Surah Ibrahim (ابراهيم) is chapter 14 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 52 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
14:1
الٓر ۚAlif Laam Raalif-lam-raكِتَـٰبٌA Bookkitābunأَنزَلْنَـٰهُwhich We have revealedanzalnāhuإِلَيْكَto youilaykaلِتُخْرِجَso that you may bring outlitukh'rijaٱلنَّاسَthe mankindl-nāsaمِنَfromminaٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِthe darkness[es]l-ẓulumātiإِلَىtoilāٱلنُّورِthe lightl-nūriبِإِذْنِby the permissionbi-idh'niرَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lordrabbihimإِلَىٰtoilāصِرَٰطِthe Pathṣirāṭiٱلْعَزِيزِ(of) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīziٱلْحَمِيدِthe Praiseworthyl-ḥamīdi١
Alif, Lām, Rā. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -
14:2
ٱللَّهِAllahal-lahiٱلَّذِى(is) the Onealladhīلَهُۥto Him (belongs)lahuمَاwhatevermāفِى(is) infīٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَمَاand whateverwamāفِى(is) infīٱلْأَرْضِ ۗthe earthl-arḍiوَوَيْلٌۭAnd woewawaylunلِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَto the disbelieverslil'kāfirīnaمِنْfromminعَذَابٍۢthe punishmentʿadhābinشَدِيدٍsevereshadīdin٢
Allāh, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe [i.e., destruction] to the disbelievers from a severe punishment -
14:3
ٱلَّذِينَThose whoalladhīnaيَسْتَحِبُّونَlove moreyastaḥibbūnaٱلْحَيَوٰةَthe lifel-ḥayataٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yāعَلَىthanʿalāٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِthe Hereafterl-ākhiratiوَيَصُدُّونَand hinderwayaṣuddūnaعَنfromʿanسَبِيلِ(the) Pathsabīliٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiوَيَبْغُونَهَاand seek in itwayabghūnahāعِوَجًا ۚcrookednessʿiwajanأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthoseulāikaفِى[in]fīضَلَـٰلٍۭ(are) far astrayḍalālinبَعِيدٍۢ(are) far astraybaʿīdin٣
The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allāh, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. Those are in extreme error.
14:4
وَمَآAnd notwamāأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnāمِنanyminرَّسُولٍMessengerrasūlinإِلَّاexceptillāبِلِسَانِwith the languagebilisāniقَوْمِهِۦ(of) his peopleqawmihiلِيُبَيِّنَso that he might make clearliyubayyinaلَهُمْ ۖfor themlahumفَيُضِلُّThen Allah lets go astrayfayuḍilluٱللَّهُThen Allah lets go astrayl-lahuمَنwhommanيَشَآءُHe willsyashāuوَيَهْدِىand guideswayahdīمَنwhommanيَشَآءُ ۚHe willsyashāuوَهُوَAnd Hewahuwaٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīzuٱلْحَكِيمُthe All-Wisel-ḥakīmu٤
And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allāh sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
14:5
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnāمُوسَىٰMusamūsāبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآwith Our SignsbiāyātināأَنْthatanأَخْرِجْBring outakhrijقَوْمَكَyour peopleqawmakaمِنَfromminaٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِthe darkness[es]l-ẓulumātiإِلَىtoilāٱلنُّورِthe lightl-nūriوَذَكِّرْهُمAnd remind themwadhakkir'humبِأَيَّىٰمِof the daysbi-ayyāmiٱللَّهِ ۚ(of) Allahl-lahiإِنَّIndeedinnaفِىinfīذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) the signslaāyātinلِّكُلِّfor everyonelikulliصَبَّارٍۢpatientṣabbārinشَكُورٍۢand thankfulshakūrin٥
And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allāh." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
14:6
وَإِذْAnd whenwa-idhقَالَsaidqālaمُوسَىٰMusamūsāلِقَوْمِهِto his peopleliqawmihiٱذْكُرُوا۟Rememberudh'kurūنِعْمَةَ(the) Favor of Allahniʿ'mataٱللَّهِ(the) Favor of Allahl-lahiعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumإِذْwhenidhأَنجَىٰكُمHe saved youanjākumمِّنْfromminءَالِ(the) peopleāliفِرْعَوْنَ(of) Firaunfir'ʿawnaيَسُومُونَكُمْthey were afflicting youyasūmūnakumسُوٓءَ(with) evilsūaٱلْعَذَابِtormentl-ʿadhābiوَيُذَبِّحُونَand were slaughteringwayudhabbiḥūnaأَبْنَآءَكُمْyour sonsabnāakumوَيَسْتَحْيُونَand letting livewayastaḥyūnaنِسَآءَكُمْ ۚyour womennisāakumوَفِىAnd inwafīذَٰلِكُمthatdhālikumبَلَآءٌۭ(was) a trialbalāonمِّنfromminرَّبِّكُمْyour Lordrabbikumعَظِيمٌۭgreatʿaẓīmun٦
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to his people, "Remember the favor of Allāh upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
14:7
وَإِذْAnd whenwa-idhتَأَذَّنَproclaimedta-adhanaرَبُّكُمْyour LordrabbukumلَئِنIfla-inشَكَرْتُمْyou are thankfulshakartumلَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ۖsurely I will increase youla-azīdannakumوَلَئِنbut ifwala-inكَفَرْتُمْyou are ungratefulkafartumإِنَّindeedinnaعَذَابِىMy punishmentʿadhābīلَشَدِيدٌۭ(is) surely severelashadīdun٧
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"
14:8
وَقَالَAnd saidwaqālaمُوسَىٰٓMusamūsāإِنIfinتَكْفُرُوٓا۟you disbelievetakfurūأَنتُمْyouantumوَمَنand whoeverwamanفِى(is) infīٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiجَمِيعًۭاalljamīʿanفَإِنَّthen indeedfa-innaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaلَغَنِىٌّcertainly (is) Free of needlaghaniyyunحَمِيدٌPraiseworthyḥamīdun٨
And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
14:9
أَلَمْHas notalamيَأْتِكُمْcome to youyatikumنَبَؤُا۟(the) newsnaba-uٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīnaمِن(were) before youminقَبْلِكُمْ(were) before youqablikumقَوْمِthe peopleqawmiنُوحٍۢof Nuhnūḥinوَعَادٍۢand Aadwaʿādinوَثَمُودَ ۛand Thamudwathamūdaوَٱلَّذِينَand those whowa-alladhīnaمِنۢ(were) after themminبَعْدِهِمْ ۛ(were) after thembaʿdihimلَاNonelāيَعْلَمُهُمْknows themyaʿlamuhumإِلَّاexceptillāٱللَّهُ ۚAllahl-lahuجَآءَتْهُمْCame to themjāathumرُسُلُهُمtheir Messengersrusuluhumبِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِwith clear proofsbil-bayinātiفَرَدُّوٓا۟but they returnedfaraddūأَيْدِيَهُمْtheir handsaydiyahumفِىٓinfīأَفْوَٰهِهِمْtheir mouthsafwāhihimوَقَالُوٓا۟and they saidwaqālūإِنَّاIndeed weinnāكَفَرْنَا[we] disbelievekafarnāبِمَآin whatbimāأُرْسِلْتُمyou have been sentur'sil'tumبِهِۦwith [it]bihiوَإِنَّاand indeed, wewa-innāلَفِى(are) surely inlafīشَكٍّۢdoubtshakkinمِّمَّاabout whatmimmāتَدْعُونَنَآyou invite ustadʿūnanāإِلَيْهِto itilayhiمُرِيبٍۢsuspiciousmurībin٩
Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them? No one knows them [i.e., their number] but Allāh. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."
14:10
۞ قَالَتْSaidqālatرُسُلُهُمْtheir MessengersrusuluhumأَفِىCan (there) be aboutafīٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiشَكٌّۭany doubtshakkunفَاطِرِ(the) Creatorfāṭiriٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖand the earthwal-arḍiيَدْعُوكُمْHe invites youyadʿūkumلِيَغْفِرَso that He may forgiveliyaghfiraلَكُمfor youlakumمِّن[of]minذُنُوبِكُمْyour sinsdhunūbikumوَيُؤَخِّرَكُمْand give you respitewayu-akhirakumإِلَىٰٓforilāأَجَلٍۢa termajalinمُّسَمًّۭى ۚappointedmusammanقَالُوٓا۟They saidqālūإِنْNotinأَنتُمْyouantumإِلَّا(are) butillāبَشَرٌۭa humanbasharunمِّثْلُنَاlike usmith'lunāتُرِيدُونَyou wishturīdūnaأَنtoanتَصُدُّونَاhinder ustaṣuddūnāعَمَّاfrom whatʿammāكَانَused tokānaيَعْبُدُworshipyaʿbuduءَابَآؤُنَاour forefathersābāunāفَأْتُونَاSo bring usfatūnāبِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢan authoritybisul'ṭāninمُّبِينٍۢclearmubīnin١٠
Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allāh, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays you [i.e., your death] for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority [i.e., evidence]."
14:11
قَالَتْSaidqālatلَهُمْto themlahumرُسُلُهُمْtheir MessengersrusuluhumإِنNotinنَّحْنُwe (are)naḥnuإِلَّاbutillāبَشَرٌۭa humanbasharunمِّثْلُكُمْlike youmith'lukumوَلَـٰكِنَّbutwalākinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaيَمُنُّbestows His GraceyamunnuعَلَىٰonʿalāمَنwhommanيَشَآءُHe willsyashāuمِنْofminعِبَادِهِۦ ۖHis slavesʿibādihiوَمَاAnd notwamāكَانَiskānaلَنَآfor uslanāأَنthatanنَّأْتِيَكُمwe bring younatiyakumبِسُلْطَـٰنٍan authoritybisul'ṭāninإِلَّاexceptillāبِإِذْنِby the permission of Allahbi-idh'niٱللَّهِ ۚby the permission of Allahl-lahiوَعَلَىAnd uponwaʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiفَلْيَتَوَكَّلِso let put (their) trustfalyatawakkaliٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersl-mu'minūna١١
Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allāh confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allāh. And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
14:12
وَمَاAnd whatwamāلَنَآ(is) for uslanāأَلَّاthat notallāنَتَوَكَّلَwe put our trustnatawakkalaعَلَىuponʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiوَقَدْwhile certainlywaqadهَدَىٰنَاHe has guided ushadānāسُبُلَنَا ۚto our wayssubulanāوَلَنَصْبِرَنَّAnd surely we will bear with patiencewalanaṣbirannaعَلَىٰonʿalāمَآwhatmāءَاذَيْتُمُونَا ۚharm you may cause usādhaytumūnāوَعَلَىAnd uponwaʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiفَلْيَتَوَكَّلِso let put (their) trustfalyatawakkaliٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَthe ones who put (their) trustl-mutawakilūna١٢
And why should we not rely upon Allāh while He has guided us to our [good] ways. And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us. And upon Allāh let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
14:13
وَقَالَAnd saidwaqālaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievedkafarūلِرُسُلِهِمْto their MessengerslirusulihimلَنُخْرِجَنَّكُمSurely we will drive you outlanukh'rijannakumمِّنْofminأَرْضِنَآour landarḍināأَوْorawلَتَعُودُنَّsurely you should returnlataʿūdunnaفِىtofīمِلَّتِنَا ۖour religionmillatināفَأَوْحَىٰٓSo inspiredfa-awḥāإِلَيْهِمْto themilayhimرَبُّهُمْtheir LordrabbuhumلَنُهْلِكَنَّWe will surely destroylanuh'likannaٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna١٣
And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.
14:14
وَلَنُسْكِنَنَّكُمُAnd surely We will make you dwellwalanus'kinannakumuٱلْأَرْضَ(in) the landl-arḍaمِنۢafter themminبَعْدِهِمْ ۚafter thembaʿdihimذَٰلِكَThatdhālikaلِمَنْ(is) for whoeverlimanخَافَfearskhāfaمَقَامِىstanding before Memaqāmīوَخَافَand fearswakhāfaوَعِيدِMy Threatwaʿīdi١٤
And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."
14:15
وَٱسْتَفْتَحُوا۟And they sought victorywa-is'taftaḥūوَخَابَand disappointedwakhābaكُلُّeverykulluجَبَّارٍtyrantjabbārinعَنِيدٍۢobstinateʿanīdin١٥
And they requested decision [i.e., victory from Allāh], and disappointed, [therefore], was every obstinate tyrant.
14:16
مِّنof himminوَرَآئِهِۦAheadwarāihiجَهَنَّمُ(is) Helljahannamuوَيُسْقَىٰand he will be made to drinkwayus'qāمِنofminمَّآءٍۢwatermāinصَدِيدٍۢpurulentṣadīdin١٦
Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.
14:17
يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥHe will sip ityatajarraʿuhuوَلَاbut notwalāيَكَادُhe will be nearyakāduيُسِيغُهُۥ(to) swallowing ityusīghuhuوَيَأْتِيهِAnd will come to himwayatīhiٱلْمَوْتُthe deathl-mawtuمِنfromminكُلِّeverykulliمَكَانٍۢsidemakāninوَمَاbut notwamāهُوَhehuwaبِمَيِّتٍۢ ۖwill diebimayyitinوَمِنAnd ahead of himwaminوَرَآئِهِۦAnd ahead of himwarāihiعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentʿadhābunغَلِيظٌۭharshghalīẓun١٧
He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.
14:18
مَّثَلُ(The) examplemathaluٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīnaكَفَرُوا۟disbelievekafarūبِرَبِّهِمْ ۖin their Lordbirabbihimأَعْمَـٰلُهُمْtheir deedsaʿmāluhumكَرَمَادٍ(are) like asheskaramādinٱشْتَدَّتْblows furiouslyish'taddatبِهِon itbihiٱلرِّيحُthe windl-rīḥuفِىinfīيَوْمٍa dayyawminعَاصِفٍۢ ۖstormyʿāṣifinلَّاNolāيَقْدِرُونَcontrol (they have)yaqdirūnaمِمَّاof whatmimmāكَسَبُوا۟they have earnedkasabūعَلَىٰonʿalāشَىْءٍۢ ۚanythingshayinذَٰلِكَThatdhālikaهُوَ[it]huwaٱلضَّلَـٰلُ(is) the strayingl-ḍalāluٱلْبَعِيدُfarl-baʿīdu١٨
The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.
14:19
أَلَمْDo notalamتَرَyou seetaraأَنَّthatannaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaخَلَقَcreatedkhalaqaٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthwal-arḍaبِٱلْحَقِّ ۚin truthbil-ḥaqiإِنIfinيَشَأْHe willsyashaيُذْهِبْكُمْHe can remove youyudh'hib'kumوَيَأْتِand bringwayatiبِخَلْقٍۢa creationbikhalqinجَدِيدٍۢnewjadīdin١٩
Have you not seen [i.e., considered] that Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.
14:20
وَمَاAnd notwamāذَٰلِكَ(is) thatdhālikaعَلَىonʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiبِعَزِيزٍۢgreatbiʿazīzin٢٠
And that is not difficult for Allāh.
14:21
وَبَرَزُوا۟And they will come forthwabarazūلِلَّهِbefore Allahlillahiجَمِيعًۭاall togetherjamīʿanفَقَالَthen will sayfaqālaٱلضُّعَفَـٰٓؤُا۟the weakl-ḍuʿafāuلِلَّذِينَto those wholilladhīnaٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟were arrogantis'takbarūإِنَّاIndeed weinnāكُنَّاwe werekunnāلَكُمْyourlakumتَبَعًۭاfollowerstabaʿanفَهَلْso canfahalأَنتُمyou (be)antumمُّغْنُونَthe one who availsmugh'nūnaعَنَّاusʿannāمِنْfromminعَذَابِ(the) punishmentʿadhābiٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiمِنanythingminشَىْءٍۢ ۚanythingshayinقَالُوا۟They will sayqālūلَوْIflawهَدَىٰنَاAllah had guided ushadānāٱللَّهُAllah had guided usl-lahuلَهَدَيْنَـٰكُمْ ۖsurely we would have guided youlahadaynākumسَوَآءٌ(It is) samesawāonعَلَيْنَآfor usʿalaynāأَجَزِعْنَآwhether we show intoleranceajaziʿ'nāأَمْoramصَبَرْنَاwe are patientṣabarnāمَاnotmāلَنَا(is) for uslanāمِنanyminمَّحِيصٍۢplace of escapemaḥīṣin٢١
And they will come out [for judgement] before Allāh all together, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "Indeed, we were your followers, so can you avail us anything against the punishment of Allāh?" They will say, "If Allāh had guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us whether we show intolerance or are patient: there is for us no place of escape."
14:22
وَقَالَAnd will saywaqālaٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُthe Shaitaanl-shayṭānuلَمَّاwhenlammāقُضِىَhas been decidedquḍiyaٱلْأَمْرُthe matterl-amruإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaوَعَدَكُمْpromised youwaʿadakumوَعْدَa promisewaʿdaٱلْحَقِّ(of) truthl-ḥaqiوَوَعَدتُّكُمْAnd I promised youwawaʿadttukumفَأَخْلَفْتُكُمْ ۖbut I betrayed youfa-akhlaftukumوَمَاBut notwamāكَانَI hadkānaلِىَI hadliyaعَلَيْكُمover youʿalaykumمِّنanyminسُلْطَـٰنٍauthoritysul'ṭāninإِلَّآexceptillāأَنthatanدَعَوْتُكُمْI invited youdaʿawtukumفَٱسْتَجَبْتُمْand you respondedfa-is'tajabtumلِى ۖto melīفَلَاSo (do) notfalāتَلُومُونِىblame metalūmūnīوَلُومُوٓا۟but blamewalūmūأَنفُسَكُم ۖyourselvesanfusakumمَّآNotmāأَنَا۠(can) Ianāبِمُصْرِخِكُمْ(be) your helperbimuṣ'rikhikumوَمَآand notwamāأَنتُمyou (can)antumبِمُصْرِخِىَّ ۖ(be) my helperbimuṣ'rikhiyyaإِنِّىIndeed, Iinnīكَفَرْتُdenykafartuبِمَآ[of what]bimāأَشْرَكْتُمُونِyour association of me (with Allah)ashraktumūniمِنbeforeminقَبْلُ ۗbeforeqabluإِنَّIndeedinnaٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīnaلَهُمْfor themlahumعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentʿadhābunأَلِيمٌۭpainfulalīmun٢٢
And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allāh had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allāh] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."
14:23
وَأُدْخِلَAnd will be admittedwa-ud'khilaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believedāmanūوَعَمِلُوا۟and didwaʿamilūٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deedsl-ṣāliḥātiجَنَّـٰتٍۢ(to) Gardensjannātinتَجْرِىflowstajrīمِنfromminتَحْتِهَاunderneath ittaḥtihāٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُthe riversl-anhāruخَـٰلِدِينَ(will) abide foreverkhālidīnaفِيهَاin itfīhāبِإِذْنِby the permissionbi-idh'niرَبِّهِمْ ۖ(of) their Lordrabbihimتَحِيَّتُهُمْtheir greetingstaḥiyyatuhumفِيهَاthereinfīhāسَلَـٰمٌ(will be) peacesalāmun٢٣
And those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord; and their greeting therein will be, "Peace!"
14:24
أَلَمْDo notalamتَرَyou seetaraكَيْفَhowkayfaضَرَبَAllah sets forthḍarabaٱللَّهُAllah sets forthl-lahuمَثَلًۭاthe examplemathalanكَلِمَةًۭa wordkalimatanطَيِّبَةًۭgoodṭayyibatanكَشَجَرَةٍۢ(is) like a treekashajaratinطَيِّبَةٍgoodṭayyibatinأَصْلُهَاits rootaṣluhāثَابِتٌۭ(is) firmthābitunوَفَرْعُهَاand its brancheswafarʿuhāفِى(are) infīٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāi٢٤
Have you not considered how Allāh presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?
14:25
تُؤْتِىٓGivingtu'tīأُكُلَهَاits fruitukulahāكُلَّallkullaحِينٍۭtimeḥīninبِإِذْنِby the permissionbi-idh'niرَبِّهَا ۗof its LordrabbihāوَيَضْرِبُAnd Allah sets forthwayaḍribuٱللَّهُAnd Allah sets forthl-lahuٱلْأَمْثَالَthe examplesl-amthālaلِلنَّاسِfor mankindlilnnāsiلَعَلَّهُمْso that they maylaʿallahumيَتَذَكَّرُونَrememberyatadhakkarūna٢٥
It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allāh presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded.
14:26
وَمَثَلُAnd (the) examplewamathaluكَلِمَةٍ(of) a wordkalimatinخَبِيثَةٍۢevilkhabīthatinكَشَجَرَةٍ(is) like a treekashajaratinخَبِيثَةٍevilkhabīthatinٱجْتُثَّتْuprooteduj'tuthatمِنfromminفَوْقِthe surfacefawqiٱلْأَرْضِ(of) the earthl-arḍiمَاnotmāلَهَاfor itlahāمِن(is) anyminقَرَارٍۢstabilityqarārin٢٦
And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.
14:27
يُثَبِّتُAllah keeps firmyuthabbituٱللَّهُAllah keeps firml-lahuٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūبِٱلْقَوْلِwith the firm wordbil-qawliٱلثَّابِتِwith the firm wordl-thābitiفِىinfīٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifel-ḥayatiٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yāوَفِىand inwafīٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖthe Hereafterl-ākhiratiوَيُضِلُّAnd Allah lets go astraywayuḍilluٱللَّهُAnd Allah lets go astrayl-lahuٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ۚthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīnaوَيَفْعَلُAnd Allah doeswayafʿaluٱللَّهُAnd Allah doesl-lahuمَاwhatmāيَشَآءُHe willsyashāu٢٧
Allāh keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allāh sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allāh does what He wills.
14:28
۞ أَلَمْHave notalamتَرَyou seentaraإِلَى[to]ilāٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaبَدَّلُوا۟(have) changedbaddalūنِعْمَتَ(the) Favorniʿ'mataٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiكُفْرًۭا(for) disbeliefkuf'ranوَأَحَلُّوا۟and they ledwa-aḥallūقَوْمَهُمْtheir peopleqawmahumدَارَ(to the) housedāraٱلْبَوَارِ(of) destructionl-bawāri٢٨
Have you not considered those who exchanged the favor of Allāh for disbelief and settled their people [in] the home of ruin?
14:29
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannamaيَصْلَوْنَهَا ۖ(in) it they will burnyaṣlawnahāوَبِئْسَand a wretchedwabi'saٱلْقَرَارُplace to settlel-qarāru٢٩
[It is] Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the settlement.
14:30
وَجَعَلُوا۟And they set upwajaʿalūلِلَّهِto Allahlillahiأَندَادًۭاequalsandādanلِّيُضِلُّوا۟so that they misleadliyuḍillūعَنfromʿanسَبِيلِهِۦ ۗHis PathsabīlihiقُلْSayqulتَمَتَّعُوا۟Enjoytamattaʿūفَإِنَّbut indeedfa-innaمَصِيرَكُمْyour destinationmaṣīrakumإِلَى(is) toilāٱلنَّارِthe Firel-nāri٣٠
And they have attributed to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for indeed, your destination is the Fire."
14:31
قُلSayqulلِّعِبَادِىَto My slavesliʿibādiyaٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanūيُقِيمُوا۟(to) establishyuqīmūٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayersl-ṣalataوَيُنفِقُوا۟and (to) spendwayunfiqūمِمَّاfrom whatmimmāرَزَقْنَـٰهُمْWe have provided themrazaqnāhumسِرًّۭاsecretlysirranوَعَلَانِيَةًۭand publiclywaʿalāniyatanمِّنbeforeminقَبْلِbeforeqabliأَن[that]anيَأْتِىَcomesyatiyaيَوْمٌۭa Dayyawmunلَّاnotlāبَيْعٌۭany tradebayʿunفِيهِin itfīhiوَلَاand notwalāخِلَـٰلٌany friendshipkhilālun٣١
[O Muḥammad], tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange [i.e., ransom], nor any friendships.
14:32
ٱللَّهُAllahal-lahuٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhīخَلَقَcreatedkhalaqaٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthwal-arḍaوَأَنزَلَand sent downwa-anzalaمِنَfromminaٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāiمَآءًۭwatermāanفَأَخْرَجَthen brought forthfa-akhrajaبِهِۦfrom itbihiمِنَofminaٱلثَّمَرَٰتِthe fruitsl-thamarātiرِزْقًۭا(as) a provisionriz'qanلَّكُمْ ۖfor youlakumوَسَخَّرَand subjectedwasakharaلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْفُلْكَthe shipsl-ful'kaلِتَجْرِىَso that they may saillitajriyaفِىinfīٱلْبَحْرِthe seal-baḥriبِأَمْرِهِۦ ۖby His commandbi-amrihiوَسَخَّرَand subjectedwasakharaلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْأَنْهَـٰرَthe riversl-anhāra٣٢
It is Allāh who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.
14:33
وَسَخَّرَAnd He subjectedwasakharaلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلشَّمْسَthe sunl-shamsaوَٱلْقَمَرَand the moonwal-qamaraدَآئِبَيْنِ ۖboth constantly pursuing their coursesdāibayniوَسَخَّرَand subjectedwasakharaلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلَّيْلَthe nightal-laylaوَٱلنَّهَارَand the daywal-nahāra٣٣
And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.
14:34
وَءَاتَىٰكُمAnd He gave youwaātākumمِّنofminكُلِّallkulliمَاwhatmāسَأَلْتُمُوهُ ۚyou asked of Himsa-altumūhuوَإِنAnd ifwa-inتَعُدُّوا۟you counttaʿuddūنِعْمَتَ(the) Favor of Allahniʿ'mataٱللَّهِ(the) Favor of Allahl-lahiلَاnotlāتُحْصُوهَآ ۗyou will (be able to) count themtuḥ'ṣūhāإِنَّIndeedinnaٱلْإِنسَـٰنَthe mankindl-insānaلَظَلُومٌۭ(is) surely unjustlaẓalūmunكَفَّارٌۭ(and) ungratefulkaffārun٣٤
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor [i.e., blessings] of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.
14:35
وَإِذْAnd whenwa-idhقَالَsaidqālaإِبْرَٰهِيمُIbrahimib'rāhīmuرَبِّMy LordrabbiٱجْعَلْMakeij'ʿalهَـٰذَاthishādhāٱلْبَلَدَcityl-baladaءَامِنًۭاsafeāminanوَٱجْنُبْنِىand keep me awaywa-uj'nub'nīوَبَنِىَّand my sonswabaniyyaأَنthatanنَّعْبُدَwe worshipnaʿbudaٱلْأَصْنَامَthe idolsl-aṣnāma٣٥
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [i.e., Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
14:36
رَبِّMy LordrabbiإِنَّهُنَّIndeed, theyinnahunnaأَضْلَلْنَhave led astrayaḍlalnaكَثِيرًۭاmanykathīranمِّنَamongminaٱلنَّاسِ ۖthe mankindl-nāsiفَمَنSo whoeverfamanتَبِعَنِىfollows metabiʿanīفَإِنَّهُۥthen indeed, hefa-innahuمِنِّى ۖ(is) of meminnīوَمَنْand whoeverwamanعَصَانِىdisobeys meʿaṣānīفَإِنَّكَthen indeed, Youfa-innakaغَفُورٌۭ(are) Oft-ForgivingghafūrunرَّحِيمٌۭMost Mercifulraḥīmun٣٦
My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
14:37
رَّبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāإِنِّىٓIndeed, Iinnīأَسْكَنتُ[I] have settledaskantuمِن(some) ofminذُرِّيَّتِىmy offspringsdhurriyyatīبِوَادٍin a valleybiwādinغَيْرِnotghayriذِىwithdhīزَرْعٍcultivationzarʿinعِندَnearʿindaبَيْتِكَYour Sacred HousebaytikaٱلْمُحَرَّمِYour Sacred Housel-muḥaramiرَبَّنَاour Lordrabbanāلِيُقِيمُوا۟That they may establishliyuqīmūٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayersl-ṣalataفَٱجْعَلْSo makefa-ij'ʿalأَفْـِٔدَةًۭheartsafidatanمِّنَofminaٱلنَّاسِthe menl-nāsiتَهْوِىٓinclinetahwīإِلَيْهِمْtowards themilayhimوَٱرْزُقْهُمand provide themwa-ur'zuq'humمِّنَwithminaٱلثَّمَرَٰتِthe fruitsl-thamarātiلَعَلَّهُمْso that they maylaʿallahumيَشْكُرُونَbe gratefulyashkurūna٣٧
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.
14:38
رَبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāإِنَّكَIndeed, YouinnakaتَعْلَمُYou knowtaʿlamuمَاwhatmāنُخْفِىwe concealnukh'fīوَمَاand whatwamāنُعْلِنُ ۗwe proclaimnuʿ'linuوَمَاAnd notwamāيَخْفَىٰ(is) hiddenyakhfāعَلَىfromʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiمِنanyminشَىْءٍۢthingshayinفِىinfīٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiوَلَاand notwalāفِىinfīٱلسَّمَآءِthe heavenl-samāi٣٨
Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allāh on the earth or in the heaven.
14:39
ٱلْحَمْدُAll the Praiseal-ḥamduلِلَّهِ(is) for Allahlillahiٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhīوَهَبَhas grantedwahabaلِىmelīعَلَىinʿalāٱلْكِبَرِthe old agel-kibariإِسْمَـٰعِيلَIshmaelis'māʿīlaوَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚand Isaacwa-is'ḥāqaإِنَّIndeedinnaرَبِّىmy Lordrabbīلَسَمِيعُ(is) All-Hearerlasamīʿuٱلدُّعَآءِ(of) the prayerl-duʿāi٣٩
Praise to Allāh, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.
14:40
رَبِّMy LordrabbiٱجْعَلْنِىMake meij'ʿalnīمُقِيمَan establishermuqīmaٱلصَّلَوٰةِ(of) the prayerl-ṣalatiوَمِنand fromwaminذُرِّيَّتِى ۚmy offspringsdhurriyyatīرَبَّنَاOur Lordrabbanāوَتَقَبَّلْand acceptwataqabbalدُعَآءِmy prayerduʿāi٤٠
My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.
14:41
رَبَّنَاOur LordrabbanāٱغْفِرْForgiveigh'firلِىmelīوَلِوَٰلِدَىَّand my parentswaliwālidayyaوَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَand the believerswalil'mu'minīnaيَوْمَ(on) the Dayyawmaيَقُومُwill (be) establishedyaqūmuٱلْحِسَابُthe accountl-ḥisābu٤١
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
14:42
وَلَاAnd (do) notwalāتَحْسَبَنَّthinktaḥsabannaٱللَّهَ(that) Allahl-lahaغَـٰفِلًا(is) unawareghāfilanعَمَّاof whatʿammāيَعْمَلُdoyaʿmaluٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۚthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimūnaإِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāيُؤَخِّرُهُمْHe gives them respiteyu-akhiruhumلِيَوْمٍۢto a Dayliyawminتَشْخَصُwill staretashkhaṣuفِيهِin itfīhiٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُthe eyesl-abṣāru٤٢
And never think that Allāh is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them [i.e., their account] for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].
14:43
مُهْطِعِينَRacing aheadmuh'ṭiʿīnaمُقْنِعِىraised upmuq'niʿīرُءُوسِهِمْtheir headsruūsihimلَاnotlāيَرْتَدُّreturningyartadduإِلَيْهِمْtowards themilayhimطَرْفُهُمْ ۖtheir gazeṭarfuhumوَأَفْـِٔدَتُهُمْand their heartswa-afidatuhumهَوَآءٌۭ(are) emptyhawāon٤٣
Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void.
14:44
وَأَنذِرِAnd warnwa-andhiriٱلنَّاسَthe mankindl-nāsaيَوْمَ(of) a Dayyawmaيَأْتِيهِمُ(when) will come to themyatīhimuٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentl-ʿadhābuفَيَقُولُthen will sayfayaqūluٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīnaظَلَمُوا۟did wrongẓalamūرَبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāأَخِّرْنَآRespite usakhir'nāإِلَىٰٓforilāأَجَلٍۢa termajalinقَرِيبٍۢshortqarībinنُّجِبْwe will answernujibدَعْوَتَكَYour calldaʿwatakaوَنَتَّبِعِand we will followwanattabiʿiٱلرُّسُلَ ۗthe Messengersl-rusulaأَوَلَمْHad notawalamتَكُونُوٓا۟youtakūnūأَقْسَمْتُمswornaqsamtumمِّنbeforeminقَبْلُbeforeqabluمَاnotmāلَكُمfor youlakumمِّنanyminزَوَالٍۢendzawālin٤٤
And, [O Muḥammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers." [But it will be said], "Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?
14:45
وَسَكَنتُمْAnd you dweltwasakantumفِىinfīمَسَـٰكِنِthe dwellingsmasākiniٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīnaظَلَمُوٓا۟wrongedẓalamūأَنفُسَهُمْthemselvesanfusahumوَتَبَيَّنَand it had become clearwatabayyanaلَكُمْto youlakumكَيْفَhowkayfaفَعَلْنَاWe dealtfaʿalnāبِهِمْwith thembihimوَضَرَبْنَاand We put forthwaḍarabnāلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْأَمْثَالَthe examplesl-amthāla٤٥
And you lived among the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them. And We presented for you [many] examples."
14:46
وَقَدْAnd indeedwaqadمَكَرُوا۟they plannedmakarūمَكْرَهُمْtheir planmakrahumوَعِندَbut withwaʿindaٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiمَكْرُهُمْ(was) their planmakruhumوَإِنeven ifwa-inكَانَwaskānaمَكْرُهُمْtheir planmakruhumلِتَزُولَthat should be movedlitazūlaمِنْهُby itmin'huٱلْجِبَالُthe mountainsl-jibālu٤٦
And they had planned their plan, but with Allāh is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.
14:47
فَلَاSo (do) notfalāتَحْسَبَنَّthinktaḥsabannaٱللَّهَ(that) Allahl-lahaمُخْلِفَwill failmukh'lifaوَعْدِهِۦ(to) keep His Promisewaʿdihiرُسُلَهُۥٓ ۗ(to) His MessengersrusulahuإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaعَزِيزٌۭ(is) All-MightyʿazīzunذُوOwner (of) RetributiondhūٱنتِقَامٍۢOwner (of) Retributionintiqāmin٤٧
So never think that Allāh will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.
14:48
يَوْمَ(On the) Dayyawmaتُبَدَّلُwill be changedtubaddaluٱلْأَرْضُthe earthl-arḍuغَيْرَ(to) other (than)ghayraٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiوَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ ۖand the heavenswal-samāwātuوَبَرَزُوا۟and they will come forthwabarazūلِلَّهِbefore Allahlillahiٱلْوَٰحِدِthe Onel-wāḥidiٱلْقَهَّارِthe Irresistiblel-qahāri٤٨
[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and they [i.e., all creatures] will come out before Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,
14:49
وَتَرَىAnd you will seewatarāٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsl-muj'rimīnaيَوْمَئِذٍۢ(on) that Dayyawma-idhinمُّقَرَّنِينَbound togethermuqarranīnaفِىinfīٱلْأَصْفَادِthe chainsl-aṣfādi٤٩
And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in irons,
14:50
سَرَابِيلُهُمTheir garmentssarābīluhumمِّنofminقَطِرَانٍۢtarqaṭirāninوَتَغْشَىٰand will coverwataghshāوُجُوهَهُمُtheir faceswujūhahumuٱلنَّارُthe Firel-nāru٥٠
Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire
14:51
لِيَجْزِىَSo that Allah may recompenseliyajziyaٱللَّهُSo that Allah may recompensel-lahuكُلَّeachkullaنَفْسٍۢsoulnafsinمَّا(for) whatmāكَسَبَتْ ۚit earnedkasabatإِنَّIndeedinnaٱللَّهَAllahl-lahaسَرِيعُ(is) Swiftsarīʿuٱلْحِسَابِ(in) the reckoningl-ḥisābi٥١
So that Allāh will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
14:52
هَـٰذَاThishādhāبَلَـٰغٌۭ(is) a Messagebalāghunلِّلنَّاسِfor the mankindlilnnāsiوَلِيُنذَرُوا۟that they may be warnedwaliyundharūبِهِۦwith itbihiوَلِيَعْلَمُوٓا۟and that they may knowwaliyaʿlamūأَنَّمَاthat onlyannamāهُوَHehuwaإِلَـٰهٌۭ(is) One Godilāhunوَٰحِدٌۭ(is) One Godwāḥidunوَلِيَذَّكَّرَand that may take heedwaliyadhakkaraأُو۟لُوا۟menulūٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ(of) understandingl-albābi٥٢
This [Qur’ān] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
