بِسْمِ In (the) name bis'mi
In (the) name
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
the Most Merciful
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
20:1
طه Ta Ha tta-ha
Ta Ha
١ (1)
(1)
Ṭā, Hā.
20:2
مَآ Not
Not
أَنزَلْنَا We (have) sent down anzalnā
We (have) sent down
عَلَيْكَ to you ʿalayka
to you
ٱلْقُرْءَانَ the Quran l-qur'āna
the Quran
لِتَشْقَىٰٓ that you be distressed litashqā
that you be distressed
٢ (2)
(2)
We have not sent down to you the Qur’ān that you be distressed
20:3
إِلَّا (But) illā
(But)
تَذْكِرَةًۭ (as) a reminder tadhkiratan
(as) a reminder
لِّمَن for (those) who liman
for (those) who
يَخْشَىٰ fear yakhshā
fear
٣ (3)
(3)
But only as a reminder for those who fear [Allāh] -
20:4
تَنزِيلًۭا A revelation tanzīlan
A revelation
مِّمَّنْ from (He) Who mimman
from (He) Who
خَلَقَ created khalaqa
created
ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth l-arḍa
the earth
وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ and the heavens wal-samāwāti
and the heavens
ٱلْعُلَى [the] high l-ʿulā
[the] high
٤ (4)
(4)
A revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,
20:5
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ The Most Gracious al-raḥmānu
The Most Gracious
عَلَى over ʿalā
over
ٱلْعَرْشِ the Throne l-ʿarshi
the Throne
ٱسْتَوَىٰ is established is'tawā
is established
٥ (5)
(5)
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
20:6
لَهُۥ To Him (belongs) lahu
To Him (belongs)
مَا whatever
whatever
فِى (is) in
(is) in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens l-samāwāti
the heavens
وَمَا and whatever wamā
and whatever
فِى (is) in
(is) in
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth l-arḍi
the earth
وَمَا and whatever wamā
and whatever
بَيْنَهُمَا (is) between them baynahumā
(is) between them
وَمَا and whatever wamā
and whatever
تَحْتَ (is) under taḥta
(is) under
ٱلثَّرَىٰ the soil l-tharā
the soil
٦ (6)
(6)
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil.
20:7
وَإِن And if wa-in
And if
تَجْهَرْ you speak aloud tajhar
you speak aloud
بِٱلْقَوْلِ the word bil-qawli
the word
فَإِنَّهُۥ then indeed, He fa-innahu
then indeed, He
يَعْلَمُ knows yaʿlamu
knows
ٱلسِّرَّ the secret l-sira
the secret
وَأَخْفَى and the more hidden wa-akhfā
and the more hidden
٧ (7)
(7)
And if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.
20:8
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu
Allah
لَآ (there is) no
(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّا except illā
except
هُوَ ۖ Him huwa
Him
لَهُ To Him (belong) lahu
To Him (belong)
ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ the Names l-asmāu
the Names
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ the Most Beautiful l-ḥus'nā
the Most Beautiful
٨ (8)
(8)
Allāh - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.
20:9
وَهَلْ And has wahal
And has
أَتَىٰكَ come to you atāka
come to you
حَدِيثُ the narration ḥadīthu
the narration
مُوسَىٰٓ (of) Musa mūsā
(of) Musa
٩ (9)
(9)
And has the story of Moses reached you? -
20:10
إِذْ When idh
When
رَءَا he saw raā
he saw
نَارًۭا a fire nāran
a fire
فَقَالَ then he said faqāla
then he said
لِأَهْلِهِ to his family li-ahlihi
to his family
ٱمْكُثُوٓا۟ Stay here um'kuthū
Stay here
إِنِّىٓ indeed, I innī
indeed, I
ءَانَسْتُ [I] perceived ānastu
[I] perceived
نَارًۭا a fire nāran
a fire
لَّعَلِّىٓ perhaps I (can) laʿallī
perhaps I (can)
ءَاتِيكُم bring you ātīkum
bring you
مِّنْهَا therefrom min'hā
therefrom
بِقَبَسٍ a burning brand biqabasin
a burning brand
أَوْ or aw
or
أَجِدُ I find ajidu
I find
عَلَى at ʿalā
at
ٱلنَّارِ the fire l-nāri
the fire
هُدًۭى guidance hudan
guidance
١٠ (10)
(10)
When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."
20:11
فَلَمَّآ Then when falammā
Then when
أَتَىٰهَا he came to it atāhā
he came to it
نُودِىَ he was called nūdiya
he was called
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
١١ (11)
(11)
And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
20:12
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, [I] innī
Indeed, [I]
أَنَا۠ I Am anā
I Am
رَبُّكَ your Lord rabbuka
your Lord
فَٱخْلَعْ so remove fa-ikh'laʿ
so remove
نَعْلَيْكَ ۖ your shoes naʿlayka
your shoes
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka
Indeed, you
بِٱلْوَادِ (are) in the valley bil-wādi
(are) in the valley
ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ the sacred l-muqadasi
the sacred
طُوًۭى (of) Tuwa ṭuwan
(of) Tuwa
١٢ (12)
(12)
Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the blessed valley of Ṭuwā.
20:13
وَأَنَا And I wa-anā
And I
ٱخْتَرْتُكَ (have) chosen you ikh'tartuka
(have) chosen you
فَٱسْتَمِعْ so listen fa-is'tamiʿ
so listen
لِمَا to what limā
to what
يُوحَىٰٓ is revealed yūḥā
is revealed
١٣ (13)
(13)
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
20:14
إِنَّنِىٓ Indeed, [I] innanī
Indeed, [I]
أَنَا I Am anā
I Am
ٱللَّهُ Allah l-lahu
Allah
لَآ (There is) no
(There is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّآ but illā
but
أَنَا۠ I anā
I
فَٱعْبُدْنِى so worship Me fa-uʿ'bud'nī
so worship Me
وَأَقِمِ and establish wa-aqimi
and establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer l-ṣalata
the prayer
لِذِكْرِىٓ for My remembrance lidhik'rī
for My remembrance
١٤ (14)
(14)
Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
20:15
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
ٱلسَّاعَةَ the Hour l-sāʿata
the Hour
ءَاتِيَةٌ (will be) coming ātiyatun
(will be) coming
أَكَادُ I almost akādu
I almost
أُخْفِيهَا [I] hide it ukh'fīhā
[I] hide it
لِتُجْزَىٰ that may be recompensed lituj'zā
that may be recompensed
كُلُّ every kullu
every
نَفْسٍۭ soul nafsin
soul
بِمَا for what bimā
for what
تَسْعَىٰ it strives tasʿā
it strives
١٥ (15)
(15)
Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
20:16
فَلَا So (do) not falā
So (do) not
يَصُدَّنَّكَ (let) avert you yaṣuddannaka
(let) avert you
عَنْهَا from it ʿanhā
from it
مَن (one) who man
(one) who
لَّا (does) not
(does) not
يُؤْمِنُ believe yu'minu
believe
بِهَا in it bihā
in it
وَٱتَّبَعَ and follows wa-ittabaʿa
and follows
هَوَىٰهُ his desires hawāhu
his desires
فَتَرْدَىٰ lest you perish fatardā
lest you perish
١٦ (16)
(16)
So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
20:17
وَمَا And what wamā
And what
تِلْكَ (is) that til'ka
(is) that
بِيَمِينِكَ in your right hand biyamīnika
in your right hand
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
١٧ (17)
(17)
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
20:18
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
هِىَ It hiya
It
عَصَاىَ (is) my staff ʿaṣāya
(is) my staff
أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ I lean atawakka-u
I lean
عَلَيْهَا upon it ʿalayhā
upon it
وَأَهُشُّ and I bring down leaves wa-ahushu
and I bring down leaves
بِهَا with it bihā
with it
عَلَىٰ for ʿalā
for
غَنَمِى my sheep ghanamī
my sheep
وَلِىَ and for me waliya
and for me
فِيهَا in it fīhā
in it
مَـَٔارِبُ (are) uses maāribu
(are) uses
أُخْرَىٰ other ukh'rā
other
١٨ (18)
(18)
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
20:19
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
أَلْقِهَا Throw it down alqihā
Throw it down
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
١٩ (19)
(19)
[Allāh] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
20:20
فَأَلْقَىٰهَا So he threw it down fa-alqāhā
So he threw it down
فَإِذَا and behold fa-idhā
and behold
هِىَ It hiya
It
حَيَّةٌۭ (was) a snake ḥayyatun
(was) a snake
تَسْعَىٰ moving swiftly tasʿā
moving swiftly
٢٠ (20)
(20)
So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
20:21
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
خُذْهَا Seize it khudh'hā
Seize it
وَلَا and (do) not walā
and (do) not
تَخَفْ ۖ fear takhaf
fear
سَنُعِيدُهَا We will return it sanuʿīduhā
We will return it
سِيرَتَهَا (to) its state sīratahā
(to) its state
ٱلْأُولَىٰ the former l-ūlā
the former
٢١ (21)
(21)
[Allāh] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.
20:22
وَٱضْمُمْ And draw near wa-uḍ'mum
And draw near
يَدَكَ your hand yadaka
your hand
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
جَنَاحِكَ your side janāḥika
your side
تَخْرُجْ it will come out takhruj
it will come out
بَيْضَآءَ white bayḍāa
white
مِنْ without any min
without any
غَيْرِ without any ghayri
without any
سُوٓءٍ disease sūin
disease
ءَايَةً (as) a sign āyatan
(as) a sign
أُخْرَىٰ another ukh'rā
another
٢٢ (22)
(22)
And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
20:23
لِنُرِيَكَ That We may show you linuriyaka
That We may show you
مِنْ of min
of
ءَايَـٰتِنَا Our Signs āyātinā
Our Signs
ٱلْكُبْرَى the Greatest l-kub'rā
the Greatest
٢٣ (23)
(23)
That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.
20:24
ٱذْهَبْ Go idh'hab
Go
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
فِرْعَوْنَ Firaun fir'ʿawna
Firaun
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu
Indeed, he
طَغَىٰ (has) transgressed ṭaghā
(has) transgressed
٢٤ (24)
(24)
Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed [i.e., tyrannized]."
20:25
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
رَبِّ My Lord rabbi
My Lord
ٱشْرَحْ Expand ish'raḥ
Expand
لِى for me
for me
صَدْرِى my breast ṣadrī
my breast
٢٥ (25)
(25)
[Moses] said, "My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]
20:26
وَيَسِّرْ And ease wayassir
And ease
لِىٓ for me
for me
أَمْرِى my task amrī
my task
٢٦ (26)
(26)
And ease for me my task
20:27
وَٱحْلُلْ And untie wa-uḥ'lul
And untie
عُقْدَةًۭ (the) knot ʿuq'datan
(the) knot
مِّن from min
from
لِّسَانِى my tongue lisānī
my tongue
٢٧ (27)
(27)
And untie the knot from my tongue
20:28
يَفْقَهُوا۟ That they may understand yafqahū
That they may understand
قَوْلِى my speech qawlī
my speech
٢٨ (28)
(28)
That they may understand my speech.
20:29
وَٱجْعَل And appoint wa-ij'ʿal
And appoint
لِّى for me
for me
وَزِيرًۭا a minister wazīran
a minister
مِّنْ from min
from
أَهْلِى my family ahlī
my family
٢٩ (29)
(29)
And appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -
20:30
هَـٰرُونَ Harun hārūna
Harun
أَخِى my brother akhī
my brother
٣٠ (30)
(30)
Aaron, my brother.
20:31
ٱشْدُدْ Reinforce ush'dud
Reinforce
بِهِۦٓ through him bihi
through him
أَزْرِى my strength azrī
my strength
٣١ (31)
(31)
Increase through him my strength
20:32
وَأَشْرِكْهُ And make him share wa-ashrik'hu
And make him share
فِىٓ [in]
[in]
أَمْرِى my task amrī
my task
٣٢ (32)
(32)
And let him share my task
20:33
كَىْ That kay
That
نُسَبِّحَكَ we may glorify You nusabbiḥaka
we may glorify You
كَثِيرًۭا much kathīran
much
٣٣ (33)
(33)
That we may exalt You much
20:34
وَنَذْكُرَكَ And [we] remember You wanadhkuraka
And [we] remember You
كَثِيرًا much kathīran
much
٣٤ (34)
(34)
And remember You much.
20:35
إِنَّكَ Indeed, [You] innaka
Indeed, [You]
كُنتَ You are kunta
You are
بِنَا of us binā
of us
بَصِيرًۭا All-Seer baṣīran
All-Seer
٣٥ (35)
(35)
Indeed, You are of us ever Seeing."
20:36
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
قَدْ Verily qad
Verily
أُوتِيتَ you are granted ūtīta
you are granted
سُؤْلَكَ your request su'laka
your request
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
٣٦ (36)
(36)
[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
20:37
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad
And indeed
مَنَنَّا We conferred a favor manannā
We conferred a favor
عَلَيْكَ on you ʿalayka
on you
مَرَّةً another time marratan
another time
أُخْرَىٰٓ another time ukh'rā
another time
٣٧ (37)
(37)
And We had already conferred favor upon you another time,
20:38
إِذْ When idh
When
أَوْحَيْنَآ We inspired awḥaynā
We inspired
إِلَىٰٓ to ilā
to
أُمِّكَ your mother ummika
your mother
مَا what
what
يُوحَىٰٓ is inspired yūḥā
is inspired
٣٨ (38)
(38)
When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
20:39
أَنِ That ani
That
ٱقْذِفِيهِ cast him iq'dhifīhi
cast him
فِى in
in
ٱلتَّابُوتِ the chest l-tābūti
the chest
فَٱقْذِفِيهِ then cast it fa-iq'dhifīhi
then cast it
فِى in
in
ٱلْيَمِّ the river l-yami
the river
فَلْيُلْقِهِ then let cast it falyul'qihi
then let cast it
ٱلْيَمُّ the river l-yamu
the river
بِٱلسَّاحِلِ on the bank bil-sāḥili
on the bank
يَأْخُذْهُ will take him yakhudh'hu
will take him
عَدُوٌّۭ an enemy ʿaduwwun
an enemy
لِّى to Me
to Me
وَعَدُوٌّۭ and an enemy waʿaduwwun
and an enemy
لَّهُۥ ۚ to him lahu
to him
وَأَلْقَيْتُ And I cast wa-alqaytu
And I cast
عَلَيْكَ over you ʿalayka
over you
مَحَبَّةًۭ love maḥabbatan
love
مِّنِّى from Me minnī
from Me
وَلِتُصْنَعَ and that you may be brought up walituṣ'naʿa
and that you may be brought up
عَلَىٰ under ʿalā
under
عَيْنِىٓ My eye ʿaynī
My eye
٣٩ (39)
(39)
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
20:40
إِذْ When idh
When
تَمْشِىٓ was going tamshī
was going
أُخْتُكَ your sister ukh'tuka
your sister
فَتَقُولُ and she said fataqūlu
and she said
هَلْ Shall hal
Shall
أَدُلُّكُمْ I show you adullukum
I show you
عَلَىٰ [to] ʿalā
[to]
مَن (one) who man
(one) who
يَكْفُلُهُۥ ۖ will nurse and rear him yakfuluhu
will nurse and rear him
فَرَجَعْنَـٰكَ So We returned you farajaʿnāka
So We returned you
إِلَىٰٓ to ilā
to
أُمِّكَ your mother ummika
your mother
كَىْ that kay
that
تَقَرَّ may be cooled taqarra
may be cooled
عَيْنُهَا her eyes ʿaynuhā
her eyes
وَلَا and not walā
and not
تَحْزَنَ ۚ she grieves taḥzana
she grieves
وَقَتَلْتَ And you killed waqatalta
And you killed
نَفْسًۭا a man nafsan
a man
فَنَجَّيْنَـٰكَ but We saved you fanajjaynāka
but We saved you
مِنَ from mina
from
ٱلْغَمِّ the distress l-ghami
the distress
وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ and We tried you wafatannāka
and We tried you
فُتُونًۭا ۚ (with) a trial futūnan
(with) a trial
فَلَبِثْتَ Then you remained falabith'ta
Then you remained
سِنِينَ (some) years sinīna
(some) years
فِىٓ with
with
أَهْلِ (the) people ahli
(the) people
مَدْيَنَ (of) Madyan madyana
(of) Madyan
ثُمَّ Then thumma
Then
جِئْتَ you came ji'ta
you came
عَلَىٰ at ʿalā
at
قَدَرٍۢ the decreed (time) qadarin
the decreed (time)
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
٤٠ (40)
(40)
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
20:41
وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَ And I (have) chosen you wa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtuka
And I (have) chosen you
لِنَفْسِى for Myself linafsī
for Myself
٤١ (41)
(41)
And I produced you for Myself.
20:42
ٱذْهَبْ Go idh'hab
Go
أَنتَ you anta
you
وَأَخُوكَ and your brother wa-akhūka
and your brother
بِـَٔايَـٰتِى with My Signs biāyātī
with My Signs
وَلَا and (do) not walā
and (do) not
تَنِيَا slacken taniyā
slacken
فِى in
in
ذِكْرِى My remembrance dhik'rī
My remembrance
٤٢ (42)
(42)
Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
20:43
ٱذْهَبَآ Go, both of you idh'habā
Go, both of you
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
فِرْعَوْنَ Firaun fir'ʿawna
Firaun
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu
Indeed, he
طَغَىٰ (has) transgressed ṭaghā
(has) transgressed
٤٣ (43)
(43)
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
20:44
فَقُولَا And speak faqūlā
And speak
لَهُۥ to him lahu
to him
قَوْلًۭا a word qawlan
a word
لَّيِّنًۭا gentle layyinan
gentle
لَّعَلَّهُۥ perhaps he laʿallahu
perhaps he
يَتَذَكَّرُ may take heed yatadhakkaru
may take heed
أَوْ or aw
or
يَخْشَىٰ fear yakhshā
fear
٤٤ (44)
(44)
And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."
20:45
قَالَا They said qālā
They said
رَبَّنَآ Our Lord rabbanā
Our Lord
إِنَّنَا Indeed, we innanā
Indeed, we
نَخَافُ fear nakhāfu
fear
أَن that an
that
يَفْرُطَ he will hasten yafruṭa
he will hasten
عَلَيْنَآ against us ʿalaynā
against us
أَوْ or aw
or
أَن that an
that
يَطْغَىٰ he will transgress yaṭghā
he will transgress
٤٥ (45)
(45)
They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."
20:46
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
لَا (Do) not
(Do) not
تَخَافَآ ۖ fear takhāfā
fear
إِنَّنِى Indeed, I Am innanī
Indeed, I Am
مَعَكُمَآ with you both maʿakumā
with you both
أَسْمَعُ I hear asmaʿu
I hear
وَأَرَىٰ and I see wa-arā
and I see
٤٦ (46)
(46)
[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.
20:47
فَأْتِيَاهُ So go to him fatiyāhu
So go to him
فَقُولَآ and say faqūlā
and say
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
رَسُولَا both (are) Messengers rasūlā
both (are) Messengers
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
فَأَرْسِلْ so send fa-arsil
so send
مَعَنَا with us maʿanā
with us
بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel banī
(the) Children of Israel
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla
(the) Children of Israel
وَلَا and (do) not walā
and (do) not
تُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖ torment them tuʿadhib'hum
torment them
قَدْ Verily qad
Verily
جِئْنَـٰكَ we came to you ji'nāka
we came to you
بِـَٔايَةٍۢ with a Sign biāyatin
with a Sign
مِّن from min
from
رَّبِّكَ ۖ your Lord rabbika
your Lord
وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ And peace wal-salāmu
And peace
عَلَىٰ on ʿalā
on
مَنِ (one) who mani
(one) who
ٱتَّبَعَ follows ittabaʿa
follows
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ the Guidance l-hudā
the Guidance
٤٧ (47)
(47)
So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace will be upon he who follows the guidance.
20:48
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā
Indeed, we
قَدْ verily qad
verily
أُوحِىَ it has been revealed ūḥiya
it has been revealed
إِلَيْنَآ to us ilaynā
to us
أَنَّ that anna
that
ٱلْعَذَابَ the punishment l-ʿadhāba
the punishment
عَلَىٰ (will be) on ʿalā
(will be) on
مَن (one) who man
(one) who
كَذَّبَ denies kadhaba
denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰ and turns away watawallā
and turns away
٤٨ (48)
(48)
Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
20:49
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
فَمَن Then who faman
Then who
رَّبُّكُمَا (is) your Lord rabbukumā
(is) your Lord
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
٤٩ (49)
(49)
[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"
20:50
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
رَبُّنَا Our Lord rabbunā
Our Lord
ٱلَّذِىٓ (is) the One Who alladhī
(is) the One Who
أَعْطَىٰ gave aʿṭā
gave
كُلَّ (to) every kulla
(to) every
شَىْءٍ thing shayin
thing
خَلْقَهُۥ its form khalqahu
its form
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
هَدَىٰ He guided (it) hadā
He guided (it)
٥٠ (50)
(50)
He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
20:51
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
فَمَا Then what famā
Then what
بَالُ (is the) case bālu
(is the) case
ٱلْقُرُونِ (of) the generations l-qurūni
(of) the generations
ٱلْأُولَىٰ (of) the former l-ūlā
(of) the former
٥١ (51)
(51)
[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"
20:52
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
عِلْمُهَا Its knowledge ʿil'muhā
Its knowledge
عِندَ (is) with ʿinda
(is) with
رَبِّى my Lord rabbī
my Lord
فِى in
in
كِتَـٰبٍۢ ۖ a Record kitābin
a Record
لَّا Not
Not
يَضِلُّ errs yaḍillu
errs
رَبِّى my Lord rabbī
my Lord
وَلَا and not walā
and not
يَنسَى forgets yansā
forgets
٥٢ (52)
(52)
[Moses] said, "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
20:53
ٱلَّذِى The One Who alladhī
The One Who
جَعَلَ made jaʿala
made
لَكُمُ for you lakumu
for you
ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth l-arḍa
the earth
مَهْدًۭا (as) a bed mahdan
(as) a bed
وَسَلَكَ and inserted wasalaka
and inserted
لَكُمْ for you lakum
for you
فِيهَا therein fīhā
therein
سُبُلًۭا ways subulan
ways
وَأَنزَلَ and sent down wa-anzala
and sent down
مِنَ from mina
from
ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky l-samāi
the sky
مَآءًۭ water māan
water
فَأَخْرَجْنَا then We (have) brought forth fa-akhrajnā
then We (have) brought forth
بِهِۦٓ with it bihi
with it
أَزْوَٰجًۭا pairs azwājan
pairs
مِّن of min
of
نَّبَاتٍۢ plants nabātin
plants
شَتَّىٰ diverse shattā
diverse
٥٣ (53)
(53)
[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
20:54
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū
Eat
وَٱرْعَوْا۟ and pasture wa-ir'ʿaw
and pasture
أَنْعَـٰمَكُمْ ۗ your cattle anʿāmakum
your cattle
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
فِى in
in
ذَٰلِكَ that dhālika
that
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ surely (are) Signs laāyātin
surely (are) Signs
لِّأُو۟لِى for possessors li-ulī
for possessors
ٱلنُّهَىٰ (of) intelligence l-nuhā
(of) intelligence
٥٤ (54)
(54)
Eat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:55
۞ مِنْهَا From it min'hā
From it
خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ We created you khalaqnākum
We created you
وَفِيهَا and in it wafīhā
and in it
نُعِيدُكُمْ We will return you nuʿīdukum
We will return you
وَمِنْهَا and from it wamin'hā
and from it
نُخْرِجُكُمْ We will bring you out nukh'rijukum
We will bring you out
تَارَةً time tāratan
time
أُخْرَىٰ another ukh'rā
another
٥٥ (55)
(55)
From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
20:56
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
And verily
أَرَيْنَـٰهُ We showed him araynāhu
We showed him
ءَايَـٰتِنَا Our Signs āyātinā
Our Signs
كُلَّهَا all of them kullahā
all of them
فَكَذَّبَ but he denied fakadhaba
but he denied
وَأَبَىٰ and refused wa-abā
and refused
٥٦ (56)
(56)
And We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
20:57
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
أَجِئْتَنَا Have you come to us aji'tanā
Have you come to us
لِتُخْرِجَنَا to drive us out litukh'rijanā
to drive us out
مِنْ of min
of
أَرْضِنَا our land arḍinā
our land
بِسِحْرِكَ with your magic bisiḥ'rika
with your magic
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
٥٧ (57)
(57)
He said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
20:58
فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّكَ Then we will surely produce for you falanatiyannaka
Then we will surely produce for you
بِسِحْرٍۢ magic bisiḥ'rin
magic
مِّثْلِهِۦ like it mith'lihi
like it
فَٱجْعَلْ So make fa-ij'ʿal
So make
بَيْنَنَا between us baynanā
between us
وَبَيْنَكَ and between you wabaynaka
and between you
مَوْعِدًۭا an appointment mawʿidan
an appointment
لَّا not
not
نُخْلِفُهُۥ we will fail it nukh'lifuhu
we will fail it
نَحْنُ [we] naḥnu
[we]
وَلَآ and not walā
and not
أَنتَ you anta
you
مَكَانًۭا (in) a place makānan
(in) a place
سُوًۭى even suwan
even
٥٨ (58)
(58)
Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."1
20:59
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
مَوْعِدُكُمْ Your appointment mawʿidukum
Your appointment
يَوْمُ (is on the) day yawmu
(is on the) day
ٱلزِّينَةِ (of) the festival l-zīnati
(of) the festival
وَأَن and that wa-an
and that
يُحْشَرَ will be assembled yuḥ'shara
will be assembled
ٱلنَّاسُ the people l-nāsu
the people
ضُحًۭى (at) forenoon ḍuḥan
(at) forenoon
٥٩ (59)
(59)
[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."1
20:60
فَتَوَلَّىٰ Then went away fatawallā
Then went away
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
فَجَمَعَ and put together fajamaʿa
and put together
كَيْدَهُۥ his plan kaydahu
his plan
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
أَتَىٰ came atā
came
٦٠ (60)
(60)
So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].
20:61
قَالَ Said qāla
Said
لَهُم to them lahum
to them
مُّوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
Musa
وَيْلَكُمْ Woe to you waylakum
Woe to you
لَا (Do) not
(Do) not
تَفْتَرُوا۟ invent taftarū
invent
عَلَى against ʿalā
against
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
Allah
كَذِبًۭا a lie kadhiban
a lie
فَيُسْحِتَكُم lest He will destroy you fayus'ḥitakum
lest He will destroy you
بِعَذَابٍۢ ۖ with a punishment biʿadhābin
with a punishment
وَقَدْ And verily waqad
And verily
خَابَ he failed khāba
he failed
مَنِ who mani
who
ٱفْتَرَىٰ invented if'tarā
invented
٦١ (61)
(61)
Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."
20:62
فَتَنَـٰزَعُوٓا۟ Then they disputed fatanāzaʿū
Then they disputed
أَمْرَهُم (in) their affair amrahum
(in) their affair
بَيْنَهُمْ among them baynahum
among them
وَأَسَرُّوا۟ and they kept secret wa-asarrū
and they kept secret
ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ the private conversation l-najwā
the private conversation
٦٢ (62)
(62)
So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.
20:63
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū
They said
إِنْ Indeed in
Indeed
هَـٰذَٰنِ these two hādhāni
these two
لَسَـٰحِرَٰنِ [two] magicians lasāḥirāni
[two] magicians
يُرِيدَانِ they intend yurīdāni
they intend
أَن that an
that
يُخْرِجَاكُم they drive you out yukh'rijākum
they drive you out
مِّنْ of min
of
أَرْضِكُم your land arḍikum
your land
بِسِحْرِهِمَا with their magic bisiḥ'rihimā
with their magic
وَيَذْهَبَا and do away wayadhhabā
and do away
بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ with your way biṭarīqatikumu
with your way
ٱلْمُثْلَىٰ the exemplary l-muth'lā
the exemplary
٦٣ (63)
(63)
They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
20:64
فَأَجْمِعُوا۟ So put together fa-ajmiʿū
So put together
كَيْدَكُمْ your plan kaydakum
your plan
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
ٱئْتُوا۟ come i'tū
come
صَفًّۭا ۚ (in) a line ṣaffan
(in) a line
وَقَدْ And verily waqad
And verily
أَفْلَحَ (will be) successful aflaḥa
(will be) successful
ٱلْيَوْمَ today l-yawma
today
مَنِ who mani
who
ٱسْتَعْلَىٰ overcomes is'taʿlā
overcomes
٦٤ (64)
(64)
So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
20:65
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
إِمَّآ Either immā
Either
أَن [that] an
[that]
تُلْقِىَ you throw tul'qiya
you throw
وَإِمَّآ or wa-immā
or
أَن [that] an
[that]
نَّكُونَ we will be nakūna
we will be
أَوَّلَ the first awwala
the first
مَنْ who man
who
أَلْقَىٰ throws alqā
throws
٦٥ (65)
(65)
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
20:66
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
بَلْ Nay bal
Nay
أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ you throw alqū
you throw
فَإِذَا Then behold fa-idhā
Then behold
حِبَالُهُمْ Their ropes ḥibāluhum
Their ropes
وَعِصِيُّهُمْ and their staffs waʿiṣiyyuhum
and their staffs
يُخَيَّلُ seemed yukhayyalu
seemed
إِلَيْهِ to him ilayhi
to him
مِن by min
by
سِحْرِهِمْ their magic siḥ'rihim
their magic
أَنَّهَا that they annahā
that they
تَسْعَىٰ (were) moving tasʿā
(were) moving
٦٦ (66)
(66)
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
20:67
فَأَوْجَسَ So sensed fa-awjasa
So sensed
فِى in
in
نَفْسِهِۦ himself nafsihi
himself
خِيفَةًۭ a fear khīfatan
a fear
مُّوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
Musa
٦٧ (67)
(67)
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
20:68
قُلْنَا We said qul'nā
We said
لَا (Do) not
(Do) not
تَخَفْ fear takhaf
fear
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka
Indeed, you
أَنتَ you anta
you
ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ (will be) superior l-aʿlā
(will be) superior
٦٨ (68)
(68)
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
20:69
وَأَلْقِ And throw wa-alqi
And throw
مَا what
what
فِى (is) in
(is) in
يَمِينِكَ your right hand yamīnika
your right hand
تَلْقَفْ it will swallow up talqaf
it will swallow up
مَا what
what
صَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖ they have made ṣanaʿū
they have made
إِنَّمَا Only innamā
Only
صَنَعُوا۟ they (have) made ṣanaʿū
they (have) made
كَيْدُ a trick kaydu
a trick
سَـٰحِرٍۢ ۖ (of) a magician sāḥirin
(of) a magician
وَلَا and not walā
and not
يُفْلِحُ will be successful yuf'liḥu
will be successful
ٱلسَّاحِرُ the magician l-sāḥiru
the magician
حَيْثُ wherever ḥaythu
wherever
أَتَىٰ he comes atā
he comes
٦٩ (69)
(69)
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
20:70
فَأُلْقِىَ So were thrown down fa-ul'qiya
So were thrown down
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ the magicians l-saḥaratu
the magicians
سُجَّدًۭا prostrating sujjadan
prostrating
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū
They said
ءَامَنَّا We believe āmannā
We believe
بِرَبِّ in (the) Lord birabbi
in (the) Lord
هَـٰرُونَ (of) Harun hārūna
(of) Harun
وَمُوسَىٰ and Musa wamūsā
and Musa
٧٠ (70)
(70)
So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
20:71
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
ءَامَنتُمْ You believe āmantum
You believe
لَهُۥ [to] him lahu
[to] him
قَبْلَ before qabla
before
أَنْ [that] an
[that]
ءَاذَنَ I gave permission ādhana
I gave permission
لَكُمْ ۖ to you lakum
to you
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu
Indeed, he
لَكَبِيرُكُمُ (is) your chief lakabīrukumu
(is) your chief
ٱلَّذِى the one who alladhī
the one who
عَلَّمَكُمُ taught you ʿallamakumu
taught you
ٱلسِّحْرَ ۖ the magic l-siḥ'ra
the magic
فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ So surely I will cut off fala-uqaṭṭiʿanna
So surely I will cut off
أَيْدِيَكُمْ your hands aydiyakum
your hands
وَأَرْجُلَكُم and your feet wa-arjulakum
and your feet
مِّنْ of min
of
خِلَـٰفٍۢ opposite sides khilāfin
opposite sides
وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ and surely I will crucify you wala-uṣallibannakum
and surely I will crucify you
فِى on
on
جُذُوعِ (the) trunks judhūʿi
(the) trunks
ٱلنَّخْلِ (of) date-palms l-nakhli
(of) date-palms
وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ and surely you will know walataʿlamunna
and surely you will know
أَيُّنَآ which of us ayyunā
which of us
أَشَدُّ (is) more severe ashaddu
(is) more severe
عَذَابًۭا (in) punishment ʿadhāban
(in) punishment
وَأَبْقَىٰ and more lasting wa-abqā
and more lasting
٧١ (71)
(71)
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
20:72
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
لَن Never lan
Never
نُّؤْثِرَكَ we will prefer you nu'thiraka
we will prefer you
عَلَىٰ over ʿalā
over
مَا what
what
جَآءَنَا has come to us jāanā
has come to us
مِنَ of mina
of
ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ the clear proofs l-bayināti
the clear proofs
وَٱلَّذِى and the One Who wa-alladhī
and the One Who
فَطَرَنَا ۖ created us faṭaranā
created us
فَٱقْضِ So decree fa-iq'ḍi
So decree
مَآ whatever
whatever
أَنتَ you anta
you
قَاضٍ ۖ (are) decreeing qāḍin
(are) decreeing
إِنَّمَا Only innamā
Only
تَقْضِى you can decree taqḍī
you can decree
هَـٰذِهِ (for) this hādhihi
(for) this
ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ life l-ḥayata
life
ٱلدُّنْيَآ (of) the world l-dun'yā
(of) the world
٧٢ (72)
(72)
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us. So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
20:73
إِنَّآ Indeed, [we] innā
Indeed, [we]
ءَامَنَّا we believe āmannā
we believe
بِرَبِّنَا in our Lord birabbinā
in our Lord
لِيَغْفِرَ that He may forgive liyaghfira
that He may forgive
لَنَا for us lanā
for us
خَطَـٰيَـٰنَا our sins khaṭāyānā
our sins
وَمَآ and what wamā
and what
أَكْرَهْتَنَا you compelled us akrahtanā
you compelled us
عَلَيْهِ on it ʿalayhi
on it
مِنَ of mina
of
ٱلسِّحْرِ ۗ the magic l-siḥ'ri
the magic
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah wal-lahu
And Allah
خَيْرٌۭ (is) Best khayrun
(is) Best
وَأَبْقَىٰٓ and Ever Lasting wa-abqā
and Ever Lasting
٧٣ (73)
(73)
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."1
20:74
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu
Indeed, he
مَن who man
who
يَأْتِ comes yati
comes
رَبَّهُۥ (to) his Lord rabbahu
(to) his Lord
مُجْرِمًۭا (as) a criminal muj'riman
(as) a criminal
فَإِنَّ then indeed fa-inna
then indeed
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
جَهَنَّمَ (is) Hell jahannama
(is) Hell
لَا Not
Not
يَمُوتُ he will die yamūtu
he will die
فِيهَا in it fīhā
in it
وَلَا and not walā
and not
يَحْيَىٰ live yaḥyā
live
٧٤ (74)
(74)
Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
20:75
وَمَن But whoever waman
But whoever
يَأْتِهِۦ comes to Him yatihi
comes to Him
مُؤْمِنًۭا (as) a believer mu'minan
(as) a believer
قَدْ verily qad
verily
عَمِلَ he has done ʿamila
he has done
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ the righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti
the righteous deeds
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those fa-ulāika
then those
لَهُمُ for them lahumu
for them
ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ (will be) the ranks l-darajātu
(will be) the ranks
ٱلْعُلَىٰ [the] high l-ʿulā
[the] high
٧٥ (75)
(75)
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
20:76
جَنَّـٰتُ Gardens jannātu
Gardens
عَدْنٍۢ (of) Eden ʿadnin
(of) Eden
تَجْرِى flows tajrī
flows
مِن from min
from
تَحْتِهَا underneath them taḥtihā
underneath them
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ the rivers l-anhāru
the rivers
خَـٰلِدِينَ abiding forever khālidīna
abiding forever
فِيهَا ۚ in it fīhā
in it
وَذَٰلِكَ And that wadhālika
And that
جَزَآءُ (is) the reward jazāu
(is) the reward
مَن (for him) who man
(for him) who
تَزَكَّىٰ purifies himself tazakkā
purifies himself
٧٦ (76)
(76)
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.
20:77
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
And verily
أَوْحَيْنَآ We inspired awḥaynā
We inspired
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
مُوسَىٰٓ Musa mūsā
Musa
أَنْ that an
that
أَسْرِ Travel by night asri
Travel by night
بِعِبَادِى with My slaves biʿibādī
with My slaves
فَٱضْرِبْ and strike fa-iḍ'rib
and strike
لَهُمْ for them lahum
for them
طَرِيقًۭا a path ṭarīqan
a path
فِى in
in
ٱلْبَحْرِ the sea l-baḥri
the sea
يَبَسًۭا dry yabasan
dry
لَّا not
not
تَخَـٰفُ fearing takhāfu
fearing
دَرَكًۭا to be overtaken darakan
to be overtaken
وَلَا and not walā
and not
تَخْشَىٰ being afraid takhshā
being afraid
٧٧ (77)
(77)
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
20:78
فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ Then followed them fa-atbaʿahum
Then followed them
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
بِجُنُودِهِۦ with his forces bijunūdihi
with his forces
فَغَشِيَهُم but covered them faghashiyahum
but covered them
مِّنَ from mina
from
ٱلْيَمِّ the sea l-yami
the sea
مَا what
what
غَشِيَهُمْ covered them ghashiyahum
covered them
٧٨ (78)
(78)
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,
20:79
وَأَضَلَّ And led astray wa-aḍalla
And led astray
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
قَوْمَهُۥ his people qawmahu
his people
وَمَا and (did) not wamā
and (did) not
هَدَىٰ guide them hadā
guide them
٧٩ (79)
(79)
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
20:80
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children of Israel yābanī
O Children of Israel
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ O Children of Israel is'rāīla
O Children of Israel
قَدْ Verily qad
Verily
أَنجَيْنَـٰكُم We delivered you anjaynākum
We delivered you
مِّنْ from min
from
عَدُوِّكُمْ your enemy ʿaduwwikum
your enemy
وَوَٰعَدْنَـٰكُمْ and We made a covenant with you wawāʿadnākum
and We made a covenant with you
جَانِبَ on (the) side jāniba
on (the) side
ٱلطُّورِ (of) the Mount l-ṭūri
(of) the Mount
ٱلْأَيْمَنَ the right l-aymana
the right
وَنَزَّلْنَا and We sent down wanazzalnā
and We sent down
عَلَيْكُمُ to you ʿalaykumu
to you
ٱلْمَنَّ the Manna l-mana
the Manna
وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ and the quails wal-salwā
and the quails
٨٠ (80)
(80)
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
20:81
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū
Eat
مِن of min
of
طَيِّبَـٰتِ (the) good things ṭayyibāti
(the) good things
مَا which
which
رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ We have provided you razaqnākum
We have provided you
وَلَا and (do) not walā
and (do) not
تَطْغَوْا۟ transgress taṭghaw
transgress
فِيهِ therein fīhi
therein
فَيَحِلَّ lest should descend fayaḥilla
lest should descend
عَلَيْكُمْ upon you ʿalaykum
upon you
غَضَبِى ۖ My Anger ghaḍabī
My Anger
وَمَن And whoever waman
And whoever
يَحْلِلْ on whom descends yaḥlil

عَلَيْهِ on whom descends ʿalayhi
on whom descends
غَضَبِى My Anger ghaḍabī
My Anger
فَقَدْ indeed faqad
indeed
هَوَىٰ he (has) perished hawā
he (has) perished
٨١ (81)
(81)
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
20:82
وَإِنِّى But indeed, I Am wa-innī
But indeed, I Am
لَغَفَّارٌۭ the Perpetual Forgiver laghaffārun
the Perpetual Forgiver
لِّمَن of whoever liman
of whoever
تَابَ repents tāba
repents
وَءَامَنَ and believes waāmana
and believes
وَعَمِلَ and does waʿamila
and does
صَـٰلِحًۭا righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan
righteous (deeds)
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
ٱهْتَدَىٰ remains guided ih'tadā
remains guided
٨٢ (82)
(82)
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
20:83
۞ وَمَآ And what wamā
And what
أَعْجَلَكَ made you hasten aʿjalaka
made you hasten
عَن from ʿan
from
قَوْمِكَ your people qawmika
your people
يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa yāmūsā
O Musa
٨٣ (83)
(83)
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
20:84
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
هُمْ They hum
They
أُو۟لَآءِ (are) close ulāi
(are) close
عَلَىٰٓ upon ʿalā
upon
أَثَرِى my tracks atharī
my tracks
وَعَجِلْتُ and I hastened waʿajil'tu
and I hastened
إِلَيْكَ to you ilayka
to you
رَبِّ my Lord rabbi
my Lord
لِتَرْضَىٰ that You be pleased litarḍā
that You be pleased
٨٤ (84)
(84)
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
20:85
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
فَإِنَّا But indeed, We fa-innā
But indeed, We
قَدْ [verily] qad
[verily]
فَتَنَّا We (have) tried fatannā
We (have) tried
قَوْمَكَ your people qawmaka
your people
مِنۢ after you min
after you
بَعْدِكَ after you baʿdika
after you
وَأَضَلَّهُمُ and has led them astray wa-aḍallahumu
and has led them astray
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
the Samiri
٨٥ (85)
(85)
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray."
20:86
فَرَجَعَ Then Musa returned farajaʿa
Then Musa returned
مُوسَىٰٓ Then Musa returned mūsā
Then Musa returned
إِلَىٰ to ilā
to
قَوْمِهِۦ his people qawmihi
his people
غَضْبَـٰنَ angry ghaḍbāna
angry
أَسِفًۭا ۚ (and) sorrowful asifan
(and) sorrowful
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
أَلَمْ Did not alam
Did not
يَعِدْكُمْ promise you yaʿid'kum
promise you
رَبُّكُمْ your Lord rabbukum
your Lord
وَعْدًا a promise waʿdan
a promise
حَسَنًا ۚ good ḥasanan
good
أَفَطَالَ Then, did seem long afaṭāla
Then, did seem long
عَلَيْكُمُ to you ʿalaykumu
to you
ٱلْعَهْدُ the promise l-ʿahdu
the promise
أَمْ or am
or
أَرَدتُّمْ did you desire aradttum
did you desire
أَن that an
that
يَحِلَّ descend yaḥilla
descend
عَلَيْكُمْ upon you ʿalaykum
upon you
غَضَبٌۭ (the) Anger ghaḍabun
(the) Anger
مِّن of min
of
رَّبِّكُمْ your Lord rabbikum
your Lord
فَأَخْلَفْتُم so you broke fa-akhlaftum
so you broke
مَّوْعِدِى (the) promise to me mawʿidī
(the) promise to me
٨٦ (86)
(86)
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
20:87
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
مَآ Not
Not
أَخْلَفْنَا we broke akhlafnā
we broke
مَوْعِدَكَ promise to you mawʿidaka
promise to you
بِمَلْكِنَا by our will bimalkinā
by our will
وَلَـٰكِنَّا but we walākinnā
but we
حُمِّلْنَآ [we] were made to carry ḥummil'nā
[we] were made to carry
أَوْزَارًۭا burdens awzāran
burdens
مِّن from min
from
زِينَةِ ornaments zīnati
ornaments
ٱلْقَوْمِ (of) the people l-qawmi
(of) the people
فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَا so we threw them faqadhafnāhā
so we threw them
فَكَذَٰلِكَ and thus fakadhālika
and thus
أَلْقَى threw alqā
threw
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
the Samiri
٨٧ (87)
(87)
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
20:88
فَأَخْرَجَ Then he brought forth fa-akhraja
Then he brought forth
لَهُمْ for them lahum
for them
عِجْلًۭا a calf's ʿij'lan
a calf's
جَسَدًۭا body jasadan
body
لَّهُۥ it had lahu
it had
خُوَارٌۭ a lowing sound khuwārun
a lowing sound
فَقَالُوا۟ and they said faqālū
and they said
هَـٰذَآ This hādhā
This
إِلَـٰهُكُمْ (is) your god ilāhukum
(is) your god
وَإِلَـٰهُ and the god wa-ilāhu
and the god
مُوسَىٰ (of) Musa mūsā
(of) Musa
فَنَسِىَ but he forgot fanasiya
but he forgot
٨٨ (88)
(88)
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
20:89
أَفَلَا Then, did not afalā
Then, did not
يَرَوْنَ they see yarawna
they see
أَلَّا that not allā
that not
يَرْجِعُ it (could) return yarjiʿu
it (could) return
إِلَيْهِمْ to them ilayhim
to them
قَوْلًۭا a word qawlan
a word
وَلَا and not walā
and not
يَمْلِكُ possess yamliku
possess
لَهُمْ for them lahum
for them
ضَرًّۭا any harm ḍarran
any harm
وَلَا and not walā
and not
نَفْعًۭا any benefit nafʿan
any benefit
٨٩ (89)
(89)
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
20:90
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
And verily
قَالَ (had) said qāla
(had) said
لَهُمْ to them lahum
to them
هَـٰرُونُ Harun hārūnu
Harun
مِن before min
before
قَبْلُ before qablu
before
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi
O my people
إِنَّمَا Only innamā
Only
فُتِنتُم you are being tested futintum
you are being tested
بِهِۦ ۖ by it bihi
by it
وَإِنَّ and indeed wa-inna
and indeed
رَبَّكُمُ your Lord rabbakumu
your Lord
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ (is) the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu
(is) the Most Gracious
فَٱتَّبِعُونِى so follow me fa-ittabiʿūnī
so follow me
وَأَطِيعُوٓا۟ and obey wa-aṭīʿū
and obey
أَمْرِى my order amrī
my order
٩٠ (90)
(90)
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
20:91
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū
They said
لَن Never lan
Never
نَّبْرَحَ we will cease nabraḥa
we will cease
عَلَيْهِ being devoted to it ʿalayhi
being devoted to it
عَـٰكِفِينَ being devoted to it ʿākifīna
being devoted to it
حَتَّىٰ until ḥattā
until
يَرْجِعَ returns yarjiʿa
returns
إِلَيْنَا to us ilaynā
to us
مُوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
Musa
٩١ (91)
(91)
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
20:92
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
يَـٰهَـٰرُونُ O Harun yāhārūnu
O Harun
مَا What
What
مَنَعَكَ prevented you manaʿaka
prevented you
إِذْ when idh
when
رَأَيْتَهُمْ you saw them ra-aytahum
you saw them
ضَلُّوٓا۟ going astray ḍallū
going astray
٩٢ (92)
(92)
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
20:93
أَلَّا That not allā
That not
تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ you follow me tattabiʿani
you follow me
أَفَعَصَيْتَ Then, have you disobeyed afaʿaṣayta
Then, have you disobeyed
أَمْرِى my order amrī
my order
٩٣ (93)
(93)
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
20:94
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
يَبْنَؤُمَّ O son of my mother yabna-umma
O son of my mother
لَا (Do) not
(Do) not
تَأْخُذْ seize (me) takhudh
seize (me)
بِلِحْيَتِى by my beard biliḥ'yatī
by my beard
وَلَا and not walā
and not
بِرَأْسِىٓ ۖ by my head birasī
by my head
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī
Indeed, I
خَشِيتُ [I] feared khashītu
[I] feared
أَن that an
that
تَقُولَ you would say taqūla
you would say
فَرَّقْتَ You caused division farraqta
You caused division
بَيْنَ between bayna
between
بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel banī
(the) Children of Israel
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla
(the) Children of Israel
وَلَمْ and not walam
and not
تَرْقُبْ you respect tarqub
you respect
قَوْلِى my word qawlī
my word
٩٤ (94)
(94)
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
20:95
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
فَمَا Then what famā
Then what
خَطْبُكَ (is) your case khaṭbuka
(is) your case
يَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّ O Samiri yāsāmiriyyu
O Samiri
٩٥ (95)
(95)
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
20:96
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
بَصُرْتُ I perceived baṣur'tu
I perceived
بِمَا what bimā
what
لَمْ not lam
not
يَبْصُرُوا۟ they perceive yabṣurū
they perceive
بِهِۦ in it bihi
in it
فَقَبَضْتُ so I took faqabaḍtu
so I took
قَبْضَةًۭ a handful qabḍatan
a handful
مِّنْ from min
from
أَثَرِ (the) track athari
(the) track
ٱلرَّسُولِ (of) the Messenger l-rasūli
(of) the Messenger
فَنَبَذْتُهَا then threw it fanabadhtuhā
then threw it
وَكَذَٰلِكَ and thus wakadhālika
and thus
سَوَّلَتْ suggested sawwalat
suggested
لِى to me
to me
نَفْسِى my soul nafsī
my soul
٩٦ (96)
(96)
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger and threw it, and thus did my soul entice me."
20:97
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
فَٱذْهَبْ Then go fa-idh'hab
Then go
فَإِنَّ And indeed fa-inna
And indeed
لَكَ for you laka
for you
فِى in
in
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ the life l-ḥayati
the life
أَن that an
that
تَقُولَ you will say taqūla
you will say
لَا (Do) not
(Do) not
مِسَاسَ ۖ touch misāsa
touch
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna
And indeed
لَكَ for you laka
for you
مَوْعِدًۭا (is) an appointment mawʿidan
(is) an appointment
لَّن never lan
never
تُخْلَفَهُۥ ۖ you will fail to (keep) it tukh'lafahu
you will fail to (keep) it
وَٱنظُرْ And look wa-unẓur
And look
إِلَىٰٓ at ilā
at
إِلَـٰهِكَ your god ilāhika
your god
ٱلَّذِى that which alladhī
that which
ظَلْتَ you have remained ẓalta
you have remained
عَلَيْهِ to it ʿalayhi
to it
عَاكِفًۭا ۖ devoted ʿākifan
devoted
لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ Surely we will burn it lanuḥarriqannahu
Surely we will burn it
ثُمَّ then thumma
then
لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ certainly we will scatter it lanansifannahu
certainly we will scatter it
فِى in
in
ٱلْيَمِّ the sea l-yami
the sea
نَسْفًا (in) particles nasfan
(in) particles
٩٧ (97)
(97)
[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.
20:98
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā
Only
إِلَـٰهُكُمُ your God ilāhukumu
your God
ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah l-lahu
(is) Allah
ٱلَّذِى the One alladhī
the One
لَآ (there is) no
(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَ god ilāha
god
إِلَّا but illā
but
هُوَ ۚ He huwa
He
وَسِعَ He has encompassed wasiʿa
He has encompassed
كُلَّ all kulla
all
شَىْءٍ things shayin
things
عِلْمًۭا (in) knowledge ʿil'man
(in) knowledge
٩٨ (98)
(98)
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
20:99
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
نَقُصُّ We relate naquṣṣu
We relate
عَلَيْكَ to you ʿalayka
to you
مِنْ from min
from
أَنۢبَآءِ (the) news anbāi
(the) news
مَا (of) what
(of) what
قَدْ has preceded qad
has preceded
سَبَقَ ۚ has preceded sabaqa
has preceded
وَقَدْ And certainly waqad
And certainly
ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ We have given you ātaynāka
We have given you
مِن from min
from
لَّدُنَّا Us ladunnā
Us
ذِكْرًۭا a Reminder dhik'ran
a Reminder
٩٩ (99)
(99)
Thus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
20:100
مَّنْ Whoever man
Whoever
أَعْرَضَ turns away aʿraḍa
turns away
عَنْهُ from it ʿanhu
from it
فَإِنَّهُۥ then indeed, he fa-innahu
then indeed, he
يَحْمِلُ will bear yaḥmilu
will bear
يَوْمَ (on the) Day yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati
(of) Resurrection
وِزْرًا a burden wiz'ran
a burden
١٠٠ (100)
(100)
Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
20:101
خَـٰلِدِينَ Abiding forever khālidīna
Abiding forever
فِيهِ ۖ in it fīhi
in it
وَسَآءَ and evil wasāa
and evil
لَهُمْ for them lahum
for them
يَوْمَ (on the) Day yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
(of) the Resurrection
حِمْلًۭا (as) a load ḥim'lan
(as) a load
١٠١ (101)
(101)
[Abiding] eternally therein, and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -
20:102
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma
(The) Day
يُنفَخُ will be blown yunfakhu
will be blown
فِى in
in
ٱلصُّورِ ۚ the Trumpet l-ṣūri
the Trumpet
وَنَحْشُرُ and We will gather wanaḥshuru
and We will gather
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ the criminals l-muj'rimīna
the criminals
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ that Day yawma-idhin
that Day
زُرْقًۭا blue-eyed zur'qan
blue-eyed
١٠٢ (102)
(102)
The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.
20:103
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ They are murmuring yatakhāfatūna
They are murmuring
بَيْنَهُمْ among themselves baynahum
among themselves
إِن Not in
Not
لَّبِثْتُمْ you remained labith'tum
you remained
إِلَّا except (for) illā
except (for)
عَشْرًۭا ten ʿashran
ten
١٠٣ (103)
(103)
They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
20:104
نَّحْنُ We naḥnu
We
أَعْلَمُ know best aʿlamu
know best
بِمَا what bimā
what
يَقُولُونَ they will say yaqūlūna
they will say
إِذْ when idh
when
يَقُولُ will say yaqūlu
will say
أَمْثَلُهُمْ (the) best of them amthaluhum
(the) best of them
طَرِيقَةً (in) conduct ṭarīqatan
(in) conduct
إِن Not in
Not
لَّبِثْتُمْ you remained labith'tum
you remained
إِلَّا except (for) illā
except (for)
يَوْمًۭا a day yawman
a day
١٠٤ (104)
(104)
We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."
20:105
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ And they ask you wayasalūnaka
And they ask you
عَنِ about ʿani
about
ٱلْجِبَالِ the mountains l-jibāli
the mountains
فَقُلْ so say faqul
so say
يَنسِفُهَا Will blast them yansifuhā
Will blast them
رَبِّى my Lord rabbī
my Lord
نَسْفًۭا (into) particles nasfan
(into) particles
١٠٥ (105)
(105)
And they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast.
20:106
فَيَذَرُهَا Then He will leave it fayadharuhā
Then He will leave it
قَاعًۭا a level qāʿan
a level
صَفْصَفًۭا plain ṣafṣafan
plain
١٠٦ (106)
(106)
And He will leave it [i.e., the earth] a level plain;
20:107
لَّا Not
Not
تَرَىٰ you will see tarā
you will see
فِيهَا in it fīhā
in it
عِوَجًۭا any crookedness ʿiwajan
any crookedness
وَلَآ and not walā
and not
أَمْتًۭا any curve amtan
any curve
١٠٧ (107)
(107)
You will not see therein a depression or an elevation."
20:108
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ On that Day yawma-idhin
On that Day
يَتَّبِعُونَ they will follow yattabiʿūna
they will follow
ٱلدَّاعِىَ the caller l-dāʿiya
the caller
لَا no
no
عِوَجَ deviation ʿiwaja
deviation
لَهُۥ ۖ from it lahu
from it
وَخَشَعَتِ And (will be) humbled wakhashaʿati
And (will be) humbled
ٱلْأَصْوَاتُ the voices l-aṣwātu
the voices
لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ for the Most Gracious lilrraḥmāni
for the Most Gracious
فَلَا so not falā
so not
تَسْمَعُ you will hear tasmaʿu
you will hear
إِلَّا except illā
except
هَمْسًۭا a faint sound hamsan
a faint sound
١٠٨ (108)
(108)
That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
20:109
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ (On) that Day yawma-idhin
(On) that Day
لَّا not
not
تَنفَعُ will benefit tanfaʿu
will benefit
ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ the intercession l-shafāʿatu
the intercession
إِلَّا except illā
except
مَنْ (to) whom man
(to) whom
أَذِنَ has given permission adhina
has given permission
لَهُ [to him] lahu
[to him]
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu
the Most Gracious
وَرَضِىَ and He has accepted waraḍiya
and He has accepted
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
قَوْلًۭا a word qawlan
a word
١٠٩ (109)
(109)
That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
20:110
يَعْلَمُ He knows yaʿlamu
He knows
مَا what
what
بَيْنَ (is) before them bayna
(is) before them
أَيْدِيهِمْ (is) before them aydīhim
(is) before them
وَمَا and what wamā
and what
خَلْفَهُمْ (is) behind them khalfahum
(is) behind them
وَلَا while not walā
while not
يُحِيطُونَ they encompass yuḥīṭūna
they encompass
بِهِۦ it bihi
it
عِلْمًۭا (in) knowledge ʿil'man
(in) knowledge
١١٠ (110)
(110)
He [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
20:111
۞ وَعَنَتِ And (will be) humbled waʿanati
And (will be) humbled
ٱلْوُجُوهُ the faces l-wujūhu
the faces
لِلْحَىِّ before the Ever-Living lil'ḥayyi
before the Ever-Living
ٱلْقَيُّومِ ۖ the Self-Subsisting l-qayūmi
the Self-Subsisting
وَقَدْ And verily waqad
And verily
خَابَ will have failed khāba
will have failed
مَنْ (he) who man
(he) who
حَمَلَ carried ḥamala
carried
ظُلْمًۭا wrongdoing ẓul'man
wrongdoing
١١١ (111)
(111)
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. And he will have failed who carries injustice.
20:112
وَمَن But (he) who waman
But (he) who
يَعْمَلْ does yaʿmal
does
مِنَ of mina
of
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ the righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti
the righteous deeds
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
while he
مُؤْمِنٌۭ (is) a believer mu'minun
(is) a believer
فَلَا then not falā
then not
يَخَافُ he will fear yakhāfu
he will fear
ظُلْمًۭا injustice ẓul'man
injustice
وَلَا and not walā
and not
هَضْمًۭا deprivation haḍman
deprivation
١١٢ (112)
(112)
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
20:113
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika
And thus
أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ We have sent it down anzalnāhu
We have sent it down
قُرْءَانًا (the) Quran qur'ānan
(the) Quran
عَرَبِيًّۭا (in) Arabic ʿarabiyyan
(in) Arabic
وَصَرَّفْنَا and We have explained waṣarrafnā
and We have explained
فِيهِ in it fīhi
in it
مِنَ of mina
of
ٱلْوَعِيدِ the warnings l-waʿīdi
the warnings
لَعَلَّهُمْ that they may laʿallahum
that they may
يَتَّقُونَ fear yattaqūna
fear
أَوْ or aw
or
يُحْدِثُ it may cause yuḥ'dithu
it may cause
لَهُمْ [for] them lahum
[for] them
ذِكْرًۭا remembrance dhik'ran
remembrance
١١٣ (113)
(113)
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
20:114
فَتَعَـٰلَى So high (above all) fataʿālā
So high (above all)
ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah l-lahu
(is) Allah
ٱلْمَلِكُ the King l-maliku
the King
ٱلْحَقُّ ۗ the True l-ḥaqu
the True
وَلَا And (do) not walā
And (do) not
تَعْجَلْ hasten taʿjal
hasten
بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ with the Quran bil-qur'āni
with the Quran
مِن before min
before
قَبْلِ before qabli
before
أَن [that] an
[that]
يُقْضَىٰٓ is completed yuq'ḍā
is completed
إِلَيْكَ to you ilayka
to you
وَحْيُهُۥ ۖ its revelation waḥyuhu
its revelation
وَقُل and say waqul
and say
رَّبِّ My Lord rabbi
My Lord
زِدْنِى Increase me zid'nī
Increase me
عِلْمًۭا (in) knowledge ʿil'man
(in) knowledge
١١٤ (114)
(114)
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
20:115
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
And verily
عَهِدْنَآ We made a covenant ʿahid'nā
We made a covenant
إِلَىٰٓ with ilā
with
ءَادَمَ Adam ādama
Adam
مِن before min
before
قَبْلُ before qablu
before
فَنَسِىَ but he forgot fanasiya
but he forgot
وَلَمْ and not walam
and not
نَجِدْ We found najid
We found
لَهُۥ in him lahu
in him
عَزْمًۭا determination ʿazman
determination
١١٥ (115)
(115)
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.
20:116
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh
And when
قُلْنَا We said qul'nā
We said
لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ to the Angels lil'malāikati
to the Angels
ٱسْجُدُوا۟ Prostrate us'judū
Prostrate
لِـَٔادَمَ to Adam liādama
to Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ then they prostrated fasajadū
then they prostrated
إِلَّآ except illā
except
إِبْلِيسَ Iblis ib'līsa
Iblis
أَبَىٰ he refused abā
he refused
١١٦ (116)
(116)
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees; he refused.
20:117
فَقُلْنَا Then We said faqul'nā
Then We said
يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ O Adam yāādamu
O Adam
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
هَـٰذَا this hādhā
this
عَدُوٌّۭ (is) an enemy ʿaduwwun
(is) an enemy
لَّكَ to you laka
to you
وَلِزَوْجِكَ and to your wife walizawjika
and to your wife
فَلَا So not falā
So not
يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا (let) him drive you both yukh'rijannakumā
(let) him drive you both
مِنَ from mina
from
ٱلْجَنَّةِ Paradise l-janati
Paradise
فَتَشْقَىٰٓ so (that) you would suffer fatashqā
so (that) you would suffer
١١٧ (117)
(117)
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
20:118
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
لَكَ for you laka
for you
أَلَّا that not allā
that not
تَجُوعَ you will be hungry tajūʿa
you will be hungry
فِيهَا therein fīhā
therein
وَلَا and not walā
and not
تَعْرَىٰ you will be unclothed taʿrā
you will be unclothed
١١٨ (118)
(118)
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
20:119
وَأَنَّكَ And that you wa-annaka
And that you
لَا not
not
تَظْمَؤُا۟ will suffer from thirst taẓma-u
will suffer from thirst
فِيهَا therein fīhā
therein
وَلَا and not walā
and not
تَضْحَىٰ exposed to the sun's heat taḍḥā
exposed to the sun's heat
١١٩ (119)
(119)
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
20:120
فَوَسْوَسَ Then whispered fawaswasa
Then whispered
إِلَيْهِ to him ilayhi
to him
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ Shaitaan l-shayṭānu
Shaitaan
قَالَ he said qāla
he said
يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ O Adam yāādamu
O Adam
هَلْ Shall hal
Shall
أَدُلُّكَ I direct you adulluka
I direct you
عَلَىٰ to ʿalā
to
شَجَرَةِ (the) tree shajarati
(the) tree
ٱلْخُلْدِ (of) the Eternity l-khul'di
(of) the Eternity
وَمُلْكٍۢ and a kingdom wamul'kin
and a kingdom
لَّا not
not
يَبْلَىٰ (that will) deteriorate yablā
(that will) deteriorate
١٢٠ (120)
(120)
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
20:121
فَأَكَلَا Then they both ate fa-akalā
Then they both ate
مِنْهَا from it min'hā
from it
فَبَدَتْ so became apparent fabadat
so became apparent
لَهُمَا to them lahumā
to them
سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا their shame sawātuhumā
their shame
وَطَفِقَا and they began waṭafiqā
and they began
يَخْصِفَانِ (to) fasten yakhṣifāni
(to) fasten
عَلَيْهِمَا on themselves ʿalayhimā
on themselves
مِن from min
from
وَرَقِ (the) leaves waraqi
(the) leaves
ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ (of) Paradise l-janati
(of) Paradise
وَعَصَىٰٓ And Adam disobeyed waʿaṣā
And Adam disobeyed
ءَادَمُ And Adam disobeyed ādamu
And Adam disobeyed
رَبَّهُۥ his Lord rabbahu
his Lord
فَغَوَىٰ and erred faghawā
and erred
١٢١ (121)
(121)
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
20:122
ثُمَّ Then thumma
Then
ٱجْتَبَـٰهُ chose him ij'tabāhu
chose him
رَبُّهُۥ his Lord rabbuhu
his Lord
فَتَابَ and turned fatāba
and turned
عَلَيْهِ to him ʿalayhi
to him
وَهَدَىٰ and guided (him) wahadā
and guided (him)
١٢٢ (122)
(122)
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
20:123
قَالَ He said qāla
He said
ٱهْبِطَا Go down ih'biṭā
Go down
مِنْهَا from it min'hā
from it
جَمِيعًۢا ۖ all jamīʿan
all
بَعْضُكُمْ some of you baʿḍukum
some of you
لِبَعْضٍ to others libaʿḍin
to others
عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ (as) enemy ʿaduwwun
(as) enemy
فَإِمَّا Then if fa-immā
Then if
يَأْتِيَنَّكُم comes to you yatiyannakum
comes to you
مِّنِّى from Me minnī
from Me
هُدًۭى guidance hudan
guidance
فَمَنِ then whoever famani
then whoever
ٱتَّبَعَ follows ittabaʿa
follows
هُدَاىَ My guidance hudāya
My guidance
فَلَا then not falā
then not
يَضِلُّ he will go astray yaḍillu
he will go astray
وَلَا and not walā
and not
يَشْقَىٰ suffer yashqā
suffer
١٢٣ (123)
(123)
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
20:124
وَمَنْ And whoever waman
And whoever
أَعْرَضَ turns away aʿraḍa
turns away
عَن from ʿan
from
ذِكْرِى My remembrance dhik'rī
My remembrance
فَإِنَّ then indeed fa-inna
then indeed
لَهُۥ for him lahu
for him
مَعِيشَةًۭ (is) a life maʿīshatan
(is) a life
ضَنكًۭا straitened ḍankan
straitened
وَنَحْشُرُهُۥ and We will gather him wanaḥshuruhu
and We will gather him
يَوْمَ (on the) Day yawma
(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
(of) the Resurrection
أَعْمَىٰ blind aʿmā
blind
١٢٤ (124)
(124)
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
20:125
قَالَ He will say qāla
He will say
رَبِّ My Lord rabbi
My Lord
لِمَ Why lima
Why
حَشَرْتَنِىٓ You raised me ḥashartanī
You raised me
أَعْمَىٰ blind aʿmā
blind
وَقَدْ while [verily] waqad
while [verily]
كُنتُ I had kuntu
I had
بَصِيرًۭا sight baṣīran
sight
١٢٥ (125)
(125)
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
20:126
قَالَ He will say qāla
He will say
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
Thus
أَتَتْكَ came to you atatka
came to you
ءَايَـٰتُنَا Our Signs āyātunā
Our Signs
فَنَسِيتَهَا ۖ but you forgot them fanasītahā
but you forgot them
وَكَذَٰلِكَ and thus wakadhālika
and thus
ٱلْيَوْمَ today l-yawma
today
تُنسَىٰ you will be forgotten tunsā
you will be forgotten
١٢٦ (126)
(126)
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
20:127
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika
And thus
نَجْزِى We recompense najzī
We recompense
مَنْ (he) who man
(he) who
أَسْرَفَ transgresses asrafa
transgresses
وَلَمْ and not walam
and not
يُؤْمِنۢ believes yu'min
believes
بِـَٔايَـٰتِ in (the) Signs biāyāti
in (the) Signs
رَبِّهِۦ ۚ (of) his Lord rabbihi
(of) his Lord
وَلَعَذَابُ And surely (the) punishment walaʿadhābu
And surely (the) punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati
(of) the Hereafter
أَشَدُّ (is) more severe ashaddu
(is) more severe
وَأَبْقَىٰٓ and more lasting wa-abqā
and more lasting
١٢٧ (127)
(127)
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
20:128
أَفَلَمْ Then has not afalam
Then has not
يَهْدِ it guided yahdi
it guided
لَهُمْ [for] them lahum
[for] them
كَمْ how many kam
how many
أَهْلَكْنَا We (have) destroyed ahlaknā
We (have) destroyed
قَبْلَهُم before them qablahum
before them
مِّنَ of mina
of
ٱلْقُرُونِ the generations l-qurūni
the generations
يَمْشُونَ (as) they walk yamshūna
(as) they walk
فِى in
in
مَسَـٰكِنِهِمْ ۗ their dwellings masākinihim
their dwellings
إِنَّ Indeed inna
Indeed
فِى in
in
ذَٰلِكَ that dhālika
that
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ surely (are) Signs laāyātin
surely (are) Signs
لِّأُو۟لِى for possessors li-ulī
for possessors
ٱلنُّهَىٰ (of) intelligence l-nuhā
(of) intelligence
١٢٨ (128)
(128)
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:129
وَلَوْلَا And if not walawlā
And if not
كَلِمَةٌۭ (for) a Word kalimatun
(for) a Word
سَبَقَتْ (that) preceded sabaqat
(that) preceded
مِن from min
from
رَّبِّكَ your Lord rabbika
your Lord
لَكَانَ surely (would) have been lakāna
surely (would) have been
لِزَامًۭا an obligation lizāman
an obligation
وَأَجَلٌۭ and a term wa-ajalun
and a term
مُّسَمًّۭى determined musamman
determined
١٢٩ (129)
(129)
And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately], and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
20:130
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir
So be patient
عَلَىٰ over ʿalā
over
مَا what
what
يَقُولُونَ they say yaqūlūna
they say
وَسَبِّحْ and glorify wasabbiḥ
and glorify
بِحَمْدِ with praise biḥamdi
with praise
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
قَبْلَ before qabla
before
طُلُوعِ (the) rising ṭulūʿi
(the) rising
ٱلشَّمْسِ (of) the sun l-shamsi
(of) the sun
وَقَبْلَ and before waqabla
and before
غُرُوبِهَا ۖ its setting ghurūbihā
its setting
وَمِنْ and from wamin
and from
ءَانَآئِ (the) hours ānāi
(the) hours
ٱلَّيْلِ (of) the night al-layli
(of) the night
فَسَبِّحْ and glorify fasabbiḥ
and glorify
وَأَطْرَافَ (at the) ends wa-aṭrāfa
(at the) ends
ٱلنَّهَارِ (of) the day l-nahāri
(of) the day
لَعَلَّكَ so that you may laʿallaka
so that you may
تَرْضَىٰ be satisfied tarḍā
be satisfied
١٣٠ (130)
(130)
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
20:131
وَلَا And (do) not walā
And (do) not
تَمُدَّنَّ extend tamuddanna
extend
عَيْنَيْكَ your eyes ʿaynayka
your eyes
إِلَىٰ towards ilā
towards
مَا what
what
مَتَّعْنَا We have given for enjoyment mattaʿnā
We have given for enjoyment
بِهِۦٓ [with it] bihi
[with it]
أَزْوَٰجًۭا pairs azwājan
pairs
مِّنْهُمْ of them min'hum
of them
زَهْرَةَ (the) splendor zahrata
(the) splendor
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ (of) the life l-ḥayati
(of) the life
ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world l-dun'yā
(of) the world
لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ that We may test them linaftinahum
that We may test them
فِيهِ ۚ in it fīhi
in it
وَرِزْقُ And (the) provision wariz'qu
And (the) provision
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord rabbika
(of) your Lord
خَيْرٌۭ (is) better khayrun
(is) better
وَأَبْقَىٰ and more lasting wa-abqā
and more lasting
١٣١ (131)
(131)
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
وَأْمُرْ And enjoin wamur
And enjoin
أَهْلَكَ (on) your family ahlaka
(on) your family
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ the prayer bil-ṣalati
the prayer
وَٱصْطَبِرْ and be steadfast wa-iṣ'ṭabir
and be steadfast
عَلَيْهَا ۖ therein ʿalayhā
therein
لَا Not
Not
نَسْـَٔلُكَ We ask you nasaluka
We ask you
رِزْقًۭا ۖ (for) provision riz'qan
(for) provision
نَّحْنُ We naḥnu
We
نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ provide (for) you narzuquka
provide (for) you
وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ and the outcome wal-ʿāqibatu
and the outcome
لِلتَّقْوَىٰ (is) for the righteous[ness] lilttaqwā
(is) for the righteous[ness]
١٣٢ (132)
(132)
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
20:133
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū
And they say
لَوْلَا Why not lawlā
Why not
يَأْتِينَا he brings us yatīnā
he brings us
بِـَٔايَةٍۢ a sign biāyatin
a sign
مِّن from min
from
رَّبِّهِۦٓ ۚ his Lord rabbihi
his Lord
أَوَلَمْ Has not awalam
Has not
تَأْتِهِم come to them tatihim
come to them
بَيِّنَةُ evidence bayyinatu
evidence
مَا (of) what
(of) what
فِى (was) in
(was) in
ٱلصُّحُفِ the Scriptures l-ṣuḥufi
the Scriptures
ٱلْأُولَىٰ the former l-ūlā
the former
١٣٣ (133)
(133)
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?
20:134
وَلَوْ And if walaw
And if
أَنَّآ We annā
We
أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُم (had) destroyed them ahlaknāhum
(had) destroyed them
بِعَذَابٍۢ with a punishment biʿadhābin
with a punishment
مِّن before him min
before him
قَبْلِهِۦ before him qablihi
before him
لَقَالُوا۟ surely they (would) have said laqālū
surely they (would) have said
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā
Our Lord
لَوْلَآ why not lawlā
why not
أَرْسَلْتَ You sent arsalta
You sent
إِلَيْنَا to us ilaynā
to us
رَسُولًۭا a Messenger rasūlan
a Messenger
فَنَتَّبِعَ so we (could) have followed fanattabiʿa
so we (could) have followed
ءَايَـٰتِكَ Your signs āyātika
Your signs
مِن before min
before
قَبْلِ before qabli
before
أَن [that] an
[that]
نَّذِلَّ we were humiliated nadhilla
we were humiliated
وَنَخْزَىٰ and disgraced wanakhzā
and disgraced
١٣٤ (134)
(134)
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
20:135
قُلْ Say qul
Say
كُلٌّۭ Each kullun
Each
مُّتَرَبِّصٌۭ (is) waiting mutarabbiṣun
(is) waiting
فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ ۖ so await fatarabbaṣū
so await
فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ Then you will know fasataʿlamūna
Then you will know
مَنْ who man
who
أَصْحَـٰبُ (are the) companions aṣḥābu
(are the) companions
ٱلصِّرَٰطِ (of) the way l-ṣirāṭi
(of) the way
ٱلسَّوِىِّ [the] even l-sawiyi
[the] even
وَمَنِ and who wamani
and who
ٱهْتَدَىٰ is guided ih'tadā
is guided
١٣٥ (135)
(135)
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting; so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
