiantly disobedientl-fāsiqūna٥٥
Allāh has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that - then those are the defiantly disobedient.
24:56
وَأَقِيمُوا۟And establishwa-aqīmūٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayerl-ṣalataوَءَاتُوا۟and givewaātūٱلزَّكَوٰةَzakahl-zakataوَأَطِيعُوا۟and obeywa-aṭīʿūٱلرَّسُولَthe Messengerl-rasūlaلَعَلَّكُمْso that you maylaʿallakumتُرْحَمُونَreceive mercytur'ḥamūna٥٦
And establish prayer and give zakāh and obey the Messenger - that you may receive mercy.
24:57
لَا(Do) notتَحْسَبَنَّthinktaḥsabannaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievekafarūمُعْجِزِينَ(can) escapemuʿ'jizīnaفِىinٱلْأَرْضِ ۚthe earthl-arḍiوَمَأْوَىٰهُمُAnd their abodewamawāhumuٱلنَّارُ ۖ(will be) the Firel-nāruوَلَبِئْسَand wretched iswalabi'saٱلْمَصِيرُthe destinationl-maṣīru٥٧
Never think that the disbelievers are causing failure [to Allāh] upon the earth. Their refuge will be the Fire - and how wretched the destination.
24:58
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you who believeyāayyuhāٱلَّذِينَO you who believealladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟O you who believeāmanūلِيَسْتَـْٔذِنكُمُLet ask your permissionliyastadhinkumuٱلَّذِينَthose whomalladhīnaمَلَكَتْpossessmalakatأَيْمَـٰنُكُمْyour right handsaymānukumوَٱلَّذِينَand those whowa-alladhīnaلَمْ(have) notlamيَبْلُغُوا۟reachedyablughūٱلْحُلُمَpubertyl-ḥulumaمِنكُمْamong youminkumثَلَـٰثَ(at) threethalāthaمَرَّٰتٍۢ ۚtimesmarrātinمِّنbeforeminقَبْلِbeforeqabliصَلَوٰةِ(the) prayerṣalatiٱلْفَجْرِ(of) dawnl-fajriوَحِينَand whenwaḥīnaتَضَعُونَyou put asidetaḍaʿūnaثِيَابَكُمyour garmentsthiyābakumمِّنَatminaٱلظَّهِيرَةِnoonl-ẓahīratiوَمِنۢand afterwaminبَعْدِand afterbaʿdiصَلَوٰةِ(the) prayerṣalatiٱلْعِشَآءِ ۚ(of) nightl-ʿishāiثَلَـٰثُ(These) threethalāthuعَوْرَٰتٍۢ(are) times of privacyʿawrātinلَّكُمْ ۚfor youlakumلَيْسَNotlaysaعَلَيْكُمْon youʿalaykumوَلَاand notwalāعَلَيْهِمْon themʿalayhimجُنَاحٌۢany blamejunāḥunبَعْدَهُنَّ ۚafter thatbaʿdahunnaطَوَّٰفُونَ(as) moving aboutṭawwāfūnaعَلَيْكُمamong youʿalaykumبَعْضُكُمْsome of youbaʿḍukumعَلَىٰamongʿalāبَعْضٍۢ ۚothersbaʿḍinكَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālikaيُبَيِّنُAllah makes clearyubayyinuٱللَّهُAllah makes clearl-lahuلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۗthe Versesl-āyātiوَٱللَّهُand Allahwal-lahuعَلِيمٌ(is) All-KnowerʿalīmunحَكِيمٌۭAll-Wiseḥakīmun٥٨
O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allāh make clear to you the verses [i.e., His ordinances]; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
24:59
وَإِذَاAnd whenwa-idhāبَلَغَreachbalaghaٱلْأَطْفَـٰلُthe childrenl-aṭfāluمِنكُمُamong youminkumuٱلْحُلُمَthe pubertyl-ḥulumaفَلْيَسْتَـْٔذِنُوا۟then let them ask permissionfalyastadhinūكَمَاaskamāٱسْتَـْٔذَنَasked permissionis'tadhanaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaمِن(were) before themminقَبْلِهِمْ ۚ(were) before themqablihimكَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālikaيُبَيِّنُAllah makes clearyubayyinuٱللَّهُAllah makes clearl-lahuلَكُمْfor youlakumءَايَـٰتِهِۦ ۗHis VersesāyātihiوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuعَلِيمٌ(is) All-KnowerʿalīmunحَكِيمٌۭAll-Wiseḥakīmun٥٩
And when the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission [at all times] as those before them have done. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
24:60
وَٱلْقَوَٰعِدُAnd postmenopausalwal-qawāʿiduمِنَamongminaٱلنِّسَآءِthe womenl-nisāiٱلَّـٰتِىwhoallātīلَا(do) notيَرْجُونَhave desireyarjūnaنِكَاحًۭا(for) marriagenikāḥanفَلَيْسَthen not isfalaysaعَلَيْهِنَّon themʿalayhinnaجُنَاحٌany blamejunāḥunأَنthatanيَضَعْنَthey put asideyaḍaʿnaثِيَابَهُنَّtheir (outer) garmentsthiyābahunnaغَيْرَnotghayraمُتَبَرِّجَـٰتٍۭdisplayingmutabarrijātinبِزِينَةٍۢ ۖtheir adornmentbizīnatinوَأَنAnd thatwa-anيَسْتَعْفِفْنَthey modestly refrainyastaʿfif'naخَيْرٌۭ(is) betterkhayrunلَّهُنَّ ۗfor themlahunnaوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuسَمِيعٌ(is) All-HearersamīʿunعَلِيمٌۭAll-Knowerʿalīmun٦٠
And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
24:61
لَّيْسَNot islaysaعَلَىonʿalāٱلْأَعْمَىٰthe blindl-aʿmāحَرَجٌۭany blameḥarajunوَلَاand notwalāعَلَىonʿalāٱلْأَعْرَجِthe lamel-aʿrajiحَرَجٌۭany blameḥarajunوَلَاand notwalāعَلَىonʿalāٱلْمَرِيضِthe sickl-marīḍiحَرَجٌۭany blameḥarajunوَلَاand notwalāعَلَىٰٓonʿalāأَنفُسِكُمْyourselvesanfusikumأَنthatanتَأْكُلُوا۟you eattakulūمِنۢfromminبُيُوتِكُمْyour housesbuyūtikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiءَابَآئِكُمْ(of) your fathersābāikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiأُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ(of) your mothersummahātikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiإِخْوَٰنِكُمْ(of) your brothersikh'wānikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiأَخَوَٰتِكُمْ(of) your sistersakhawātikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiأَعْمَـٰمِكُمْ(of) your paternal unclesaʿmāmikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiعَمَّـٰتِكُمْ(of) your paternal auntsʿammātikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiأَخْوَٰلِكُمْ(of) your maternal unclesakhwālikumأَوْorawبُيُوتِhousesbuyūtiخَـٰلَـٰتِكُمْ(of) your maternal auntskhālātikumأَوْorawمَاwhatمَلَكْتُمyou possessmalaktumمَّفَاتِحَهُۥٓits keysmafātiḥahuأَوْorawصَدِيقِكُمْ ۚyour friendṣadīqikumلَيْسَNot islaysaعَلَيْكُمْon youʿalaykumجُنَاحٌany blamejunāḥunأَنthatanتَأْكُلُوا۟you eattakulūجَمِيعًاtogetherjamīʿanأَوْorawأَشْتَاتًۭا ۚseparatelyashtātanفَإِذَاBut whenfa-idhāدَخَلْتُمyou enterdakhaltumبُيُوتًۭاhousesbuyūtanفَسَلِّمُوا۟then greetfasallimūعَلَىٰٓ[on]ʿalāأَنفُسِكُمْyourselvesanfusikumتَحِيَّةًۭa greetingtaḥiyyatanمِّنْfromminعِندِfromʿindiٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiمُبَـٰرَكَةًۭblessedmubārakatanطَيِّبَةًۭ ۚ(and) goodṭayyibatanكَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālikaيُبَيِّنُAllah makes clearyubayyinuٱللَّهُAllah makes clearl-lahuلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِthe Versesl-āyātiلَعَلَّكُمْso that you maylaʿallakumتَعْقِلُونَunderstandtaʿqilūna٦١
There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allāh, blessed and good. Thus does Allāh make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.
24:62
إِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersl-mu'minūnaٱلَّذِينَ(are) those whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūبِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahiوَرَسُولِهِۦand His Messengerwarasūlihiوَإِذَاand whenwa-idhāكَانُوا۟they arekānūمَعَهُۥwith himmaʿahuعَلَىٰٓforʿalāأَمْرٍۢa matteramrinجَامِعٍۢ(of) collective actionjāmiʿinلَّمْnotlamيَذْهَبُوا۟they goyadhhabūحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāيَسْتَـْٔذِنُوهُ ۚthey (have) asked his permissionyastadhinūhuإِنَّIndeedinnaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaيَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَask your permissionyastadhinūnakaأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthoseulāikaٱلَّذِينَ[those who]alladhīnaيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūnaبِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahiوَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚand His MessengerwarasūlihiفَإِذَاSo whenfa-idhāٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَthey ask your permissionis'tadhanūkaلِبَعْضِfor somelibaʿḍiشَأْنِهِمْaffair of theirsshanihimفَأْذَنthen give permissionfadhanلِّمَنto whomlimanشِئْتَyou willshi'taمِنْهُمْamong themmin'humوَٱسْتَغْفِرْand ask forgivenesswa-is'taghfirلَهُمُfor themlahumuٱللَّهَ ۚ(of) Allahl-lahaإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaغَفُورٌۭ(is) Oft-ForgivingghafūrunرَّحِيمٌۭMost Mercifulraḥīmun٦٢
The believers are only those who believe in Allāh and His Messenger and, when they are [meeting] with him for a matter of common interest, do not depart until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission, [O Muḥammad] - those are the ones who believe in Allāh and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission due to something of their affairs, then give permission to whom you will among them and ask forgiveness for them of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
24:63
لَّا(Do) notتَجْعَلُوا۟maketajʿalūدُعَآءَ(the) callingduʿāaٱلرَّسُولِ(of) the Messengerl-rasūliبَيْنَكُمْamong youbaynakumكَدُعَآءِas (the) callkaduʿāiبَعْضِكُم(of) some of youbaʿḍikumبَعْضًۭا ۚ(to) othersbaʿḍanقَدْVerilyqadيَعْلَمُAllah knowsyaʿlamuٱللَّهُAllah knowsl-lahuٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaيَتَسَلَّلُونَslip awayyatasallalūnaمِنكُمْamong youminkumلِوَاذًۭا ۚunder shelterliwādhanفَلْيَحْذَرِSo let bewarefalyaḥdhariٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaيُخَالِفُونَopposeyukhālifūnaعَنْ[from]ʿanأَمْرِهِۦٓhis ordersamrihiأَنlestanتُصِيبَهُمْbefalls themtuṣībahumفِتْنَةٌa trialfit'natunأَوْorawيُصِيبَهُمْbefalls themyuṣībahumعَذَابٌa punishmentʿadhābunأَلِيمٌpainfulalīmun٦٣
Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allāh knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet's] order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.
24:64
أَلَآNo doubtalāإِنَّIndeedinnaلِلَّهِto Allah (belongs)lillahiمَاwhateverفِى(is) inٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖand the earthwal-arḍiقَدْVerilyqadيَعْلَمُHe knowsyaʿlamuمَآwhatأَنتُمْyouantumعَلَيْهِ(are) on [it]ʿalayhiوَيَوْمَAnd (the) Daywayawmaيُرْجَعُونَthey will be returnedyur'jaʿūnaإِلَيْهِto Himilayhiفَيُنَبِّئُهُمthen He will inform themfayunabbi-uhumبِمَاof whatbimāعَمِلُوا۟ ۗthey didʿamilūوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuبِكُلِّof everybikulliشَىْءٍthingshayinعَلِيمٌۢ(is) All-Knowerʿalīmun٦٤
Unquestionably, to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Already He knows that upon which you [stand]1 and [knows] the Day when they will be returned to Him and He will inform them of what they have done. And Allāh is Knowing of all things.
