Surah Taha (طه) is chapter 20 of the Holy Quran — a Meccan surah of 135 verses (ayahs). Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina and most often emphasise faith, the oneness of God and the hereafter.

Bismillah
بِسْمِIn (the) namebis'miٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahiٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāniٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
20:1
طهTa Hatta-ha١
Ṭā, Hā.
20:2
مَآNotmāأَنزَلْنَاWe (have) sent downanzalnāعَلَيْكَto youʿalaykaٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranl-qur'ānaلِتَشْقَىٰٓthat you be distressedlitashqā٢
We have not sent down to you the Qur’ān that you be distressed
20:3
إِلَّا(But)illāتَذْكِرَةًۭ(as) a remindertadhkiratanلِّمَنfor (those) wholimanيَخْشَىٰfearyakhshā٣
But only as a reminder for those who fear [Allāh] -
20:4
تَنزِيلًۭاA revelationtanzīlanمِّمَّنْfrom (He) Whomimmanخَلَقَcreatedkhalaqaٱلْأَرْضَthe earthl-arḍaوَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِand the heavenswal-samāwātiٱلْعُلَى[the] highl-ʿulā٤
A revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,
20:5
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُThe Most Graciousal-raḥmānuعَلَىoverʿalāٱلْعَرْشِthe Thronel-ʿarshiٱسْتَوَىٰis establishedis'tawā٥
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
20:6
لَهُۥTo Him (belongs)lahuمَاwhatevermāفِى(is) infīٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwātiوَمَاand whateverwamāفِى(is) infīٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍiوَمَاand whateverwamāبَيْنَهُمَا(is) between thembaynahumāوَمَاand whateverwamāتَحْتَ(is) undertaḥtaٱلثَّرَىٰthe soill-tharā٦
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil.
20:7
وَإِنAnd ifwa-inتَجْهَرْyou speak aloudtajharبِٱلْقَوْلِthe wordbil-qawliفَإِنَّهُۥthen indeed, Hefa-innahuيَعْلَمُknowsyaʿlamuٱلسِّرَّthe secretl-siraوَأَخْفَىand the more hiddenwa-akhfā٧
And if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.
20:8
ٱللَّهُAllah al-lahuلَآ(there is) nolāإِلَـٰهَgodilāhaإِلَّاexceptillāهُوَ ۖHimhuwaلَهُTo Him (belong)lahuٱلْأَسْمَآءُthe Namesl-asmāuٱلْحُسْنَىٰthe Most Beautifull-ḥus'nā٨
Allāh - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.
20:9
وَهَلْAnd haswahalأَتَىٰكَcome to youatākaحَدِيثُthe narrationḥadīthuمُوسَىٰٓ(of) Musamūsā٩
And has the story of Moses reached you? -
20:10
إِذْWhenidhرَءَاhe sawraāنَارًۭاa firenāranفَقَالَthen he saidfaqālaلِأَهْلِهِto his familyli-ahlihiٱمْكُثُوٓا۟Stay hereum'kuthūإِنِّىٓindeed, Iinnīءَانَسْتُ[I] perceivedānastuنَارًۭاa firenāranلَّعَلِّىٓperhaps I (can)laʿallīءَاتِيكُمbring youātīkumمِّنْهَاtherefrommin'hāبِقَبَسٍa burning brandbiqabasinأَوْorawأَجِدُI findajiduعَلَىatʿalāٱلنَّارِthe firel-nāriهُدًۭىguidancehudan١٠
When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."
20:11
فَلَمَّآThen whenfalammāأَتَىٰهَاhe came to itatāhāنُودِىَhe was callednūdiyaيَـٰمُوسَىٰٓO Musayāmūsā١١
And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
20:12
إِنِّىٓIndeed, [I]innīأَنَا۠I Amanāرَبُّكَyour Lordrabbukaفَٱخْلَعْso removefa-ikh'laʿنَعْلَيْكَ ۖyour shoesnaʿlaykaإِنَّكَIndeed, youinnakaبِٱلْوَادِ(are) in the valleybil-wādiٱلْمُقَدَّسِthe sacredl-muqadasiطُوًۭى(of) Tuwaṭuwan١٢
Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the blessed valley of Ṭuwā.
20:13
وَأَنَاAnd Iwa-anāٱخْتَرْتُكَ(have) chosen youikh'tartukaفَٱسْتَمِعْso listenfa-is'tamiʿلِمَاto whatlimāيُوحَىٰٓis revealedyūḥā١٣
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
20:14
إِنَّنِىٓIndeed, [I]innanīأَنَاI AmanāٱللَّهُAllahl-lahuلَآ(There is) nolāإِلَـٰهَgodilāhaإِلَّآbutillāأَنَا۠Ianāفَٱعْبُدْنِىso worship Mefa-uʿ'bud'nīوَأَقِمِand establishwa-aqimiٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayerl-ṣalataلِذِكْرِىٓfor My remembrancelidhik'rī١٤
Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
20:15
إِنَّIndeedinnaٱلسَّاعَةَthe Hourl-sāʿataءَاتِيَةٌ(will be) comingātiyatunأَكَادُI almostakāduأُخْفِيهَا[I] hide itukh'fīhāلِتُجْزَىٰthat may be recompensedlituj'zāكُلُّeverykulluنَفْسٍۭsoulnafsinبِمَاfor whatbimāتَسْعَىٰit strivestasʿā١٥
Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
20:16
فَلَاSo (do) notfalāيَصُدَّنَّكَ(let) avert youyaṣuddannakaعَنْهَاfrom itʿanhāمَن(one) whomanلَّا(does) notlāيُؤْمِنُbelieveyu'minuبِهَاin itbihāوَٱتَّبَعَand followswa-ittabaʿaهَوَىٰهُhis desireshawāhuفَتَرْدَىٰlest you perishfatardā١٦
So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
20:17
وَمَاAnd whatwamāتِلْكَ(is) thattil'kaبِيَمِينِكَin your right handbiyamīnikaيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā١٧
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
20:18
قَالَHe saidqālaهِىَIthiyaعَصَاىَ(is) my staffʿaṣāyaأَتَوَكَّؤُا۟I leanatawakka-uعَلَيْهَاupon itʿalayhāوَأَهُشُّand I bring down leaveswa-ahushuبِهَاwith itbihāعَلَىٰforʿalāغَنَمِىmy sheepghanamīوَلِىَand for mewaliyaفِيهَاin itfīhāمَـَٔارِبُ(are) usesmaāribuأُخْرَىٰotherukh'rā١٨
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
20:19
قَالَHe saidqālaأَلْقِهَاThrow it downalqihāيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā١٩
[Allāh] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
20:20
فَأَلْقَىٰهَاSo he threw it downfa-alqāhāفَإِذَاand beholdfa-idhāهِىَIthiyaحَيَّةٌۭ(was) a snakeḥayyatunتَسْعَىٰmoving swiftlytasʿā٢٠
So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
20:21
قَالَHe saidqālaخُذْهَاSeize itkhudh'hāوَلَاand (do) notwalāتَخَفْ ۖfeartakhafسَنُعِيدُهَاWe will return itsanuʿīduhāسِيرَتَهَا(to) its statesīratahāٱلْأُولَىٰthe formerl-ūlā٢١
[Allāh] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.
20:22
وَٱضْمُمْAnd draw nearwa-uḍ'mumيَدَكَyour handyadakaإِلَىٰtoilāجَنَاحِكَyour sidejanāḥikaتَخْرُجْit will come outtakhrujبَيْضَآءَwhitebayḍāaمِنْwithout anyminغَيْرِwithout anyghayriسُوٓءٍdiseasesūinءَايَةً(as) a signāyatanأُخْرَىٰanotherukh'rā٢٢
And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign,
20:23
لِنُرِيَكَThat We may show youlinuriyakaمِنْofminءَايَـٰتِنَاOur Signsāyātināٱلْكُبْرَىthe Greatestl-kub'rā٢٣
That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.
20:24
ٱذْهَبْGoidh'habإِلَىٰtoilāفِرْعَوْنَFiraunfir'ʿawnaإِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahuطَغَىٰ(has) transgressedṭaghā٢٤
Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed [i.e., tyrannized]."
20:25
قَالَHe saidqālaرَبِّMy LordrabbiٱشْرَحْExpandish'raḥلِىfor melīصَدْرِىmy breastṣadrī٢٥
[Moses] said, "My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]
20:26
وَيَسِّرْAnd easewayassirلِىٓfor melīأَمْرِىmy taskamrī٢٦
And ease for me my task
20:27
وَٱحْلُلْAnd untiewa-uḥ'lulعُقْدَةًۭ(the) knotʿuq'datanمِّنfromminلِّسَانِىmy tonguelisānī٢٧
And untie the knot from my tongue
20:28
يَفْقَهُوا۟That they may understandyafqahūقَوْلِىmy speechqawlī٢٨
That they may understand my speech.
20:29
وَٱجْعَلAnd appointwa-ij'ʿalلِّىfor melīوَزِيرًۭاa ministerwazīranمِّنْfromminأَهْلِىmy familyahlī٢٩
And appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -
20:30
هَـٰرُونَHarunhārūnaأَخِىmy brotherakhī٣٠
Aaron, my brother.
20:31
ٱشْدُدْReinforceush'dudبِهِۦٓthrough himbihiأَزْرِىmy strengthazrī٣١
Increase through him my strength
20:32
وَأَشْرِكْهُAnd make him sharewa-ashrik'huفِىٓ[in]fīأَمْرِىmy taskamrī٣٢
And let him share my task
20:33
كَىْThatkayنُسَبِّحَكَwe may glorify Younusabbiḥakaكَثِيرًۭاmuchkathīran٣٣
That we may exalt You much
20:34
وَنَذْكُرَكَAnd [we] remember Youwanadhkurakaكَثِيرًاmuchkathīran٣٤
And remember You much.
20:35
إِنَّكَIndeed, [You]innakaكُنتَYou arekuntaبِنَاof usbināبَصِيرًۭاAll-Seerbaṣīran٣٥
Indeed, You are of us ever Seeing."
20:36
قَالَHe saidqālaقَدْVerilyqadأُوتِيتَyou are grantedūtītaسُؤْلَكَyour requestsu'lakaيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā٣٦
[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
20:37
وَلَقَدْAnd indeedwalaqadمَنَنَّاWe conferred a favormanannāعَلَيْكَon youʿalaykaمَرَّةًanother timemarratanأُخْرَىٰٓanother timeukh'rā٣٧
And We had already conferred favor upon you another time,
20:38
إِذْWhenidhأَوْحَيْنَآWe inspiredawḥaynāإِلَىٰٓtoilāأُمِّكَyour motherummikaمَاwhatmāيُوحَىٰٓis inspiredyūḥā٣٨
When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
20:39
أَنِThataniٱقْذِفِيهِcast himiq'dhifīhiفِىinfīٱلتَّابُوتِthe chestl-tābūtiفَٱقْذِفِيهِthen cast itfa-iq'dhifīhiفِىinfīٱلْيَمِّthe riverl-yamiفَلْيُلْقِهِthen let cast itfalyul'qihiٱلْيَمُّthe riverl-yamuبِٱلسَّاحِلِon the bankbil-sāḥiliيَأْخُذْهُwill take himyakhudh'huعَدُوٌّۭan enemyʿaduwwunلِّىto Melīوَعَدُوٌّۭand an enemywaʿaduwwunلَّهُۥ ۚto himlahuوَأَلْقَيْتُAnd I castwa-alqaytuعَلَيْكَover youʿalaykaمَحَبَّةًۭlovemaḥabbatanمِّنِّىfrom Meminnīوَلِتُصْنَعَand that you may be brought upwalituṣ'naʿaعَلَىٰunderʿalāعَيْنِىٓMy eyeʿaynī٣٩
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].
20:40
إِذْWhenidhتَمْشِىٓwas goingtamshīأُخْتُكَyour sisterukh'tukaفَتَقُولُand she saidfataqūluهَلْShallhalأَدُلُّكُمْI show youadullukumعَلَىٰ[to]ʿalāمَن(one) whomanيَكْفُلُهُۥ ۖwill nurse and rear himyakfuluhuفَرَجَعْنَـٰكَSo We returned youfarajaʿnākaإِلَىٰٓtoilāأُمِّكَyour motherummikaكَىْthatkayتَقَرَّmay be cooledtaqarraعَيْنُهَاher eyesʿaynuhāوَلَاand notwalāتَحْزَنَ ۚshe grievestaḥzanaوَقَتَلْتَAnd you killedwaqataltaنَفْسًۭاa mannafsanفَنَجَّيْنَـٰكَbut We saved youfanajjaynākaمِنَfromminaٱلْغَمِّthe distressl-ghamiوَفَتَنَّـٰكَand We tried youwafatannākaفُتُونًۭا ۚ(with) a trialfutūnanفَلَبِثْتَThen you remainedfalabith'taسِنِينَ(some) yearssinīnaفِىٓwithfīأَهْلِ(the) peopleahliمَدْيَنَ(of) MadyanmadyanaثُمَّThenthummaجِئْتَyou cameji'taعَلَىٰatʿalāقَدَرٍۢthe decreed (time)qadarinيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā٤٠
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
20:41
وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَAnd I (have) chosen youwa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtukaلِنَفْسِىfor Myselflinafsī٤١
And I produced you for Myself.
20:42
ٱذْهَبْGoidh'habأَنتَyouantaوَأَخُوكَand your brotherwa-akhūkaبِـَٔايَـٰتِىwith My Signsbiāyātīوَلَاand (do) notwalāتَنِيَاslackentaniyāفِىinfīذِكْرِىMy remembrancedhik'rī٤٢
Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
20:43
ٱذْهَبَآGo, both of youidh'habāإِلَىٰtoilāفِرْعَوْنَFiraunfir'ʿawnaإِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahuطَغَىٰ(has) transgressedṭaghā٤٣
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
20:44
فَقُولَاAnd speakfaqūlāلَهُۥto himlahuقَوْلًۭاa wordqawlanلَّيِّنًۭاgentlelayyinanلَّعَلَّهُۥperhaps helaʿallahuيَتَذَكَّرُmay take heedyatadhakkaruأَوْorawيَخْشَىٰfearyakhshā٤٤
And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."
20:45
قَالَاThey saidqālāرَبَّنَآOur LordrabbanāإِنَّنَاIndeed, weinnanāنَخَافُfearnakhāfuأَنthatanيَفْرُطَhe will hastenyafruṭaعَلَيْنَآagainst usʿalaynāأَوْorawأَنthatanيَطْغَىٰhe will transgressyaṭghā٤٥
They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress."
20:46
قَالَHe saidqālaلَا(Do) notlāتَخَافَآ ۖfeartakhāfāإِنَّنِىIndeed, I Aminnanīمَعَكُمَآwith you bothmaʿakumāأَسْمَعُI hearasmaʿuوَأَرَىٰand I seewa-arā٤٦
[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.
20:47
فَأْتِيَاهُSo go to himfatiyāhuفَقُولَآand sayfaqūlāإِنَّاIndeed, weinnāرَسُولَاboth (are) Messengersrasūlāرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbikaفَأَرْسِلْso sendfa-arsilمَعَنَاwith usmaʿanāبَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israelbanīإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israelis'rāīlaوَلَاand (do) notwalāتُعَذِّبْهُمْ ۖtorment themtuʿadhib'humقَدْVerilyqadجِئْنَـٰكَwe came to youji'nākaبِـَٔايَةٍۢwith a Signbiāyatinمِّنfromminرَّبِّكَ ۖyour LordrabbikaوَٱلسَّلَـٰمُAnd peacewal-salāmuعَلَىٰonʿalāمَنِ(one) whomaniٱتَّبَعَfollowsittabaʿaٱلْهُدَىٰٓthe Guidancel-hudā٤٧
So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace will be upon he who follows the guidance.
20:48
إِنَّاIndeed, weinnāقَدْverilyqadأُوحِىَit has been revealedūḥiyaإِلَيْنَآto usilaynāأَنَّthatannaٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentl-ʿadhābaعَلَىٰ(will be) onʿalāمَن(one) whomanكَذَّبَdenieskadhabaوَتَوَلَّىٰand turns awaywatawallā٤٨
Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
20:49
قَالَHe saidqālaفَمَنThen whofamanرَّبُّكُمَا(is) your LordrabbukumāيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā٤٩
[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"
20:50
قَالَHe saidqālaرَبُّنَاOur Lordrabbunāٱلَّذِىٓ(is) the One Whoalladhīأَعْطَىٰgaveaʿṭāكُلَّ(to) everykullaشَىْءٍthingshayinخَلْقَهُۥits formkhalqahuثُمَّthenthummaهَدَىٰHe guided (it)hadā٥٠
He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
20:51
قَالَHe saidqālaفَمَاThen whatfamāبَالُ(is the) casebāluٱلْقُرُونِ(of) the generationsl-qurūniٱلْأُولَىٰ(of) the formerl-ūlā٥١
[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"
20:52
قَالَHe saidqālaعِلْمُهَاIts knowledgeʿil'muhāعِندَ(is) withʿindaرَبِّىmy Lordrabbīفِىinfīكِتَـٰبٍۢ ۖa RecordkitābinلَّاNotlāيَضِلُّerrsyaḍilluرَبِّىmy Lordrabbīوَلَاand notwalāيَنسَىforgetsyansā٥٢
[Moses] said, "The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
20:53
ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoalladhīجَعَلَmadejaʿalaلَكُمُfor youlakumuٱلْأَرْضَthe earthl-arḍaمَهْدًۭا(as) a bedmahdanوَسَلَكَand insertedwasalakaلَكُمْfor youlakumفِيهَاthereinfīhāسُبُلًۭاwayssubulanوَأَنزَلَand sent downwa-anzalaمِنَfromminaٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāiمَآءًۭwatermāanفَأَخْرَجْنَاthen We (have) brought forthfa-akhrajnāبِهِۦٓwith itbihiأَزْوَٰجًۭاpairsazwājanمِّنofminنَّبَاتٍۢplantsnabātinشَتَّىٰdiverseshattā٥٣
[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
20:54
كُلُوا۟Eatkulūوَٱرْعَوْا۟and pasturewa-ir'ʿawأَنْعَـٰمَكُمْ ۗyour cattleanʿāmakumإِنَّIndeedinnaفِىinfīذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signslaāyātinلِّأُو۟لِىfor possessorsli-ulīٱلنُّهَىٰ(of) intelligencel-nuhā٥٤
Eat [therefrom] and pasture your livestock. Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:55
۞ مِنْهَاFrom itmin'hāخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْWe created youkhalaqnākumوَفِيهَاand in itwafīhāنُعِيدُكُمْWe will return younuʿīdukumوَمِنْهَاand from itwamin'hāنُخْرِجُكُمْWe will bring you outnukh'rijukumتَارَةًtimetāratanأُخْرَىٰanotherukh'rā٥٥
From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
20:56
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَرَيْنَـٰهُWe showed himaraynāhuءَايَـٰتِنَاOur Signsāyātināكُلَّهَاall of themkullahāفَكَذَّبَbut he deniedfakadhabaوَأَبَىٰand refusedwa-abā٥٦
And We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
20:57
قَالَHe saidqālaأَجِئْتَنَاHave you come to usaji'tanāلِتُخْرِجَنَاto drive us outlitukh'rijanāمِنْofminأَرْضِنَاour landarḍināبِسِحْرِكَwith your magicbisiḥ'rikaيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā٥٧
He said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
20:58
فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّكَThen we will surely produce for youfalanatiyannakaبِسِحْرٍۢmagicbisiḥ'rinمِّثْلِهِۦlike itmith'lihiفَٱجْعَلْSo makefa-ij'ʿalبَيْنَنَاbetween usbaynanāوَبَيْنَكَand between youwabaynakaمَوْعِدًۭاan appointmentmawʿidanلَّاnotlāنُخْلِفُهُۥwe will fail itnukh'lifuhuنَحْنُ[we]naḥnuوَلَآand notwalāأَنتَyouantaمَكَانًۭا(in) a placemakānanسُوًۭىevensuwan٥٨
Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."1
20:59
قَالَHe saidqālaمَوْعِدُكُمْYour appointmentmawʿidukumيَوْمُ(is on the) dayyawmuٱلزِّينَةِ(of) the festivall-zīnatiوَأَنand thatwa-anيُحْشَرَwill be assembledyuḥ'sharaٱلنَّاسُthe peoplel-nāsuضُحًۭى(at) forenoonḍuḥan٥٩
[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."1
20:60
فَتَوَلَّىٰThen went awayfatawallāفِرْعَوْنُFiraunfir'ʿawnuفَجَمَعَand put togetherfajamaʿaكَيْدَهُۥhis plankaydahuثُمَّthenthummaأَتَىٰcameatā٦٠
So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].
20:61
قَالَSaidqālaلَهُمto themlahumمُّوسَىٰMusamūsāوَيْلَكُمْWoe to youwaylakumلَا(Do) notlāتَفْتَرُوا۟inventtaftarūعَلَىagainstʿalāٱللَّهِAllahl-lahiكَذِبًۭاa liekadhibanفَيُسْحِتَكُمlest He will destroy youfayus'ḥitakumبِعَذَابٍۢ ۖwith a punishmentbiʿadhābinوَقَدْAnd verilywaqadخَابَhe failedkhābaمَنِwhomaniٱفْتَرَىٰinventedif'tarā٦١
Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."
20:62
فَتَنَـٰزَعُوٓا۟Then they disputedfatanāzaʿūأَمْرَهُم(in) their affairamrahumبَيْنَهُمْamong thembaynahumوَأَسَرُّوا۟and they kept secretwa-asarrūٱلنَّجْوَىٰthe private conversationl-najwā٦٢
So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.
20:63
قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālūإِنْIndeedinهَـٰذَٰنِthese twohādhāniلَسَـٰحِرَٰنِ[two] magicianslasāḥirāniيُرِيدَانِthey intendyurīdāniأَنthatanيُخْرِجَاكُمthey drive you outyukh'rijākumمِّنْofminأَرْضِكُمyour landarḍikumبِسِحْرِهِمَاwith their magicbisiḥ'rihimāوَيَذْهَبَاand do awaywayadhhabāبِطَرِيقَتِكُمُwith your waybiṭarīqatikumuٱلْمُثْلَىٰthe exemplaryl-muth'lā٦٣
They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
20:64
فَأَجْمِعُوا۟So put togetherfa-ajmiʿūكَيْدَكُمْyour plankaydakumثُمَّthenthummaٱئْتُوا۟comei'tūصَفًّۭا ۚ(in) a lineṣaffanوَقَدْAnd verilywaqadأَفْلَحَ(will be) successfulaflaḥaٱلْيَوْمَtodayl-yawmaمَنِwhomaniٱسْتَعْلَىٰovercomesis'taʿlā٦٤
So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
20:65
قَالُوا۟They saidqālūيَـٰمُوسَىٰٓO MusayāmūsāإِمَّآEitherimmāأَن[that]anتُلْقِىَyou throwtul'qiyaوَإِمَّآorwa-immāأَن[that]anنَّكُونَwe will benakūnaأَوَّلَthe firstawwalaمَنْwhomanأَلْقَىٰthrowsalqā٦٥
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
20:66
قَالَHe saidqālaبَلْNaybalأَلْقُوا۟ ۖyou throwalqūفَإِذَاThen beholdfa-idhāحِبَالُهُمْTheir ropesḥibāluhumوَعِصِيُّهُمْand their staffswaʿiṣiyyuhumيُخَيَّلُseemedyukhayyaluإِلَيْهِto himilayhiمِنbyminسِحْرِهِمْtheir magicsiḥ'rihimأَنَّهَاthat theyannahāتَسْعَىٰ(were) movingtasʿā٦٦
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
20:67
فَأَوْجَسَSo sensedfa-awjasaفِىinfīنَفْسِهِۦhimselfnafsihiخِيفَةًۭa fearkhīfatanمُّوسَىٰMusamūsā٦٧
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
20:68
قُلْنَاWe saidqul'nāلَا(Do) notlāتَخَفْfeartakhafإِنَّكَIndeed, youinnakaأَنتَyouantaٱلْأَعْلَىٰ(will be) superiorl-aʿlā٦٨
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
20:69
وَأَلْقِAnd throwwa-alqiمَاwhatmāفِى(is) infīيَمِينِكَyour right handyamīnikaتَلْقَفْit will swallow uptalqafمَاwhatmāصَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖthey have madeṣanaʿūإِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāصَنَعُوا۟they (have) madeṣanaʿūكَيْدُa trickkayduسَـٰحِرٍۢ ۖ(of) a magiciansāḥirinوَلَاand notwalāيُفْلِحُwill be successfulyuf'liḥuٱلسَّاحِرُthe magicianl-sāḥiruحَيْثُwhereverḥaythuأَتَىٰhe comesatā٦٩
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
20:70
فَأُلْقِىَSo were thrown downfa-ul'qiyaٱلسَّحَرَةُthe magiciansl-saḥaratuسُجَّدًۭاprostratingsujjadanقَالُوٓا۟They saidqālūءَامَنَّاWe believeāmannāبِرَبِّin (the) Lordbirabbiهَـٰرُونَ(of) Harunhārūnaوَمُوسَىٰand Musawamūsā٧٠
So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
20:71
قَالَHe saidqālaءَامَنتُمْYou believeāmantumلَهُۥ[to] himlahuقَبْلَbeforeqablaأَنْ[that]anءَاذَنَI gave permissionādhanaلَكُمْ ۖto youlakumإِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahuلَكَبِيرُكُمُ(is) your chieflakabīrukumuٱلَّذِىthe one whoalladhīعَلَّمَكُمُtaught youʿallamakumuٱلسِّحْرَ ۖthe magicl-siḥ'raفَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّSo surely I will cut offfala-uqaṭṭiʿannaأَيْدِيَكُمْyour handsaydiyakumوَأَرْجُلَكُمand your feetwa-arjulakumمِّنْofminخِلَـٰفٍۢopposite sideskhilāfinوَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْand surely I will crucify youwala-uṣallibannakumفِىonfīجُذُوعِ(the) trunksjudhūʿiٱلنَّخْلِ(of) date-palmsl-nakhliوَلَتَعْلَمُنَّand surely you will knowwalataʿlamunnaأَيُّنَآwhich of usayyunāأَشَدُّ(is) more severeashadduعَذَابًۭا(in) punishmentʿadhābanوَأَبْقَىٰand more lastingwa-abqā٧١
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
20:72
قَالُوا۟They saidqālūلَنNeverlanنُّؤْثِرَكَwe will prefer younu'thirakaعَلَىٰoverʿalāمَاwhatmāجَآءَنَاhas come to usjāanāمِنَofminaٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِthe clear proofsl-bayinātiوَٱلَّذِىand the One Whowa-alladhīفَطَرَنَا ۖcreated usfaṭaranāفَٱقْضِSo decreefa-iq'ḍiمَآwhatevermāأَنتَyouantaقَاضٍ ۖ(are) decreeingqāḍinإِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāتَقْضِىyou can decreetaqḍīهَـٰذِهِ(for) thishādhihiٱلْحَيَوٰةَlifel-ḥayataٱلدُّنْيَآ(of) the worldl-dun'yā٧٢
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us. So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
20:73
إِنَّآIndeed, [we]innāءَامَنَّاwe believeāmannāبِرَبِّنَاin our Lordbirabbināلِيَغْفِرَthat He may forgiveliyaghfiraلَنَاfor uslanāخَطَـٰيَـٰنَاour sinskhaṭāyānāوَمَآand whatwamāأَكْرَهْتَنَاyou compelled usakrahtanāعَلَيْهِon itʿalayhiمِنَofminaٱلسِّحْرِ ۗthe magicl-siḥ'riوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahwal-lahuخَيْرٌۭ(is) Bestkhayrunوَأَبْقَىٰٓand Ever Lastingwa-abqā٧٣
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."1
20:74
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahuمَنwhomanيَأْتِcomesyatiرَبَّهُۥ(to) his Lordrabbahuمُجْرِمًۭا(as) a criminalmuj'rimanفَإِنَّthen indeedfa-innaلَهُۥfor himlahuجَهَنَّمَ(is) HelljahannamaلَاNotlāيَمُوتُhe will dieyamūtuفِيهَاin itfīhāوَلَاand notwalāيَحْيَىٰliveyaḥyā٧٤
Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
20:75
وَمَنBut whoeverwamanيَأْتِهِۦcomes to Himyatihiمُؤْمِنًۭا(as) a believermu'minanقَدْverilyqadعَمِلَhe has doneʿamilaٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِthe righteous deedsl-ṣāliḥātiفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāikaلَهُمُfor themlahumuٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ(will be) the ranksl-darajātuٱلْعُلَىٰ[the] highl-ʿulā٧٥
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
20:76
جَنَّـٰتُGardensjannātuعَدْنٍۢ(of) Edenʿadninتَجْرِىflowstajrīمِنfromminتَحْتِهَاunderneath themtaḥtihāٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُthe riversl-anhāruخَـٰلِدِينَabiding foreverkhālidīnaفِيهَا ۚin itfīhāوَذَٰلِكَAnd thatwadhālikaجَزَآءُ(is) the rewardjazāuمَن(for him) whomanتَزَكَّىٰpurifies himselftazakkā٧٦
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.
20:77
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadأَوْحَيْنَآWe inspiredawḥaynāإِلَىٰtoilāمُوسَىٰٓMusamūsāأَنْthatanأَسْرِTravel by nightasriبِعِبَادِىwith My slavesbiʿibādīفَٱضْرِبْand strikefa-iḍ'ribلَهُمْfor themlahumطَرِيقًۭاa pathṭarīqanفِىinfīٱلْبَحْرِthe seal-baḥriيَبَسًۭاdryyabasanلَّاnotlāتَخَـٰفُfearingtakhāfuدَرَكًۭاto be overtakendarakanوَلَاand notwalāتَخْشَىٰbeing afraidtakhshā٧٧
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
20:78
فَأَتْبَعَهُمْThen followed themfa-atbaʿahumفِرْعَوْنُFiraunfir'ʿawnuبِجُنُودِهِۦwith his forcesbijunūdihiفَغَشِيَهُمbut covered themfaghashiyahumمِّنَfromminaٱلْيَمِّthe seal-yamiمَاwhatmāغَشِيَهُمْcovered themghashiyahum٧٨
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,
20:79
وَأَضَلَّAnd led astraywa-aḍallaفِرْعَوْنُFiraunfir'ʿawnuقَوْمَهُۥhis peopleqawmahuوَمَاand (did) notwamāهَدَىٰguide themhadā٧٩
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
20:80
يَـٰبَنِىٓO Children of IsraelyābanīإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَO Children of Israelis'rāīlaقَدْVerilyqadأَنجَيْنَـٰكُمWe delivered youanjaynākumمِّنْfromminعَدُوِّكُمْyour enemyʿaduwwikumوَوَٰعَدْنَـٰكُمْand We made a covenant with youwawāʿadnākumجَانِبَon (the) sidejānibaٱلطُّورِ(of) the Mountl-ṭūriٱلْأَيْمَنَthe rightl-aymanaوَنَزَّلْنَاand We sent downwanazzalnāعَلَيْكُمُto youʿalaykumuٱلْمَنَّthe Mannal-manaوَٱلسَّلْوَىٰand the quailswal-salwā٨٠
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
20:81
كُلُوا۟Eatkulūمِنofminطَيِّبَـٰتِ(the) good thingsṭayyibātiمَاwhichmāرَزَقْنَـٰكُمْWe have provided yourazaqnākumوَلَاand (do) notwalāتَطْغَوْا۟transgresstaṭghawفِيهِthereinfīhiفَيَحِلَّlest should descendfayaḥillaعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumغَضَبِى ۖMy AngerghaḍabīوَمَنAnd whoeverwamanيَحْلِلْon whom descendsyaḥlilعَلَيْهِon whom descendsʿalayhiغَضَبِىMy Angerghaḍabīفَقَدْindeedfaqadهَوَىٰhe (has) perishedhawā٨١
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
20:82
وَإِنِّىBut indeed, I Amwa-innīلَغَفَّارٌۭthe Perpetual Forgiverlaghaffārunلِّمَنof whoeverlimanتَابَrepentstābaوَءَامَنَand believeswaāmanaوَعَمِلَand doeswaʿamilaصَـٰلِحًۭاrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥanثُمَّthenthummaٱهْتَدَىٰremains guidedih'tadā٨٢
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
20:83
۞ وَمَآAnd whatwamāأَعْجَلَكَmade you hastenaʿjalakaعَنfromʿanقَوْمِكَyour peopleqawmikaيَـٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā٨٣
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
20:84
قَالَHe saidqālaهُمْTheyhumأُو۟لَآءِ(are) closeulāiعَلَىٰٓuponʿalāأَثَرِىmy tracksatharīوَعَجِلْتُand I hastenedwaʿajil'tuإِلَيْكَto youilaykaرَبِّmy Lordrabbiلِتَرْضَىٰthat You be pleasedlitarḍā٨٤
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
20:85
قَالَHe saidqālaفَإِنَّاBut indeed, Wefa-innāقَدْ[verily]qadفَتَنَّاWe (have) triedfatannāقَوْمَكَyour peopleqawmakaمِنۢafter youminبَعْدِكَafter youbaʿdikaوَأَضَلَّهُمُand has led them astraywa-aḍallahumuٱلسَّامِرِىُّthe Samiril-sāmiriyu٨٥
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī1 has led them astray."
20:86
فَرَجَعَThen Musa returnedfarajaʿaمُوسَىٰٓThen Musa returnedmūsāإِلَىٰtoilāقَوْمِهِۦhis peopleqawmihiغَضْبَـٰنَangryghaḍbānaأَسِفًۭا ۚ(and) sorrowfulasifanقَالَHe saidqālaيَـٰقَوْمِO my peopleyāqawmiأَلَمْDid notalamيَعِدْكُمْpromise youyaʿid'kumرَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukumوَعْدًاa promisewaʿdanحَسَنًا ۚgoodḥasananأَفَطَالَThen, did seem longafaṭālaعَلَيْكُمُto youʿalaykumuٱلْعَهْدُthe promisel-ʿahduأَمْoramأَرَدتُّمْdid you desirearadttumأَنthatanيَحِلَّdescendyaḥillaعَلَيْكُمْupon youʿalaykumغَضَبٌۭ(the) Angerghaḍabunمِّنofminرَّبِّكُمْyour Lordrabbikumفَأَخْلَفْتُمso you brokefa-akhlaftumمَّوْعِدِى(the) promise to memawʿidī٨٦
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
20:87
قَالُوا۟They saidqālūمَآNotmāأَخْلَفْنَاwe brokeakhlafnāمَوْعِدَكَpromise to youmawʿidakaبِمَلْكِنَاby our willbimalkināوَلَـٰكِنَّاbut wewalākinnāحُمِّلْنَآ[we] were made to carryḥummil'nāأَوْزَارًۭاburdensawzāranمِّنfromminزِينَةِornamentszīnatiٱلْقَوْمِ(of) the peoplel-qawmiفَقَذَفْنَـٰهَاso we threw themfaqadhafnāhāفَكَذَٰلِكَand thusfakadhālikaأَلْقَىthrewalqāٱلسَّامِرِىُّthe Samiril-sāmiriyu٨٧
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
20:88
فَأَخْرَجَThen he brought forthfa-akhrajaلَهُمْfor themlahumعِجْلًۭاa calf'sʿij'lanجَسَدًۭاbodyjasadanلَّهُۥit hadlahuخُوَارٌۭa lowing soundkhuwārunفَقَالُوا۟and they saidfaqālūهَـٰذَآThishādhāإِلَـٰهُكُمْ(is) your godilāhukumوَإِلَـٰهُand the godwa-ilāhuمُوسَىٰ(of) Musamūsāفَنَسِىَbut he forgotfanasiya٨٨
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
20:89
أَفَلَاThen, did notafalāيَرَوْنَthey seeyarawnaأَلَّاthat notallāيَرْجِعُit (could) returnyarjiʿuإِلَيْهِمْto themilayhimقَوْلًۭاa wordqawlanوَلَاand notwalāيَمْلِكُpossessyamlikuلَهُمْfor themlahumضَرًّۭاany harmḍarranوَلَاand notwalāنَفْعًۭاany benefitnafʿan٨٩
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
20:90
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadقَالَ(had) saidqālaلَهُمْto themlahumهَـٰرُونُHarunhārūnuمِنbeforeminقَبْلُbeforeqabluيَـٰقَوْمِO my peopleyāqawmiإِنَّمَاOnlyinnamāفُتِنتُمyou are being testedfutintumبِهِۦ ۖby itbihiوَإِنَّand indeedwa-innaرَبَّكُمُyour Lordrabbakumuٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ(is) the Most Graciousl-raḥmānuفَٱتَّبِعُونِىso follow mefa-ittabiʿūnīوَأَطِيعُوٓا۟and obeywa-aṭīʿūأَمْرِىmy orderamrī٩٠
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
20:91
قَالُوا۟They saidqālūلَنNeverlanنَّبْرَحَwe will ceasenabraḥaعَلَيْهِbeing devoted to itʿalayhiعَـٰكِفِينَbeing devoted to itʿākifīnaحَتَّىٰuntilḥattāيَرْجِعَreturnsyarjiʿaإِلَيْنَاto usilaynāمُوسَىٰMusamūsā٩١
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
20:92
قَالَHe saidqālaيَـٰهَـٰرُونُO HarunyāhārūnuمَاWhatmāمَنَعَكَprevented youmanaʿakaإِذْwhenidhرَأَيْتَهُمْyou saw themra-aytahumضَلُّوٓا۟going astrayḍallū٩٢
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
20:93
أَلَّاThat notallāتَتَّبِعَنِ ۖyou follow metattabiʿaniأَفَعَصَيْتَThen, have you disobeyedafaʿaṣaytaأَمْرِىmy orderamrī٩٣
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
20:94
قَالَHe saidqālaيَبْنَؤُمَّO son of my motheryabna-ummaلَا(Do) notlāتَأْخُذْseize (me)takhudhبِلِحْيَتِىby my beardbiliḥ'yatīوَلَاand notwalāبِرَأْسِىٓ ۖby my headbirasīإِنِّىIndeed, Iinnīخَشِيتُ[I] fearedkhashītuأَنthatanتَقُولَyou would saytaqūlaفَرَّقْتَYou caused divisionfarraqtaبَيْنَbetweenbaynaبَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israelbanīإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israelis'rāīlaوَلَمْand notwalamتَرْقُبْyou respecttarqubقَوْلِىmy wordqawlī٩٤
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
20:95
قَالَHe saidqālaفَمَاThen whatfamāخَطْبُكَ(is) your casekhaṭbukaيَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّO Samiriyāsāmiriyyu٩٥
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
20:96
قَالَHe saidqālaبَصُرْتُI perceivedbaṣur'tuبِمَاwhatbimāلَمْnotlamيَبْصُرُوا۟they perceiveyabṣurūبِهِۦin itbihiفَقَبَضْتُso I tookfaqabaḍtuقَبْضَةًۭa handfulqabḍatanمِّنْfromminأَثَرِ(the) trackathariٱلرَّسُولِ(of) the Messengerl-rasūliفَنَبَذْتُهَاthen threw itfanabadhtuhāوَكَذَٰلِكَand thuswakadhālikaسَوَّلَتْsuggestedsawwalatلِىto melīنَفْسِىmy soulnafsī٩٦
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger and threw it, and thus did my soul entice me."
20:97
قَالَHe saidqālaفَٱذْهَبْThen gofa-idh'habفَإِنَّAnd indeedfa-innaلَكَfor youlakaفِىinfīٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifel-ḥayatiأَنthatanتَقُولَyou will saytaqūlaلَا(Do) notlāمِسَاسَ ۖtouchmisāsaوَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-innaلَكَfor youlakaمَوْعِدًۭا(is) an appointmentmawʿidanلَّنneverlanتُخْلَفَهُۥ ۖyou will fail to (keep) ittukh'lafahuوَٱنظُرْAnd lookwa-unẓurإِلَىٰٓatilāإِلَـٰهِكَyour godilāhikaٱلَّذِىthat whichalladhīظَلْتَyou have remainedẓaltaعَلَيْهِto itʿalayhiعَاكِفًۭا ۖdevotedʿākifanلَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥSurely we will burn itlanuḥarriqannahuثُمَّthenthummaلَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥcertainly we will scatter itlanansifannahuفِىinfīٱلْيَمِّthe seal-yamiنَسْفًا(in) particlesnasfan٩٧
[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'1 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.
20:98
إِنَّمَآOnlyinnamāإِلَـٰهُكُمُyour Godilāhukumuٱللَّهُ(is) Allahl-lahuٱلَّذِىthe Onealladhīلَآ(there is) nolāإِلَـٰهَgodilāhaإِلَّاbutillāهُوَ ۚHehuwaوَسِعَHe has encompassedwasiʿaكُلَّallkullaشَىْءٍthingsshayinعِلْمًۭا(in) knowledgeʿil'man٩٨
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
20:99
كَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālikaنَقُصُّWe relatenaquṣṣuعَلَيْكَto youʿalaykaمِنْfromminأَنۢبَآءِ(the) newsanbāiمَا(of) whatmāقَدْhas precededqadسَبَقَ ۚhas precededsabaqaوَقَدْAnd certainlywaqadءَاتَيْنَـٰكَWe have given youātaynākaمِنfromminلَّدُنَّاUsladunnāذِكْرًۭاa Reminderdhik'ran٩٩
Thus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
20:100
مَّنْWhoevermanأَعْرَضَturns awayaʿraḍaعَنْهُfrom itʿanhuفَإِنَّهُۥthen indeed, hefa-innahuيَحْمِلُwill bearyaḥmiluيَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawmaٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) Resurrectionl-qiyāmatiوِزْرًاa burdenwiz'ran١٠٠
Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
20:101
خَـٰلِدِينَAbiding foreverkhālidīnaفِيهِ ۖin itfīhiوَسَآءَand evilwasāaلَهُمْfor themlahumيَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawmaٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionl-qiyāmatiحِمْلًۭا(as) a loadḥim'lan١٠١
[Abiding] eternally therein, and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -
20:102
يَوْمَ(The) Dayyawmaيُنفَخُwill be blownyunfakhuفِىinfīٱلصُّورِ ۚthe Trumpetl-ṣūriوَنَحْشُرُand We will gatherwanaḥshuruٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsl-muj'rimīnaيَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Dayyawma-idhinزُرْقًۭاblue-eyedzur'qan١٠٢
The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.
20:103
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَThey are murmuringyatakhāfatūnaبَيْنَهُمْamong themselvesbaynahumإِنNotinلَّبِثْتُمْyou remainedlabith'tumإِلَّاexcept (for)illāعَشْرًۭاtenʿashran١٠٣
They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
20:104
نَّحْنُWenaḥnuأَعْلَمُknow bestaʿlamuبِمَاwhatbimāيَقُولُونَthey will sayyaqūlūnaإِذْwhenidhيَقُولُwill sayyaqūluأَمْثَلُهُمْ(the) best of themamthaluhumطَرِيقَةً(in) conductṭarīqatanإِنNotinلَّبِثْتُمْyou remainedlabith'tumإِلَّاexcept (for)illāيَوْمًۭاa dayyawman١٠٤
We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."
20:105
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَAnd they ask youwayasalūnakaعَنِaboutʿaniٱلْجِبَالِthe mountainsl-jibāliفَقُلْso sayfaqulيَنسِفُهَاWill blast themyansifuhāرَبِّىmy Lordrabbīنَسْفًۭا(into) particlesnasfan١٠٥
And they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast.
20:106
فَيَذَرُهَاThen He will leave itfayadharuhāقَاعًۭاa levelqāʿanصَفْصَفًۭاplainṣafṣafan١٠٦
And He will leave it [i.e., the earth] a level plain;
20:107
لَّاNotlāتَرَىٰyou will seetarāفِيهَاin itfīhāعِوَجًۭاany crookednessʿiwajanوَلَآand notwalāأَمْتًۭاany curveamtan١٠٧
You will not see therein a depression or an elevation."
20:108
يَوْمَئِذٍۢOn that Dayyawma-idhinيَتَّبِعُونَthey will followyattabiʿūnaٱلدَّاعِىَthe callerl-dāʿiyaلَاnolāعِوَجَdeviationʿiwajaلَهُۥ ۖfrom itlahuوَخَشَعَتِAnd (will be) humbledwakhashaʿatiٱلْأَصْوَاتُthe voicesl-aṣwātuلِلرَّحْمَـٰنِfor the Most Graciouslilrraḥmāniفَلَاso notfalāتَسْمَعُyou will heartasmaʿuإِلَّاexceptillāهَمْسًۭاa faint soundhamsan١٠٨
That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
20:109
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ(On) that Dayyawma-idhinلَّاnotlāتَنفَعُwill benefittanfaʿuٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُthe intercessionl-shafāʿatuإِلَّاexceptillāمَنْ(to) whommanأَذِنَhas given permissionadhinaلَهُ[to him]lahuٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānuوَرَضِىَand He has acceptedwaraḍiyaلَهُۥfor himlahuقَوْلًۭاa wordqawlan١٠٩
That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
20:110
يَعْلَمُHe knowsyaʿlamuمَاwhatmāبَيْنَ(is) before thembaynaأَيْدِيهِمْ(is) before themaydīhimوَمَاand whatwamāخَلْفَهُمْ(is) behind themkhalfahumوَلَاwhile notwalāيُحِيطُونَthey encompassyuḥīṭūnaبِهِۦitbihiعِلْمًۭا(in) knowledgeʿil'man١١٠
He [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
20:111
۞ وَعَنَتِAnd (will be) humbledwaʿanatiٱلْوُجُوهُthe facesl-wujūhuلِلْحَىِّbefore the Ever-Livinglil'ḥayyiٱلْقَيُّومِ ۖthe Self-Subsistingl-qayūmiوَقَدْAnd verilywaqadخَابَwill have failedkhābaمَنْ(he) whomanحَمَلَcarriedḥamalaظُلْمًۭاwrongdoingẓul'man١١١
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. And he will have failed who carries injustice.
20:112
وَمَنBut (he) whowamanيَعْمَلْdoesyaʿmalمِنَofminaٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِthe righteous deedsl-ṣāliḥātiوَهُوَwhile hewahuwaمُؤْمِنٌۭ(is) a believermu'minunفَلَاthen notfalāيَخَافُhe will fearyakhāfuظُلْمًۭاinjusticeẓul'manوَلَاand notwalāهَضْمًۭاdeprivationhaḍman١١٢
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
20:113
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thuswakadhālikaأَنزَلْنَـٰهُWe have sent it downanzalnāhuقُرْءَانًا(the) Quranqur'ānanعَرَبِيًّۭا(in) Arabicʿarabiyyanوَصَرَّفْنَاand We have explainedwaṣarrafnāفِيهِin itfīhiمِنَofminaٱلْوَعِيدِthe warningsl-waʿīdiلَعَلَّهُمْthat they maylaʿallahumيَتَّقُونَfearyattaqūnaأَوْorawيُحْدِثُit may causeyuḥ'dithuلَهُمْ[for] themlahumذِكْرًۭاremembrancedhik'ran١١٣
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
20:114
فَتَعَـٰلَىSo high (above all)fataʿālāٱللَّهُ(is) Allahl-lahuٱلْمَلِكُthe Kingl-malikuٱلْحَقُّ ۗthe Truel-ḥaquوَلَاAnd (do) notwalāتَعْجَلْhastentaʿjalبِٱلْقُرْءَانِwith the Quranbil-qur'āniمِنbeforeminقَبْلِbeforeqabliأَن[that]anيُقْضَىٰٓis completedyuq'ḍāإِلَيْكَto youilaykaوَحْيُهُۥ ۖits revelationwaḥyuhuوَقُلand saywaqulرَّبِّMy LordrabbiزِدْنِىIncrease mezid'nīعِلْمًۭا(in) knowledgeʿil'man١١٤
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
20:115
وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqadعَهِدْنَآWe made a covenantʿahid'nāإِلَىٰٓwithilāءَادَمَAdamādamaمِنbeforeminقَبْلُbeforeqabluفَنَسِىَbut he forgotfanasiyaوَلَمْand notwalamنَجِدْWe foundnajidلَهُۥin himlahuعَزْمًۭاdeterminationʿazman١١٥
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.
20:116
وَإِذْAnd whenwa-idhقُلْنَاWe saidqul'nāلِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِto the Angelslil'malāikatiٱسْجُدُوا۟Prostrateus'judūلِـَٔادَمَto Adamliādamaفَسَجَدُوٓا۟then they prostratedfasajadūإِلَّآexceptillāإِبْلِيسَIblisib'līsaأَبَىٰhe refusedabā١١٦
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees; he refused.
20:117
فَقُلْنَاThen We saidfaqul'nāيَـٰٓـَٔادَمُO AdamyāādamuإِنَّIndeedinnaهَـٰذَاthishādhāعَدُوٌّۭ(is) an enemyʿaduwwunلَّكَto youlakaوَلِزَوْجِكَand to your wifewalizawjikaفَلَاSo notfalāيُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا(let) him drive you bothyukh'rijannakumāمِنَfromminaٱلْجَنَّةِParadisel-janatiفَتَشْقَىٰٓso (that) you would sufferfatashqā١١٧
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
20:118
إِنَّIndeedinnaلَكَfor youlakaأَلَّاthat notallāتَجُوعَyou will be hungrytajūʿaفِيهَاthereinfīhāوَلَاand notwalāتَعْرَىٰyou will be unclothedtaʿrā١١٨
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
20:119
وَأَنَّكَAnd that youwa-annakaلَاnotlāتَظْمَؤُا۟will suffer from thirsttaẓma-uفِيهَاthereinfīhāوَلَاand notwalāتَضْحَىٰexposed to the sun's heattaḍḥā١١٩
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
20:120
فَوَسْوَسَThen whisperedfawaswasaإِلَيْهِto himilayhiٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُShaitaanl-shayṭānuقَالَhe saidqālaيَـٰٓـَٔادَمُO AdamyāādamuهَلْShallhalأَدُلُّكَI direct youadullukaعَلَىٰtoʿalāشَجَرَةِ(the) treeshajaratiٱلْخُلْدِ(of) the Eternityl-khul'diوَمُلْكٍۢand a kingdomwamul'kinلَّاnotlāيَبْلَىٰ(that will) deteriorateyablā١٢٠
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
20:121
فَأَكَلَاThen they both atefa-akalāمِنْهَاfrom itmin'hāفَبَدَتْso became apparentfabadatلَهُمَاto themlahumāسَوْءَٰتُهُمَاtheir shamesawātuhumāوَطَفِقَاand they beganwaṭafiqāيَخْصِفَانِ(to) fastenyakhṣifāniعَلَيْهِمَاon themselvesʿalayhimāمِنfromminوَرَقِ(the) leaveswaraqiٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ(of) Paradisel-janatiوَعَصَىٰٓAnd Adam disobeyedwaʿaṣāءَادَمُAnd Adam disobeyedādamuرَبَّهُۥhis Lordrabbahuفَغَوَىٰand erredfaghawā١٢١
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
20:122
ثُمَّThenthummaٱجْتَبَـٰهُchose himij'tabāhuرَبُّهُۥhis Lordrabbuhuفَتَابَand turnedfatābaعَلَيْهِto himʿalayhiوَهَدَىٰand guided (him)wahadā١٢٢
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
20:123
قَالَHe saidqālaٱهْبِطَاGo downih'biṭāمِنْهَاfrom itmin'hāجَمِيعًۢا ۖalljamīʿanبَعْضُكُمْsome of youbaʿḍukumلِبَعْضٍto otherslibaʿḍinعَدُوٌّۭ ۖ(as) enemyʿaduwwunفَإِمَّاThen iffa-immāيَأْتِيَنَّكُمcomes to youyatiyannakumمِّنِّىfrom Meminnīهُدًۭىguidancehudanفَمَنِthen whoeverfamaniٱتَّبَعَfollowsittabaʿaهُدَاىَMy guidancehudāyaفَلَاthen notfalāيَضِلُّhe will go astrayyaḍilluوَلَاand notwalāيَشْقَىٰsufferyashqā١٢٣
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
20:124
وَمَنْAnd whoeverwamanأَعْرَضَturns awayaʿraḍaعَنfromʿanذِكْرِىMy remembrancedhik'rīفَإِنَّthen indeedfa-innaلَهُۥfor himlahuمَعِيشَةًۭ(is) a lifemaʿīshatanضَنكًۭاstraitenedḍankanوَنَحْشُرُهُۥand We will gather himwanaḥshuruhuيَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawmaٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionl-qiyāmatiأَعْمَىٰblindaʿmā١٢٤
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
20:125
قَالَHe will sayqālaرَبِّMy LordrabbiلِمَWhylimaحَشَرْتَنِىٓYou raised meḥashartanīأَعْمَىٰblindaʿmāوَقَدْwhile [verily]waqadكُنتُI hadkuntuبَصِيرًۭاsightbaṣīran١٢٥
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
20:126
قَالَHe will sayqālaكَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālikaأَتَتْكَcame to youatatkaءَايَـٰتُنَاOur Signsāyātunāفَنَسِيتَهَا ۖbut you forgot themfanasītahāوَكَذَٰلِكَand thuswakadhālikaٱلْيَوْمَtodayl-yawmaتُنسَىٰyou will be forgottentunsā١٢٦
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
20:127
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thuswakadhālikaنَجْزِىWe recompensenajzīمَنْ(he) whomanأَسْرَفَtransgressesasrafaوَلَمْand notwalamيُؤْمِنۢbelievesyu'minبِـَٔايَـٰتِin (the) Signsbiāyātiرَبِّهِۦ ۚ(of) his LordrabbihiوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely (the) punishmentwalaʿadhābuٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhiratiأَشَدُّ(is) more severeashadduوَأَبْقَىٰٓand more lastingwa-abqā١٢٧
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
20:128
أَفَلَمْThen has notafalamيَهْدِit guidedyahdiلَهُمْ[for] themlahumكَمْhow manykamأَهْلَكْنَاWe (have) destroyedahlaknāقَبْلَهُمbefore themqablahumمِّنَofminaٱلْقُرُونِthe generationsl-qurūniيَمْشُونَ(as) they walkyamshūnaفِىinfīمَسَـٰكِنِهِمْ ۗtheir dwellingsmasākinihimإِنَّIndeedinnaفِىinfīذَٰلِكَthatdhālikaلَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signslaāyātinلِّأُو۟لِىfor possessorsli-ulīٱلنُّهَىٰ(of) intelligencel-nuhā١٢٨
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
20:129
وَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlāكَلِمَةٌۭ(for) a Wordkalimatunسَبَقَتْ(that) precededsabaqatمِنfromminرَّبِّكَyour Lordrabbikaلَكَانَsurely (would) have beenlakānaلِزَامًۭاan obligationlizāmanوَأَجَلٌۭand a termwa-ajalunمُّسَمًّۭىdeterminedmusamman١٢٩
And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately], and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
20:130
فَٱصْبِرْSo be patientfa-iṣ'birعَلَىٰoverʿalāمَاwhatmāيَقُولُونَthey sayyaqūlūnaوَسَبِّحْand glorifywasabbiḥبِحَمْدِwith praisebiḥamdiرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbikaقَبْلَbeforeqablaطُلُوعِ(the) risingṭulūʿiٱلشَّمْسِ(of) the sunl-shamsiوَقَبْلَand beforewaqablaغُرُوبِهَا ۖits settingghurūbihāوَمِنْand fromwaminءَانَآئِ(the) hoursānāiٱلَّيْلِ(of) the nightal-layliفَسَبِّحْand glorifyfasabbiḥوَأَطْرَافَ(at the) endswa-aṭrāfaٱلنَّهَارِ(of) the dayl-nahāriلَعَلَّكَso that you maylaʿallakaتَرْضَىٰbe satisfiedtarḍā١٣٠
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
20:131
وَلَاAnd (do) notwalāتَمُدَّنَّextendtamuddannaعَيْنَيْكَyour eyesʿaynaykaإِلَىٰtowardsilāمَاwhatmāمَتَّعْنَاWe have given for enjoymentmattaʿnāبِهِۦٓ[with it]bihiأَزْوَٰجًۭاpairsazwājanمِّنْهُمْof themmin'humزَهْرَةَ(the) splendorzahrataٱلْحَيَوٰةِ(of) the lifel-ḥayatiٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yāلِنَفْتِنَهُمْthat We may test themlinaftinahumفِيهِ ۚin itfīhiوَرِزْقُAnd (the) provisionwariz'quرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbikaخَيْرٌۭ(is) betterkhayrunوَأَبْقَىٰand more lastingwa-abqā١٣١
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
20:132
وَأْمُرْAnd enjoinwamurأَهْلَكَ(on) your familyahlakaبِٱلصَّلَوٰةِthe prayerbil-ṣalatiوَٱصْطَبِرْand be steadfastwa-iṣ'ṭabirعَلَيْهَا ۖthereinʿalayhāلَاNotlāنَسْـَٔلُكَWe ask younasalukaرِزْقًۭا ۖ(for) provisionriz'qanنَّحْنُWenaḥnuنَرْزُقُكَ ۗprovide (for) younarzuqukaوَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُand the outcomewal-ʿāqibatuلِلتَّقْوَىٰ(is) for the righteous[ness]lilttaqwā١٣٢
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
20:133
وَقَالُوا۟And they saywaqālūلَوْلَاWhy notlawlāيَأْتِينَاhe brings usyatīnāبِـَٔايَةٍۢa signbiāyatinمِّنfromminرَّبِّهِۦٓ ۚhis LordrabbihiأَوَلَمْHas notawalamتَأْتِهِمcome to themtatihimبَيِّنَةُevidencebayyinatuمَا(of) whatmāفِى(was) infīٱلصُّحُفِthe Scripturesl-ṣuḥufiٱلْأُولَىٰthe formerl-ūlā١٣٣
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?
20:134
وَلَوْAnd ifwalawأَنَّآWeannāأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُم(had) destroyed themahlaknāhumبِعَذَابٍۢwith a punishmentbiʿadhābinمِّنbefore himminقَبْلِهِۦbefore himqablihiلَقَالُوا۟surely they (would) have saidlaqālūرَبَّنَاOur Lordrabbanāلَوْلَآwhy notlawlāأَرْسَلْتَYou sentarsaltaإِلَيْنَاto usilaynāرَسُولًۭاa Messengerrasūlanفَنَتَّبِعَso we (could) have followedfanattabiʿaءَايَـٰتِكَYour signsāyātikaمِنbeforeminقَبْلِbeforeqabliأَن[that]anنَّذِلَّwe were humiliatednadhillaوَنَخْزَىٰand disgracedwanakhzā١٣٤
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
20:135
قُلْSayqulكُلٌّۭEachkullunمُّتَرَبِّصٌۭ(is) waitingmutarabbiṣunفَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ ۖso awaitfatarabbaṣūفَسَتَعْلَمُونَThen you will knowfasataʿlamūnaمَنْwhomanأَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companionsaṣḥābuٱلصِّرَٰطِ(of) the wayl-ṣirāṭiٱلسَّوِىِّ[the] evenl-sawiyiوَمَنِand whowamaniٱهْتَدَىٰis guidedih'tadā١٣٥
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting; so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
